I’ve been knitting for as long as I can remember and the

more I learn about knitting, the more I realize there is to

learn. In my knitting “career” I have experimented with a

variety of techniques. Growing up in Norway, I learned tra-

ditional Norwegian stranded colorwork at an early age.

When I returned to knitting as an adult, I taught myself,

with the help of books and the Internet, to knit cables and

lace. And although I enjoy all these techniques, lace knit-

ting is the technique that inspires me the most.

My first design was published in 2007, a pair of socks

with a lacy heart motif. I then went on to design more

socks, as well as shawls, mittens, other accessories, and gar-

ments. I use a variety of techniques in my designs but the

one I keep coming back to is lace knitting. It never gets

boring.

Lace knitting can be very simple or very complicated.

You can knit lace in very, very fine yarn or in bulky yarn.

And it is this variety that captivates me. You can use lace

knitting for a delicate shawl or a chunky hat. There are

endless design possibilities.

In this book I decided to combine lace and beads in

heirloom quality designs. The beads add a bit of bling and

luxury to lace patterns. However, if beads aren’t your thing,

these lace designs are beautiful without them, too.

Whether you’ve never knitted lace before or consider

yourself an expert lace knitter, you will find patterns in this

book suitable for you. If you find it difficult to learn the

techniques from the photos and instructions, search

online for video tutorials. Keep practicing! It doesn’t matter

if you make a mistake. You can rip out your knitting and

use the yarn again. Just think of it as better value for the

money.

These days we have more choice in yarn than ever

before. We can order yarn from almost anywhere in the

world. We can choose from cheap man-made fibers to the

finest animal fibers (ever heard of qiviut? It’s the cham-

pagne of yarn). Yarn comes in all price ranges. I like knitting

with natural fibers and I admit to being a yarn snob. My

preference is for good quality natural fibers. I have tried in

this book to use yarn across a range of prices. If the yarn

suggested in a pattern is too expensive for you, there will

be cheaper alternatives. If a yarn isn’t available where you

live, don’t be afraid of choosing something different. Read

the section on substituting yarn.

Knitting should be fun! Yes, it can be stressful, challeng-

ing, and frustrating at times but overall it should be fun. So

try to enjoy your knitting. Don’t give up! Keep practicing! If

a pattern is a bit too challenging, choose an easier one and

come back to the challenging one when you have more

experience.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I’ve enjoyed cre-
