Brigantine 'Mountain Lass' 1849-1895Last updated: 22 October 2009

The "Mountain Lass" projectgerminated during the Bi-centenary celebrations of2007. In October 2009 GwynQuince sent us an update onthe people and processinvolved:

Poem about Mountain Lass...

"The 2007 sub-committee of the Aberaeron Yacht Clubproduced the Maritime Heritage day at The Yacht Club, whowere instrumental in engaging a local traditional shipwright(David Selmes) to build a scaled section of Mountain Lass forthe Maritime Heritage display.

David Thomson and Deirdre Sawyer (who is a descendent ofJohn Harries Senior, 1781 - 1863), led the 2007 sub-committee.

After the celebrations were over it was agreed by the 2007sub committee of AYC that there should be some enduringtribute to the Maritime Heritage of Aberaeron to emerge fromthe fantastic success of the celebrations and the enthusiasmof participants and public.

David Selmes has initiated research into Mountain Lass'history to find working drawings and dimensions and hasexpressed an interest in building a full scale working replicaof the vessel before he loses his skills through age andphysical deterioration.

He also has contacts andcolleagues of craftsmen whowould be interested inparticipating in the project.David has estimated that thecost would be in excess of£500,000.

A local entrepreneur (PeterBottoms), who has just

commenced a new venture producing timber, havingabandoned his fishing trade from Aberaeron, has offered tosource local timber for the project.

The immediate past Town Mayor (Phil Davies) has expressedan interest and is very supportive of the project. The currentTown Mayor (Elizabeth Evans) has also shown active andenthusiastic support for the project. The local Harbourmasterfor Aberaeron (Nigel Wells) has been consulted and is alsovery supportive.

The finished vessel will need a permanent base at Aberaeronand would ideally be berthed in a sheltered dry dock at theEast end of Aberaeron Harbour, where she can be viewed andvisited by tourists.

Mountain Lass and many other similar vessels were built andlaunched in Aberaeron Harbour in the mid nineteenth century,by the Harries family from the Dolphin yard adjacent to theDolphin Inn (now Trelawney) which was also owned by JohnHarries Senior - founder of the Shipyard.

It is proposed to build the ship at the east end of theharbour near the foot bridge to launch into the harbour.

A Local Master Mariner fromAberaeron (Captain HuwLewis) has offered to build ascale model of Mountain Lassand has also offered tomaster the ship during trialsafter commissioning.

The various charactersinvolved as above, includingmyself are now in the process of consolidating interestedvolunteers into a focussed group and preparing an applicationfor the formation of a "Community Interest Company" toattract funding and formalised plans for the project, whichwill be staged in three phases.

Phase 1 - The Dry Dock Home - Cei Aeron Quay

Our first proposal would be to construct a dry dock at theEast end of Aberaeron Harbour (to be named "Cei AeronQuay") as indicated in the draft plan below (coloured purple).

The dry dock could be built by volunteer and "communityservice" labour using traditional methods to minimise theimpact on the environment and character of the harbour.

The retaining wall along the river bank would be designed tochannel the river in its flow path along the north side of theharbour and to deflect the tendency to flood the southernpart of the harbour.

While waves from north westerly winds prevail within theharbour it will continue to be necessary to retain the rockbreakwater at the east end to diffuse waves which reach theeast bank.

However it is hoped that in time this phenomenon will beaddressed by calming measures to make the harbour a safehaven (possibly by deploying a seaward breakwater orhooked extension to south quay through the continuingAberaeron coastal defence scheme, which is not part of thisproject).

Some support will inevitably be sought from CountyArchitects, Estates and Planning departments of CeredigionCounty Council to administrate the progress of Cei AeronQuay.

Phase 2 - Brigantine Mountain Lass - Rebuild

The completed dry dock will enable Mountain Lass to berebuilt, launched and fitted out. This would be the onlyproject of its kind in Wales and the UK at this time, althoughinspiration has come from the French naval town ofRochefort, where an 18th century frigate "Hermione" (a muchlarger vessel) is currently being built using traditionalmethods.

