Beautiful TechnologyAisthesis is the Ancient Greek word for “sensation”. It is where the term aesthetics comes from, as originally the word was used to define the science of sensory perception.
Located between aesthetics and art, beauty acts as their interpreter and ambassador in our daily lives. Beauty attracts. Beauty stimulates. Beauty conquers. So, let’s follow its lead, as beauty makes us better.

editorial
Competitiveness is the word that occurs most frequently in this issue of Ceramic World Review. The 515 million euros of investments made by the Italian ce-ramic tile industry last year were all aimed at improving com-petitiveness. The same goal was pursued by adopting new In-dustry 4.0 digital technologies and developing new large and very large size surfaces capable of opening up new market seg-ments. Competitiveness was likewise the goal achieved by the Italian sanitaryware manufacturers in the Civita Castellana clus-ter when they decided to focus on design and bespoke quality and reinvent their business models, moving away from a strate-gy based on price competition (which would certainly have seen them emerge as losers) towards one that would enable them to compete on equal terms with competitors in the high and very high end segments. The same strategy has been adopted in Spain by Living Ceram-ics, which has set its sights high ever since it was founded 5 years ago. The results are plain to see: by focusing on small batches of high-quality products, unflagging aesthetic research and an im-peccable service, the company is able to charge prices that are three times higher than the Spanish ceramic industry’s average. And with the latest investments in large slab production technol-ogy it aims to further improve its competitiveness.
Competitiveness is also the factor that emerges from a close reading of the 26th national statistical survey of the Italian ce-ramic plant and machinery manufacturers published by Acimac at the end of June. Above and beyond the third consecutive turnover record and the exceptional 20% growth in domestic sales (an extra 100 million euros), two aspects stand out in par-ticular. The first is the identical growth in turnover and employ-ment (+10%), fuelled by a strong demand for highly qualified professionals such as technicians and engineers as Italian com-panies strive to continually raise the bar and maintain their inter-national market leadership as process innovators. The second aspect is the fact that in 2017 exports of Italian tech-nology marked up the fourth consecutive all-time sales record since 2014 with a total of 1.65 billion euros, 7% up on 2016. This was attributable not only to the Italian industry’s dynamism in all world markets (+26% in Europe, +20% in China, +15% in Southeast Asia, +14% in Africa, +6% in South America) but above all its ability to maintain a competitive edge – despite the higher cost of its technologies – in areas where Asian rivals are already established. 5
I risultati le stan-no dando ragione.
