NORTHERN WINTER REGIONALS 24-27th February 2009

The Northern Winter Regionals were very successful this year with many more entries, as this becomes a more established date in the calendar (only the 3rd year that the North has had it’s own Winter Regionals)

The Leak family and team of helpers/supporters/writers did a great job and I received lots of positive comments. Read on to hear how 2 riders enjoyed the Winter Regionals.

TO JUDGE AND BE JUDGED (ANDREA SMITH)

I set off at some ungodly hour on the Tuesday morning heading for Willerby Hill Farm, Nr Hull (the venue for the Northern Regional Championships.) I had everything but the kitchen sink on board, including my home bred mare, who I was competing after I’d judged on the first day.

As I was driving, I reflected on riding at my first regional,9 years ago. I remembered how nervous I was and how desperate I was to do well and make it to the National Championships. Back then I treated it like a life or death situation as though my life depended on getting to those Championships!

Now I take a much more realistic and measured approach, Experience teaches you that it’s more a measure of where you are at with your training and whilst it’s great to do well, there can only be one winner of each class But it’s a great achievement just to qualify! Standards of training and quality of horses have continuously improved over the last few years.

The Prelim class was a lovely class to judge, albeit a bit of a marathon at nearly 6 hours long! My writer and I needed great concentration and stamina to give last few riders the same standard of judging as the first! There were some promising partnerships looking to have a bright future in dressage.

After a rather underpowered performance on the first day Matilda (my mare) and I pulled our socks up in the Freestyles,on Wednesday. I had support in the working in from Hannah and Robert Esberger and they really inspired me to try and raise our game. This resulted in a couple of placings which I was pleased about (as my mare can be rather hot in a busy atmosphere.) I almost kept a lid on her except the tendency ,to jog in the walks!

All in all I think a good time was had by all and the show ran efficiently throughout, with a very friendly Northern atmosphere that we Northerners are famous for providing!

The best thing about the Regionals is- There’s always another one next year so make sure you put in your diary!

THE REGIONAL ROOKIE (HELEN TOWNSEND)

Its two years since I bought my horse Zilano, a rising three stallion, who, when I went to view him loose in the arena, was so busy we were watching all his moves, turned his neck 180 degrees towards us, and promptly fell over!! It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship full of the highs and lows of bringing on a baby, clearing collecting rings, whilst snorting and piaffing, standing on his back legs before his first young horse qualifier at a luminous Petplan sign (he then went on to win the class), fun rides were he cantered on the spot and galloped for two hours, I could go on, plus some schooling horrors, why go long and low, Mam can’t you see my head carriage is elementary? What do you mean you don’t want power trotting and cantering in my tests, you want control, how rude!! It took eighteen months of hard work to break, back and school him on, so when we qualified for the regionals I was really excited. Our final two preliminary classes at Richmond went well he won one, and came second in the following class, so we were as ready as we were ever going to be to compete.

Originally I had planned to go to Myerscough Winter Regionals, but having an outdoor arena that was frozen for two weeks prior to the event meant that I needed the extra time to get in some valuable schooling sessions. Prelim 19 was broken down and I ran through sections of it in different orders, as once Zilano has done a full test, he remembers it and will anticipate what’s coming next. As well as horse preparations, I had to fill out entry forms, stabling forms, a biography form for horse and rider (how much artistic licence was one allowed to use I wondered), and then AA routefinder to ensure we arrived there safe and sound. As for rider preparations this was the perfect excuse for new white breeches, and gloves, and my friend Jayne loaned me the blingiest browband going, but I thought blinding the judges might have its advantages! Then there was my technical support, video recorder, camera and Sat Nav. Had we hit a weighbridge my Honda CRV would surely have been close to its maximum.

With sufficient ‘equi-gear’ to survive for two months not two days we drove without incident to Willerby. The weather was great, and the team at Willerby helped us to settle in. The facilities were excellent, lovely spacious stables, and a relaxed atmosphere meant that I felt confident about leaving Zilano overnight. Zilano loved having new friends to intimidate behind the safety of iron grills. After much posturing he bored even himself, so I led him out in hand to introduce him to his new surroundings, and with his bed down, happily munching on haylage and feed, it was time for his Mam to bring the Holiday Inn to a standstill as we checked in with a saddle (doesn’t everyone!)

