  • Evaluation 2012 Supporting todays young people for tomorrows economy

  • This project is one of a number of programmes under A2Dominions investing in homes and local communities business objective which aims to boost the financial well-being of young people through employment, training and enterprise pathways.

Be Inspired is a forward-thinking holistic approach to helping young people find their direction, guiding them along their chosen pathway and providing the financial, practical and emotional support to keep them motivated to succeed.

This evaluation captures the incredible journey that some of our young people have been on...

achieving important personal development goals overcoming obstacles in their family and home life helping us design and deliver the programme,

    and finally,

becoming role models to their peers and inspiring other young people in their communities.

The report draws on data from surveys, partner and staff feedback, case studies and testimonials.

Welcome to the first evaluation of A2Dominions Young Enterprise Initiative. . .

    2

  • Aimed at established A2Dominion residents, the one-year pilot was set up to establish a unique networking and support platform, providing pathways and career opportunities as well as connecting young people with trained professionals, role models and motivators who could influence their future success.

With a focus on delivering high quality interventions, the following targets were set for each project:

At the end of the first year Be Inspired has already made a real impact on our target group of 14 to 24-year-olds, exceeding key performance indicators and fulfilling the original aims of raising aspiration, enabling career progression, increasing resilience and championing entrepreneurial skills amongst our residents.

Be Inspired provides personal development pathways for young people through innovation and partnership.

This year we have engaged with 425 young people through our own events and projects managed by partners.

Together with our partners, 268 young people engaged in enterprise workshops and seven have now set up their own enterprise projects. With the help of Be Inspired, Natalie from Winchester has launched her own face painting business.

Be Inspired provides help for young people to support them with their careers

We have invested over 6,000 in a bursary scheme for young people.

40 young people have applied for bursaries and 25 young people have received funding, with 90% of the target group now successfully re-engaged in an employment, training or education pathway.

Be Inspired provides online and face-to-face mentoring to support young people when they need it most

By accessing Future You young people can now interact with professional mentors, careers advisors and trained peer mentors online at any time.

17 young people have received mentoring support, with 50% receiving individual, face-to-face support provided by trained A2Dominion staff mentors. From the total, 80% of those that received mentoring said that they feel much more positive about their future.

Be Inspired provides apprenticeships, work placement and work experience opportunities in a variety of trades and professions

Six young people have now taken up apprenticeship roles in A2Dominion and we now have in place new pathways programmes offering volunteering, work tasters and work placements as preparation for apprenticeship opportunities.

Be Inspired is using innovative ways to engage young people to think about their future and learn new skills

Inspired Radio 87.7fm engaged over 100 young people from Spelthorne in radio broadcasting over the summer.

Young people who participated in the radio project have now established a weekly band night with funding from O2 and Youth Music.

  • A2Dominion invested 92,000 in Be Inspired and so far a total of 425 young people have engaged with the project, either through direct interventions or by accessing our services and events.

Based on an average of each young person receiving four interventions, our unit costs are 57.50 per user; in future years, we anticipate costs will reduce significantly due to the reduction in major overheads such as printing and marketing.

The success of the pilot enabled us to secure 15,000 of external funding in 2012/13 and 35,000 in Year 2. We have a number of bids in the pipeline.

Be Inspired funders now include Heathrow BA Community Fund, O2, Youth Music, Spelthorne Borough Council, London Borough of Ealing and Slough Borough Council.

    Partnership and Value

Be Inspired has also enabled us to develop an important and valuable network of new partnerships. These include O2, The Young Foundation, Future You, Kick it Out, Brooklands College, Soundhive, BANG Edutainment and the National Apprenticeship Service. Be Inspired has greatly benefited in terms of their expertise, exposure to new contacts and funding streams, engagement of young people and promotion, all of which will contribute to the programmes future growth and sustainability.

Through Kick it Out we enabled young people to participate in a free mentoring and leadership programme at Chelsea Football Club.

    Through the Young Foundation, we...

    - secured the London Eye and Marriott Hotel County Hall for a very special Dragons Den event at no extra cost to the programme;

    - secured key mentoring partnerships for each entrepreneur with the Roundhouse Theatre, Sports Direct, Nicky Clarke Hairdressing and Hamleys Toy Store; and

    - secured free workshops with Price Waterhouse Coopers on Financial Literacy for the young entrepreneurs.

Through Soundhive, young people were able to meet and work with internationally acclaimed UK indie band - Hard FI.

Through Future You, young people were able to access free online careers advice, counselling and mentoring.

