My family’s been sharing a house on LBI forever. My sister’s kids sleep til noon, my brother still cheats at Scrabble, all the floors are sandy and all the towels are damp... and then just as when I’m about to lose it... we

all went to The Gables... one great meal with my great family.

November 11, 2015 marks the 125th Anniversary of the incorporation of Beach Haven as a Borough. Beach Haven was conceived in the 1850’s when Archelaus R. Pharo, a wealthy Tuckerton, New Jersey entrepreneur, went duck hunting from Bond’s Hotel at the southern end of Long Beach Island. He and several wealthy sportsmen from Philadelphia loved the Island, but craved more tasteful living quarters.

In 1867 Pharo purchased 666 acres of undeveloped sand hills, brackish ponds, tidal creeks and marshes located 2 ½ miles north of Bond’s for $243. This area had a navigable creek that could be used to scow in the necessary building materials. In 1873, Pharo transferred the 666 acres for $6,666.66 to the Tuckerton and Long Beach Building, Land and Improvement Association. Charles Parry, one of the sportsmen from Bond’s and President of the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, was elected as the first president of this land association.

Development of Beach Haven began in 1874 and no seashore resort would be considered complete without the addition of luxury hotels. By 1876 Beach Haven would boast the Parry House, the Engleside, the Beach Haven House and, in 1883, the Baldwin Hotel. At this time, there were also a score of sprawling cottages, baymen bungalows, a church, a fire company, a school, a yacht club, a public wharf and several boarding houses.

In 1890, the town incorporated as the Borough of Beach Haven, the first town to do so on Long Beach Island and William L. Butler was elected the first Mayor.

Today, Beach Haven is a thriving beach resort destination for tens of thousands of people in the summer and home to hundreds of year-round residents. The Borough boasts a thriving downtown district, the island’s only amusement park, the Borough’s own public school, a public library, two museums and a summer stock theatre..

There are several parks, throughout our one-square mile, which are utilized to entertain thousands of concerts goers; beer, wine and food festivals; craft shows and sport camps. Surfers, fisherman and sun-lovers pay homage to the white sand beaches and waves of Beach Haven year round.

In 2015, the Borough will be promoting the 125th Anniversary by offering a commemorative beach badge, and offering many celebratory events including a Borough-wide open house, free family concerts at the bay and beach, stand up paddle races, a boat parade, a nostalgic baseball game and family picnic, and an Octoberfest celebration. The culminating event will be the rededication ceremony and Gala on the November 11th Anniversary. Throughout the year the Borough will be collecting items for the Time Capsule that will be enclosed in the new Borough Municipal Complex.

Today, the Borough is committed to bringing commerce back to Beach Haven and keeping the thriving for another 125 years. The new Visit Beach Haven website and Facebook page are signs of the changing times.

6 MAY 2015 BEACH HAVEN - THE HEART OF LONG BEACH ISLAND

Summer. Though winter’s storms often serve up the Atlantic’s largest waves, both seasonal visitors and year-round locals have a special place in their heart for surfing Beach Haven in the summer. The history runs back to the days of 10-foot Greg Noll boards, early sessions at Holyoke Ave, and hanging at Koseff’s Surf Shop. Today, you’ll find families three-generations deep who enjoy the waves of the Queen City.

Summertime surfing relies mostly on windswell. The constant Atlantic sea breeze creates small but consistent southerly flow. And experienced surfers are always watching the long term forecast for tropical activity. When hurricanes stay out to sea, they can push powerful groundswell from thousands of miles away.

This summer may be a little different, however. The US Army Corps of Engineers is preparing to replenish Beach Haven. This means the contracted dredge company will pull sand from offshore “borrow sites” and pump it into the beaches and dunes to better prepare LBI against future storms.

In the past, this process has wiped out the sandbars. Recent Island projects, however, have seen the beaches return to their natural

shapes more quickly. In addition, Mayor Keeler and some conscientious beachgoers have requested different slopes from Jeffries Ave. to Iroquois Ave., as well as 12th St. and Taylor Ave. to hopefully keep the profile of the beaches we all love.

There are several shops in Beach Haven to keep you geared up for summer – from the necessities like boards, wetsuits, and surf trunks to apparel and summertime accessories. Farias Surf and Sport, 823 North Bay Ave., has a tremendous selection of all around gear and offers surf lessons. South End Surf N’ Paddle at 220 South Bay Ave., has surf gear and is specialized toward stand-up paddler offering SUP tours and yoga on the bay. Both have gatherings and events all through the summer.

Imagine a maritime museum just entering it’s 9th year that has been honored twice by New Jersey Monthly Magazine as one of NJ’s best museums! Free to all visitors, the New Jersey Maritime Museum has two floors of exhibits appealing to people of all ages. DVDs and digital slide shows play in a number of display areas telling the story of New Jersey as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Large pictures, shipwreck artifacts and historic documents cover the walls.