My test was not until early afternoon so after checking on Zilano it was good to watch a few tests, and see how the horses were reacting to the arena, and three judges cars. I lunged Zilano for twenty minutes in the hope of losing some excess energy, and felt my job was done as he stretched long and low, but the second I led him back to his stables and he encountered another horse he was on springs again piaffing for a 10, I only hope he keeps this skill for if, and when I eventually get to a level where its required!

My warm up was challenging, Zilano felt quite fresh and strong, but not spooky, however it took a good hour to work him in. I heard the commentator announce us but what she said was a blur, the arena looked massive and I felt quite tense. The test started well, but then Zilano jogged for one step in the walk – very expensive, he then settled until the first canter when he spooked very dramatically at the judges car at E, even more expensive, he then had some lovely moments but didn’t stretch sufficiently down on the final 20 metre circle. I don’t think I was breathing until he spooked, but all in all I was pleased with his performance, as there was only one other 4 year old in the class. A score of 60.61 reflected the best and worst bits of the test, but Zilano got some great comments including ‘Super Horse’ and ‘Fabulous Horse’ but the errors were costly, as they should be.

After finishing the test there was time for some shopping at Cool Equestrian, who had some fabulous discounted clothing, and to order ‘the world’s most expensive wallpaper - two wonderful photographs from Kevin Sparrow’ – that was my husband’s comment not mine! There was also a goody bag full of treats and tasters, and then back to reality a stable to muck out.

I hope to be back in the summer if Mr.Z and I keep on improving!!

SENIORS There has been loads of activity with Senior training recently. Many thanks to Sarah Huntridge for all her hard work with this, as there has really been an increased demand on her at the moment!

The next Senior Training newsletter will be out very soon – explaining about the NRTDP (Northern Region Training Development Programme) and team competitions (where you can ride for your region / country if selected.) Remember training is open to all BD members and non members.

Our main focus is currently running Test Riding raining days and Senior Camps. Some feedback so far is:

Test riding quotes

‘I went to the test riding day yesterday, with Jane Peberdy at Witham Villa. It was great! I am still on a high as my horse went so well under Jane's instruction. Jane and her writer were very friendly and encouraging. Many thanks for organising.’ Lydia Hayes

‘Training was very useful, will definitely go again!’ Alison Clarke

‘As promised, I'm writing to let you know how Pavi and I got on at our first ever BD training clinic! When I peeped out of the curtains at 0630hrs, the rain was lashing down, so I got myself prepared with lots of waterproofs and spare clothes! By the time we arrived at Witham Villa, the rain had stopped and the sun had come out! We were greeted by a lovely lady called Sara, who explained the format of the training and said she'd give me a call 4 minutes before I was due to go in to ride my test - P19 - so off we went to warm up - thankfully indoors! Right on time, at 11.30, we went into the arena and introduced ourselves to Jane, who'd just finished the previous lesson. Jane went back into the Judge's box, rang the bell and I rode my test - Pavi behaved well and I remembered the test - so far, so good!! Jane then came into the arena, gave me the test score sheet and discussed various aspects of our test, in particular, she'd noted that our circles weren't quite round and that Pavi was tending to 'fall-in' on them. The same thing was happening in our corners. Jane then got me to ride Pavi on a small rectangle, concentrating on keeping him straight at all times so that he was better balanced, especially into the corners. She also got me to think about and address how much pressure I was applying to each rein - and I realised that it was me that was causing him to fall-in by not keeping this pressure completely even. With a bit of practice, I was able to keep Pavi much straighter and Jane then got me to go back to riding 20m circles - all the time keeping him straight. This worked like magic and everything felt much smoother! Another thing that has stuck in my mind, which made a big difference to my riding, was that Jane told me to ride as if I was trying to balance a small ball on each shoulder - which made me sit up more and look ahead. Pavi and I now have lots more to think about and practise, thanks to Jane. She was very encouraging and really seemed to like Pavi too!Who wouldn't ... he's sooo cute!] ‘ Kindest regards Elaine Medley & Tuscani Pavaroti :-)

Focus on a Northern rider with Rebecca Stephens

(Novice Restricted Winner at the Northern Winter Regionals 2009)

How and when did you start riding? Ever since I can remember I wanted to ride, but I come from a VERY non horsey family (I thought I must have been adopted). I read any book I could find about horses. Eventually my parents relented and said that if I saved my pocket money and bought a hat I could ride when I was 16. So I did.

