Race for the Line - Terms and Conditions

Race Car Kits, BBC Micro:bits and Building Rocket Cars

Speed Testing• Each Team can test fire the Rocket Car using an air pump which is available for purchase through the

online HUB shop.• Each team must race their cars using the firing of a rocket motor supplied by the HUB in a sponsored

kit or contained in purchased Kits (one time use). Races must use supplied race tracks, timing gatesand launchers, available for use for free at Race HUBs on open race days, or by appointment throughthe army accredited rocketeer network (via the Race HUB) or can be purchased from the shop.

1. ELIGIBILITY. This competition is open to students in years 3-11 in any Primary and Secondary Schools locatedin England and Wales (each a “School”). Employees of Microsoft, BLOODHOUND or The Learning Partnership orits affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising or promotion agencies are not eligible to be a part of any Team (as definedbelow) entered by a School, nor are members of these employees’ families (defined as parents, children, siblings,spouse and life partners).

2. ENTRY.

Team formation and registration

• Each School may form as many school teams as it likes (each a “Team”) and enter those Teamsinto the competition provided that:(i) each Team consists of no more than 4 students from the relevant School;(ii) no student shall be a member of more than one Team; and(iii) pupils who are members of a Team entered into the competition must be sponsored by theSchool at which they attend.

• Each School must first register with its local race hub found on the map atwww.racefortheline.com confirming the number of teams it wishes to enter in the forum of the raceHUB community and arrange to attend a race briefing at the HUB.

• Each school must create its own school STEM community by registering its required details (as set outon the below website) and the names of its Teams at www.racefortheline.com . This will enable eachSchool to receive entry codes in the school community and confirmation of registration by email. EachSchool must input those entry codes when it enters each of its Teams’ speed testing times onto thecompetition leader board on the competition’s website –www.racefortheline.com (the “Competition Website”) (please also refer to sectionentitled"speed testing" below.)

• Each School must also register details of its Teams at www.racefortheline.com by clicking on the mapof local Race HUBs, finding your local Race HUB and joining the relevant HUB community.

• Teams must complete all activities required by this competition on school premises and withappropriate supervision by the School or at the local Race HUB under supervision from accreditedpractitioners in the HUB.

• Each School registering to take part in the competition must use standard Race Car Kits supplied byBLOODHOUND SSC education Limited or The Learning Partnership. Com Trading Ltd.Schools may order these either:(i) from a local Race HUB – each Race HUB may make available a certain number of free Kits atcompetition briefings in NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2016 for Schools which have created their ownSTEM collaboration community on Dendrite (www.racefortheline.com) and registered the requireddetails above (subject to availability) by OCTOBER 31st 2016.(ii) by purchasing Kits from the Dendrite on-line shop accessed in the Race HUB community atwww.racefortheline.com

• Each Team shall build one rocket car for entry into the competition (please refer to section entitled“Speed Testing” below (each a “Rocket Car”).

• Each Rocket Car must, at all times, be built solely and exclusively from:(i) any materials contained in one Kit (for the avoidance of doubt, not all materials contained in the Kitare required to be used to build the Rocket Car); and(ii) a BBC Micro:bit which may be provided to its School by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

• Each Team can programme its BBC Micro:bit, using www.codethemicrobit.com – to measure andcapture the acceleration of the Rocket Car and insert it into its Rocket Car.

• Each Team must monitor and record the top speed achieved by its Rocket Car during each race day viathe BBC Micro:bit timing gate. To assist in recording the speed of each Rocket Car, Schools may eitherpurchase timing gates from the on-line HUB shop at www.racefortheline.com or attend a race day attheir local Race HUB where timing gates and launchers may be made available free of charge (subjectto availability).

• Between each test run, Teams may wish to reshape or remodel their Rocket Car to achieve faster speeds.Modeling spreadsheets can be downloaded to assist teams in working out likely top speeds of their carsunder rocket motors.

• Each School must enter into the leader-board on the Competition Website the top speed achieved andmax acceleration data by each of its Team’s Rocket Cars using the entry codes obtained by that School.

• For each of its Teams, each School must (i) post on the Competition Website video evidenceshowing the run of the car and (ii) link the video to that Team’s fastest time on the leader boardon the Competition Website.

• The top 2 Primary school and top 2 Secondary school Teams on the leader board of the Race HUB at theclosing date for race entries of 17th March 2017 which have (i) achieved the fastest speeds as referred tothe on leader board on the Competition Website and (ii) provided the evidence referred to above (eacha “Qualifying Team”) will qualify for entry into the competition’s regional finals in England & Wales tobe held at 15 regional Hubs between the 20th March - 7th April 2017. The winning Primary team andsecondary team from each regional finals leader board will be invited to the national finals to be held atthe end of June 2017 (details of which will be provided to each School which has entered a QualifyingTeam) (the “National Final”).

• At the National Finals, each School with a Qualifying Team must send the team to the National Final toundertake the design and build and race of a new car with a new kit provided on the day, under thetime constraints of the day. The Schools of the three Qualifying Teams whose Rocket Cars achieve thethree fastest speeds at the National Final shall be chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners (please refer tosection on “Selection of Winner(s) below”).

