ENERGY STAR® is the label given by the EPA and theDepartment of Energy to products that exceed federal energyefficiency guidelines. Homes earn this label if they use at least30 percent less energy than a home built to the standard energy code.

ENERGY STAR Homes achieve this distinction in five ways,beginning with the design of engineered heating, ventilation andair conditioning. The design takes into account the bends andturns in ductwork, register locations, duct lengths, connectionsand air flow, all of which results in energy cost savings and moreconsistent temperatures from room to room.

Air-tight ducts are a second way energy is saved. These areachieved by using straps, collar ties and mastic per third partyprotocols which translate into lower heating and cooling costsand better air distribution. Energy efficient vinyl windows withspecially selective glass are a third way ENERGY STAR Homessave money. This window treatment reflects the sun’s energyaway from the home in the summer and the furnace’s heat backto the home in winter which reduces fabric fading as well as lowers energy costs.

Quality control is assured because energy features are documented, inspected and retested by third parties.Independent parties also certify that homes carrying the ENERGY STAR label save at least 30 percent more energy than theModel Energy Code requires.

This is historic land stretching fromBrunswick County to Georgetown, founded bySpanish in 1526. In 1726, it was claimed by theBritish who named it for their king, George II.Today, the abundant waters from five majorrivers connecting with the Atlantic Ocean,attract outdoor sportsmen from around theworld, who come to reel in bass, bream andcrappie in fresh water and flounder, black drum, and winter trout in the tidal creeks.

North of Georgetown is DeBordieu, one of theoldest beachside colonies on the Atlantic coast.Lafayette gave it its French name (“God’s bor-der”) in 1777 when he landed on its goldenshores. A South Carolina realtor bought it fromthe George Vanderbilt family in 1985, transform-

ing the 2700 acres into an elite residential resort.

Continuing north are PawleysIsland and Litchfield with theirlow-country charm, sharing a bor-der with Huntington Beach StatePark, one of the best birding sitesalong the eastern seaboard. Andthen Murrells Inlet, SeafoodCapital of South Carolina, and 20miles further, Shallotte, SeafoodCapital of the World. The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, designed byRobert Trent Jones in 1948, was the area’s secondcourse. (A $6 million renovation in 2001 kept thethe Dunes at the top of the game.)

The woman standing at the brochure rack in the hotellobby made a decision. “We’re going to BrookgreenGardens today” she said to her husband. “We keep sayingwe’re going to see what’s there, and today we’re going tofind out, “ she said with finality.

So they came and found a place where history, art, andnature merge seamlessly. A place nestled within the 60-milestretch of the Grand Strand where one of the most signifi-cant collection of figurative sculpture by American artists inthe world is showcased among native plants and flowersunder a canopy of historic live oaks. The place isBrookgreen Gardens where for 75 years visitors have cometo marvel at its beauty.

The idea for Brookgreen Gardens was born in 1930 when philanthropist, Archer M. Huntington, and his wife, thefamous sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, read a real estatebrochure about “Four Colonial Estates on the WaccamawRiver for sale.”

The price was $225,000 for 6,635 acres of land thatstretched from the Waccamaw River to the Atlantic Ocean.They purchased the property plus several thousand addi-tional acres to build a winter home; however, very soonafter the acquisition, they decided to devote much of theland as a protected wildlife refuge and to dedicate anotherparcel of land as a sculpture garden.

In 1931, the Huntingtons established Brookgreen Gardens,A Society for Southeastern Flora and Fauna, as a non-profitcorporation. It opened it to the public the following year,attracting visitors who might not ordinarily go to an artmuseum and engaging art lovers in a deeper appreciation ofthe natural world and its delicate environment.

Over the years the beauty of the gardens, the natural sur-roundings, and the animals in their native habitat haveawed millions of visitors. Open daily , this National HistoricLandmark offers tours, classes, cultural events, exhibitions,and festivals. These programs shed light not only on thesculpture, plants, and animals seen at Brookgreen but alsoon the rich history of the South Carolina Low Country.