Through the National Apprenticeship Service, we received additional support to help scope our apprenticeship programme.

Investing with our partnersSummary of programme achievements:value and partnerships 5

  • Why? Young people have been disproportionately affected by the economic downturn with 1million 16 - 24-year-olds currently NEET. Data provided by Aveco estimates that the cost of a NEET young person on benefits is 4,491.93 per year. However, national data shows that the development of enterprises has risen by 33% among young people since 2008 and is one of the fastest growing sectors. Our aim with Be Inspired was to provide a range of new enterprise and work experience opportunities for young people and prepare them, through bursary, mentoring and support, to successfully access those opportunities.

Outcomes. In our initial consultations we surveyed 240 young people and parents. The results told us that bursaries, apprenticeships and mentoring, were the most popular projects which they felt would have the most impact.

At the end of the year 90% of young people who received a bursary are now re-engaged in education, employment or training and 83% from a total of 17 young people that had mentoring said they felt optimistic about their future. The combined offer of bursary and mentoring has made a positive difference on the young people we have worked with - particularly those who were undecided about the future.

    Summary of findings6

  • Summary of findings 7Who? We intentionally decided to focus on young people aged 14 - 24 who had ideas and aspirations but didnt know where to access support - the bedroom entrepreneurs and DJs, the aspiring hairdresser or the next high-flying apprentice.

Outcomes. Be Inspired engaged a core target group of young people from diverse backgrounds; they were not necessarily the hardest to reach - just young people with the motivation but not the means.

From a total of 10 young entrepreneurs, 70% were from BME backgrounds. From a total of 17 mentees on the mentor programme, 50% were from BME backgrounds. From a total of 25 bursary applications, 40% were from Supported Living - young care leavers moving into independent living. Since coming on the programme 100% of the entrepreneurs and apprentices have said that their confidence has improved.

Finally, 90% of young people starting the mentoring programme said they wanted to improve their confidence, with 60% saying they hoped it would help them think about their future.

This data shows that from the start of the project we targeted and engaged the right mix of young people; those with great ideas but perhaps lacking in confidence.

Where? Our research identified the highest numbers of young people aged 14 - 24 living in Spelthorne (1,822), London (1,977), and Winchester (256), which informed our choice of where to develop new partnerships. We were able to deliver Be Inspired workshops in Staines, Tower Hamlets, Hillingdon, Winchester, Salisbury, and Ealing and also support young people across the group through the online Be Inspired General Enquiries inbox. Young people can now register an interest in one or more of our programme strands, contact an adviser for help and apply for a bursary online.

Outcomes. Be Inspired supported 425 (10.5%) of the

    4,055 young people identified

a total of 70% of beneficiaries came from Staines and London and 28% from Winchester.

Young people from Winchester and Salisbury have told us that they would like more Be Inspired projects based in their area so they dont have to travel to London for major events. Since setting up the online inbox we have had over 80 enquiries, mainly around bursary and apprenticeships.

  • How? A leadership group was established to manage the programme with representatives from across A2Dominion and external partners.

Responsible for overall performance of the pilot, the group, chaired by the Head of Community Involvement, agreed resources and expenditure, project plans and quality assurance and ensured the project met agreed targets. Task groups were set up to oversee each strand: bursary, apprenticeships, mentoring and enterprise, and fed back progress through the leadership group. Young people were involved in shaping the programme through the design of publicity and promoting workshops to peer networks.

At the project initiation stage we asked young people what was the best way to communicate and engage with them. They told us we should prioritise three key areas:

providing fun and interactive workshops; providing advice and guidance on

    careers; and

youth club-style activities. Based on their feedback we designed and delivered an exciting offer of engagement activities, including radio, music production, film, football, and We Do Ideas a platform for business ideas.

Outcomes. Partnership: As part of the leadership group review we asked partners how we could develop the group in the future. They said that we should widen the external partnership membership to increase experience in specific areas particularly youth volunteering and involve more residents. Local authorities like Ealing Council, with whom we are working closely on apprenticeships, were identified as a key partner to join the group in the future. They also said that regular communication updates on what is going on would be useful.

Project Team: As part of the end of year review, the project team highlighted a need to establish referral routes into Princes Trust, or similar organisations, for young people with complex multiple needs and to work better with benefits advisers, Jobcentre Plus, to provide a package of financial inclusion support for beneficiaries. Be Inspired entrepreneurs starting businesses while in receipt of unemployment benefits were a particular concern, as there was a previously unidentified knowledge gap in being able to provide the right advice.

