Ideally 450x350x1050mm bales baled by MF 130 baling machine. Density
= 120kg/m3. MC < 16% dry basis, 18% wet basis
Bottom of the first row of bales at each floor level is lifted above the
floor at least 30mm by draining baseplate
External protection (trees – natural wind breaks) wherever possible.
Extremely exposed walls are always timber clad. Less exposed walls are
limeplastered with Beeck external paint finish.
Fixation of bales
Bales
Stuffing all the gaps with loose straw + vertical and horizontal
compression of loadbearing system
1.1 How are your bales secured in the wall?
Loadbearing walls = compression + hazel stubs in baseplate and wallplate +
roofplate pinned by hazel pins
3.1 How do you deal with potential of rain bouncing from the ground
surface and ground humidity?
Bottom of the first row of bales is lifted above the ground at least
350mm.3.2 How do you deal with possibility of water intrusion from building’s
interior at each floor level?
3.4 How do you protect your wall during it’s construction from
weather?
4.1 What are your criteria of bale quality (shape, density, moisture
content…)? Give the borderline values.
Window frame includes timber corner protections “ears” to each side of
the sill and double window sill has drip edge.
3.3 How do you protect straw in your walls against wind driven rain?
Bales without gaps
Moisture
2.1 How do you ensure tightness of the strawbale wall insulation
(stuffing gaps between bales with loose straw for example)?
Amazonails system allows for wallrizing under finished roof (see appendix
B). Horizontal rain is sheltered by scaffolding wrapped in tarps, which is
built along the whole perimeter of the building.3.5 How do you prevend water leakage at the window sill detail?

Hessian overlapping the joint at least 300mm over to each side
5.3 In case of unsing Boards, etc. What is important for you?
Airtightness
Wall coating with plaster or boards
First layer of lime plaster/render is pushed into straw by hand.
5.2 How do you ensure that your plaster/render (if included in your
wall’s assembly) doesn’t crack over connection of two different
supporting materials (for example timber-straw connection)?
5.1 How do you ensure bond of the plaster/render (if included in your
wall’s assembly) with the straw?
6.1 What do you do to secure airtightness of the walls? Wall to ceiling,
opening or ground floor. Is there a blowerdoor test?
Timber is notched into strawbales
Fire resistance
7.1 How do you protect the walls from fire, while building and after? Do
you refer to official approvals?
25mm thick lime plaster on the inside + 25mm thick lime render on the
outside
