PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello Members,
Here we are again, almost at the end of another month of 2017! I believe that we have all enjoyed another good year so far with lots of outings and events to entertain us, not to mention the opportunity to catch up in a slightly more formal manner on the first Friday of each and every month.
This comment is actually a segue to my next subject and I feel we should all take a moment to sit down and consider.
The Beaumont Hills Probus Club has been providing enjoyment to around 100-130 members since 2012. This has been possible because we have always had members who were willing and able to take positions in a lead-ership capacity. Of more recent times, we have been re-cycling members from one position to another and are met with “Oh No! I couldn’t do that” when we ask for new volunteers.
You do not need to be a “captain of industry” or listed in “Who’s Who” to take on a role within our Club – take me, your President, for example:
Seriously though! With the end of the year fast approaching and our change-over of officers in March – and the Christmas/New Year break in between – we need to start thinking of whether we are prepared and able to offer ourselves for a leadership role in 2018.
If we all came along, enjoyed the companionship and camaraderie of gatherings without a thought to just what we could offer ourselves, we would not have a functioning club. Nothing would happen without some organisa-tion and enthusiasm!
Please seriously give consideration: perhaps you and a friend in the Club could offer yourselves “jointly” in a leadership role. Kerrie Sims and Lee Thomas currently lead the Theatre Group in partnership and when either is travelling the other steps in.
Hope anyone on the sick list is making progress and we look forward to your return.
Lesley Dudgeon.

There were 33 people that attended the event and as usual we all had a great time, some ventured across to Tea Gardens on the ferry and enjoyed lunch at the local hotel, pity the weather was not the best on the day. There was a comment made to me about our group at the camp kitchen on the vari-ous evenings, that we seemed to really enjoy one another’s friendship and enjoyed a good laugh.
The sausage sizzle went well and everyone seemed to enjoy the time that evening.
We finished the event with a Thai banquet meal at a local restaurant on the Wednesday evening.
Kerry also suggested we go round to a spot to feed the bream fish that are in the ocean. There were some that were ATTACKED by the frenzy of the wild fish whilst feeding them bread, ha, ha, ha.
I would like to thank everyone that came for making it a fun and happy time, it gives me pleasure to do this every time I do these outings.

Recap Wellbeing / Meditation Group
Hi Everyone
With a lot of regulars away in wonderful places such as
Italy etc, we were small in number but that didn't stop
us. Found a new meditation that was very relaxing and
allowed the silence and stillness to prevail ….and was
very helpful in silencing the useless, worrying mental
chatter that can take up a lot of our time and awareness.
Thankyou to everyone that made it fun and rewarding.
Our next group is Tuesday 21st November … getting
closer to Christmas now. Thanks Kath.

Theatre Group Report – Beautiful
Beautiful is the inspiring true story of Carole King’s journey from school girl to superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song-writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom.
She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, when she was just seventeen. By the time she was twenty, she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and The Monkees.
But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her own voice and step into the spotlight.
Along the way, she became one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman, I Feel the Earth Move, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, One Fine Day, It’s Too Late, Tapestry and Locomotion.
We enjoyed all these fabulous hits in this excellent performance.

Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the Captain announced:
“Ladies and Gentleman, this is your Captain. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to Toron-to. The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth un-eventual flight. So sit back, relax and ….. Oh, my God!
Silence followed!
Some moments later the captain came back on the intercom.
“Ladies and Gentleman, I’m sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidently spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”
One Irish passenger yelled ….
“For @#*#* sake ….. You should see the back of mine!!!

EXTERNAL SPEAKER LAST MONTH
INTERNAL SPEAKER LAST MONTH
The Internal Speaker at our October meeting should actually be titled Internal Enter-tainer as our own Bert Berry delighted us with two great songs delivered with his usual flair and great singing voice. He brought the house down as they say. Well done Bert.
Christine Hond was the external speaker for our October meeting. Christine’s presentation was titled “Music from 5000 years of civilisa-tion”
She told us she was fascinated with traditional Chinese culture which was nearly lost under the Communist regime.
Her presentation included the origin of Chinese Culture and its empha-sis on the harmony between humanity, earth and the universe. She told us of the relationship between music and medicine and showed us some traditional Chinese instruments.
She concluded by telling us that these ancient traditions are being re-vived by the Shen Yun dance groups.
EXTERNAL SPEAKER NEXT MONTH
Our November speakers are two Senior Constables from Castle Hill Police.
Senior Constable (Christie) Desira and
Senior Constable (Jason) Roughley
Their presentation is—”Crime prevention and the role of the Community Support Officer”
As we know crime has many facets and can occur anywhere and at any time.
This being the case we can all be vulnerable, whether at home or out in our community.
What can we do to minimise our chances of being affected?
Ian Bowden
Speakers Convenor.

RIDING 1,000 KM WITH BROKEN LEG
One of our members has had a very unfortunate “brush with fame” and found himself reported upon in the “Daily Motorbike News” in Queens-land after a motorbike mishap on the western approach to Mt Glorious, South East Queensland.
Yes! Of course – it was Stephen Thomas, our intrepid and notoriously careful motorcycle rider.
Stephen suffered what was later revealed to be a broken fibula (leg bone near ankle) and his Honda motorcycle was slightly damaged when his bike slid from under him. He was being careful, but there should not have been soft tar left on the surface of the road. He had almost come to a stop when the front wheel found another area of molten tar and slid out from under him, causing the bike to fall on his leg.
Notwithstanding his “sore leg”, Stephen rode home the 1,000km with his broken leg. The reason for this was that he wasn't sure he had bro-ken anything but just had a sore ankle. If he had gone to Murwillimbah Hospital (his destination after the ‘off’), and there was a problem, he would have been stuck up there with no support. Then how would he have got home if he had to keep his leg elevated, with no accommoda-tion and a slightly damaged bike to get home. Lee, I am told, has been fantastic, having had to do most things for Stephen, and our club has been so supportive with visits and cards for which Stephen is most grateful. The support our Probus members have offered Lee is so very much appreciated.
After this story of disaster, however, I am now able to report that following surgery on Monday, Stephen will be able to get back to long dis-tance walking before too long – this is a “must” for him. He has purchased a knee scooter, which is brilliant he reports, as it is giving him much more mobility.
***************
Stephen is to leave his boot on for the next 6 weeks, completely non weight bearing, and not do any exercises for a few
weeks. No motorcycling until April next year which is not too much of a problem as it's too hot to ride December-March
anyway he says.
We all wish Stephen all the best for a speedy recovery and will make room for his knee scooter in our meeting room.

Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes: Dear Granddaughter, The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir per-formance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did! What an uplifting experience followed. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have no-ticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'For the love of God!' 'Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!' What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Noosa back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my young teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back. My grandson burst out laughing.. Why, even he was enjoying this religious experience! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks! Will write again soon. Love, Grandma
