Lesson Plan (Infant – Preschool)

This section has the lesson plan for your “Bears Every Where” theme. (Week 1). Pre-planned lesson plans are done using a specific book. Books are taken off the “Bears Every Where” book list and can easily be found in your local library or store. All sheets are in order and labeled for each day the sheets are to be used. Print up the number of sheets you need each day. Worksheets are theme related and also include the letter N, number 9, shape rectangle, and color brown. Print up sheets on regular copy paper, for better durability, use card stock. Don’t be limited by your imagination… Use markers, colored pencils, paint, paint daubers, etc. Don’t stick to just crayons. ☺

Knock! Knock! Game

Have some fun with the old "Knock! Knock! Who's There?" joke. This is an activity that will have your child playing a form of peek-a-boo and learning what "knocking" is all about, learning the names of relatives and friends. You'll need to print out the door on the next page and cut the door out. Tape it to a piece of paper ( any color) only on one side, where it hinges. This way you should be able to open the door. Now have parents bring some pictures of family that they don’t mind getting cut up. Put a photo under the door flap, put the paper down on some cardboard ( or something hard) and then have your toddler knock on the door while saying "knock, knock". Then have her ask "who's there?” Have her open the door and identify who she sees. You might need to help her with the name. Do it again, and don't let her see what photo you put under the door flap so that she can be surprised! Then let her pick a photo to put behind the door and have you, knock and ask who's there.

A cute idea is print up some small pictures off the internet of Ernie, Big Bird, Dora, or any other TV character that the children enjoy. Won’t they be surprised to see their “friends?”

Supplies Needed:

• Printer and paper to print out the door image. • photos of friends and relatives • scissors • tape

Knock! Knock Who’s There? Game

Turn this game into a file folder game. Print up the following sheet onto white card stock. Cut on the dotted line to make the door open. Using double sided tape or glue, glue the piece of paper into a file folder. When you use this game, place the file folder on a table or on the floor so the child can knock on the door. (Make sure you put a picture behind the door each time. ☺

Knock! Knock Who’s There?

Bear Cave Hunt Find the bears in the cave! All children love to build and play with tunnels. Make a “cave” using a large blanket and some pillows for the toddlers to climb into. Find 3 teddy bears and place them inside the tunnel for the children to find. (Or print out the flowing sheet of bears and cut out). Tell the children that they need to find the bears in the cave and bring them out! If the cave falls over, let the children help you to build it again. As they find the bears, count them, 1, 2, 3 and talk about the size of the bears! What a great job in finding those bears.

Supplies Needed:

• Couch and pillows • Teddy Bears (or printed sheet of bears)

Active Learning: (Activity and Literacy Props)

Dramatic Play – Put stuffed teddy bears and blankets in dramatic play area so that children can make caves. Math –Bear number match up game. (See directions). Art – Put out various materials for children to make bears in the art area (paper, markers, fun fur, bear patterns, etc.. Read/Listen – Put bear related books in reading area. Check library for books and cd’s for reading and listening center. Writing – Put vocabulary words in writing area. Science/Sensory – Rank the bears (See directions). Blocks –Have children built a cave for their bears. Provide children with stuffed animals.

Family / Home Connection Using a blank letter format, write a letter to parents to let them know what the children are doing this week. Send home Monday. (Let parents know the book being read, bear activities, centers.)

TO DO List: Make: The Bear and The Bee book. Trim and put together. Make copies of Brown Bear memory game. Buy: Stuffed bears for dramatic area and for playing in block center. Beanie babies are a great size if you don’t have any. Gather: Any additional supplies needed for the week. Other: Go to your local library and ask the library to help you find more books about bears.

Bear Match

Find stickers with teddy bears on them. Make sure you have at least two of each kind of sticker. Place two of each sticker on its own index card. Have the children pick out one card. Find the match.

Rank the Bears

Have a day where children bring their teddy bears to child care. Have the children rank them by height, weight, fluffiness, firmness, cutest, cuddliest, fastest, funniest, most lovable, etc.

Monday Advance Preparation

• Locate the book you would like to use for the week

during circle time. Theme related and something age appropriate. You can check the book list included with this theme.