Over 5,000 wrecks are catalogued for perusal or research. One large room is dedicated to the Morro Castle, a cruise ship that ran between New York and Havana for four years until she was set afire and ended up on the shores of Asbury Park on Sept. 8th, 1934. Founder and President Deborah Whitcraft and author Gretchen Coyle have written “Inferno at Sea” using the museum’s vast collection of research files.

The U.S. Life Saving Service/Coast Guard comes alive with life-saving medals, Lyle guns and beach apparatus. Divers’ recovered artifacts tell stories of passengers and crewmen aboard historic ship wrecks - from bottles and gold coins to a child’s shoe and old tiles. The museum’s continually changing exhibits bring maritime history to life. The tragedy of the Texas Tower, erected during the Cold War, is told on tape

to fascinated audiences who may not know the story of our country’s attempt at security. Even dirigibles are highlighted when they tragically dropped from the sky over New Jersey waters. New Jersey’s illustrious maritime history ranges from before the Revolution to the present.

Exhibits of life as it used to be along New Jersey’s coastal communities can be found throughout the museum; prohibition along the Jersey shore; a newly added pound fishing display; custom-designed models of the ill-fated Texas Tower and life-saving methods employed by the U.S. Life Saving Service; and a NOAA-funded display of the 1860 loss of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey vessel, Robert J. Walker, are just a sampling of the vast collection at the New Jersey Maritime Museum. Research and lending libraries are located on the second floor. The museum’s popular Internet Café is available to everyone free of charge. Our Black Whale Gift Shop lures kids and grandparents with nautical toys, educational materials, and books.

Outside are old anchors and maritime relics recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic, and artifacts too big to fit inside. They make a perfect family photo opportunity. A memorial to commercial fishermen can also be found at the museum’s entrance in recognition of those who work in the world’s most dangerous occupation.

The New Jersey Maritime Museum welcomes everyone – from people curious

about maritime history to researchers and genealogists. Join and become part of this exciting museum where history comes alive for kids, parents, and grandparents. Different levels of membership are offered. Monthly programs feature knowledgeable speakers. The museum is a non-profit organization, with an active Board of Trustees at work. Donations are always welcome. Knowledgeable volunteers are ready to answer questions and regale visitors with tales of New Jersey’s illustrious maritime history. Museum hours are 10:00 am – 5:00 pm daily June, July and August. Off-season hours are held Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. Tours can be arranged upon request. The museum is available to rent for parties, weddings, family reunions and meetings. Call for our Friday childrens’ program, ALO and ReClam the Bay activities, and other museum events. Or check the

website. Friendly, well-informed docents volunteer daily, enhancing each visitor’s experience.

The theme for this year’s Annual Benefit, on Saturday, September 12th, 2015 from 5 pm to 11 pm, is “A Celebration of Beach Haven’s 125th Anniversary”. This indoor-outdoor tented party draws over 450 people who enjoy a pig roast by Okie’s, a wide array of food, music by Al and Roger Jinks, a full service cash bar, as well as a Silent and Chinese Auction. Tickets are $55 (members $50) and are available online, at the museum, and at the door on the 12th.

Be part of the excitement - visit the premier maritime museum in New Jersey! Become a member, volunteer, and visit often with family and friends!

14 MAY 2015 BEACH HAVEN - THE HEART OF LONG BEACH ISLAND

It’s an age-old dilemma in Beach Haven. Can’t decide between Kubel’s and the Black Whale for dinner. You’re curious see what new beers they have on tap, but you only have two nights in town. You have to stop in and see you’re your pals at the Chegg. Then the crew wants to rock the Shell tonight, but you want to be up early for a paddle on the bay. You’re craving Barry’s Do-Me-A-Flavor, but wouldn’t mind riding your bike north for lunch at the Veg or El Swell. And of course, you still haven’t been to Tuckers since you heard they started serving that World Famous LBI-branded hot sauce. Does that leave any time for your favorite Chowda?!

Maybe you need to make a point to be at the Taylor Avenue Waterfront on May 30 for the second annual Hop Sauce Fest where you can experience the best of LBI, and the region in general, all in one afternoon. Hop Sauce Fest takes great pride in curating this event and working with just the right partners to bring something fresh to the Island.