We are proud of our shipbuilding heritage in Aberaeron fromthe 19th century and how better to ensure that our history isnot forgotten by future generations than to rebuild one of themost famous Aberaeron Brigantines, to sail the seas oncemore and demonstrate our pride.

Needless to say the construction stages of the vessel willalso attract tourism to our historic town.

Work is currently under weighto research further details ofMountain Lass and her sistership, Henry and Dora 1849 -1869 as background to therebuild project. The originalMountain Lass was 74.4'Long, 22.4' Beam, 11.1' Deepand 107 Tons (ULW).

An artists impression of how Mountain Lass will appear whenin dry dock at low tide in the proposed Cei Aeron Quay. (Thered lock gates can be seen sheltering the Brigantine andenabling the dock to remain dry at high tide).

Phase 3 - Adventure Voyages, Ambassador and LivingHeritage Museum

When complete, seaworthy and finally commissioned,Brigantine Mountain Lass will embark on adventure voyagesas an ambassador for Aberaeron and our maritime heritage.

The crew will comprise anyone who is willing and able tofund their own passage. Considerations will also be given todisaffected individuals who require financial support toembark upon a life changing adventure.

The Master will need to be a professional engaged by theCommunity Interest Company, who will continue to run theship as a non profit making organisation.

Significant inspiration has been taken from the recenttelevision series featuring Jamie Owen ("Turning the Tide")and he has personally expressed his support for the projectas our "champion".

Upon return to port she will always have a home in the drydock at Cei Aeron Quay, for maintenance and as a touristattraction and working museum/testament to our heritage, which will be the pride of Wales, Ceredigion and Aberaeron.

Inspiration has also come from New Haven, Connecticut,America, where the historical 19th century top sail Schooner"Amistad", (also immortalised in a Steven Spielberg film), hasbeen successfully rebuilt (launched in March 2000 - 78'L,23'B, 10'D, 136T) and currently tours the world as anambassador for freedom and diversity.

The creation of Mountain Lass in Aberaeron should be able toprovide leisure, training, tourism, voyages, employment, localinterest, skills, education, rehabilitation, motivation, pride, hope, a memorial to the souls of Welsh sailors andpreservation of our maritime heritage."

Catherine Lea from RhayaderWhat a fantastic idea, brilliant work will be done when it'sfinished. When not being a tourist attraction sailing this shipwill do wonders for lots of young people, just like the TallShips Youth Trust based in Portsmouth. It is great to sail onthem - quite an adventure. Well done Aberaeron and goodluck with the project.Sun Nov 8 19:14:26 2009

Adrian Turner. PennantI would be interested in physicaly helping with the project asa retired cabinett maker , I have always done work onboats, plastic and wood. well and steel and aluminium. Ihave good woodwork shop and some fairly large machines Sun Aug 9 20:09:56 2009

Deirdre from AberaeronDewi Lass was a gaff rig schooner 99 tons built 1862probably sister ship to "Gambia" built by Evan Jones in 1855- 97 tons (see illustrations by Stuart Evans AberytswythMuseum). My great grandfather Benjamin Harries sailed hismaiden voyage on Dewi Lass in 1880 at the age of 16. Hisfather (my great, great grandfather) built the MountainLass. The cargo of coal was probably unloaded by shovelinto baskets and winched off board. Dewi Lass may havesunk in 1904 at Long Strand near Cork in Ireland, accordingto internet wreck information - she was a "Bridgewater"Schooner carrying coal, she was salva! ged to Newport.Tue Jul 21 09:43:29 2009

Harold RogersMy grandfather and other prior relatives sailed on coalcarrying vessels that were built in the shipyard of E Jones atAberaeron in the 19th century and I am anxious to discovermore. They included the 'Dewi Lass' 'Commerce' and others.I am hoping you may be able to point me towards someonewho could help me. I would like to find, for example, justwhat the Dewi Lass looked like. My family lived atBridgwater, Somerset, and my late father told me theyloaded and unloaded the coal by hand. This raises thequestion of how much was loaded, and how it was loaded -sack, bag, loose, Etc., and how it was lifted into thewharves. Logic says sacks, but the only pictures I havefound showed men with shovels.Mon Jun 1 10:39:57 2009

