Building a 5-Star Program for Safety

Consumers today are always looking for signs that when they buy something, they’ve gotten ‘the best.’ Whatever the product or service, we all want to know we’re at the top of the product line. For that reason, having a 5-star rating – whether for hotels, restaurants, autos or even movies! – is always valued. Today, being rated with multiple stars is also important to non-profits. Charity Navigator, for instance, has a 4-star rating system. Safe America is working hard to get to a 4-star level... and, is proud that we’re currently rated just under a ‘3.’ As our Board has reflected on our initiatives, we also recognized that, as we’ve grown, we’re now working in five distinct areas:

Disaster readiness

Transportation

Community safety

Technology / Innovations

Global Safety

Having recognized our growth, we opted to redesign our logo, coming up with 5 stars – and, at the same time, creating collateral that points to our having 5 key pillars that we’re committed to. The Executive Committee and Board is pleased to be introducing new collateral this year... and hopes that programs in all five areas can be viewed as truly being 5-star quality, also! To accomplish this, we’re looking to grow our network... using our CEO Network as a means of recruiting 100 executives who can invest a minimum of $5,000 annually in our program. All of us on the Board are proud that with Steve Blue as the incoming Chairman, our CEO Network is poised to expand rapidly. One of the stimulants is increased exposure via his League of Extraordinary CEOs column which is published nationally in American City Business Journals. As we move into the New Year, Martin Swarbrick, Steve and I hope you’ll consider joining our CEO Network... and finding 1 other person who can also be involved. Our motto of ‘being prepared, not scared,’ has never been more accurate. But, so too has our mission statement of addressing the emerging issues in health, safety and technology – and being the voice for safety. Through initiatives in human trafficking, cyber security, veteran transitional support plus youth safety and disaster readiness, we’re poised to address real concerns. Thanks for your support... and helping us make 2016 one of our best years ever. Now, let’s build a C-level network that can influence Presidents and CEOs to view Safe America as an organization valuable to the country, their employees and the communities they serve.

Sincerely

Len Pagano Martin SwarbrickPresident & CEO President & CEOSafe America Foundation Bison Gear & Engineering Corp.

Global Safety

Helping veterans transition to civilian life successfully has been a growing agenda for Safe America. And, thanks to growing partnerships with Primerica, Lockheed Martin, Georgia Power, 11 Alive, KopierNet and United Community Bank, a new ‘news channel’ has been launched online – VETV.US. Board member Harold Cohen (of Dilworth Paxson LLP) introduced Len Pagano to retired Pennsylvania Adjutant General Wesley Craig who, along with former General Steve Hashem, offered their support in providing content that might help veterans in their transition. “Today, there are so many emerging non-profits that a veteran doesn’t know who to rely on for certain types of help,” noted Cohen. “Through our VETV online site, we’re going to aggregate content from a variety of sources – helping veterans be able to rely on a single source for the kind of help they need.” Thanks to a fall news series launched by 11 Alive in Atlanta (WXIA-TV), Safe America has also received greater exposure, with online and broadcast stories on its Home Front program with WellStar Atlanta Medical Center. “We appreciate the growing visibility we’ve received – and will use it to attract new partners,” noted Senior Vice President Ted Waldbart. “Our goal is to add grow funding – through sponsorships and online advertising – giving veterans special prices that save them money while building business for firms helping Safe America expand our services.” Organizations which have also joined in this effort include VETLANTA, an ad hoc entity consisting of major corporations who have joined forces to help veterans. Also supporting Safe America’s efforts are Habitat for Humanity, Emory University, Team RWB, Goodwill Industries, St. Vincent de Paul of Georgia, Catholic Charities, Operation Home Front and the American Red Cross and Community Blueprint. Starting in 2017, Safe America will look to load more video content including original newscasts and interviews designed to help veterans learn the ‘latest’ information from veteran service organizations as well as the Federal and State Governments.

Steve Blue knows how to run a major company exceedingly well. That’s why we were delighted to name him the Chairman of our CEO Safety Network, responsible for reaching out to senior executives from coast-to-coast. Together with other Board leaders, Steve’s focus will be on the C-suite... engaging executives in our five key program areas, as well as taking advantage of training programs we’ll be offering through new partnerships with Rutgers and Columbia University. Maybe you’re not a CEO today. But, anyone can become a ‘Safe America CEO.’ In our lexicon, that acronym stands for Community Enhancement Officer. And, through our CEO Network, you can be the ‘Chief CEO’ in your firm – regardless of your day-to-day job title. Join the CEO Network and gain exposure nationally. To learn more, contact Len Pagano at 770-509-7958.

