Principle

Much of what we “see” isn’t in our visual field, it’s in our mind, in the form of thoughts, feelings and narrative.

We can maximise our chances of being kind to our minds if we can really make use of our “mind’s eye”.

The one that gives us Hindsight, Insight, Foresight and Oversight. Notes See if you can notice when you’re using one of these four sights. Hindsight thoughts are likely to sound like “Looking back…”, “In hindsight…” (yes really’), “If I’d known then what I know now…”. Insight thoughts might sound like “Ahhh, now I get it”, “I’m responding this way because…”, “I know a bit about that already”. Foresight thoughts are more like “What do we need to plan for”, “What risks should we consider”, “Don’t forget to…”. Oversight thinking includes things like “Let’s look at the bigger picture”, “What might…say about this?”, “Thinking about this from a different perspective”.

The Four Sights Circle – HIFO Model

Notes Do you have a more dominant way of “seeing”? What might the benefits of practising all four sights? Which one do find hardest? How might you practice that one more?

Hindsight

Insight

Foresight

Oversight

Hindsight

• Is 20/20 – or is it? • Can be a source of distortion - Hindsight Bias • Is at the very core of self-understanding (Mark Freeman) • Can help achieve insight • Involves reflection, learning and critical evaluation • Should also be undertaken with compassion

Notes Think back to a situation that now has you thinking “I don’t know what I was thinking”, or “I have no idea why I got so worked up about that”. What can hindsight teach you to help you in the future?

A word about criticism

• Think of a criticism as someone else’s opinion that you don’t happen to agree with.

• Consider it useful for keeping you awake and thinking things through. • Remember other people are as entitled to their opinion as you are to

yours. • Examine their opinion as you might an interesting piece of news. Is there

any truth in it? • Remind yourself that while the criticism may not be your choice, how you

respond to it most definitely is! Notes Think about a criticism or complaint someone has levelled at you. Be brave – ask yourself if there is ANY truth in what they’re saying. Use all your knowledge from earlier episodes to manage any emotion you feel. Try and exercise all the sights to come to a balanced opinion of their opinion. What have you learnt?

Insight

• Can be thought about in a number of ways • The “Aha” moment…”Ohhh – so THAT’S why that happened!” • Associated with intuition. • A Knowing…”I have some insight into that”. • Understanding yourself…”I felt anxious in that situation because of

what I said to myself” (Construal). • Facilitates ingenuity, innovation, vision, critical thinking, clarity and

awareness (to name a few). • Is an “eye-opener” that can help you identify patterns and trends. • Is impaired in people with psychiatric illness (brain function and

neurotransmitters). • Requires a complex set of brain calculations.

Notes What insights have you had since you’ve been involved with Be Kind to Your Mind? Have you learnt anything new about yourself? Have you had any “Aha” moments?

Foresight

• Is the ability to judge correctly what’s going to happen in the future and act accordingly.

• Allows for anticipation, prediction and preparation. • Keeps us alert to opportunities and threats. • Is likely to become sharper when combined with hindsight. • Can trigger strong emotion, so regulation is critical. • Is the name of lots of psychology businesses!

Notes How do you plan? What sorts of things do you take into account? How do you manage your emotional response (if you have one)? In the coming weeks, pay special attention to when you’re using foresight, how easy or not you find it, and how (in hindsight) helpful it is.

Oversight

• In our discussion, is to have perspective (not a failure to notice something).

• Allows us to see the bigger picture. • Provides an opportunity to monitor what’s happening in real time. • Requires detached compassion.

Notes Take some time over the coming weeks to step outside your situation and look in on it (as if the action were happening in the centre of the Colosseum). What would someone with no personal investment in the action see? Is there anything you might do differently as a result of this oversight?
