Context

entrepreneurship & everyday life

• Some observations – from personal experience, navigating life, lived experiences and lessons leading an Arts Faculty

• Family of entrepreneurs • Social Entrepreneurship Learning Journey to Sweden (2007, Pioneers of

Change)• Activism & entrepreneurship • Learning and unlearning (belief systems and language) • “entrepreneurship is about the everyday, daily life; the civic practices of living,

rather than an extraordinary accomplishment” - Hjorth and Bjerke (2006: 100)

rethinking & revisioning

Mzansi Golden Economy

• Arts, culture and heritage sector is of both tangible and immeasurable intangible value. • Government, together with civil society, has a responsibility to conserve and protect our

culture and heritage for current and future generations.• There is no one place where the contribution of cultural and creative industries was being

quanitifed.• No baseline data and no plan to measure change in economic performance and inform

policy and resource allocation decisions• Different reports commissioned across sectors tell a golden story: cultural and creative

industries contributing significantly to the GDP of the country (tens of billions from audio visual, music etc.)

rethinking & revisioning

A new language & vision

• Music industry, craft enterprises, jewellery and minerals beneficiation, clothing, textiles, footwear & leather competitiveness…

• “The new vision of arts and culture goes beyond social cohesion and nourishing the soul of the nation. We believe that arts, culture and heritage play a pivotal role in the economic empowerment and skills development of a people” – Minister of Arts and Culture, 2011

• The Arts are not the nice-to-have side-show; we are unapologetically claiming our space as artists and creatives

rethinking & revisioning

An emerging paradigm

• We will only achieve the kind of traction we are looking for when truly appreciate artistic practice

• Artist (whole and integral part of)

• How we go about our work, our products, influences, ideas, materials, tools, skills etc.

• Recognition (we see you)

entrevolution

Entrepreneurship and the Arts

• To do so, we must broaden our understanding of entrepreneurship

• “In order to maintain the freedom so central to the arts, we must broaden the contemporary view of entrepreneurship, to become something involving the whole of society and not merely the economy. A broadening enables artists to talk about their practice in an entrepreneurial context. At the same time, we open the way for the production of various types of knowledge and begin to recognize artistic aspects as important.” - Novia University of Applied Science, & TaideART
