Landscape photography is a genre intended to show different spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic.

Many landscape photographers show little or no human activity in their photos, striving to attain pure, unsullied landscapes that are devoid of human influence, using instead subjects such as strongly defined landforms, weather, and ambient light. Landscape has become a very broad term, encompassing urban, industrial, macro and nature photography.

Waterfalls and mountains are especially popular in classic landscape photography, often calling for Large Format cameras and neutral density or polarizing filters. Most places and things can be photographed as a landscape, a kitchen, a lamp, a wall, or even the human body can be turned into a rolling vista by a skilled photographer.

Landscapes are often created with such tools as a pinhole camera, or a large format camera and tripod, usually with a wide angle lens. Many serious photographers use medium or large format systems to record as much detail as possible, although the vast majority of landscapes published today are from digital SLR’s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landscape_photography 21/02/10

In previous lessons we learnt about:

• Large Format

• Medium Format

• Pinhole

• 35 mm

Part of this assignment requires you to research different formats as used by landscape photographers. It is up to you to expand on these and learn more about them as part of your individual research.

Look for Look for ContrastsContrastsWhen shooting in Urban and industrial landscapes, one of the things that is great about cities is the diversity that you can find there – both in terms of the people as well as visual diversity in the sites you’ll see there. Look for and capture the contrasts between organic and inorganic forms, colours, geometry and light.

PeoplePeople• Even if you choose to exclude

people, they almost always still live in the shots by the imprints that they leave there.

• All variations of landscapes don’t always include people directly but speak about the way we live (both good and bad). It can be very powerful to look for the evidence of people in a landscape and to feature this in your shots.

• This adds layers of interest and make your photos more dynamic.
