Project Statement

According to UKCISA, there were 436,585 international students coming to study in the UK between 2014 and 2015 (Dominic Scott,2016). One of the biggest reasons people chose to study abroad is to be immersed in an entirely new culture (VISTAWIDE, 2004). However, based on the previous user research, it is usually hard for international students to gain sufficient opportunities for in-depth cultural experiences.

Therefore, the aim of this project is to help international students who live in the UK to feel belonging by being wholly or partially involved in the British culture by grasping the latest information about festivals, events or particular local level to be held in the UK and allow them to join in these activities with locals.

After considering the safety issues of such an idea, it was decided that University is a good place to start with the service. Moreover, taking Loughborough Students’ Union for example, their aim for the following year is to drive the UK’s best student experience especially improving their work with international students. Therefore, there seems to be an opportunity to cooperate with Student Unions of different Universities in the UK to expand the service and make it become a long term project.

Page 3: Be Part of the Culture_Yi-Ning Lee.compressed

Concept & Value Proposition

The service is set up to cooperate with Student Unions and help hold regular events for international students according to the represented festivals and particular local events in the UK. Meanwhile, the Students’ Unions will recruit their British students to be the volunteers and train them as local guides for taking international students and experiencing the events together.

By participating in the events held by the Student Union and being guided by locals, it is easier for international students to have a deeper understanding about British culture and get some in-depth cultural experiences. Additionally, international students are encouraged to be the cultural ambassadors of their countries and get travel credits as award.

Value for International Students

By being a professional British cultural ambassador, it is a good opportunity for local students to improve their CV. Additionally, they can get a discount price for travelling to a city or joining some interesting festivals and local events with international students. Furthermore, they can gain the opportunity of making a more diverse group of friends and having a local guide when travelling to international students’ countries.

“It is great to have opportunities of being with locals, but I expect to have more in-depth cultural experiences.”

6. After the baking activity, all the international students who chose to join the Christmas dinner party got together in the church cafe to help decorate the place and prepare the meal with local volunteers and chefs.

5. The next activity which Tomoko chose was making a Christmas pudding. The international students were taught to make the pudding by the local volunteers in small groups.

1. Tomoko has used the BPC website and chosen to follow some of the events like Christmas Party (17th December), which is coming in two weeks. Tomoko just received a new message from Students’ Union reminding her to book the event.

2. Tomoko followed the event booking instruction and found that she can arrange the activities by herself. Moreover, she felt interested in the second event, family Christmas experience, for celebrating Christmas with one of the volunteers’ families at their home on Christmas Eve. Tomoko decided to sign up for this event as well and waited for the later notification as it was a limited-number offer.

3. On the morning of the day, some volunteers and international students who chose to go for the ice skating met together at the university to take the coach.

7. At dinner time, international students were introduced the background stories of celebrating Christmas and some relative custom. Additionally, all international students and volunteers sang the Christmas songs, had Christmas crackers and ate the tranditional Christmas meal, including the pudding they made earlier, together in the church cafe.

8. Fortunately, After the Christmas party event, Tomoko also got the invitation from one of the volunteers’ families. She was pretty looking forward to the upcoming experience!

4. They spent a whole morning ice skating and went back to the University or got off at the church cafe where the next activities were held at 13:00 with enjoying a free lunch, a sandwich, on the coach.

1. Tomoko has uploaded her proposal in order to apply for being a cultural ambassador of Japan.

2. After the proposal has been accepted and having a two hours training, Tomoko took two British students to fly to Japan and be their local guide.

3. After the tour, Tomoko was informed to select her reward through the BPC website. Tomoko chose to have 5% discount for her flight ticket as the reward and just got the money from her bank account.

4. Meanwhile, Tomoko went on the BPC website and wrote some good comments for the two British students.

1. Hidden navigation helps to keep a cleaner layout.2. The use of numbers is more intuitive than the words.3. Consider to show each event in each box rather than categorizing the events monthly.

1. The arrangement of images is a bit too crowded and it might be better to have some short description about each category.

It might be easier to have a general idea of the website by seeing a long screen in the beginning of the testing.

1. Make sure the menu will be pinned to the browser.

1. It is better to see all the selectable events in the same screen, so the previous layout might be easier for users to operate.

1. In order to enhance the security issue, participants will be asked to join the Christmas dinner party first for volunteers to have a general evaluation about them and then get the opportunity of applying for this additional event. However, it might sound more flexible as long as the participants have already joined any of the events held by Students’ Union before, then they can get the chance to apply for this additional event.

1. The special offer provided by the baking skills exchange might make the event arrangement become too complicated. It seems easier if participants can only earn the travel credits from being cultural ambassadors.

1. It might be better to add a booking confirmation page.2. Should users log in with their University account before booking?

1. Change the showing way of event description from sliding right to covering the event image with opacity when mouse over as the showing way of sliding right will cover other event images.

1. This page can be popped up after clicking the booking button. 1. The description of the activities might be too small to see. It might be helpful if users can click the event images and get pop-up light boxes with bigger size of words.

Guiders of the EventAll guiders of the event are locals who volunteer to help improve the international students’ experiences in the UK. They are recruited by student union and trained professionally.

Represents levels of experience

Event DescriptionChristmas is a festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed as a religious and cultural celebration. Popular modern customs of the holiday in the UK include gift giving, completing an Advent wreath, Christmas caroling, church services, a special meal and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, and holly. Here we provide some classic Christmas activities for you to select and hope you can have deeper understanding of Christmas and get a great cultural experience after your participation.

Family Christmas ExperienceApart from the Christmas party, there is another opportunity for you to get an in-depth cultural experience which is celebrating Christmas with one of our volunteers’ families. However, all candidates are required to participant any two of the events we held before (Christmas party is included). Moreover because of the limited number offer, we will inform you whether you obtain the chance afterwards. The transaction will be confirmed after your participation.
