KWEEN ALABIOMAHA CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL GPA 4.0Her greatest accomplishment is learning how to live her life not defined by cancer. Kween is a person with very high energy and a thirst for life and passionate in everything she does. She has been wheelchair bound since she was 10, when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer of her nervous system. At times she feels she is ignored or belittled because people see the wheelchair first and suddenly have low expectations of her. Kween

has a medical diagnosis of an intramedullary spinal cord tumor. She has already persevered, despite multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. She is passionate and invested in her learning. Kween excels in academics, behavior and the community. Her passion for learning has shaped her ability to be an advocate for herself and others. She works as an Associate at Tilly’s and volunteers with The Girl Up Organization, The German Shepherd Rescue’s Giftwrapping service, and the Ruth Sokol Christmas Party for the Visually impaired. She is a hard worker and challenges herself in all of her classes. Kween’s intelligence and tenacity will undoubtedly lead her to a path of success in college. She has not selected a college but her focus in college will be on Speech Pathology.

SAMUEL BRYM BROWNELL TALBOT GPA 3.47Competing in the Junior World Athletics Paralympic Championships held in Switzerland was his greatest accomplishment. Sam was 1 of 20 representing the U.S., placing in all of his events. He broke the U20 U.S. record in the long jump, bringing home the USA Junior Paralympic Bronze medal winner. Sam has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and is hard of hearing with some limited mobility. Physical activity and walking are tiring for him and hearing in a large group is stressful. Doing everyday things like tying shoes can take time and be challenging. Sam is a member of the National Honor Society and helps with the family business in the summer. He is looking forward to receiving a quality education that sets him up for success. His physical challenges have led Sam to focus on his mental capabilities. His college education will help Sam to get a quality job that doesn’t require physical labor. He participates in Track and Basketball, attends the Attorney General Youth Conference, and is friendly and kind to all. Sam values the community within his church and has participated in mission trips and service projects. He is still deciding between UNL or UNO for college with an undecided vocation.

MALCOLM DURFEE O’BRIENOMAHA CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL GPA 4.2Malcolm’s greatest accomplishment was his ability to become a good student (as a new kid on the block) by gaining self-confidence and managed to get his work done on time, all in a short time frame. Malcolm is a member of the National Honor Society, a volunteer for Ann Ashford for Congress, a volunteer for Joe DiCostanzo for Douglas County Board of Commissions and President of the Central Student Democrats. Malcolm’s disability is Autism which causes him to miss certain social cues. Without realizing it, he can dominate a conversation. He is involved with the school newspaper and the Philosophy Club. He is a very strong writer, communicates well with professionals and has an adult knowledge of current events. He is also a very skilled public speaker. As Editor in Chief of The Register for three years, he has never shied away from a tough story. His passion is public service and because of that, his goal is to serve people in either government service, political service, or by becoming an attorney. Malcolm’s dream is to be an elected official in order to fully deliver the treatment people deserve from their government and political leaders. Malcolm’s College choice is still undetermined but he plans to work in Public Service with a focus on Social Sciences.

ISAAC GRELKPAPILLION LA VISTA HIGH SCHOOL GPA 3.88Hard work and studying paid off for Isaac because his greatest accomplishment was scoring 31 on his ACT test. Isaac’s disability is Stargardt’s Disease, a degenerative retina disease which causes blindness. Being blind makes it difficult to read and fit in but that has not stopped him. Isaac is a leader in his Boy Scout troop and on track to make Eagle Scout before summer. He is also a teen core senior leader for his youth group. He is also a varsity athlete in cross

country, swim team and track. Being able to continue his education and obtain a degree needed to become a physical therapist is his current goal. Isaac’s plan is to expand his knowledge of human health and the body. He is a respectful, responsible, and kind student. Isaac is an outstanding self-advocate. He does not allow any of the challenges he faces prevent him from achieving his goals. His first goal is to receive an undergraduate degree in kinesiology and then to pursue a doctorate of Physical Therapy. He will attend the University of Nebraska at Omaha focusing on Physical Therapy.

Rotary International is a world-wide service organization of 1.2 million members, in more than 35,500 clubs in more than 200 countries and territories around the globe. There are eleven Rotary clubs in the Omaha Metropolitan area with over 800 like-minded women and men who try to make a difference in the lives of other people in our local community and the world. The Rotary Foundation is the fundraising arm of Rotary International and is funded by contributions from its members. We work around the globe with organizations like The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The World Health Organization, UNICEF, The CDC, USAID and other to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, promote mother’s and children’s health initiatives, support education and grow local economies.

The Omaha Suburban Rotary Club is the largest of the metro Omaha clubs at about 200 members. In addition to supporting this scholarship program, we promote and participate in an adopt-a-school program, and international youth exchange program, a high school Rotary program called Interact at a metro high school, and youth recognition programs. On an international level we support Rotary International’s Polio Eradication efforts, a school for girls in Afghanistan, a hospital in Togo, and founded and assist in the support of a school for deaf children in Leon, Nicaragua.
