Traffic safety in our community

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a super-vised area that is designed to keep students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street. Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws.

They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

Help your family stay warm this winter Canada Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying comfortable and preventing hypothermia when working or playing outdoors: Wear a warm hat—most body heat is lost through the head. Children should keep an extra hat at school. Wear layered clothing. Layers allow warm air to stay trapped around the body. Protect your feet and hands. Wear loose waterproof boots. If the boots have liners, carry an extra pair to replace damp ones or take an extra pair of socks. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Carry an extra pair of mittens to school, on outings, etc. Prevent dehydration and exhaustion, which can lead to hypothermia. Drink plenty of fluids and pace yourself when doing vigorous activities. Stay fit by exercising and eating well—people who are fit are less susceptible to hypothermia. If you stay indoors, avoid moving from a hot environment to a cold one. Excessive sweating caused from an extreme change in temperature increases the risk of developing hypothermia. Eat high-energy food such as nuts and raisins. If you are travelling (on the road or in the wilderness) carry emergency supplies.

November was a busy month in the gym. Classes completed the Handball unit and began

badminton just in time to start December. Throughout the duration of the Handball unit,

classes were competing for their respective houses. Each class held a house tournament, where

students competed for their house in an attempt to win both the class championship and to

contribute to their house becoming the school Champion. After all records were tabulated the

Blue House came out on top, just barely beating out the green squad, with 3 golds, 4 Silvers

and 2 bronze finishes. This earned the Blue House the chance to take on the still undefeated

Teachers squad in a handball match that was one for the ages. Sadly for the Blue House, the

Teachers were able to keep the undefeated record intact with a narrow 8-3 victory.

Congratulations Blue House!!

In addition to the class tournament, intramural handball also took place in November, and

again the winning team would get their chance at the teachers. After a close championship

match the Green House came out on top. However, their chance at the Teachers finished with

the same result, as the Teachers once again proved to be too tough.! But the students had fun

and the school spirit was excellent. Congratulations and better luck next time!

In interschool sports, both the boys and girls volleyball teams have been preparing for their

upcoming tournaments in December. Both tournaments will be held at Beatty-Fleming, with

the boys competing on Tuesday December 2nd and the girls the following day, Wednesday

December 3rd. Both tournaments will take place between 10:00 and 1:30 in the gym.

Good luck to both the girls and boys teams!

The following week Beatty Fleming will also be hosting the Divisional Handball

tournament. The handball team is a Co-ed team and the tournament will be Wednesday Dec

10th, and again, will run from 10:00-1:30. In addition, students can look forward to

Badminton team tryouts coming soon

Insπre. Gr23ness. 2gether.

―Ugh. Math.‖ Unfortunately, this is the attitude many students (and adults) have about math. If we're going to help our students achieve numeracy greatness, we need to turn these negative attitudes into

positive ones. So, our three-year math strategy, EngageMath, starts with something we have

enormous influence over—our attitude towards math.

Everyone is born with a math gene According to Stanford University Professor Carol Dweck, students who believe that intelligence or math and science ability is a fixed trait are at a significant disadvantage compared to students who believe their abilities can be developed. Like anything else, our talents and abilities in math are nurtured only if we have a growth mindset about them. A ―Yes I can‖ attitude when it comes to numeracy is the first step. A ―Count on Us‖ attitude comes next. To learn more about Dweck's research on student mindsets and how they help students fulfill their potential, watch her Ridley lecture here: http://bit.ly/RidleyDweck.

Online math parent resources While the Peel board’s EngageMath strategy plans out certain actions, it is by no means a magic bullet to answering the questions and challenges surrounding numeracy and student achievement. Math success for all our students requires a strong partnership between home and school. That's why we're committed to providing you with the parent resources you need to help us boost math achievement. Online resources to help you support your child or teen's numeracy success are available on the Peel board’s website at http://www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild/math. There you will find links to: tip sheets Homework Help Mathies.ca mathematics curriculum
