The BMW Group has achieved its best ever August sales result on the back of impressive sales of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles.

The group sold a total of 121,615 automo-biles worldwide during the month, boosting the total number sold in 2012 to 1,157,777 worldwide – an increase of 7.9 per cent when compared to the fi rst eight months of the previous year.

Company spokesperson Ian Robertson says the company’s improvement in sales

fi gures goes right across the board. “We achieved record sales once again in

August. Models such as the BMW 1 and BMW 3 Series, the BMW X1 and X3, as well as the BMW 6 Series reported strong gains and made a positive contribution to our record sales performance last month.

“We expect further gains in the coming months and we are absolutely on track to achieve a new sales record in 2012.

“We will continue to aim for a healthy balance in sales between Europe, Asia and the Americas, in both mature and emerging markets.”

European ride on Tauranga roadsBMW agent Mount Motorcycles Ltd is looking forward to showcasing the latest BMW machines as part of its

second Motorrad Demo Day on September 29.

The event was a huge hit last year, when Tauranga riders made the most of the chance to test ride the dynamic new BMW model of their choice and to find out all the technical details and purchase options from the friendly team at Mount Motorcycles.

BMW New Zealand and Mount Motorcy-cles have combined to present a wide range of their latest models for demonstration, including the K1300R, K1600GT, R1200R, R1200RT, R1200GS, R1200GS Adven-ture, F800R, the G650GS Sertao and the F800GS. All bikes are available for test rides and there will be specials on the day.

The event will run from 10am to 3pm next Saturday, September 29 at Mount Motorcy-cles, 23 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui. It will be postponed to October 6 in the event of rain. There will be free refreshments available too, as well as a free sausage sizzle. All demo rides are for half hour time slots on previously mapped-out routes and need to be booked in advance. Customers must be sure to bring their full motorcycle licence.

“We are really looking forward to being able to have these fantastic bikes here for local people to try,” says Mount Motorcycles co-owner Carolyn Holmes.

“Interest is high and we have had plenty of calls already from people keen to reserve a demo ride on their favourite bike.”

Mount Motorcycles was started by Bill Holmes in Te Puke in 1971 and moved to the Mount soon after. Now owned and oper-ated by Bill’s son, Ray and his wife Carolyn, they’ve been selling and servicing BMW motorcycles since 1977.

This gives them an in-depth knowledge of the BMW product and allows them to provide the kind of service that keeps their customers coming back year in and year out.

Ray is a qualified motorcycle techni-cian and has history as a competitive motorcycle racer, including riding for New Zealand. With his father heavily involved in the bike racing scene, Ray

can proudly say that he attended his first racing event when he was only two weeks old.

Ray and Carolyn are supported in the business by technicians Owen, Darryl and their nephew, Rhys Holmes.

MercedesM-class 250 BlueTEC SUV

The name Mercedes-Benz has been synonymous with quality and

innovation since Karl Benz fashioned the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagon, which is widely regarded as being the

world’s fi rst automobile.For this reason, and because the brand

has since built remarkably upon that envi-able reputation, I was more than eager on a Friday afternoon to pick up the new Mercedes-Benz from Bay of Plenty dealer-ship Ingham Sears.

I’m handed the keys to the stylish, futuristic M-class 250 BlueTEC SUV, and from the fi rst glance it’s obvious this new offering ticks all the right boxes in terms of a luxurious and powerfully practical vehicle.

Refi ned performanceThe SUV’s power and stability is imme-

diately evident while heading along State Highway 2, as it hits 100km/h without barely troubling the rev-counter.

By the time I reach the intersection with State Highway 29 near Baypark, it’s

evident this third generation SUV has built on the formidable beginnings of its forebears.

The 2.1 litre diesel motor may be smaller than its predecessors, but it is still powerful with direct injection and a two-stage turbo.

A lighter, yet larger body enables the SUV to carry more of a greater load, adding to its convenience and adaptability.

The wider front and rear track make the ML 250 BlueTEC easier to handle, aided by low rolling resistance tyres which help it glide around corners with ease.

