BBC Sea Monster

A programme aired on BBC 1 on 7th

January documented the amazingdiscovery of a new species ofichthyosaur, a very rare event. Narratedby Sir David Attenborough, the storyof this ‘Jurassic sea monster' followedthrough from the initial find of anunusual fossil flipper to the recovery ofmuch more of the fossil skeleton fromshale and limestone rock.

The fieldwork involved carefullydigging away tons of soil in order toexpose underlying strata in an unstablecliff near Lyme Regis, on the south

coast of England. The fossil wasremoved in a number of sections, eachof them so heavy that it was necessaryto use a long pontoon raft to bring themto a point where they could betransported to facilities for furtherpreparatory work and study.

After months of careful chiselling awayof the very hard rock matrix, theskeleton was fully revealed as about4.5 metres long. Some sophisticatedscience then uncovered furtherfascinating information about the fossil. The head of the fossil was not found;possibly it had been bitten off whilst itwas alive, as evidence was discovered

of damage to the flippers and some ofthe ribs, probably by a massive bite.

The investigation then switched topinpointing what animal could haveinflicted such a wound. Judging by thegape, a likely candidate wasTemnodontosaurus. This ichthyosaurwas much larger, up to around 12metres long, and had a very powerfulbite. Its jaw has been estimated to havea bite-strength of about 30,000newtons, i.e., about twice the strengthof the largest present-day crocodile. Itwas already known from stomachremains in other fossils thatichthyosaurs were cannibalistic.

Another interesting discovery was thatthe fossil recovered from the cliff hadfossilised remains of skin present.Examination of samples under anelectron microscope revealed that thecreature was probably counter-shaded –dark above and pale underneath –much the same as the colour pattern ofpresent-day sharks. Such counter-shading is thought to have helped makethese creatures less visible from belowand to have given greater protectionfrom UV light from above.

Unfortunately this otherwise fineprogramme was marred by a dogmaticadherence to evolutionarypresuppositions. For example, thequestion was studiously avoided as tohow creatures as large as 12m longcould be fossilised whole or almostwhole. Surely if such an animal diedand sank to the sea bottom it would beeaten by scavengers and its bones

would be scattered around. And ifsedimentation occurred slowly, supposedly over millions of years, thenits remains would have decayed anddisintegrated long before they werefully covered in sediment. No, theoccurrence of such fossils indicatesthey must have been buried bysediment quickly. Hence thesedimentary layers do not representmillions of years, but rather a muchshorter time period.

Indeed, fossils are known of at leasttwo ichthyosaurs that were in theprocess of giving birth when they werefossilised (see image on page 1).Giving birth most definitely does nottake millions of years! So if theichythosaurs were buried whilst thiswas taking place, then the burial musthave occurred catastrophically quickly. What kind of catastrophe could burysuch a large creature so fast? Theobvious candidate is Noah’s Flood, butof this the programme was completelysilent.

Because of these facts, the notion thatthe so-called Jurassic Coast is about200 million years old is laughable. Thissupposed age is based on evolutionaryassumptions that are unverifiable –nobody was around to observe whenthe layers were first formed – and fly inthe face of the evidence of the fossilsmentioned above. They also dependupon assumptions of uniformitarianismwhich are likewise unproven and are atodds with such obvious evidence ofpast catastrophe.

Furthermore, the existence of fossilisedremains of skin makes the age of thespecimen questionable. Couldsomething as fragile and liable torotting as skin really remain for a longperiod after death? Yet fossilized skinis now known from a wide range ofprehistoric creatures. All of thissuggests that fossils are much, muchyounger than evolutionists would haveus believe – or rather, Evolution ismake-believe.

ShipwrecksAn article on the BBC News website(goo.gl/U15jyB) for 06 Octoberreported on a scientific project by theUniversity of Nottingham to produce ahighly detailed 3D map of a shipwreck. The wreck is of the SS Thistlegorm, which was sunk by a bomber in 1941and lies on the bed of the Red Sea offthe coast of Egypt. The map has beenproduced because the wreck hasbecome one of the most famous divesites in the world, due to the clear waterand the military equipment still onboard.

