1. Short biographical note

Born in Ghent, Belgium, Dr Bruno Charles De Cooman studied Metallurgy at Ghent University. He did graduate

studies in the United States, earning his MS in Solid State Science and Technology at Syracuse University,

Syracuse NY, and an additional MS in Materials Science and Applied Physics at Cornell University, Ithaca NY.

In 1987, he obtained his PhD in Materials Science and Applied Physics at Cornell University.

He has worked in materials R&D as group leader for Phillips (Natuurkundig Laboratorium, Eindhoven, The

Netherlands), as coated products section coordinator for het OnderzoeksCentrum voor Aanwending van Staal

(OCAS, Zelzate, Belgium), and as a tenured professor at both Ghent University (Laboratory for Iron and

Steelmaking, Ghent, Belgium) and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH, Pohang, South

Korea). In 1990, Dr De Cooman was recruited by ARBED to organize the creation of the OnderzoeksCentrum

voor Aanwending van Staal (OCAS, Zelzate, Belgium), which is now part of ARCELOR-MITTAL Global

Research. Dr De Cooman started his academic career in ferrous metallurgy research as director of the Laboratory

for Iron and Steelmaking at Ghent University in Belgium after 10 years in industrial materials research and

research management in the electronics and materials industry. In 2005 Dr De Cooman was recruited by

POSTECH, the premier Science and Technology University in South Korea, to organize the creation of the

Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology of the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH,

Pohang, South Korea). Dr De Cooman is currently director of the Material Design Laboratory of the Graduate

Institute of Ferrous Technology in Pohang, South Korea.

His current research interests include the physics of ferrous alloys, materials micro-analysis, iron and steelmaking,

and the physical metallurgy of steel products. He is the author and co-author of more than 500 publications and

conference presentations in the field of materials research and steel technology.

In the Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT) he leads the Materials Design Laboratory (MDL) and is

responsible for leading scientific research and technology developments in the field of advanced automotive steel,

GO/NGO electrical steel, and stainless steel. The Materials Design Laboratory combines processing research

expertise in the areas of iron and steelmaking, casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, continuous annealing and

galvanizing with an in-depth analysis of materials performance. The focus of the Materials Design Laboratory is

research and development in the area of advanced steel concepts with a clear mid-term industry application

potential. His current research project portfolio covers the following subject areas:

1. Press hardening steel (PHS): alternatives to aluminized 22MnB5.

2. Press hardening steels: liquid metal embrittlement of Zn-coated PHS.

3. High Mn TWIP steels for demanding automotive applications.

4. Medium Mn steels: 6%Mn Ultra-fined grained TRIP and 8-10%Mn TWIP+TRIP steel grades.

5. Continuous Galvanizing: influence of selective oxidation on surface quality.

6. High added value products for thin slab direct rolling production lines.

7. Steels for large engineering structures operating in extreme conditions: artic and deepsea production

platforms and linepipes, LNG tankers, and boilers.