Miscellaneous• Each School shall be responsible for obtaining any necessary and/or appropriate consents (including

parental consent) in connection with its Teams’ entry into, and participation in any activities relatingto, the competition (including attendance of Teams at the National Final and the Prize Day).

• To the extent that entry requires the submission of user-generated content such as photos, videos,etc., entrants warrant that their entry is genuine, is their original work, has not been copied fromothers, and does not violate the privacy, intellectual property rights or other rights of any other personor entity including any member of a Team. Each School shall be responsible for ensuring that anyphotographic or video evidence or other content referred to above complies with all laws.

• Entries will be ineligible if they (a) are incomplete or otherwise do not comply with these Terms andConditions; (b) exceed the maximum number of persons (4) per team; (c) violate the rights of anyother person or entity; and/or (d) are received outside of the Promotion Period set out below.

• Entry constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. Microsoft is notresponsible for lost, corrupted or delayed entries. The Learning Partnership.com Trading Limited(TLP) reserves the right to disqualify any School or member of a Team who violates these Terms andConditions.

3. TIMING. This promotion runs from 01:00 am GMT on 20th September 2016 up to (and including) 11.59:59 pmGMT on 17th March 2017 (inclusive) for the England and Wales competition (the “Promotion Period”).

4. USE OF YOUR ENTRY. Personal data which Schools provide upon entry may be used for future TLP marketingactivity if they indicate their consent on the entry form (if applicable). Otherwise such personal data will beused by TLP and agents acting on TLP’s behalf only for the operation of this promotion. In respect of anypersonal data provided by any School to TLP, that School shall be responsible for obtaining any required and/or appropriate consent from relevant persons in relation to that data and shall comply with all laws,regulations and guidance in relation thereto.

5. SELECTION OF WINNER(S). At the National Finals, the Schools of the three Qualifying Teams whose RocketCars achieve the three fastest speeds shall be chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The winning entries will

The micro:bit Model Rocket Car Challenge is kindly supported by:

be determined by a panel of judges with at least one (1) independent judge at the end of June 2017 for England and Wales competition. A maximum of one (1) prize per School is allowed. The winning Schools will be notified at the National Finals held at the end of June 2017 for England and Wales competition. The winner(s) may be asked to participate in further publicity or advertising.

6. PRIZE(S). There will be 3 prize(s) in total. The prize(s) will be as follows:

• 1st place – the winning team of students and one teacher from the winning School will win an all-inclusive trip to South Africa to spend a week with the BLOODHOUND Race team on the HakskeenPan and enjoy a week of activities in the area. In the event that the BLOODHOUND SSC undertakesa test run or record breaking run during that week the winners will be invited to watch as part ofthe BLOODHOUND team. A 1st prize cash prize of £1,000 (including VAT) awarded to the School.

• 2nd place - £500 (including VAT) cash prize awarded to the School• 3rd place - £250 (including VAT) cash prize awarded to the school• Qualifying Teams at the National Finals: In addition, all Schools with Qualifying Teams will be

awarded the right to have their school name printed on the tail-fin of the Bloodhound SSC car(value £50 including VAT).

The prize(s) are as stated and are not transferable. TLP reserves the right to substitute any (or all) prize(s) with (a) prize(s) of equal or greater value. The prize(s) will be sent by TLP or its agent no later than twenty eight (28)days after the winner(s) has/have been selected.The prize(s) may be considered a taxable benefit to the winner(s). The winner(s) will be directly responsible foraccounting for and paying to HMRC, or other relevant tax authority, any tax liability arising on their prize.Please contact TLP at [email protected] for any query related to the taxable amount for reporting toHMRC, or other relevant tax authority.

7. LIST OF WINNER(S). Each winner consents to the School’s name being made publicly available upon request.

The name(s) of the winner(s) will be available for a period of twenty eight (28) days after the selection of thewinner(s) by written request to [email protected].

OTHER. No correspondence will be entered into regarding either this promotion or these Terms and

Conditions. In the unlikely event of a dispute, TLP’s decision shall be final. TLP reserves the right to amend, modify, cancel or withdraw this promotion at any time but only before the delivery of the prize(s), without notice. Participants in this promotion agree that TLP will have no liability whatsoever for any injuries, costs, damage, disappointment or losses of any kind resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly from acceptance, misuse or use of a prize, or from participation in this promotion. Nothing in this clause shall limit TLP’s liability in respect of death or personal injury arising out of its own negligence or liability arising out of TLP’s fraud. TLP cannot guarantee the performance of any third party and shall not be liable for any act or default by a third party

8. SPIRIT OF THE COMPETITION. If an entrant attempts to compromise the integrity or the legitimateoperation of this promotion by hacking or by cheating or committing fraud in any way, we may seek damagesfrom that entrant to the fullest extent permitted by law. Further, we will disqualify that entrant’s entry to thispromotion and may ban the entrant from participating in any of our future promotions, so please play fairly.