Communication: Feedback from our network of 40 young people showed that they were happy to continue communicating with Be Inspired through Facebook. We now have 80 regular Facebook users and over 100 Twitter followers for Be Inspired.

Young entrepreneurs also see a future role for themselves as youth champions, helping to shape Be Inspired and engage other young people.

Engagement: We consulted with young people to produce and distribute our Be Inspired marketing materials. Over the year we delivered over 15 workshops for young people to get involved and receive advice on career pathways. The team worked with creative partners like Soundhive, GoldSeal, BANG Edutainment, Kick it Out and We Do Ideas to provide innovative workshops in music, sport, and radio. A total of 90% of those that took part in Be Inspired Radio enjoyed the experience and said that they would do it again, with a cohort of 15 gaining an OCN accreditation. 68 young people participated in We Do Ideas workshops, 16 young people went to Chelsea as part of the Kick it Out Football Mentoring programme, and 200 students took part in the Enabling Enterprise programme, which the schools are eager to run again. Finally, 80% of young people who did the Future You training rated it as excellent or good, as it improved their confidence and provided access to a range of online resources to help them plan their careers.

  • The Bursary award scheme is open to all A2Dominion residents. Launched in July 2012, the programme provided grants of up to 300 to help young people age 14 -24 with their career development plans.

Through the bursary scheme we provided funding for course equipment, clothes for interviews, IT equipment and repairs, contributions to further education course fees and travel costs.

Since the launch Be Inspired has allocated 6,000We have engaged with 40 young people and supported

25 of them with funding through the bursary

In total, 90% of the cohort who received funding are now re-engaged in employment, training and education or have a clear career pathway plan

Five young people who received bursaries are now accessing one-to-one mentoring.

My name is Kai Watson and I am an A2Dominion resident. Anybody who knows me knows that I have a love for Formula One, and that I hope to become a Formula One racing driver one day. I have watched the sport from the age of two until now and I love it! To become a racing driver you first have to start competing as a go-kart driver. This requires you to do some practical and theory training first at a go-karting racing school, but this is very expensive. So you can imagine how excited I was when I read that A2Dominion were offering bursary fund awards to young people who needed help to fund a course they wanted to do. I had so much fun, made a lot of friends, and the best thing is that I passed my module course, so I can now enter the Daytona Indi Kart Championships that run from the end of January to November 2013. I never thought Id get the bursary award, but Im so glad I applied. I am extremely excited to start the championship and Id like to say a big thank you to A2Dominion for giving me a step up into my possible future career, and for believing in me.

Since the launch BE InSPIrEd has allocated 6,000, engaged with 40 young people and supported 25 of them with funding through the bursary.

Here is what Kai Watson has to say on how the Bursary helped him. . .

  • The Enterprise programme was launched in August 2012. The programme was designed to provide young people with enterprise skills, business support mentoring and investment.

200 young people from Thomas Knyvett School and Mathew Arnold Schools in Staines took part in a 3-6 week programme and three challenge days, receiving funding for their business ideas.

We Do Ideas delivered business ideas creation workshops in Staines, Tower Hamlets, Hillingdon, Winchester and Salisbury, engaging 68 young people. Of the 68, ten were selected to go through to the preparation stage for the Dragons Den.

Through our partnership with the Young Foundation we worked intensively with a group of seven entrepreneurs to prepare them for a Dragons Den-style event to be held for them at the London Eye.

The five business ideas received a total of 9,000 investment from the board and 2,000 from O2. We also brokered mentoring relationships with Nicky Clarke Hairdressing, Hamleys Toy Store, the Roundhouse Theatre and Sports Direct for our entrepreneurs.

So who are the entrepreneurs, what do they do and how has the investment and support helped them?Original Since Manufactured (OSM) are an urban fashion design enterprise, set up by young people from Havelock, Ealing. It has been operational since 2011, established a supplier in China and has already designed and launched a range of products, including T-shirts, hoodies and baseball caps. They also have an upmarket mens fashion range in the pipeline. OSM have used their investment to develop a website and design its summer range.

This is what OSM had to say about the support offered through Be Inspired:

natalie Clark, a resident from Winchester, has set up Bobos Face Painting Company. With investment from A2Dominion, Natalie has registered her company, developed her business plan, purchased new products and is in the process of setting up a website. Natalie has secured business at a number of events and parties around Winchester.

