The all-new Ford Focus brings home top prize to round out

an award-winning 2011.The Ford Focus and Ford Ranger have come

out big winners for 2011. The Ranger won the AMI Insurance and NZ Autocar Overall Car of the Year award, the fi rst time a ute has ever won this award. Also announced just last week, the all-new Ford Focus was judged New Zea-land’s Car of the Year by the country’s leading motoring writers and commentators.

Voted for by more than two dozen established motoring journalists – each of whom is a member of the Motoring Writers’ Guild (MWG) – the New Zealand Car of the Year award is the country’s most compre-hensive, as well as the most respected, award by the car industry itself, being the embodiment of the opinions of experts representing every auto-motive medium.

These two awards are in addition to trophies awarded across the Ford range in 2011 – from Fiesta winning Company Vehicle’s Compact Busi-ness Car of the Year to the new Territory winning 4WD Magazine’s SUV of the Year.

“Focus winning the Guild award tops off what has been a fantastic year for Ford,” says Ford New Zealand managing director Neale Hill.

“It’s certainly a sign that our One Ford plan is working. Perceptions about Ford continue to strengthen, thanks to our ongoing intro-duction of new vehicles that are leading in quality, fuel effi ciency, safety, smart design and value.”

Ford New Zealand’s trophy cabinet for 2011 now includes:

AMI Insurance NZ Autocar - Compact Car of the Year 2011 – Ford Focus AMI Insurance NZ Autocar - SUV of the Year 2011 – Ford Ranger

Having won accolades around the world in 2010 and 2011, including

the AA Motoring Excellence Awards’ Small Crossover Vehicle of the Year, the Yeti is making its presence well

and truly felt in this country. You don’t have to be a motoring

fanatic to notice how strongly the Skoda brand shares the best features of its parent company’s stable mate – Volkswagen.

In fact, if you were blindfolded and placed behind the wheel of the Skoda Yeti, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in the cabin of a VW Golf when the blindfold was removed. There is that same sense of solid build and fi t through-out the spacious interior. This is emphasised more by the feel of the comfortable, well-balanced, leather clad steering wheel beneath your hands. Even the initials DSG embossed on the shift lever indicate that the vehicle you are in shares the VW Golf ’s superb Direct Shift Gearbox transmission.

But it isn’t only the rock solid components, like the six speed DSG gearbox, that make you sit up and take notice. The Yeti also shares that sense of superior build quality that has helped push the Golf up the sales charts here in recent years.

Unique designFrom the outside, the Yeti has an honest,

purposeful appearance to it. One can see there is no sacrifi cing of interior rear head space by attempting to swoop the rear pillars lower, and with the rear wheels placed well back, there is a defi nite fi rm ‘road sticking’ stance about this unique machine.

Up front, the fog lights also help give the Yeti its distinct ‘stand out from the usual’ appearance and help stamp the SUV as something memorable in the crowded and competitive market it inhabits.

That upright profi le through the rear that we mentioned pays off once you settle in the cabin. The Yeti has exceptional head room for taller passengers – something not always achieved in this market – and it does not sacrifi ce any boot space for the sake of suppos-edly more aerodynamic appearances.

The load space would also challenge many

hatchbacks for capacity and there is, of course, the potential to almost triple the space. One or more of the rear seats can be folded down, tumbled up or even removed entirely to make the Yeti an extremely spacious commercial proposition for a small business owner.

Add in the multiple storage spaces that exist under the front passenger seat, in the door pockets and within the chilled glove box, and the Yeti’s interior comforts become far more defi nitive than its elusive namesake.

Super smooth performanceIf initial impressions are that you might be

inside a VW Golf and not a Skoda before you get into motion, that impression is only

strengthened once out on the road. The Yeti shares the Golf ’s impeccable road man-ners, nicely soaking up bumps and proving extremely capable of holding its own when overtaking. Steering is direct and equal to the power, with no sense of wallow or loss of poise through any of the ‘twisty bits’.

Drop the DSG transmission into ‘S’ mode

and the rev range becomes more ‘peaky’, with upshifts holding further up the range before occurring. The ‘S’ mode adds a great fun element to the Yeti, providing an extra power burst through the super smooth diesel.

The transmission’s ‘mechanicals’ make a pretty noticeable impression too. They com-prise of twin clutches that each look after half the gears. Without delivering a lecture in auto mechanics, it simply means the gears are able to shift and engage quicker than a conven-tional manual gearbox, with the ability to still shift manually if you prefer.

The four-wheel-drive system works with most, 90 per cent, of the power going through the front most of the time, with the ability to

direct as much as 85 per cent through the rear as conditions require. The small front and rear overhangs and a generous 180mm of space between the tyres and the wheel arches suggest the Yeti could be worth a punt on some more gentle off road terrain, but this is unlikely for most buyers would probably not be interested in straying too far from the tarmac.

Extras includedThe Yeti comes stacked with features that

are often sold as extras on some competitors models. For example, there are heated side mirrors, a powerful eight speaker stereo, dual-zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors and rain-sensing wipers.

The sense of quality throughout the Yeti’s cabin, combined with its strongly built chas-sis, is reinforced by its 5 Star NCAP safety rating. With the full arsenal of active and pas-sive safety boxes ticked, including full front, side and curtain airbags, ISOFIX child seat hooks (front and rear), stability control and hill hold control, there is no doubt this SUV will keep everyone well protected.

Versatility is certainly right up there on the list of reasons why you might consider owning this award-winning SUV. It could fi t the bill for just about any purpose. Even if it does remain more urban than off-road, those smart enough to look harder at the Yeti will fi nd that there is no myth to the stories that have been told about it. It represents incredible value, quality and a load of quirky style for the money.

The Skoda Yeti may be a little more ‘quirky’ than some, but it delivers incredible value and quality.

Left: The upright rear profi le allows for plenty of load space and passenger head room.

Right: There is a sense of quality throughout the

cabin and safety features are at premium levels.