The article quotes Dr Henderson fromthe university's School ofArchaeology: “The thing aboutunderwater sites and the importance ofunderwater cultural heritage is that theonly people who've ever seen it aredivers. However, we are now at a pointwhere we have the technology toreconstruct these sites.” This raisessome interesting points to ponder:

Firstly, it is evident that even though awreck may have been colonised bymany underwater organisms (as in theaccompanying figure) we cannevertheless recognise that it isn't justa part of the seabed. We have theability to recognise design. We canperceive when an object has featuresthat indicate it must have had a designer.

Secondly, there have of course beenmany shipwrecks in diverse placesover the centuries. If we compare onewith another, we may recognise anumber of features that they have incommon. But this doesn't mean thatone shipwreck was derived fromanother. Rather, it means that theyshare some of the same designprinciples.

So it is with living organisms. Anyonewith an open mind can see that themany amazing features of theseorganisms speak of design. And thefact that these creatures have somefeatures in common doesn't mean thatone evolved from the other. What itshows is the re-use of good designprinciples by one amazing Designer.A diver exploring a shipwreck - clearly a designed

As a scientific theory, Darwin's Theoryof Evolution is just plain shipwrecked.

Pterosaur eggsIn November 2017 an article on theBBC News website (goo.gl/rfb6oy)reported on the discovery of a largenumber of fossilised eggs of apterosaur called Hamipterustianshanensis. More than 200 eggs ofthis flying reptile were found at anunspecified site in China. These werefar too many eggs to have been laid byone individual, suggesting that thespecies nested in colonies.

Furthermore, an almost completeskeleton of a hatchling showed thatbones related to flight were lessdeveloped than bones of the hind limb, indicating that newborns might havebeen able to walk but not to fly. Thisimplies that some parental help wasneeded for the hatchlings, reinforcingthe idea of communal nesting formutual support and defence frompredators.

The article went on to note that “largenumbers of the flying reptiles died in astorm in the Early Cretaceous period”,supposedly about 120 million yearsago. This is an oblique reference to theoriginal discovery of Hamipterus in2005 in north-western China. Denseconcentrations were found of pterosaurbones, associated with soft tissues andeggs. The site was thought to representa nesting colony that storm floods hadcovered with mud. Dozens ofindividuals were secured from a totalthat in 2014 was estimated to run intothe many hundreds.

What kind of catastrophic event, onewonders, could have led to such a largenumber of deaths of adults and of theburial in sediment of large numbers ofeggs and hatchlings? A devastatingglobal flood, perhaps?

Noah’s Ark looseTalking of storms, an intriguing newsitem on Premier's website(goo.gl/yVKGf8) reported that areplica of Noah's Ark caused chaos at aport early in January after it broke freeduring Storm Eleanor. Gusts of windexceeding 110 km/hour were recordedin parts of the Netherlands at this time.

The replica, scaled-down but stillmassive at about 70 metres long x 10metres wide, struck yachts and otherboats when it came free from itsmooring at Urk.

A rich diversity of pterosaurs are known from thefossil record, such as this artist’s depiction of aPteranodon species. Image in the public domain.

It is interesting to note that at no timewas the ark reported to be in anydanger of sinking. When the replicawas originally constructed, its ownerfollowed closely the proportionsdescribed in the Bible (Gen. 6: 14-16).Clearly God knows very well indeedhow to design a vessel capable ofriding out any storm-flood. Even aglobal one.

Google chess triumphGoogle gained headlines recently forits ‘AlphaZero’ artificial intelligenceprogramme. The algorithm triumphedat chess against world-leadingspecialist software within hours ofteaching itself the game from scratch.According to an article on the BBCNews website (goo.gl/J4ZLcV) it wasable to outperform another leadingprogramme, ‘Stockfish’, in just fourhours after being given the rules ofchess and told to learn by playingsimulations against itself.

It's interesting to note that theprogramme was able to teach itself. It

was only able to doso because ofparameters designedinto it by an outsideintelligent agency –human beings –along with the lawsof chess thatundergird how it canoperate. In similarfashion, we can learn

the biblical parameters that help us tolive successfully and recognise thescientific laws that undergird thematerial universe. This should tell ussomething about how we came intobeing: we have a Designer.