Huw Goronwy Evans, Goodwick, Aberarth boy I build small boats , but I have also built my modelimpression of Mountain Lass which is on a window cill in theHarbourmaster Restaurant. I call it my impression as all thedetail I could find was in the County Records Office,Customs Register . Dr Geraint Jenkins was very helpful andloaned me a painting but I felt that artists licence hadplaced several things out of proportion so I made my modelto scale .I would greatly value any opportunity to help inthis projectMon Dec 22 09:57:25 2008

The Gwynne Family - Creators of AberaeronLast updated: 26 July 2007

Henry Phythian-Adams is thegreat great grandson ofColonel Alban Gwynne, whowas integral in the creation ofAberaeron as a town 200years ago. In May 2007 herecounted his relation'sinfluence on the town:

"The attractive town of Aberaeron owes its existence to theThomas-Jones-Gwynnes who apparently descended from themedieval lords of Towyn (near Cardigan), which eventuallycame to the Jones family of Tyglyn, Llanddewi Aberarth.

Dr. Alban Thomas was Assistant Secretary of the RoyalSociety but was sacked in the Jacobite scare of 1722-3.

After returning to Wales he married his relative, MargaretJones of Tyglyn, thus unwittingly launching the events thatled to the creation of Aberaeron.

Their younger son Alban became a rector in Hampshirehaving married a wealthy parson's daughter, who diedimmediately after giving birth to an only son.

An increasingly affectionate correspondence with his cousinSusanna Maria Jones of Tyglyn led to Alban coming toCardiganshire in 1797 to marry her.

She was the heiress of Tyglyn and Towyn and feelingbeleaguered by threats to her inheritance.

After the marriage, Alban took the name Thomas-Jones andbuilt the little chapel of St.Alban at Tyglyn. In 1805 his firstcousin Lewis Gwynne died a bachelor leaving almost all theMonachty estate to Alban and his wife.

There was also a huge pile of gold which had to be carriedon a horse sledge to Tyglyn. No one knows what happenedto much of this gold. Some must have been spent on buildingthe harbour at Aberaeron but the small mansion of Tyglynremained almost entirely as Alban and Susanna had known itfrom their childhood.

Now Lord of the Manor of Aberaeron, Alban had to take thename and arms of Gwynne so the couple became theReverend and Mrs.Thomas-Jones-Gwynne of Tyglyn while hisson Alban junior moved into Monachty mansion.

In 1807 the Reverend Alban obtained his private Act ofParliament to rebuild the harbour of Aberaeron, and the townwith its trades, crafts, fisheries and shipbuilding followed. Hedied in 1819 and Susanna so ruled the roost at Tyglyn thatshe was known in the family as "the Empress" though sheloved having her step-grandchildren about her.

After her death in 1830 the younger Alban, Colonel Gwynne,

came fully into the estate and the building of Aberaeron tookoff, principally in the renowned Alban Square. He alsoprovided a Town Hall in 1835 and a Church of England chapel(later rebuilt as Holy Trinity Church). The architect for thechapel, and clearly for the planned part of the town, wasEdward Haycock of Shrewsbury who may also have designedthe new wing Gwynne added to Monachty.

Colonel Gwynne had married Mary Anne Vevers of YarkhillCourt, Herefordshire, who bore him ten children. After thefamous head of Lampeter Grammar School moved toEdinburgh Academy, the Gwynnes took their younger sons tobe educated there and we find Mary Anne procuring stone forAberaeron from a Scottish quarry.

Tragically, she died in 1837 of typhus and eventually thecolonel married an Edinburgh lady who added six morechildren to his family. At the age of 57 Colonel Gwynne sailedto Australia to settle some younger sons there. Not long afterhe returned to Monachty, his eldest son, Captain AlbanGwynne, married so the colonel retired, first to London, thento Clifton where he died in 1861, still Lord of the Manor ofAberaeron, which continued to flourish.

Every heir of the family was named Alban until the last diedin 2003.

Commander Alban Gwynne, involved in highly secret work ondepth charges during the First World War, needed to live inthe south of England. In 1936 for financial reasons he had tosell the Aberaeron estate. Sadly, there are now no maledescendants of the family."

