Itʼs funny because when you do dress up, people automatically ask if you have a presentation, or if youʼre a business major. Neither of those things has been true yet. But all too often, university is a place where people come in their sweat pants, and a lot more guys are uncomfortable dressing up. We set out to change that. As Iʼm sure many of you have noticed, for the past month Suit Mondays havenʼt been practiced. We have not lost faith in the event, nor have we “cracked” as some have suggested. This cancellation is simply for a couple of different reasons. First, and selfishly, the logistics have been hard to work out for us, the founders, and so we had to settle for a “business casual” Monday (for those of you who donʼt know what that means, take the course “Business Communications” or consult a member of the Business faculty, or your well dressed Registrar). Secondly, I received some correspondence questioning whether or not the event was divisive. They were asking if by encouraging people to dress up, we were excluding those who perhaps would like to, but simply canʼt afford it. Some have even gone so far as to suggest that there might be pretension in the event. Thirdly, there has been a disappointing lack of participation. Although some have, and we are grateful for it, many have not – even some who had said it was a good thing. I know that this is a Crandall struggle, students here are not gung-ho for nearly anything, but it is disappointing nonetheless. In reality, we are considering canceling the event or perhaps rescheduling it to a different day. But I personally would love some feedback on the issue from fellow students. Is Suit Mondays a good thing? Should we encourage people to dress well and be comfortable with that? Or is it a negative thing that excludes those who canʼt afford to dress that formally at this time in their life? Does it suggest pretension or a capitalistsʼ revival? What are YOUR thoughts? Daniel Meister, who was a co-founder of Suit Mondays (with Joel Goodwin), agreed to a short interview. SEE PAGE 5

An article that takes local, national, and international news and gives it to you as it is, and explains how it will affect you. by: Amy Pike

Young Adults give bad name to Young Adults" The Times & Transcript reported that two young adults: Scott Mason MacPhail, 18, and Hugh John Ryan, 21 were arrested in connection with armed robberies that occurred last Thursday night in Moncton. One of the robberies was so bad that it sent a man to hospital with stab wounds. At this time though, these men are only being charged in relation to one of the robberies. MacPhail and Ryan appeared in court last Friday joking and laughing with each other while waiting for the judge to appear. These young men threatened the life of another man, and were laughing in court - there is no wonder people accuse youth and young adults of being malicious and disrespectful. Although I understand that suspects are innocent until proven guilty, their behaviour in court makes them guilty of giving young adults a bad name, and I think they deserve a sentence for that.

Royal Wedding is a Royal Disappointment For Many Commonwealth Girls." On Wednesday, the Telegraph Journal reported that Prince William has decided to marry his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton. Although this seems to be hopeful news for Britain, it is tragic news for every single (and some not-single) women of the commonwealth. The couple is reportedly set to wed sometime in Spring or Summer 2011, after an eight year courtship. William gave Kate a blue oval sapphire-and- diamond engagement ring originally

given to Princess Diana before her wedding to Prince Charles." For those who aren’t familiar with the couple, I will give you the down-low. William is a hunk, and has consistently been at the top of my top ten most attractive men in the world list (probably since I was about five). His brother used to be a top contender to

him on these attractiveness lists, but ever since he got into some trouble a couple of

years ago, he has seemed to be a lot less attractive. WIlliam is second in line to the throne, after his father. Many people however have argued that Charles should just step out of line so that William can become King after Queen Elizabeth’s passing."Catherine Elizabeth (Kate) Middleton

grew up in Berkshire, England and met Prince William at the University of St.

Andrews where they were both studying. She is a commoner, and by marrying the Prince

(who is in line for the throne), she gets the opportunity to potentially become the Queen someday (this is very rare for someone not in a royal line). Middleton dresses fantastically and has been seen wearing clothes coveted by women worldwide (including me). She was also placed on People’s best- dressed list in both 2007 and 2010. !"Their story is typical - two young adults, meeting at University, and going on to get married - but typical they are not. There is no doubt that everyone should be looking out for photos from a gorgeous wedding this summer (rivaling only the Swedish Princess Victoria’s wedding which took place this past year). And let me tell you, you boys better marry your girlfriends up quickly, because if Prince Harry decides to come to Crandall, your girls may just decide to take a shot at the only eligible British royal left!