If I was game enough I would have taken it to Ruapehu, where I could imagine the off-road package option featuring a diff lock, and 285mm ground clearance would be more than helpful for those hitting rough terrain.

That – and there is nothing like easing into adjustable heated seats at the end of a hard day on the slopes.

Shorn of the ability to go that far, I made do with the sliding sunroof, which allows the perfect Mount Maunganui day to fl ood the stylish confi nes of my very impressive new ride.

With plenty of room in the back for the skis and boards, plus a more spacious cab, this SUV is a perfect option for a family

vacation or road trip, and the automatic push button boot closure makes it ideal for people who always fi nd they have their hands full.

EconomicalNot only does the M-class cater for all road

use, it is also economical in the face of record high petrol and diesel prices.

Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG with responsibility for Group Development and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, says the key to the M-Class has always been a case of combining the comfort and luxury of a saloon car with the off-road characteristics and the emotiveness of an SUV.

That goal has most certainly been reached, with the fact that the new M-Class is as fuel effi cient as the economical saloon cars displaying the Mercedes star makes the all-wheel drive model even more desirable.

The 2.1 litre diesel motor now uses 30 per cent less fuel than its previous model, with a combined fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

Along with the seven speed transmis-sion, the key feature attributing to its fuel

economy is the optional start-stop option, which switches the engine off each time a driver comes to rest at traffi c lights or an intersection.

As well as the interior blue LED lights, the ML 250 BlueTEC boasts the BlueEF-FICIENCY system to help save fuel while reducing compression for lower emissions.

Making driving easyPracticality comes standard with a brand

of this quality, as does the luxurious style instantly recognisable all over the world.

A full leather interior and night time illumination of the dashboard and high reso-lution colour screen set this SUV apart.

Bluetooth and iPod connectivity is simple, so listening to the music on my iPhone through the voice activated control system is a breeze.

Continuing along the highway, the sun set behind the hills and daytime cruising turned into night time driving, as the SUV put its considerable range of features to work.

An intelligent light system improved visibil-ity in dark conditions, while cornering lights helped to detect upcoming obstacles on the road. This, coupled with automatic high beams that switch on when no other road users are sensed, made driving on country roads at night a dream.

Appeal of the M-ClassMore than 1.2million units have been sold,

making it the best-selling SUV in its class with a loyal customer base.

The designers have created a more solid and masculine exterior, while maintaining the Mercedes-Benz M-Class sporting style.

Young motocross riders get a chance to follow in the tyre tracks of legendary Tauranga rider Ben

Townley this weekend.

The former MX2 world champion, who got the motocross bug as a youngster grow-ing up in Taupo, will be giving a lot of his old trophies to young riders at Maddix Park on Sunday September 23.

Maddix operator Shelley Dean is excited about the BT Trophy Day they are putting on at the Ohauiti park, saying it is a great way to encourage young riders.

The trophies awaiting new winners were won by Ben, who now lives in Tauranga, on his way up through the mini and junior

ranks to become a world champion. They have been inscribed with the motivating message “Keep racing! This is where I started too!”

There are 75 trophies, which will be given away to the first five place-getters in 15 races in the mini and junior classes, while all other riders will get a certificate signed by Ben.

Shelley describes it as a ‘blue moon’ event, coinciding with September’s two full moons, because it is rare to have a chance to win a trophy that has belonged to a world cham-pion.

“We hope that these trophies will serve as an inspiration and encouragement to those seeking motocross sporting excellence.”

Only two weeks on since shifting to the heart of the CBD, Tauranga

used car specialists Car Connexxion’s team is happy with the response.

The Cameron Rd yard - on the former Cranston Cars site beside the Tauranga fi re station – can comfortably accommodate 80 cars, up on the 65 maximum they could squeeze into the dealership’s old lot between 5th and 6th Ave.

Dealer Jono Allen says they are on track to achieve the same sales as last month, with a “seamless” transition between the sites.

“Given that there has been no drop-off and we have noticed we are getting quite a

few more walk-ins, I think it is a sign the location will be good for us.”

