Stay Warm Save Money

Winter is upon us. The days are growing shorter, nights are cooler and it‘s getting darker

earlier. Like many things these days the cost of energy is rising. Staying warm on a budget

during the cooler months takes creativity and commitment. With a little effort, you can mini-

mize your heating bills.

If you haven‘t heard yet, there is a new state wide

program by the Tasmanian Government to help reduce

energy costs for people on low incomes including home

owners and private rental tenants.

The Housewarming program offers:

an energy assessment

a range of low cost installations to improve energy

use

education

and personalised power and water savings plans.

The aim of this program is to assist eligible households

to reduce their residential energy usage while keeping

their homes warm in winter by making homes more

energy

efficient,

and supporting them to make cost-saving

changes in how they use energy. With this

program you will have a warmer and more

comfortable home as well as savings on power

and water bills. You will also reduce

greenhouse emissions.

In addition, through the Tasmanian

Government and Sustainable Living Tasmania,

a booklet is available with tips on keeping

your home warm and saving money on your

power bills. This booklet is available at the

Bucaan Community House and is FREE to

anyone who would like a copy. Drop in and

pick up your copy today.

Program or the Stay Warm Save Money

Winter is the time for planting garlic, onions, peas & snow peas,

mustard greens, silverbeet, endive, chicory, brussels sprouts, kale

and rocket. In addition, Cos Lettuce can be planted this time of year

and will fair better than a loose leave lettuce.

* Tip when planting rocket—although rocket is a hardy

plant and can grow quite rapidly, it can become quite

bitter if under watered. Keeping it moist makes for a

happy hardy plant.