SASS

Y CDear Sassy C,What do I do?! I have a friend that I love but she follows me around everywhere! We live together, have class together, eat dinner together. I feel like I never have a break from her! I need some space, but I donʼt want to hurt her feelings! HELP!!! -OMG Iʼm SO Annoyed and Itʼs Only First Year

Dear OMGISAAIOFY -I donʼt think anyone in this world doesnʼt have that kind of friend. The kind of friend that we love but just annoys us no matter what they do... ESPECIALLY in first year!! Itʼs important to remember even while your friend is annoying you... you LOVE them and want to still be friends! So break it to them easy. Why not open up the conversation by offering them a delicious cupcake from The Cake Box (1644 Mountain Road). Cupcakes make everyone happy.Be honest the whole way through. Donʼt tell them a lie - like that youʼre stressed out because your grandma died. It may make for an awkward conversation if they ever meet your grandma.

Make it about YOU and not them. Tell them youʼve been busy with school work and that your way of dealing with stress is taking time to yourself. Or tell them that you never really get a chance to do schoolwork because youʼve just been spending so much time with them. And then, hereʼs the hard part (especially if you live together!!) - make sure you actually take that time apart. Close your bedroom door. If theyʼre sitting at a table in the cafeteria, donʼt go and join them. Donʼt sit next to them in classes. Itʼs hard (because Iʼm sure your other friends are with them, too) but remember - youʼre the one that needs space. Youʼre the one thatʼs annoyed. So, youʼre the one that needs to take the steps to make that annoyed state of mind change.Make sure you take some time each day to talk to them and say hi - this means after you take some time, youʼll still have a friendship to come back to.And, if youʼre too much of a coward to do that, then suffer through it for the next three weeks and then... itʼs Christmas break and youʼll have a whole three weeks without them and if thatʼs not enough time to yourself, I donʼt know what is. Good luck!

A website that has FREE acoustic sessions of upcoming popular indie artists? Yes

please. Daytrotter is based in Illinois; and are a part of Horseshack recording studio. These acoustic sessions are

said to be more like a radio station’s “lounge recordings” -- the artists are often moving

from city to city on tour and stop at Daytrotter to record.

Daytrotter hosts 28 songs by

7 bands per week. 90% of the downloads are completely free and are exceptional quality. Each band has unique album art

that isn’t featured anywhere

else on the internet; and (to top it all off) they have archives of all

artists that have ever recorded with them. You have to create an account to download

anything - but there is no spam and it’s completely legit. I

love me some daytrotter.

Grizzly BearGrizzly Bear are a Brooklyn-based psychedelic folk rock band who broke on through to the other side, and then hit their heads on the door on the way out. This band is truly queer. Their sound is characterized by beautiful yet haunting layers of vocals, and minimalistic, folk-melodies which occasionally bloom into colourful bursts of energetic rock music. Grizzly Bear is the product of a successful over-complication of two simple genres, and are by far one of the most experimental bands I’ve ever heard.

Their newest album, Veckatimest, placed 1st on the US Billboard of Independent Albums on June 19th, 2009. The album begins with a very powerful

track, ‘Southern Point’ and is proceeded by one of the catchiest songs off of the album,

‘Two Weeks’. These two songs are easily accessible; they’re upbeat, rhythmic and fun. But be warned! After this brief introduction, the sounds of the album begin to grow excessively experimental, and consequently harder to embrace. With time though, one begins to appreciate the richness of the recordings, the intricately layered vocals, and the perfect placement of its audible peaks and troughs as the confounding songs become more and more familiar. I won’t recommend any certain songs... listen to the full album!

Crandall has always had problems. You can hear complaints when people realize they have to attend chapel. Students lack a voice in matters around the school. And you can only buy lunch during certain times - forget trying to get a burger at 3:30.