Darwin is bustUniversity College London is a well-known academic institution and astaunch supporter of the theory ofEvolution. It's no great surprisetherefore to find that Darwin iscelebrated in a bust on display near oneof its main entrances. But what issurprising – and amusing – is UCL'sapparent failure to recognise theimplications of its own words. Thecaption to the bust says:

"A plaster bust of Charles Darwin wasrelocated from this window when theGrant Museum of Zoology moved overthe road.Institute of Making members werechallenged to create a new Darwin inany form or medium using data from a3D laser scan of the original bust. This

full sized resin version was milledusing the massive robot arm "La Toyah"at B>Made, the CADCAM lab at theBartlett."

So UCL tacitly admits that the input ofintelligent design was necessary tocreate a resin bust of Darwin. Yet abust is far less complex than the living, breathing, original Darwin himself. How much more likely it is, then, thatDarwin was also intelligently designed- and by Someone far wiser than a groupof university academics.

Furthermore, it's interesting to note thatthe wording of the caption on thewindow is already beginning to wearaway, making it harder to read. Thisdemonstrates the Law of Entropy inaction – that ongoing time leads to aloss of information, not a gain. Hence

a time period of many millions of yearsdoes not support the gradualdevelopment of increasingly complexlife-forms.

UCL is to be congratulated forinadvertently providing such a usefulillustration of the logical necessity ofintelligent design and the preposterousnature of Darwin's theory.

Babylonian mathsEvolutionists would have us believethat mankind evolved from apes andhence societies millennia ago were farmore primitive than ‘advanced’modern man. But is this viewpointcorrect? No, not at all.

The very complexity of ancientlanguages should immediately give onepause for thought. And even morepersuasive is a recent article(http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.hm.2017.08.001) in the journal HistoriaMathematica that casts light on ahitherto mysterious Babylonian tablet.

Known to historians by the beguilingname of Plimpton 322, it seems thisbaked clay tablet is actually atrigonometry table. And not just anyold table: it is powerful and exact ratio-based sexagesimal trigonometry. Assuch, the authors describe it as “one ofthe most sophisticated scientificartifacts of the ancient world”. They goon to note that “The Old Babylonianscribes used a richer sexagesimal (base

60) system which is more suitable forexact computation than our decimalsystem, and while they were not shy ofapproximation they had a preferencefor exact calculation… If thisinterpretation [of the tablet] is correct, then Plimpton 322 replaces Hipparchus''table of chords' as the world's oldesttrigonometric table – but it isadditionally unique because of its exactnature, which would make it theworld's only completely accuratetrigonometric table.”

All this from a society of simplefarmers not long risen above the mentalcapacity of apes? Hardly!

Wasted eyesDarwin admitted that the ideasomething as complex as the eye couldhave been formed by natural selectionseemed ‘absurd in the highest possibledegree’. He attempted to explain suchcomplexity as the culmination of ‘along series of small heritablevariations’, but this is just a somewhat

desperate example of wishful thinking. One can only wonder what Just Sostories he would have invented toaccount for the many remarkablediscoveries about the eye's subtletiesthat have been made since then.

One recent discovery has been theastonishing finding that waste fromcells in one part of the eye becomesfood for cells in another part. An articlein Science Mag online(goo.gl/19ZP82) reports on studiesof the biochemical workings of theretina by a research team at theUniversity of Washington in Seattle.

The team found that retinal pigmentepithelium (RPE) cells obtain glucosefrom their blood supply but then, instead of using it, pass it on to theeye’s rod and cone cells. The latterconsume the glucose, convert leftoversinto lactate, and then feed that back tothe RPE. The RPE’s mitochondriathen burn the lactate to meet the RPE’sown energy needs. If the RPE doesn’treceive lactate then it can switch toconsuming glucose instead, but in suchcircumstances the rod and cone cellswould starve and die.