Aberaeron CallingLast updated: 05 July 2007

As part of Aberaeron'sBicentenary celebrations it wasdecided to establish anAmateur Special Events RadioStation. The station starts itsoperation on Saturday 28 July2007 and will continue for 28days. It will be manned byDyson Jones and Gwynne Griffiths, who explained more aboutthe project in July 2007.

"The station will have a special call sign, namely GB200A,which has been approved by the Ofcom Licensing Centre (thegovernment's telcoms and media regulator).

The objective of the exercise is to contact other "ham" radioenthusiasts to all corners of the globe and promoteAberaeron, its heritage and the 2007 programme of events.

The station will be located at Lampeter Road, Aberaeron andits major equipment will incorporate two transceivers (oneusing low power of 5 watts, whilst the other will have anoutput power of around 80/100 watts); aerial tuning units(necessary to balance between the transmitter and theantenna); and the antennae.

A long wire antenna will be used for the low frequencytransmission and a small vertical tubular antenna for use onthe higher frequencies. In addition a microphone and anelectronic key will be used.

The latter will have a horizontal movement that produces adah on one side and a di on the other. This type of key isdifferent from the more conventional one that uses an up anddown movement.

The transmission is restrictedto the use of approvedfrequencies and this can beaffected by many factors, e.g.season, daytime, solar, geomagnetic, climaticinterference, etc.. Since thestation's operation will largelybe used at daylight it isenvisaged that most of the

transmission will be undertaken on the 7MHz, 14MHz and21MHz frequencies ( the 40, 20 and 15 corresponding metreswavelengths).

Using the 7MHz frequency contacts should be achieved withother stations in the UK and West Europe whilst contacts withstations in Eastern Europe and the Far East would be madeon the 14MHz frequency and hopefully, with good conditionscontacts with stations from even further distances could bemade using the 21MHz frequency.

Since there is a need to establish many contacts with stations

in the UK and from afar, it is proposed that the mode oftransmission will be by voice (SSB) and morse (CW).

The use of FM for VHF will not be used since its poor locationis surrounded on three sides by steep hills.

For the use of SSB, most contacts will by conducted throughthe English language, with a few made in Welsh. Probablemost of the contacts will be made by morse.

This mode has its benefits; requires little power for use; usesless bandwidth; can penetrate through interference to retaincommunication and uses an "international language" thatallows all to understand each other, whether they be in Japanor Russia. This "language" is a form of a combination betweenthe use of three letter Q Codes and the use of abbreviations.Examples as -Q Codes Abbreviations.

QRM - I am suffering from interference.

AGN - Again.

QRS - Send slower.

CQ - Calling any stations.

Additionally there are operational procedures that one isexpected to follow. To establish a contact with another stationthere is a need for an initial general call such as - CQ CQ CQ DE GB200A GB200A GB200A PSE K.

A typical first contact response to a Scottish station might belike thus -

GM3XXX DE GB200A R GM OM TKS FER CALL UR RST 579 OPJOHN QTH ABERAERON OK? GM3XXX DE GB200A

Roughly this message says - " Received your transmission.Good Morning Old Man. Thanks for the call. Your Readabilityis 5 (5 out of 5), Strength of signal is 7 (7 out of 9) and theCW tone is 9 (9 out of 9). My name is John. The location isAberaeron. Do you understand my transmission?"

For a special events station it is the normal procedure tosend a confirmation card to all the contacted stations. This isdone by sending all the filled cards to the national radiosociety which in turn sends them to the national societies ofthe other countries.

The same system works for the incoming cards.

Bicentenary paintingLast updated: 14 February 2007

On 28 January 2007 artistAneurin Jones' commissionedpainting to celebrate theBicentenary of Aberaeronreceiving its charter in 1807was unveiled to the public. Here Aneurin, describes thepainting's genesis:

Pictures of the launch...

"I was extremely happy to accept the commission because Ihave a personal affection towards Aberaeron.

From an early age I spent those long summers watching theships in the harbour, playing on the quay and beingfascinated by the sea.

It was from the same harbour also that many of my familysailed the epic journey to Ohio in the 1840s. Therefore, inmany ways, my associations with Aberaeron are deep-rooted.