But since weʼve moved into the new building, it seems like the few problems have turned into many problems. It all started when I was sitting in class in Stultz Hall one day and realized that I couldnʼt connect to wireless. Someone might say, “you shouldnʼt be using internet in class”, but I actually go onto the intranet during class to download the powerpoint for the day. When I went to complain about the lack of wireless, I was told “We know the problem is there,” - but that there was no real solution in the making.

I was so excited to finally have a student center, too! As a transfer student from Saint Maryʼs University I saw the benefits of a student center - a place where you could meet up with your friends, grab pizza, and just hang around. Staff and faculty werenʼt there. Just students. It was awesome. The best coffee was always in the student center. And we have a student center, but now it just sits there, empty. Try asking someone why: theyʼll tell you that the floors arenʼt ready.

That leads me to the question: did we rush moving into the new building? The floors werenʼt ready in the student center, the cafe wasnʼt ready

to open, and the Link leaks when itʼs raining. Add onto that; the internet doesnʼt work and lots of the outlets in the floors donʼt either.

Iʼve always been told thereʼs no point in complaining unless you can offer a solution. And so I sit here trying to think of a solution, and all I can say is... we shouldnʼt have moved into the building until Winter Semester 2011. But hindsight is 20/20. What should we do now? Well - the administration should start listening to the concerns the students are voicing. WE are the ones the building was built for. WE are the ones that have classes to attend, that have looked forward in anticipation to a cafe and a student center. Weʼre the ones that pay tuition.

I encourage you, the student, to come out to the open forum Student Council is hosting on Tuesday, November 23 to make YOUR concerns heard. If you have the same ones as me, come anyway. If you have different ones, PLEASE come. We want to make changes for you, but weʼre unable to if we donʼt have the support of the students. We want to hear the problems and start to change them on your behalf.

See you there!!!

NEED ADVICE?What am I supposed to do if all my mid-term marks were Ds and Fs? Iʼm freaking out! Help!!

Dear Completely Crazed;! You ask; “IF all my mid-term marks were….” Now, since I do not believe that you would waste the time of your busy advice columnist on “what ifʼs”, I will assume that your mid-term marks are actually Dʼs and Fʼs.

First, I must ask: Are you a social butterfly? Do you ʻhang outʼ with friends more often than you ʻhang inʼ your room or library studying and doing assignments? If so, then you might want to ʻcut your wingsʼ, so to speak, and stop fluttering around so much.

Now, first and foremost, I expect you will have to swallow your pride a little bit and admit

you need assistance. This is a good first step. This is nothing to

be ashamed of or afraid of doing. Do you  believe that Crandall University wants you to succeed? Yes! Good. So, crawl out of your shell and get to the

professors offices for a chat and recommendations. Every professor is different and has

different expectations, so learn what these are.

In case you did not realize, there are LOTS of other options. Consider one on one tutoring, help on writing essays, how to study and prepare for exams properly.  Since you are ʻfreaking outʼ, why not enroll in the stress

management class?Donʼt sweat the Fʼs,

Donʼt sweat the Dʼs.Take a deep breath, get

help and you will see your grades improve by leaps

and boundsGlad I could help! See

you around.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARDBY: AMY PIKE

! One thing I have learned over my years at Crandall is that everyone has a voice, and everyone wants to be heard. Some of us donʼt always know what we are supposed to say, but I firmly believe that we all have something valuable to say. This is why I am sometimes saddened when I pick up The Beacon - the studentʼs newspaper - and find only humorous or very negative articles. It isnʼt that I feel that these articles donʼt have validity or a place in the paper, but I firmly believe that as a student body, we have other things to talk about and I am sure that we can have a much more diverse student paper. I know there are many

students here at Crandall who are interested in music, movies, artwork, news, technology, and more. If you have an interest, why not volunteer to write

an article for the Beacon about it. I write this article to encourage you to decide to get involved in this way. I think every student who reads the Beacon has an ideal of what it would be like. For that ideal to be realized, we need you to start writing in it. Have questions? Need help? Want to be the next star writer? Email [email protected]. Let your voice be heard.

“I firmly believe that we all have something valuable to say.”