Kim Ryan, WellStar Senior Vice President and President of WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, has been named the Chair of the WorldSafe Health Initiative for 2017. In this role, Ms. Ryan will focus on emerging health issues as well as the problem of human trafficking. During 2016, Ms Ryan was a key speaker at Safe America’s Summit Meetings at the United Nations in New York as well as on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Safe America CEO Len Pagano noted that Ms Ryan has a passion for saving lives, having been in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “Many people in medicine know what it’s like to deal with life-or-death situations... but Kim Ryan dealt with the severe crisis of New Orleans seeing multiple people face devastation all at the same time,” Pagano noted. “Having Kim lead our ‘fifth segment’ assures us of having someone who has experienced severe a devastating event, coming out of it further committed to protecting life.” Ms. Ryan, who runs the WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, has embraced all of Safe America’s 5 key program areas. She is planning to participate in a series of Summits in 2017, with an initial event being planned for Atlanta in the First Quarter. “I am truly honored to lead the Foundation’s health initiative as well as helping support the growing veterans program and the Brain Camp youth safety initiative,” Ms. Ryan said. “With help from other major firms, I plan on mobilizing a growing task force that will share critical information to the public while offering C-level leaders insights into what they can do to protect their employees as well as the consumers and communities they serve.”

NORFOLK SOUTHERN HONORED FOR SAFETY TRAIN; LOOKS AT WAYS TO IMPROVE FIRST RESPONDER TRAINING IN 2017

Norfolk Southern Railroad received one of the most prestigious WorldSafe Awards this year, for literally ‘tracking’ the future of safety! The Company mobilized its Safety Train, which traveled through 15 cities, help-ing train first responders on how to deal with any form of rail emergency.

The Company also offered a new ‘safety app’ that will speed how fire departments can respond to a derailment or spill that occurs. “We’re looking to help Norfolk Southern engage more first responders in 2017, knowing that when firemen are educat-ed on how to deal with specific types of chemicals and rail cars, they can speed their response, minimizing the poten-tial danger to a community,” said Safe America CEO Len Pagano. “We’re proud of the work Bruno Maestri, Darrell Wil-son and John Irwin have done and look to help build a stronger alliance – not just within the first responder communi-ty but with major rail shippers.” To participate in this rail safety initiative, contact Bob Surrusco at 770-973-SAFE.

A group of Safe America Board members met recently in London to consider a possible ‘cyber education program’ that can help companies and individuals be safer on the Internet. WorldSafe/European Chairman Nelson ‘Skip’ Riddle (Principal of Riddle International) hosted a discussion in early November with WorldSafe Australasia Chairman Harold Wolpert (CEO of Avalias) and Board Member Tom Serio of Verizon. “Our objectives – starting through conversations in 2015 with Core ID Services and UL – is to offer programming that can protect every user of the ‘Internet of Things,’ noted CEO Len Pagano. “Thanks to our history of working with technology firms like Verizon, AT&T, Motorola and Google, we have the basis for building an information campaign that can alert people to emerging threats.” Pagano noted that PwC also helped Safe America shape a training program utilizing a game which simulated how a firm might be hacked – and what could be their best solutions. Introduced in Chicago this summer, PwC’s Phil Swarbrick has already offered to extend the program in other cities. Among the cities being con-sidered is London, New York, Atlanta, Chicago and Silicon Valley/San Francisco. “We also have talked about conducting a ‘Cyber Summit,’ bringing together leaders from North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America – and will work on this as part of our 2017 objectives,” noted Skip Riddle. “We hope to start the process in Chicago and will invite our CEO Network to help host the program – making senior executives part of the discussion.” Individuals or companies interested at being involved can contact Len Pagano at (770) 509-7958.

A BETTER FUTURE

Atlanta is fortunate to have many business leaders who not only care about making a profit but also about providing resources to guarantee a better future. And, of the many we recognize, one stands out in the automotive arena: Jimmy Ellis. Thanks to his caring efforts, homelessness is being mitigated... with donations from the Ellis Family helping address this issue.

That’s not the only area where Jimmy Ellis has made a difference. We’re proud that through our jointefforts, Atlanta teenagers have had a chance to learn how to drive safely... through programmingthat offers computer simulator training for free.

Safe America salutes Jimmy Ellis for caring to make a difference across the entire Metro Atlanta area. Year-after-year, the Ellis Foundation has generously focused on needs that need attention. It’s because of this that we have chosen Jimmy Ellis for our 2016-17 WorldSafe Award forCommunity Leadership. Congratulations, Jim; you’re driving a better future for all Atlantans.
