However, it’s important to remember these powerful packets contain highly concentrated detergent and require the same discipline as common household cleaning prod- ucts when it comes to safely using, handling and storing. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), in 2014, poison centers received reports of over 11,000 unintended exposures to highly-concentrated packets of laundry detergent by children 5 and younger. Today, car drivers know how important it is for everyone in the vehicle to wear seatbelts and seats to be properly adjusted. Unfortunately however, many fail to observe safety concerns when loading items in the car especially for a road trip. Heaviest items belong on the bottom and should be pushed up tight against back seat. Lighter items are best stowed to assist filling up the empty space around the heaver items. Nothing should be stacked higher than the line of the back seats.

Join the Campaign to #SlowDown and Save Lives

A new web site has been launched for a global campaign to #SlowDown and save lives: www.unroadsafetyweek.org The web site will be the main source of information, messages and materials related to the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week to be held May 8-14, 2017 on managing speed. The #SlowDown campaign seeks to increase understanding of the dangers of speed and generate action on measures to address this major risk for road traffic death and injury. The campaign contributes to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal target 3.6. National and local governments, international agencies, civil society organizations, foundations, private companies, and the public generally are invited to plan and host events marking the Fourth UN Global Road Safety Week. Child Passenger Safety News

Information provided by our partners at:

Q:

A:

Is LATCH safer than my seatbelt ?

LATCH is not safer than seatbelts and vice versa. It is another option for parents. A seat should be installed using whichever system provides the best, most secure fit for the car seat..

Where is the safest place in the vehicle for

my child? The safest place in the vehicle is where the car seat fits securely and correctly. Many times this is the center rear seating position.

Q:

A:

Is it ok to use a car seat that was purchased

from a garage sale?

It is NOT recommended to use a secondhand seat because they pose a safety concern. It is impossible to determine if they have been involved in a crash,

missing pieces or if they have been recalled.

Spotlight:

The Taney County Health Department has worked with Safe Kids Springfield since 2007 when one staff member was certified as a child passenger safety technician. Thanks to the relationship TCHD has with Safe Kids, 5 staff members are now CPS techs and one is an instructor, allowing the department to reach more families with car seat education. They are also a partner with the Cribs for Kids program, helping provide local families with a safe sleep environment and safety education through classes at the department. Together, the TCHD and Safe Kids are working to keep kids in Taney County safe and injury-free.

During Spring of 2013, a group of local pharmacists saw the need for the city of Springfield to have an easy way to dispose of expired, unwanted, and unused medications. That is when the Ozarks Area Pharmacy Association teamed up with local organizations like the Greene County Sheriff ’s Department, Community Partnership of the Ozarks, City of Springfield Environmental Services, Watershed Committee of the Ozarks, the UMKC School of Pharmacy at MSU, and Safe Kids Springfield to meet this need. Through the assistance of the DEA and its biannual Medication Take Back Event, this hard-working group of volunteers have hosted 8 successful events During these 8 events alone, this group has gotten rid of 11,445 pounds of unused or expired medications. Unused or expired medications are a public safety issue leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse. Plans are to host the 9th event on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10am to 2pm. This event provides a means for safe disposal of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Check the DEA’s website soon (www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov) for spring drop-off locations in Springfield around the state.

“I’ve been involved with Cruisin’ for Cribs for several years. I look forward

to this ride every year. It’s a small way for me to help area babies safe to

sleep. I like riding the scenic back roads of the area and to have the chance

to help the kids just makes it that much better. Bikers love causes and

what better cause than a safe place to sleep for area babies.”
