Principal’s Report Dear DSPS School Community,
School Athletics
Our school Athletics Day will now be held next Wednesday 20th March at the
Drouin Recreation Reserve (Football/Netball grounds) on Sinclair St Drouin. This will
involve some changes to our planned program and the time required to set up the events. I am
sure, however, that as a community we can pull together to make this a great day. Our aim is
to have fun, encourage participation from all the kids and to select a team of Years 3-6
students to represent the school at the Tarago District Athletics on April 3rd. We will
certainly appreciate any help we can get from parents such as: use of a large trailer to transport
the high jump mat to the ground and back (prior to the start of the events), assisting with
measuring events, timing events, walking students from one event to the next and setting up
the shelters in the morning and taking them down in the afternoon. Most of all, we would like
to encourage parents to have fun, encourage the kids to have fun and make a great day of it!
School Council
At this stage we still have several parent positions vacant on School Council. I encourage you
to think about becoming a member of School Council. We meet about twice per term, discuss
policies, finance, grounds and school improvement. Our School Council is made up of parents
and staff and work together in a very cooperative, supportive way. If you are interested in
becoming a part of our School Council please give me a call at school and I will be happy to
let you know what is involved. It really is very easy and interesting!!
Mathematics Picture
Last week I published a photograph of a lady with lots of eggs! The aim of the picture was to
hopefully generate a discussion about how to solve the problem. In many cases we like to get
the right answer, however, we overlook the strategies and mathematical thinking that needs to
go into solving the problem.
Yesterday I attended a Mathematics session in Melbourne with Maths Specialists across the
state and their Principals. One of the main messages for the day was about the thinking and
the ability for children (and adults) to explain how they went about solving a problem.
Our Maths lessons in schools are becoming more and more about the strategies and less about
doing lots of repetitive Maths questions in books.
A simple question such as ____ - _____ = 9 can be solved in many ways. Having students
make the problem with different objects, draw a picture, use a calculator to test options and
also record their strategies, involves far deeper learning than solving a “closed” problem.
Advanced students can use large numbers, fractions and decimals to answer the question, the
not so advanced can do the same problem, but maybe with the assistance of a number of

objects given to them (eg. 20 buttons) to explore the concept. Getting them to explain what
they are doing is the key to knowing if they really understand or whether they need further
learning.
Have a go at this at home and see what you and your children come up with!!
Consent to Photograph, Film and Record Students
A reminder that the Consent to Photograph, Film and Record students form should be returned
to school by Friday 22nd March.
Farm World Delivery Service
All families will receive a letter regarding Farm World Delivery Service. Drouin South PS
needs you and your extended family members to respond to the request for helpers. It is an
absolutely fantastic experience to be a part of this event and also raise money for the school.
If you wish to find out more, please contact Aoife Shaw (0419351260) or Emma Soumilas
(0409808874) and they can help with any questions you may have.
