PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hi everyone,
What a wonderful start to the year at the last meeting with the introduction of 4 new members Margaret Harri-son and Denise Matthews, and Laura and John Thomas.
We welcome you all, to enjoy the fun and fellowship provided by the Club and its members.
The fun continued with a very interesting talk from Tony Petkovic who provided such an amusing background on his life, that he has been requested to do a Part 2 for our next meeting, then we learned some new road rules to try after the meeting, from our very focussed NRMA speaker. I understand that everyone made it home safely.
A number of special events have followed during this month with the some members lucky to attend the Seniors Gala Concert which was very good entertainment and of course millions(?) of seniors around Cockle Bay and the new Entertainment precinct. A well organised Stephen Thomas DDT event took members to the Arctic show at the Maritime Museum, lunch, Bald Archies and wine bar to soothe the day out.
What else –members returned from the successful Japan trip (photos on the web site), and we have enjoyed Stitch and Chat, Meditation, Tennis, Cheese and Wine and Walking.
The month ahead offers us the chance to have more fun and revelry thanks to our motivated Group Leaders and Interest group leaders, so lets look forward to the events ahead.
Desley Burgdorf and Kris Pannah are both off overseas for a few weeks, but we should thank them for their work on meeting minutes and gaining newsletter sponsorship respectively. Thanks to Lesley Dudgeon for assist-ing whilst Desley is away and of course Derek Allison who is managing the money.
Lastly, we should all remember those who have represented us in conflicts throughout the world –
lest we forget.

LAST MONTHS INTERNAL SPEAKER
Last months Internal Speaker was Tony Petkovich. Tony was born on Korcula, which lies off the coast of Croatia, midway between Split and Dubrovnik. He told of a very happy childhood, helping out on the fam-ily farm. Tony recalled going to the movies and seeing a promotion for Australia—blue skies, sports cars and girls in swimwear getting spray tans -- Tony was hooked, he wanted that spray tanning job!
We even learned about Tony’s first and only lesson on sex from his father. He was mystified by some of the advice given by his Dad but as he said Ï learned fast”.
We cant wait for the next hilarious instalment which is coming up at our next meeting.

GUEST SPEAKER—MAY MEETING
Our May speaker is Cleo Lynch.
Cleo Lynch married in her early twenties and raised a large family (six children). To further her education, she completed a
Bachelor of Arts in English literature at Macquarie University as a mature-aged student.
The disintegration of a marriage and a plummeting of her financial and social status when in her late forties, left Cleo
stranded with a limited income, custody of her two youngest children, a mortgage and no provision for her old age.
At this time of upheaval in her life, she applied for employment with the NSW Department of Corrective Services where
she worked as a correctional officer, probation and parole officer and a trainer at the academy. In 1996, she became the
inaugural manager of the first community-based, pre-release halfway house in NSW for female offenders and their chil-
dren.
Ian Bowden
GUEST MONTH LAST MONTH Ian Bowden introduced our April speaker Glenn Christie from the NRMA. Glenn’s topic was “Driving my Life-style”. Glenn’s presentation was very informative and covered many areas affecting us all when using the roads. He touched on rules regarding use of mobile phones, roundabout rules, cyclist rules, school zone rules; many rules for everything, not to forget drink driving rules. He explained the requirement for a medical at age 75 to assess your fitness to drive and at 85—a medical and Driver Assessment Test. As well as driving, Glenn touched on Pedestrian Safety, and the need to be vigilant when out walking. We thank Glenn for his time and for his interesting presentation. Ian Bowden Speakers Convenor.

Cheese and Wine Lunch Cheese and Wine Lunch, Bowral—19th April What a great day was had by 44 of our members at the lovely home of Lesley and Norrie Dudgeon in Bowral.
The weather was great, no snow this time, even the incident on the freeway didn’t deter anyone from attending. Everyone enjoyed each others company throughout the day. The lunch consisting of sausages, salads and the desserts was very enjoyable.
Thank you Lesley and Norrie for your hospitality. Bob Wurth.
The next Cheese & Wine Night will be at Dani Woods’ home. Details at next meeting.
Volunteers to host Cheese and Wine Nights for rest of the year are required. Please contact Lyn Hayhow if you are able to help.

JAPAN TOUR
On Sunday 25th March eight of us set out on our trip to Japan.
Kerry & Joy Fink, John & Joan Van den Burg, Dennis & Lyn Hall and Allen & Gloria McInnes
When we arrived in Tokyo we had a free night and decided that we would search for a restaurant, we finally agreed on Japanese.
They escorted us to a room and guess what we had to take our shoes off and there was a hole in the floor where the table was and we had to sit on the floor, that was a little difficult for me but we all managed and had lots of laughs, the food was different, fried chicken hearts and gizzards very delicious, we never ordered that again.
We saw lots and lots of beautiful cherry blossom’s every where we went. It was warm and because of the weath-er the cherry blossom’s had come out earlier so we were very fortunate we arrived at the right time. By the time we got to Osaka a lot of the blossoms had fallen and were like a carpet on the ground and it was snowing petals when the wind blew.
At the beginning we had a lot of Japanese food in restaurants. Meaning you had to take your shoes off and sit on the floor, very challenging and then eat raw fish but they had lots of different sauces that you could dip it in. Af-ter a week we were dying for some steak, so on our nights that we had free we went in search of a Steak House, guess what, they were always booked out but plenty of spare room in the Japanese Restaurants.
We saw some beautiful gardens, hot springs and some went in the hot springs, none of us 4 ladies experienced it as you had to go naked, of course some of the men went. Different pools for men & women of course.
We saw Mt Fuji and there was a lot of snow on the top so lots of photos were taken.
We went to a deer park and many, many castles and most of them had lots of steps.
We also went to visit many Temples. We even went to the Old Sake Breweries Museum.
When we arrived at Ryu Resort & Spa, Takayama we were very excited because all around it was lots and lots of snow. When you looked out the windows there was snow everywhere but it wasn’t cold. When we went to din-ner that night we had to dress in the traditional Kimono and the men had their robes to wear also, with socks with the one toe in it and we had to wear the scuffs, we all had a little difficulty walking but we managed.
We went from Kyoto to Hiroshima on the JR Bullet Train which only took 2 hours, travelling over 300km per hour. While there we visited the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome and the museum, it was very mov-ing indeed.
I must say we had a wonderful holiday, our tour guide loved his culture and taught us quite a bit. It was great experience and would recommend everyone visit Japan, but I am sure you wouldn’t be as lucky as us, as we just had the best group, everyone looked after each other and we made the best of every moment with lots of won-derful memories.
Thanks to Joan & John, Joy & Kerry, & Lynn & Dennis for being the best of travelling companions.
Special thanks to Joy & Kerry for organising a wonderful tour.