The article quotes an ophthalmologistat The Scripps Research Institute:

“There is a growing consensus that nocell exists on its own in complextissues like the retina”. It is clear thatthe RPE/rod+cone system works – andworks well – only because theirdelicate interplay is so precisely

balanced. How, then, could it possiblyhave evolved gradually, over millionsof years, without the rod and cone cellsdying in the meantime? The system issuch a clear example of design by anamazing Designer that only those whoare wilfully blind refuse to see it.

Reason to HopeIt was fascinating to read in the newsrecently that Reason to Hope, the thirdGlobal Atheist Convention scheduledfor Melbourne in February 2018, hasbeen cancelled due to lack of interest(goo.gl/aSpras). Could this be becausein the absence of God there is no reasonto hope for anything?

As the writer of the article goes on tosay, “when we don't have a story to tellthe next generation about the meaningand purpose of human life – a ‘reasonto hope’ – then we are only a hair'sbreadth away from barbarism”.

The good news is that ‘God so lovedthe world that He gave His onlybegotten Son, that whosoever believesin Him should not perish but haveeternal life’ (John 3: 16).

Cuttings & Commentsfrom New Scientistby Dr David Rosevear

7 October p.8 – CRISPR from headto toe

CRISPR is a powerful techniquedeveloped 5 years ago for cutting outand inserting bits of DNA. Up to nowit has involved removing a cell fromthe body, changing the DNA andreinserting the mended cell.

“Editing cells inside the body withoutremoving them could be used to treatabsolutely everything.”

“Results from animal studiestargeting the liver, muscles andbrain suggest CRISPR genomeediting could revolutionise medicine, allowing us to treat or even cure ahuge range of disorders.”

“The challenge is delivering theCRISPR machinery to tissues insidethe body. This needs twocomponents, a protein that cuts DNAand a piece of RNA that guides it tothe precise DNA site to make the cut.”The field is advancing very rapidly, sowe may be on the verge of a major leapforward in treating disorders.Note that all this involves precision andinformation.Who says the DNA is mainly junk?

14 October p.7 – Fires may havegiven our evolution a kick-startIn the absence of repeatable, observable ape-to-man evolution, researchers must rely heavily on theirimagination, much like the Just Sostories of Kipling. Here is a goodexample.

“A nearby exploding star 8 millionyears ago may have triggered morefrequent lightning on Earth.Wildfires ignited by that lightningcould help explain the spread of east

Page 9: BBC Sea Monster - Creation Science Movement | CSM€¦ · The wreck is of the SS Thistlegorm, which was sunk by a bomber in 1941 and lies on the bed of the Red Sea off the coast of

African savannahs – which manyresearchers think provided a vitalbackdrop for the early evolution ofhominins.”However, no one has been able to finda link between cosmic ray activity andlightning frequency. Nor is it clear howthe presence of grasses, even C4grasses, can aid the complex changesthat could evolve a man from an ape.Evidence of an explosion in space isprovided by “deep-sea sediments ofthat age” that contain a lot of iron-60,which is made, they say, in massivestars. The age of sediments dependsupon how rapidly they were laid down.Laboratory and field observations, aswell as buried-alive fossils, indicatethat layers were laid down quickly.History only goes back some 6millennia.

“It’s one of those nice stories that allfits together, with the caveat thatthere’s uncertainty.”

14 October p.18 – Albatross teachesdrones new tricks

“Many large soaring birds like thealbatross have wings that are whiteunderneath and black on top.Previous explanations focussed oncamouflage.

“Abdelkefi’s team [in New Mexico]discovered that a wing’s black uppersurface absorbs sunlight veryefficiently, causing it to be around10oC warmer than the lower surface. That effectively lowers air pressureon the upper surface, lowering dragand generating extra lift”

The Just So story here is that the birdsmake costly melanin pigment to darkenfeathers. In the next sentence they saythat these findings will help themdesign more efficient drones. Here we have evidence for design byan intelligent Creator.

21 October p.14 – Blind cavefish’sstrange evolution

“Over the past few million years, blind forms of Astyanax mexicanushave evolved in caves. Maintainingthe ability to see uses lots of energy,so the loss of eyes is a big advantagefor animals living in the dark.”Of course, this loss of sight isdegeneration rather than improvement. The genes for eye development in thecavefish show no signs of disablingchanges.

