From the CEO Live It Love It

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Dear Member,

2012 is well and truly underway!

We enter the New Year with many exciting improvements at norths. The Board and Management have been working on a number of things in the latter part of 2011 and we look forward to many of these coming into fruition as they are confirmed.

Thank you to those members who assisted in focus groups recently. Your insight is invaluable in our planning. We will commit to more focus groups later this year and provide other means for you to continue to communicate feedback. All members should feel free to let me know if they are interested in being contacted for involvement if you missed out last time or send me a note with any suggestions you have for our great Club.

The biggest message that our Board and Management have taken away from the latest feedback is the need for norths to get back to basics. So we are!

We have been reworking our loyalty program and are removing anything that may not enable us to offer you great service. Some things will take time to improve but other changes you will start to see immediately.

New chairs have arrived in the gaming room and we are currently working on more improvements to our gaming room.

We will also make many other subtle improvements around the place with the help of our staff completing working bees. One such initiative you

may notice is in our car park, making it cleaner, more inviting and safer than ever before.

We have received a lot of feedback about the food at norths. Your comments will help us better understand how in 2012 we can meet your needs and expectations. We will be working to improve as much as possible and ensure you won’t go hungry waiting.

If you didn’t check out our Gym in 2011, there is no better time than now to act on your New Year’s resolution of committing to a healthier you. norths Fitness continues to position itself as a market leader in Health & Fitness, helping you commit to a real

lifestyle change and ensuring you are not treated like a number.

There are also many exciting initiatives for seagulls Club that we anticipate being able to share with you in the next magazine for the next time you take a visit up the coast

Thank you for your support as we make changes around the Club. We look forward to positioning norths as your preferred venue throughout 2012!

There’s something about Carl Barron that can disarm the most hardest of audiences. There aren’t too many comedians who can crack a crowd by just standing in the spotlight, drawling out a “how’s it garn?” This ex-roof tiler’s weapon is his simple observational approach to everyday things, a skill that has touched many hearts and minds through his gentle, mischievous, self-conscious and original approach to comedy.

Born in Longreach QLD, this now Sydney resident has made leaps and bounds since winning Comic of the Year and Best Up and Coming Talent way back in 1993. Carl has since established himself as one of the most gifted comedy performers not only in Australia but around the world. Breaking DVD sales records continually spanning over ten-year period, Carl continues to draw the crowds in having just completed a national tour in 2011. However the man is not done yet and is embarking on a Sydney wide Club tour early in 2012 entitled “A One Ended Stick”.

Carl’s monologue will continue to discuss classic ideas and stories about Troy, worms, ants, aid and being Carl Barron, all explored in his 90 minute uninterrupted show. Carl will be working the stage here at norths on two nights - Saturday 3 March and Sunday 4 March, doors opening from 8pm. Tickets are $45 (+ $2.50 booking fee) and can be book by calling 02 9245 3000 or online at www.norths.com.au.

Three years since Shannon hit No. 3 in the ARIA album charts with Turn It Up, and despite having clocked up 10 consecutive top 10 ARIA chart singles, the country boy from Condobolin, NSW remains unaffected by success and committed to his hard-working rock ethic. “I’m a knockabout bloke, not so different to most people,” he points out. “It shows that the average bloke can achieve his dreams if he tries”.

Shannon’s fourth album, A Million Suns, stays faithful to his classic rock roots while ramping up the pace like never before. The first single released, “Switch Me On” sees Shannon hooking up with Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden to write a driving missive of redemption through love. Shannon also mentions a huge driving influence on his song writing is country legend John Williamson, who’ll be performing at norths in May.

Shannon, determined to keep that grassroots joy alive, still busks in the street with his brothers to this day. “Music’s about making you feel

something, and even more importantly, making you

feel that someone else out there feels the same way” says Shannon.

Shannon and his band will rock norths on

Saturday 31 March from 7.30pm.

Tickets are $45 (+$2.50 booking fee).

Come to the rescue of your friends and family and be the motivator they need to make health a top priority. We’ve been told time and time again how important physical exercise is for our health. It’s time to take action and be the Health Superhero your loved ones truly need, it could extend or save their life!

There has been a continual increase in obesity rates in Australia over the past few decades. Overweight and obesity affects 62% of Australian adults and 25% of Australian children.i

Alarmingly, Australia’s obesity rates are among the worst in the world, with 1 in 4 Australian adults being obese.ii Obesity has so many debilitating health impacts, significantly increasing the risk of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Gall bladder disease,

high blood pressure and many more chronic and potentially lethal conditions. There are a range of factors that can cause obesity, the good news is many of these causes are within our control and it is important to remember obesity is a preventable disease. i Dieticians Association

Not only are adult obesity rates alarming in Australia, childhood obesity is a growing concern. Here’s some great recommendations on putting health and fitness back into focus for the whole family:

Eat meals as a family This encourages healthier portion sizes, well balanced meals and you’re all less likely to snack if there’s a family meal prepped and on the way. Children who eat regular meals with their families eat more fruit, veggies, whole grains and calcium rich foods and less sugary soft drinks.i

Have an active family lifestyleSpend family time together at the gym and outdoors and add physical activity into your daily routine. Getting active as a family can be a really positive way to get out of the house and spend quality time together.