Jono, along with owner Brent Anderson and dealer Ryan Easton, believes the move will be great for the business’ profi le – and help it build on its position as a leader in the Bay of Plenty used car market. He says the high volume of cars they move enable them to get sharper pricing on any work done on cars, translating to better prices for buyers.

“We have a good client base up in Auck-land because they know Tauranga has a reputation for offering great value.”

Jono says the yard’s dominance in the local used car market was shown in the July sales fi gures – the latest statistics out. He says

out of the 200 used imports sold in the Bay of Plenty region in July, a quarter of those were from Car Connexxion.

Prior to setting up on the new site at 207 Cameron Rd, opposite Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, the former Cranston Cars workshop was demolished to

provide more space – creating a yard that is a lot bigger than at fi rst glance.

Along with the 80 cars they display on the lot, he says they have another 70-odd in transit which they can talk to customers about.

“The last yard we had was great. For the past four or fi ve years

it was brilliant, but it was time to move on. It’s

great being where we now are near four other dealerships.”

Bay of Plenty MG enthusiast Neville Lucas has been in the driving seat organis-ing celebrations which will see 90 MGs from around the north converge on Wood-lands historic homestead in Gordonton, Waikato.

“It is going to be a great event,” says Neville.

“We’ve got 170 people coming from Auckland down to Taupo and the Bay of Plenty, and we’re getting them to line up in age around the cricket oval – so it’s taken a bit of organisation.

“This has got phenomenal support – when we are organising our regular monthly runs we normally only get about 20 cars. Everyone seems to be excited about taking part.”

Neville has had a passion for the sporty British cars since getting his first MGB in 1975. After owning series of the classic cars over the years he turned his love into an occupation eight years ago when he bought parts distributor and restorers the MG Shop.

For Neville, who grew up in a family of Wolsley drivers, buying an MG was the natural step for someone who appreciated the leather and walnut interiors of the Wolsleys but was looking for something with more youthful, sporty flair.

“At that stage I had another car – so my wife drove it during the week, and then we used it in the weekend.

“We had a number of MGs in the early days, then as family came along they were replaced with station-wagons.”

With family growing up by the late 90s, Neville and wife Delwyn returned to the fold, replacing the wagon with an MG.

Compared to most people who earn their living selling cars, Keith

Henderson is a little different. Cars are important to him – as a means of

transport, but they are not a passion.“I grew up with cars, but it wasn’t a great

interest or passion,” recalls Keith, the dealer-principal for Bay City Mitsubishi.

From the age of 14 Keith had a part-time job grooming cars at a friend’s father’s dealer-ship, helping him save up for his fi rst car – a 1959 Holden FC which he paid $600 for in 1969.

“In those days you didn’t have much of a choice. I only had it for about six months and can remember it already had a few problems.”

The inside rear mudguard was rusted out, the boot was kept open by a big stick and the car blew clouds of blue smoke whenever you went round sweeping corners.

He remembers going on road trips in the two-tone green and cream FC with his mates when he was 18 or 19, with everyone “laugh-ing our heads off ” when the car belched smoke, but has long since lost any photos or mementoes of the car.

After 13 years working in the police Keith left for a new challenge, taking up a job in a Christchurch dealership before shifting to Tauranga for a job with Toyota.

A long-held desire to have a business prompted him to take over Bay City Mit-subishi and he has since also bought Rotorua Mitsubishi.

Ask Keith what type of car he likes to drive and he laughs: “I drive whatever happens to be available on the yard, I’m not fussed.”

Prompted by a “fi t of nostalgia” fi ve years ago Keith snapped up a 1973 Mitsubishi Galant Colt GTO GS 2000 on the market. His mechanics refurbished and restored it to its original condi-tion, working on it whenever they were quiet. Three months ago it was fi nished and displayed at the yard.

“It was one of those icon cars back in the ‘70s so I thought it would be great to have it returned to original. Most of them have been raced, rallied or rolled – they were a popular choice for hotting up so there are very few left.”