“Instead, the genes have beenswitched off by the addition ofmethyl groups onto the DNA – anepigenetic change.” The eye genes arestill there in this reversible process.Calling this epigenetic switch

evolution gives the impression thatDarwin was right.

28 October p.5 – Tooth controversyTwo 9.7-million-year old teeth fromGermany were claimed to be fromhominins – human ancestors.

“But anthropologists say one toothcame from a ‘pliopithecoid’ earlyprimate, and the other from a hoofed,cud-chewing mammal.

“Sadly, this discovery isn’t at all whatit claims to be. It has nothingwhatsoever to do with humanevolution.”The tooth will out.

4 November p.28 – Before thebeginning

“Some 4 billion years ago, somewherein the mass of inert minerals andmolecules that made up our wet, rocky planet, dead became alive. This was the most importantchemical transformation ever tohappen on Earth.”We ‘know’ it happened because we‘know’ that the early Earth started as acloud of hot, inert gas, and today wehave living things.

“Buried within every cell of everyorganism on the planet… is a living, working version of the earliest life onEarth – a time machine that allowsus to peel away those 4 billion yearsof history and work out how it allbegan.

“The new approach starts withmodern life and works backwards.Formed of a tangle of proteins and arelative of DNA called RNA,

ribosomes are molecular machinesfound inside every living cell. Theydo just one thing and do it well: theyread the genetic code contained inDNA and use it to construct proteins.”The fact that all living cells haveribosomes suggests they date back towhen life began. Fine so far.But a team of biochemists havecompared the ribosomes of a numberof life forms and, by assuming anevolutionary sequence, come up withwhat they claim is the first, simplestribosome. It wasn’t living, butapparently it could join up moleculesand add them to its own structure toform “a mess of co-evolving RNAand protein fragments”. Then

“chemical evolution winnowedthrough the randomness andselected the components that clungmost to one another”. The proteinsthus made then had to learn how to fold

In origami, precise folding is required to obtain thedesired final shape: the input of intelligent design isessential. Protein shapes are far more complex thana flat sheet of paper. To suppose their precise foldingcould have arisen by blind chance is nonsensical.Image courtesy of M. Silva, RGB Stock.

into a usable shape with the help ofother proteins that had already learnthow to fold. “As these molecules co-evolved, they would have selectedprotein fragments that werepredisposed to fold well.”One has to wonder where the proteinsto make this early ribosome came from, and how it reproduced itself withoutthe genetic code. Complex molecules, far from self-assembling, naturallybreak down. Ribosomes are an integralpart of many other components thatmake up a cell, each part beingdependent on the whole. They neededto be created together.

11 November p.16 Dino extinction letus come out in the dayA widely held belief is that before thedemise of the dinosaurs some 66 myago, only small mammals existed. They skulked about at night, fearful ofbeing trodden on by huge plant-eatingdinos or becoming a snack forcarnivorous ones. Once the largereptiles became extinct, big beastsevolved, including man.In order to confirm this Just So story, scientists here make some assumptions;Firstly, some mammals today havelarge eye sockets and a reflective layerbehind the retina that makes them ableto hunt at night. Their ancestors onDarwin’s imaginary tree of life wouldtherefore probably be nocturnal, though eyes don’t usually survivefossilisation.Secondly, it is assumed that theposition of the fossil mammals in the

Earth’s sedimentary layers is a measureof how long ago they evolved. The conclusion was drawn that diurnalmammals - those who hunt by day likeour alleged simian ancestors – evolved65.8 my ago, 200,000 years after thedeath of the dinosaurs. This unscientific confirmation followsinevitably from the startingassumptions. The biblical history, on the other hand, says that all creatures great and smallwere created by Elohim in the space ofone week only thousands of years ago.Genesis also tells us that God judgedthe Earth with a worldwide flood.Creatures were buried alive in wetsediment during the year of the flood. Those whose habitat was the sea floorwould finish up in the lowest levels, followed by other sea creatures, thenland dwellers, then birds with theirhollow bones. The only assumptionwith this scenario is that God’s Word istrue. Bill Cooper’s Authenticity seriesof books published by CSM is verypersuasive.