Whilst working on this painting, I spent many afternoons andevenings sketching and making preparatory notes, and in thecourse of doing so I met many local people who arepassionate about Aberaeron and also annual visitors whocome for the sea air and to relax.

My aim was to compose a painting which would convey thespirit of Aberaeron, rather than including every detail.

Painting is often a process of simplifying until one is left withthe meaningful essentials.

The challenge then of course is to create an interestingcomposition, and it is in this unity of form and pattern that Ihope that the essence of Aberaeron emerges."

Celebrating HeritageLast updated: 14 November 2006

Plans to celebrate Aberaeron'sBicentenary in 2007 include aheritage community project -Celebrating Our Heritage -thanks to an award of £50,000from the Heritage Lottery Fund.In November 2006 project co-ordinator Mair Lloyd fromAberaeron outlined plans for the Heritage Project.

"Aberaeron's Bicentenary marks an event which took place on28 July 1807 when a Private Act of Parliament was passed toconstruct the harbour at Aberaeron.

The layout of the town which grew around the new harbourwas carefully planned in the Georgian style, giving Aberaeronits distinctive architectural character. The names of streets andhouses such as Newfoundland Terrace, Milford House andManchester House indicate Aberaeron's historic importance as athriving commercial port and shipbuilding town.

The heritage community project complements the Aberaeron2007 Festival programme of concerts, parties and events byexploring and recording the fascinating heritage of Aberaeron'smaritime, social and architectural past.

Working with a number of partners, including CeredigionMuseum and the National Trust Llanerchaeron, the project willseek out and capture people's stories of life in the town, andfind out more about the daily lives of Aberaeron's sailors, merchants, shopkeepers and families.

Workshops will revive some of the long-forgotten skills such asrope knotting and navigating by the stars. Aberaeron'sschoolchildren will take part in a creative arts project, bringingto life Aberaeron stories, and different generations will cometogether to use the latest web-based technology forresearching family histories.

In addition to workshops and events, the project will leave alasting record of Aberaeron's heritage. Historic sites andbuildings in and around Aberaeron will be identified by bronzeplaques in the shape of the unique Aberaeron shovel', formingthe basis for a Town Trail.

An Aberaeron 2007 Exhibition will display photographs, picturesand curios associated with Aberaeron's heritage. The Exhibitionwill be housed in Peniel Chapel vestry throughout the summerof 2007, and a Quilting Exhibition will be held in Aberaeron'sMasonic Hall.

Encouraging people of all ages, residents and visitors, to takepart in the historic celebrations is a major aim of the project, creating opportunities for learning new skills, taking part inworkshops, and volunteering. 2007 is set to be a great yearfor Aberaeron, with something for everyone, and two hundredyears of history to celebrate."

Scanning DayLast updated: 21 May 2007

A hugely successful scanningday was held on Saturday 12May in Aberaeron as part ofthe bicentenary celebrations.Mair Lloyd describes whathappened:

"Six scanners were kept busy all day attempting to keep upwith the hundreds of photographs and postcards, as well astickets, posters, articles etc relating to Aberaeron over thepast 200 years brought in by the community.

Michael Freeman, Curator of Ceredigion Museum was incharge of the event and together with Ffion and Rhodri Jonesscanned with only short breaks from 10.00 am until 5.00 pmwith other volunteers, too numerous to mention doing shorterstints.

A huge thank you to thepeople of Aberaeron and areawho so generously donatedtheir photographs, etc, andwho are allowing us to usethem in the BicentenaryExhibition.

There are still manyphotographs left to be scanned and so this is an ongoingproject and one which will take months to cataloguecorrectly. Although it will be impossible to show everyphotograph during this year's exhibition all of them will becatalogued and hopefully be used in future exhibitions andkept for posterity.

Despite that, if anyone still has photographs of interest wewill be delighted to accept them. Merched y Wawr membersworked hard all day in the kitchen and kept spirits andenergy up by ensuring that everyone was fed and watered, diolch yn fawr.

Finally thank you to theBritish Legion who supportedthe Bicentenary Celebrationsby allowing the use of theirpremises without any charge."