• Stick with one book for the week. • Ahead of time print up the wall charts for the letter N,

color brown, number 9, and the shape rectangle. Decide if you’re going to use color or B & W. If using B & W, color them ahead of time. Hang the wall charts in the playroom or around your circle area.

• Purchase any necessary ingredients for cooking or

Monday Circle Time

• Welcome each child – talk about today’s activities.

Encourage children to share anything new. Start circle time by doing Welcome to Circle Time song. (Page 20 this PDF file)

• Talk about bears with the children. Ask them if they know

what letter bear starts with and give them the beginning sound of bear. Ask the children if they ever go to the zoo and see the bears there. Let them answer.

• Introduce the letter of the week:

Letter Chant:

Letters, letters, Letters have names. What is the name of this letter?

• On a small dry eraser board, write down the letter N. Ask the

children to tell you the letter, and ask them if it is an upper case or a lower case NS. Once they tell you the letter, erase it, and write it small in the upper right hand corner. Ask them to give you words that start with the letter N. Sound them out so they hear the N sound. Draw the picture. (You don’t have to be an artist; the children enjoy your effort). You can also use the following sheets for n words.

• If you do “jobs” during circle time, you can do those now.

(Examples: What’s the weather outside? What is today’s day? Calendar)

• Have a large dry eraser board or large sheet of paper. Have the children do an interactive morning message. Until the children get use to this, you say and write it each day. A good example is:

Daily Message:

Good morning boys and girls. Today is ____________. Today we’re learning about bears. Love (your name) Once the children get use to interactive writing, you can ask them to help you write the message. Ask them what you should write. If they say Good morning, ask them what does Good start what, and let a child come up and write the letter G. As the child is writing the G, on your smaller dry eraser board, show the children and have them practice writing G on the floor or in the air. Have the children write several letters, and then together using a pointer stick read the daily message together. Count together how many letters they wrote. (Use 2 different color dry eraser markers. One color for the children and one color for your writing so they have a visual of the letters they wrote).

• Once children are seated, get ready to read the story. Read the title, author and illustrator. While reading the story, ask opened ended questions about the story. Encourage questions about the story, but direct children back to the book if their questions are not related to story. When story is done, circle time is done.

Interactive Writing – Circle Time

Using a large piece of paper, draw ahead of time a brown bear, red bird, blue horse, yellow duck and green frog. Write out next to each picture. Brown __ear, red __ird, ect. Each day during circle time, do one of the words. Help the children to read Brown Bear. Ask them to sound it out to find the missing letter. Let a child write the missing letter. As they are writing the missing letter, you can write it on a small dry eraser board for a visual for the children. Also ask the other children to write the missing letter in the air or on the floor.

Words of the Week – N Print up the following sheets onto white card stock. Cut out and laminate. Use these pictures during circle time if children are having a hard time coming up with N words. Use the dry eraser board for additional words that they come up with. Note: After laminating pictures, use velro dots on back to hang from flannel board. Rough side of velcro.

Monday – large Group

Lacing Cards

Children love lacing cards. You have the option of printing up color or b & w cards to color yourself and keep with your “Bear’s Every Where” theme. You can print up the color lacing cards, cut out – leaving about ½ an inch border, laminate, and punch holes around the card using a hole punch. Give the children lacing strings, yarn or shoe laces to lace the cards. The b & w set can also be used as an additional craft for the children. Give each child one of the cards, have them color and cut out. Have an adult punch holes, and they can lace using the above options of string. Tuesday – large Group

Bear Mobile

Color and cut out bears and honey. Punch a hole in each bear and honey. Tie string or yarn to the bears and honey. Let children paint a paper plate. (Sponges work great for this). Take the dry paper plate, cut ½ to the middle. Tape a piece of yarn (in a loop) to the top of the paper plate before you connect it. (So that you’re able to hang the mobile). Connect the two ends of the paper plate and staple. Punch 5 holes in the bottom of the paper plate and attach the bears and honey.

Bear Badge

Color and cut out bear badge. Make a hole in the top of the badge. Pull a length of yarn or string through the hole. Thread round cereal or colored noodles on each side of the bear badge. Tie both ends of the yarn together to make a necklace.