The non-profit Jetty Rock Foundation, Beach Haven’s Spice-It-Up, and Shore Point Distributors held the first Hop Sauce Fest last year, bringing together craft beers, gourmet hot sauces and delicious local food with a lineup of all original music. This year they’ve upped their game with even more brews, fire, and emerging regional bands, plus food from of your favorite LBI eateries. So now you can see all your friends

in one place in addition to yumming up the Black Whale’s clams and oysters, El Swell’s fish tacos, the Chegg’s wings, Country Kettle’s Chowda, Buckalew’s sliders, Barry’s cheesesteaks, the Veg’s raw tacos, the Shell’s salsa and smoked tuna dip as well as Tucker’s truffle fries - all in $5 sample sizes.

The day starts with the Hop Sauce Tune-Up at 9 a.m., South End Surf N’ Paddle’s fun paddle race on the bay at Taylor Ave. Gates open at 11 for the true sauce and brew aficionados and the bands play all afternoon, finishing with headliner, Jukebox the Ghost, from Brooklyn, who recently

played Conan. Then of course, there’s the after party at Tucker’s.

For $40 you get entry and a tasting glass that lets you try all every fine craft brew on tap as well as all the delicious hot sauces. And if you’re the designated driver or just a hot sauce and music lover, a General Admission ticket is $10. This is the cutting edge early season festival that is sure to become a tradition.

20 MAY 2015 BEACH HAVEN - THE HEART OF LONG BEACH ISLAND

The talk of the town this year has been The Woohoo, the Queen City’s newest casual dining joint. Located at 211 South Bay Ave. (formerly the Frosted Mug.) and opened by locals, The Woo Hoo will specialize in burgers and ice cream but will also do smoothies, coffee, and a mouth-watering breakfasts – egg sandwiches and fresh-fruit breakfast bowl. They plan to open early and stay open for the late night crowd.

An exciting addition to Beach Haven’s shopping scene is the Yuletide. It’s Christmas in July! (And June, and August, and all the rest of the year….) at this festive new Bay Village retailer, stocking classic holiday décor including LBI-inspired ornaments made by local artists. Yuletide opened in April to a fantastic response.

Shore Good Donuts, which has become a popular stop in Ship Bottom, is excited to announce it’s second location, this one serving their favorite donuts at 14 S. Bay Ave. in Beach Haven. Shore Good has become a staple on the Island for fresh donuts made to order and served warm. The menu features over two dozen specialty and signature donuts from the reinvented Inside-Out Jelly to the wild Shore is Spicy, or create your own.

There’s been other buzz about Beach Haven this spring as well like Ship Bottom Brewery doing a collaborative beer with the Chicken or the Egg. Killer Beesting IPA on tap will likely be hotter than an August afternoon. We also have a feeling that the ladies will be all over the new Queen City Apparel line at Raquel’s Closet in Bay Village. The Gables will be celebrating its tenth anniversary under the wonderful ownership of Sondra and Steve Beninati. And of course, Beach Haven has a fantastic list of events to celebrate it’s 125th Anniversary like the Throwback Baseball Game pitting the Borough Employees vs. the Beach Haven Fire Company.

It’s been 10 years since we completed the renovation on this wonderful 1892 Victorian and opened its doors as a fine dining ala carte restaurant and inn. It has been a gratifying lesson in honoring the historic building and fashioning a restaurant that is reflective of this decade and a part of the island’s history and future.

The Gables is part of the fabric of a vibrant Beach Haven. Beach Haven is one square mile, making it the perfect walking and biking town, and strolling or peddling in is how many of our guest arrive. Summer nights are enjoyed outdoors in our garden and our porch. When folks ask what the dress code is for The Gables we always say, the women dress like a million bucks and the gentlemen like a buck fifty....yes, anything goes, high heels or flip flops...at The Gables, it just works.

Great food from a great chef is the key...

Running a fine dining kitchen requires taste, brains, stamina, flexibility and team work. Each event, evening, and meal requires planning, skill and the ability to dance....yes dance....moving gracefully through the translation of what your clientele want and expect to giving a bit more than what’s expected on the plate. Richard Diemer, executive chef, has been balancing on his toes with the seasonal offerings that run from the sublime Raviolo al Ova, a large freshly handmade ravioli with artisanal ricotta and spinach topped with a hen egg to the homemade marshmallows on our S’mores tart. Diemer’s hand and palate drive the flavors and presentations from the kitchen, he is exacting, inspiring and at times annoying in his quest for perfection from himself and his crew.

Join us as we begin our next decade. Check out our menu and reserve a table at galeslbi.com.

Long Beach Island, NJ – The Long Beach Island (LBI) summer season will once again uncork in grand style when 10 New Jersey wineries join together for the “ 4th Annual Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” on Saturday and Sunday June 6 – 7, 2015. The festival will take place on Saturday from 12 noon – 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am – 4 pm. In addition to the wine festival activities, this year’s event on Sunday (June 7) will also feature the “Beach Bums Corvette Car Show”. “Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” is proudly sponsored by The Asbury Park Press and the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce/LBI Region DMO and produced by GPS, Inc. The event is part of the “Cheers to Summer Weekend” happening on LBI which features two great events -“Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” and the “Lighthouse international Film Festival”. The wine festival will once again be located on Taylor Avenue, behind Bay Village in Beach Haven, NJ.