This is what Natalie had to say about Be Inspired:

I couldnt have achieved this without the support of the Young Foundation and A2Dominion. Its amazing to be able to say I am a businesswoman and that I can create a positive future for my little one. Staff have been great and I have laughed and cried lots but at the end of it I have a business!

    natalie Clark, Bobos Face Painting

I wanted to cry when I heard you were saying yes to my idea. Its amazing to know someone else believes I can do it. Im looking forward to working with my mentor and registering my business. A2Dominion staff have always been really helpful.

    Gina Simpson, Georgies Hair Services

Gina Simpson is a resident from Winchester who has plans to set up a community hairdressing company. On receiving investment Gina has worked on her business plan, set up and registered her company and delivered some hairdressing tasters at community events in Winchester and the surrounding area.

This is what Gina had to say about the programme:

Travis Farquharson is a resident from Ealing. With a background in music production, Travis received investment from 02 to develop a community music studio and launch his own work. Since the Dragons Den Travis has purchased equipment, produced new downloads and is working with a mentor.

This is what Travis had to say:

I want to be a real producer and A2Dominion and the Young Foundation is making this happen. I didnt really think it was going to be like this when I signed up and some of it has been challenging but Im now doing it for real. The grant helped me get the equipment I need and Im now an official producer making money!

    Travis Farquharson

Harpreet Gill is an A2dominion resident from east London. Harpreets business idea was to support other disabled young people get a break into the urban music and fashion industry. Citing Dr Dre as his role model, Harpreet has used his investment to work with Joe Ross, CEO of Gold Seal, an urban music social enterprise, to develop his business plan in urban fashion design.

This is what Harpreet had to say:

I was chuffed with the award and the support has been great. Entrepreneurs, however, do need a lot of help to get things moving. Ive changed my direction now in terms of my business and its great to have my mentors supporting me.

  • How we implemented the project:

We launched an internal competition where departments submitted bids for an opportunity to host an apprentice

Managers were then briefed about the nature of the apprenticeships and how the scheme could benefit departments

Four departments selected were: Leasehold, Housing Services, Facilities and Community Involvement

Four business administration apprenticeship vacancies were advertised throughout Ealing

12 applicants were invited to attend a screening/assessment day facilitated by Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College and our Human Resources department

Seven applicants were shortlisted and interviewed by host departments

Three posts were recruited to in June 2012 and the remaining post in October 2012.

The Internal Apprenticeship Scheme, piloted in 2012-13, secured fixed term employment in the area of business administration for four young people living in the borough of Ealing, and an additional two young adults accessed apprenticeships in electrical engineering and plumbing with external partners.

    12Apprenticeships

  • The apprenticeship pilot programme has now been established, our recruitment and personal development processes have been recognised as an example of good practice by external assessors and internal feedback from managers and staff has been overwhelmingly positive.

The apprentices themselves took the lead in producing a video of their experiences at A2Dominion for National Apprenticeship Week, which was promoted on the Intranet and Internet. As a result of the pilot we will be recruiting 10 young people through funding secured from Heathrow Community Fund to pilot our Pathways for Young People, from work experience and work placements leading on to job preparation for guaranteed interviews for apprenticeship opportunities with A2Dominion or our partners.

This is what OSM had to say about the support offered

What david Kamau, Business Administration Apprentice, had to say about his apprenticeship with A2dominion:

This apprenticeship has been very valuable to me in every aspect of my working life. The apprenticeship has helped me to put things into perspective in terms of what I want to do in the future. The last couple of months have given me experiences in different departments and each team has provided me with expert work-based training in what they do and I believe this will help me in the future. Working with different people has given me a better understanding of how A2Dominion works. Attending college has also been helpful in learning and understanding the technical side of work and has been valuable to me.

    david Kamau

david Goodwill, deputy Group Facilities Manager at A2dominion, took on an apprentice in June 2012. This is what david Goodwill had to say about the scheme:

I was approached by Community Involvement to see if I would sponsor an apprentice. I think they felt an apprentice would fit in well in the Facilities department and after all, we had successfully given one of our tenants general work experience through the Internal Work Placement Scheme. I was a member of the panel that interviewed candidates. The process had been thoroughly thought through by HR, Learning and Development and Community Involvement. Applicants had to complete a number of exercises where they had to demonstrate various skills such as planning, communication in a group, presentation skills and literacy and numeracy. Well, six months on Jaspreet has confirmed our confidence in her and she has successfully passed her probation. She has settled in well, learnt new ideas and skills and contributed to a list of projects in the Health and Safety, Procurement and general Facilities sections. I think this process would not have been so successful without the full support of not only the managers but everyone in the department.