18 November p.10 – Porpoise aimsits sonar by twisting physics laws

This fish was evidently midway through eating asmaller fish when it was suddenly buried andfossilised entire. This indicates that sedimentarylayers may be laid down rapidly and hence the manymillions of years required by Evolution simply do notexist. Image courtesy of J. Cooper, Pixabay.

Like dolphins and bats, porpoisesproduce clicks and receive backreflected echoes from theirsurroundings to hunt their prey. The porpoise can focus the emittedbeam of clicks to follow the fishwithout moving its head, by using itsfacial muscles to contort the melon, alarge fatty organ in the front of the head.

“Porpoises have the combination ofacoustic controls built into theirheads to thank for their ability tofocus a directed beam of sonar onprey. The bone, air and tissues oftheir skulls behave like ametamaterial, a material designed todefy the normal laws of physics. These sea mammals can convert non-directional sound waves into anarrow laser of sound.”They can also at will broaden the soundbeam to keep a fleeing fish in view.

“How they focus the beam issomething of a mystery, particularlyas the structures that produce thesound – called phonic lips – aresmaller than the wavelength of theclicks they produce. This shouldresult in the wavelength beingspread out instead oftargeted…Each of these parts of aporpoise’s head reflects, refracts andscatters sound in different ways, andsound travels through each of themat different speeds.”All this found using CT scans. This research may find application inthe design of transducers.Sonar was invented during WWI tolocate submarines. One of the foundersof EPM (now CSM) Captain Bernard

Acworth DSO was a leading scientist inthis work. The system didn’t inventitself. Neither did the porpoise evolveit using its facial muscles! Clearly thismammal was designed with a purpose.

18 November p.40 – Delusional you“We live in an age of mass delusion

and very few of us are immune.“First we need to be clear about what

a delusion is. ‘There’s a loose way oftalking about delusions – like whenwe talk about the ‘God delusion’ –which simply means any belief that’slikely to be false and is held despitelack of evidence, or even in spite ofthe evidence,’ says Lisa Bortolotti ofthe University of Birmingham, UK.”Generally delusional beliefs areirrational but not widely shared. (Thisrules out most religious beliefs, conspiracy theory and climate changedenial.) People can have anunwarranted sense that they are beingpersecuted. The antidote is to gatherevidence and consider differentexplanations of data.Surely the most outlandish delusion isthat there is no Creator; that everythingarrived by chance over billions of years.II Thess. 2 speaks of those whom Satanhas deceived, who do not love the truththat leads to salvation. And for thiscause God shall send them a strongdelusion, that they should believe a lie.The lie, I believe, is Evolution Theory.CSM has been exposing the lie since1932 - 86 years- and our Genesis Expois reaching tens of thousands of touristseach year. organisations to reach these deludedsouls.

2 December p.7 – Big-beaked birdsThe journal Nature Ecology &Evolution reports that though evolutionusually moves at a snail’s pace, NorthAmerican birds called snail kites haveevolved larger beaks in less than adecade. They managed this in order toeat invasive island apple snails that aremuch larger than the snails they used toeat.Darwin used a similar argument forevolution with his Galapagos finches.Much like humans, some kites havesmall beaks and some have big ones. This is because some express genes forsmall and others for large beaks. Withthe invasion of large snails, the birdswith beaks capable of coping withthem survived and passed on theirgenes for large beaks to their fledglings.

If the food supply reverted to smallsnails, the remnant with little beakswould multiply. It doesn’t take eons oftime. The gene pool remains the same.Variation within a kind is not evolution.