“We are proud to once again hold our wine festival in Beach Haven on LBI. Moving our event from mid-May to early June is an exciting change for us. We anticipate great weather and are really thrilled to be part of the Cheers to Summer Weekend! We want people to come to this great weekend of events, enjoy all the things we have to offer

and, most importantly, support LBI as we reopen this part of the Jersey Shore for the 2015 Summer Season. We are also very enthusiastic about the Beach Bums Corvette Car Show that will take place on Sunday at the wine festival grounds. This awesome event, featuring hundreds of corvettes, has been happening on LBI for years and is the perfect addition to the weekend! We are telling people to come sample great New Jersey wines, enjoy culinary cuisine from some of LBI’s best restaurants, shop the artisan crafters and enjoy great live music. We are really proud to be part of supporting LBI and we want everyone to be part of this annual summer kick-off festival”, commented GPS, Inc owner and festival organizer, Kathy Bullock.

The “4th Annual Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” is proud to feature some of the New Jersey’s finest wineries: Auburn Road Vineyard, Amalthea Cellars, Coda Rossa Winery, DiMatteo Vineyards, Monroeville Vineyard & Winery, Plagido’s Winery, Renault Winery, Cedarvale Winery, Tomasello Winery and Wagonhouse Winery. This prestigious group of wineries brings with them numerous award winning wines, (including double gold, gold, silver and bronze winners) from the International Finger Lakes Competition, The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and the Indy International Wine Competition just to name a few.

The 10-featured wineries will be pouring for sample and sale more than 250 wines ranging from clean, crisp white wines to robust red wines to refreshing fruit wines. Many wineries will be unveiling their newest summer wine offerings, which will certainly include the first of the season’s summer sangria. There will certainly be something available for everyone…wine aficionado to wine “newbie”!

Also featured at the festival will be several of LBI’s most well-known and loved eateries including: Bistro 14, Country Kettle Chowda, Crust and Crumb Bakery and Carmen’s. Each of these LBI culinary “institutions” will be offering festivalgoers a wide variety of tempting cuisine and treats. In addition, the wine festival will also play host to an artisan crafter area and continuous live music on stage by some of the region’s best bands.

The festival has gained loyal support from many in the region. As Lori Pepenella, Destination Marketing Director for LBI, stated, “The Pour into Summer Wine Festival has become an LBI summer kick off institution. The perfect blend of music, wine and local flavor. We are looking forward to

welcoming ten NJ wineries back to Beach Haven and everyone out for a fantastic shore weekend.”

Tickets for the “4th Annual Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” can be purchased in advance for $12 and at the gate for $15. To purchase advance discount tickets visit www.visitLBIregion.com. Admission to the “4th Annual Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” includes: wine tasting of more than 250 New Jersey wines and a souvenir wine glass. Attendees will be able to not only sample wine but also purchase wines by the bottle or case. Spectators and anyone 21 or under is FREE.

Anyone wishing to learn more about the “Pour Into Summer Wine Festival” can call the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce/LBI Region DMO at 609-494-7211 or visit www.visitLBIregion.com. Large groups and bus groups can call GPS, Inc at 609-758-5400 for more information.

tipsSwim Near a Lifeguard

Don’t Fight the Current

Understand Beach Warning Flags

Lifeguard stands are staffed each day from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stands are located from 12th Street south to Leeward Ave.

Instead, swim parallel to shore until you feel the current relax; then, swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow and a short swim parallel to shore will bring you to safety.

Flags posted on the beach and flying from lifeguard towers represent ocean hazards and surf conditions. Please remember that ocean conditions can change quickly. Check with lifeguards on duty if you are unsure of safe conditions.

The past 25 years, the Red, White & Blue Committee has brought the 4th of July Fireworks to Beach Haven. The Red, White & Blue Committee is comprised of a small group of private citizens who give back to the community by celebrating this patriotic event in a very public way. We know that over the years, the event has become an island tradition.

For all these reasons, the Red, White & Blue Committee couldn’t be prouder and we thank you for your sharing this wonderful island tradition! While the committee works all year to prepare for the coming fireworks display, the real credit goes to the individuals and businesses funding this celebration of our nation’s heritage. This year, we ask you to be a part of this patriotic group by considering a donation. On July 4th, when all eyes are skyward, you can say, I am helping to keep the spirit of America alive!”

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRIOTIC CONTRIBUTION!