In the future, Im hoping Jess (as she is known) will go from strength to strength and even if she doesnt pursue a career in Facilities, the experience she has had will hold her in good stead. Would I employ another apprentice? YES, I certainly would!

  • This is how we set up the programme

A2Dominion staff were actively selected to the scheme and trained as life mentors to engage and offer continued support and encouragement to young people who are accessing different aspects of the Be Inspired programme.

13 staff members completed initial applications and nine were selected to attend the one day workshop. Mentors were introduced to the key concepts of mentoring and registered on the Future You website. 88.9% of the mentors trained rated the Future You course as excellent.

Each mentor has committed up to 14 volunteer hours to the programme and is required to hold regular 1:1 sessions either online, face-to-face or over the phone, providing support and guidance to the young person they have been matched to.

The aim of Life Mentors is to help young people realise their potential and have an opportunity to make a significant and positive difference to the well-being, confidence and life chances of the young person they support.

The sessions delivered between mentor and mentee create a place for the young person to share and discuss personal issues (specialist support can be accessed via Future You online services) and receive support in coming up with practical solutions to difficulties they may be experiencing at the time. The mentor is ultimately aiming to encourage the young person to adopt a positive mind-set in order to move closer toward their personal life goals.

The activities mentors are currently involved in vary enormously, from goal setting to career development. For example, one mentor has supported his mentee in applying for a job on an oil rig the young person has successfully got through to the second stage in the application process. Another mentor has helped his mentee to source wholesalers and silkscreen designers for his merchandising business.

14MentoringA2Dominion and Future You, an award-winning cyber mentoring programme, have come together in the last year to provide a mentoring service aimed at A2Dominion residents between the ages of 14 and 24.

17 young people received introductory mentoring sessions from Winchester, Salisbury and Ealing: eight receiving online support and nine being matched with mentors.

Brandon Gilbert, aged 19, Community Involvement Apprentice shares his experience:

My experience of the mentoring programme has been great! The workshop I attended helped me to discover my future goals and ambitions and I really enjoyed the day.

I also got the chance to meet other young people like myself and learned a lot about mentoring. Being mentored was something that never really appealed to me before, but by the end of the day I couldnt wait to meet my mentor!

My first session went really well. I was slightly nervous at first but my mentor (Shantha) was great and I felt we got along. Already, he has helped me think about my future plans and how I can achieve them. With his help, I have been able to set some personal goals and targets for myself, which has given me a real sense of direction.

Im really grateful to have the support of someone like Shantha and I am looking forward to future sessions!

    Brandon Gilbert

What A2Dominion Life Mentors had to say about the programme...So far being part of the Mentoring Programme has been a positive experience and one that I would highly recommend. After the initial email was sent and I put myself forward, we had our training with the Future You team; they outlined what was expected of us, the boundaries and also how to use their website as a communicative channel between us and the mentee. We then met the group who had been shortlisted for the mentoring programme and took part in some fun team-building exercises. Once the matching stage was complete, my intention was to arrange a light informal meeting with my mentee so we could get to know one another, as we spoke we actually managed to get lots done, mapping out potential career progression ideas and also set some goals for the next session.

I am looking forward to the next session with my mentee and I would like to add that it is not as daunting as people may think; the Be Inspired Team have both been very supportive and encouraging throughout this process which has made it even more enjoyable and rewarding.

These examples highlight how the mentoring programme is proving to be most valuable to the beneficiaries of the wider Be Inspired programme.

  • Based on what young people and partners have told us we have identified 10 key areas that we will focus on next year to improve Be Inspired:

Delivery1. We will target more young people by delivering local Be Inspired workshops in Winchester, Staines, London and Oxford.

Communication2. We will update young people and partners through a monthly newsletter and regularly refresh our Facebook pages and promote the online service so that young people who cant attend specific workshops can still access the mentoring and enterprise support available.

Partnerships3. We will establish our youth volunteer programme to provide more opportunities for volunteering for young people.

    4. We will establish the Be Inspired Youth Champions network.

    5. We will engage new partners who can add value to the Be Inspired offer.

Apprenticeships6. We will establish our pathway of work experience, work placements and job preparation for apprenticeships, through funding from BA.

    7. We will generate more apprenticeship opportunities.

Mentoring8. We will improve our mentoring offer to so that young people can access a pool of trained mentors in a more flexible way and, where possible, match mentees to mentors where they live.

Enterprise9. We will provide more 1:1 support and guidance for enterprises receiving investment and specify a regular contact schedule to maintain momentum and motivation.

Income Generation10. We will generate 65,000 external income to support the project.