Set some boundaries Have some household rules on watching TV and playing computer games. Make it a habit to turn the TV off when dinner time comes around and all sit at the table together.

Spring clean your pantry Significantly reduce the amount of refined foods (such as chips, biscuits, white bread, soft drinks, fruit juices, cakes and sweets) available in your house. Foods high in sugars and refined (over-processed) carbohydrates create a spike in insulin release, causing the body to store more food as fat. Replace junk food with healthier items like fresh fruit and veg, high fibre cereals, whole grain breads and crackers and natural yoghurt.

Central Coast Bears Live It Love It

BEARS MEET WITH DAVID GALLOPCentral Coast Bears Chairman Barry Glasgow and CEO Greg Florimo met with David Gallop at NRL headquarters in mid-December to seek reaffirmation that the game is on track for expansion by 2015. Both Barry and Greg were buoyed by the optimism of the NRL CEO, who remains adamant that expansion is an important step for the game and that the Central Coast Bears are well placed.

With Rugby League’s new Independent Commission to be set in place at the beginning of 2012, the Central Coast Bears (CCB) will be taking their Bid to the next level. Not only are they considered by many pre-eminent judges in the game to be the leading contender amongst the only three realistic expansionary Bids, but with doubt surrounding the viability of some of the existing NRL clubs, the CCB believe that they have all of the necessary pre-requisites in place now should the governing body need to call on them before the code’s keenly anticipated expansion in 2015.

Central Coast Bears CEO Greg Florimo again demanded inclusion for this burgeoning power-house of the game. “We know from high-level discussions with industry experts that a key part of the strategic vision of the game dating back to 1985 was

for the Central Coast Bears to be established playing out of Gosford and representing not only the fast-growing region of the Central Coast but also the entire northern suburbs of Sydney – nearly a million people in all.” “Everyone knows that we have met the initial criteria of stadium, junior numbers, community engagement, membership levels, sponsorship interest plus filling the gap of the code across two vital sections of the marketplace. What a lot of people may not know, but deserve to be informed of, is the robust business case that we have built to support the relevant infrastructure that has been in place here waiting to be utilised to its maximum potential for well over a decade now.”

As a formal part of the Bid Document, which was an 80 page business case completed ahead of schedule, CCB commissioned the team at Coffey International Sport & Leisure and the Nine Rewards Report to conduct a detailed market research analysis.

A snapshot of the report findings include:

• AdmittingtheCCBintotheNRLwillincrease television audiences.

• Admitting the CCB into the NRLwill increase game attendances and activate the North Shore and Central Coast audiences.

• CCBentryintotheNRLwillnothavean adverse reaction on existing NSW franchises but actually drive crowds and gates for existing Sydney NRL teams.

• CCB are clearly the most popularexpansion option – even within Sydney.

• Thebeliefthatanewteamwillonlycapture current fans is false. The CCB will not only bring back most of the 40,000 fans lost to the game via the exit of the North Sydney Bears but will also bring a team to the final remaining Rugby League heartland without one – the Central Coast region.

Florimo finished by stating, “We have always been firmly convinced of our bona-fide qualities for inclusion into the NRL. Whether the opportunity comes with expansion or beforehand, we are comfortable with either scenario. We are resolute that our time has come, (that) we have not only met but exceeded every criteria that has been put in front of us and we are not going anywhere until the decision comes down in our favour and the game is best served by our inclusion.”

SPORTS COUNCIL REPORT

Happy New Year and good health to all!

With competitions having only resumed on 14th January and the Sports Council not hosting its first meeting of the year until the 9th February, I don’t have any official reports at this time. However, I do have some updates and reflections to share.

Jim McCoy, the delegate for the Indoor Bowls, reluctantly tendered his resignation to the council after 25 years due to ill health. Jim always had good input into our meetings and will be missed but he represented his beloved indoor bowling section well. The Council thanks Jim for his input and support and wishes him well, hoping his health improves.

The Chess Club reports that the Ford Memorial Open Tournament FIDE, rated over 9 rounds with entries of 71 players was won by, wait for it – 10 year old prodigy Anton Smirnov! Anton’s FIDE rating of 2024 is certain to significantly increase his eligibility to achieve the FIDE Master Qualification rating level of 2300. And only at 10 years of age!

The Joggers have some members in training at this moment for two races – a 6 foot track over 46km bush run in the Blue Mountains, the other is the Central Coast Running Festival.

Sorry to end this short report with this sad news but I unfortunately have to share the sad passing of The Photographic Society delegate Bernie Pokrzywa. Bernie was a great bloke, always bright, happy and always willing to offer his services to any Intra Club that needed his photographic expertise. All the delegates will miss Bernie, who had so much to offer. Vale Bernie.

As I always say to you, get involved – join a Club, you do not have to be a prodigy of anything to have a good time and meet different people. Keep your mind and body active.

Yours in Sport,

Warren Morris Director Secretary N.S.L.C Sports Council