The first time I got on a horse I was shown the basics then everyone shot off down the beach! I loved it.

What have been your high points so far? That’s hard to say. Fantastic things keep happening to Diddy and me. Each time I think things can’t get better, but it does! Getting to the Nationals was so exciting. I know it’s a cliché but it really is true. I am living my dream.

And low points? Like every rider I have had accidents which stop you riding. Assorted broken fingers, toes and hand. I broke my back at 18 when working in a Trekking Centre. That was pretty awful. Luckily I lost my memory so had no problems getting back on again after a decent interval!

A few years ago I had to sell a horse. I had been ill, was working full-time, my daughter was going to University and there was no way I could give ‘Fred’ the time he deserved. I had had him since he was 3. We had brought him up! He had so much potential that was going to waste. A lovely lady bought him and was devoted to him. Even took him to France with her when she retired. I will never forget the feeling that I was betraying him as I led him onto the Horse transporter.

What do you like most about riding/horses? The more I learn when riding, the more I realise I need to learn. When you watch the top riders you just know what riding the movements must feel like. It’s so exciting. You just know when you’ve got it right. It feels like you know it should. I love the rapport, the relationship you build with your horse. I love the way they are all so different and expect different things from you. I love the way my boy learns and the more we do the more talent he shows. He’s very exciting.

And dislike? Dark, cold, winter mornings with frozen hosepipes, frozen fingers, wellies and wheelbarrows stuck in deep mud while sensible people are tucked up in bed.

Name your favourite horses to date…..and why?

Well I am a parent so I love all my horses (and Dusty Donkey of course) equally but in different ways!

If you mean famous horses, then I would have to go back to my watching from the sideline days when I watched every second of anything horsy on television. I loved ‘Ryan’s Son’. He was such a character.

If you could ride any horse which one would it be?

You look at all the top horses and think what it would be like to ride them. Yes it would be incredible to get on and ride tricks, but I am not that good a rider. I have so much to learn and I want to do it right.

To me the real joy I get from riding is to work together with my horse, build a relationship of trust and understanding. I am supremely lucky in having a young, extremely talented horse (my size!) and I just love every minute we share together. I just want to keep up with him and see how far we can go!

Which rider do you most admire?

Kate Elliot. I have known Kate since she was a little girl and have watched her grow into an empathic, sympathetic rider with incredible style who gets the best out of any horse she rides.

Who would you most like to have a lesson with?

Ian Woodhead has been a good friend for nearly 20 years. He has helped my daughter and me with all horsy adventures! And there have been many! Good and bad. But Ian has always been there. Even sorting me out when my car spontaneously combusted many years ago!

He found Diddy in Germany and realised that this overgrown pony was just right for me. Even though he was concerned that taking on a 3year old might be too much for me at my age! He is so cheeky!

Ian gets up at a ridiculous time once a week to get to Grimsby to teach Diddy and me at 6.30am so that I can get to work on time. What more could I ask for!

What are your future plans with horses?

Diddy is showing so much potential I want to see how far we can go! I do so want to wear top hat and tails!

Finally – share a funny moment........something that made you laugh…

This made everyone else laugh at the time, and I find it funny now too!

Many years ago my old mare ‘Becky’ was going through yet another ‘awkward’ phase. (She was so difficult Ian begged me never to breed from her!)

She was determined not to jump and I was determined that she WAS going to jump. The bell went and I rode her purposefully at the first jump which she cleared. No problem. Except I was so caught up with making sure we cleared it I’d jumped it back to front! Typical.

Suit confident and cheerful person. No experience necessary, but common sense a must. Based Hudds/Wakefield area so must have transport,to get to yard or meet me at shows.