2 December p.35 – Modern families,A family affairThe article argues that monogamy is arelatively modern development andhardly a sure path to happiness. “Is ittime to explore the alternatives?Throughout our early history, polygyny, or one male with severalfemales, was routine”The Lord Jesus pointed out that at thebeginning He had made them male andfemale and told them to cleave to oneanother as one flesh.Abram’s problems began when Saraipersuaded him to mate with Hagar, hermaid. Isaac loved Rebecca only, buttheir son Jacob had children by his 2wives as well as their maids, which ledto discord. In our own country we now havealternatives to marriage, and thegovernment is thinking of introducingheterosexual civil partnerships withoutthe commitment to lifelong devotionthat provides stability for the children –marriagelite.

universe that is not only constantlyexpanding, but whose expansion iscontinually accelerating, at themercies of the mysterious agentcalled dark energy. No one knowswhat this dark energy might be,beyond the fact that it must make uptwo thirds of everything there is.”But this ‘fact’ is the outcome of atheory (the big bang) that cannot beverified and that has to incorporatefudge factors like dark energy and darkmatter in order to agree with observeddata. Einstein’s cosmological constantis anything but constant.

“The consequences for the ultimatefate of the universe are dramatic. Goforward in time far enough and theaccelerating acceleration overtakesthe forces holding matter together atevery scale. Ultimately, each of theuniverse’s constituent particles willbe torn apart in a scenario known asthe big rip.”Scripture tells us in several passagesthat at Creation, God stretched out theheavens. One can compare this tostretching out a rubber band and thenletting it go free. It returns to itsoriginal state, very rapidly at first butslowing down as equilibrium isapproached. This could be theexplanation for the data that shows adecreasing speed of light whose rate ofdecrease is slowing down as itapproaches a constant speed (seepamphlets 256 and 262).Far from a big rip, God’s Wordpromises that this old world will befolded up like a garment, to be replacedwith new heavens and a new Earth.

23/30 December p.41 – Review 2017:Humans are how old?

“For decades anthropologists havebelieved that Homo sapiens evolved200,000 years ago. But H. sapiens-like skulls from Jebel Irhoud inMorocco have now been dated tobetween 250,000 and 350,000 yearsago. The find rewrites our history.”The fact that there is a 40% error bar inthis result should alert us to its lack ofaccuracy. In fact, all such dates arebased on assumptions, whatever themethod used. The overridingassumption is that the layers of Earth’ssediments represent the passage of time.History tells us of a worldwide floodsome 4,500 years ago. The fossils wereall laid down in the year of the flood, apart from some more recent onesformed by local catastrophic events. The evolution of man from an ape-likecreature is a genetic impossibility.

23/30 December p.67 – Ear WitnessThe ‘winter holiday’ edition alwayscontains a number of interesting andamusing articles. This one concernsearwax in humans, whales and sheep.

“More formally, the glop in your earsis called cerumen, and it is made upof the secretions of the ceruminousglands – specialised sweat glands –and sebaceous glands in the outerear canal. Most of these are waxycompounds, which clean the earcanal and protect it from drying out,as well as killing bacteria and

trapping foreign bodies like dust andfungal spores. Mixed into that waxare bodily cast-offs like shed skinand hair, alongside potentantimicrobials and other chemicals.”This wax could have forensic use, sinceit contains information such as DNA,drug and tobacco use and is diagnosticof both types of diabetes. Earwax typesvary with ethnicity. It can alsodiagnose pregnancy and lactation inewes.Clearly, earwax is a designer product.

Quotes“Thankfully most atheists are notmonsters like Stalin. Many are wellbehaved citizens in good standing, some quite charming and eventhoughtful. At the same time, in myexperience with atheists, I’veencountered more than once aninexplicable, incongruent and visceralhatred for the very God they imaginedoes not exist.

“The apostle Paul long ago explainedhow this could be. Regardless ofwhatever they may tell themselves andothers, the truth of God’s existence ‘isplain to them’ because ‘his invisible

attributes, namely, his eternal powerand divine nature, have been clearlyperceived, ever since the creation of theworld, in the things that have beenmade. So they are without excuse’(Romans 1:19-20).”M. Barber, April 2016, goo.gl/sWJtMx

“Atheism is a religion. It makes claimsabout origins and the nature of ourexistence. It also has followers thatrange from casual to zealots. It's aworldview that when used as a basis forreasoning affects every other thing inthe life of an atheistic believer. It'sanother pagan religion in a long line ofpagan religions. The difference is thatin atheism, the human is the supremebeing. Very dangerous.”Author unknown, 2017
