Paul Townsend ‘Put it where it belongs!’ I am quite sure the parents among us will know this phrase well! Jesus says the same here – give what belongs, to where it belongs. In the Gospel Jesus is being baited or trapped. He is asked about the use of taxes & politics, but Jesus moves this conversation on a stage and asks us a much higher question - where do we belong? Belonging can sound heavy – as if we are being controlled (i.e. taxes & politics) We say, our money belongs to us so can’t we do what we like with it? For Jesus however, it’s to do with the higher sense belonging which is the showing of love & gratitude to our Creator by sharing with those in need what we have generously been given in life - that’s our priority. It may feel like many things are not in our control; life, love, creation, death, but this reminds us that we are not the masters of our lives, we are simply stewards of what God has given us. We come from God and we go to God. Isn’t this sense of belonging the centre and meaning of our lives? God doesn’t want to control us but to be in a relation of love, that is why He gifted us with free will. And there is the snag! Belonging to God (Who is Love) means belonging to each other. We have rights and duties of love. Give to others what belongs to others; give to the poor what belongs to the poor. Our work to alleviate hunger, and provide education etc is not a charity for people; it is justice. Everyone has a right to the food of the earth and the food of the mind. It’s not charity (as such) when people are given these things; food, education, a home, freedom of religion, freedom of speech - is this not justice, when we have the ability to give these things? To give to God what belongs to God is actually to share the goods of the earth. Pope Francis said that “Hypocrisy is so bad for the Church.” Could there be people in the Church today who, because of their ideology, refuse to change to a “What would Jesus do?” kind of thinking regarding today’s realities? He concluded by exhorting the faithful to remember that the only way to respond to flattery is with truth; the only way to respond to ideology is with reality.
