Year after year, peoplelook for ways to save moneyon heating their homes. TheBetter Business Bureau serv-ing Chicago and Northern Illi-nois (BBB) is offering achecklist for homeowners tosafely prepare their homesduring the winter monthsand perhaps save a few dol-lars in the process.
“High heating costs are aproblem each winter forcash-strapped consumers,”said Steve J. Bernas, presi-dent & CEO of the BBB. “Itmakes good economic sensefor consumers to winterizetheir homes; a small up-frontinvestment increases theenergy efficiency of a houseand reduces overall heatingcosts in the long run.”
The following is a BBBhome winterizing checklist:
Caulking and weather strip-ping. To prevent air leaks, homeowners should inspectthe caulking around windows
and doors and check for crack-ing and peeling. In addition, ensure that doors and win-dows shut tightly and no coldair is coming in due to worndown weather stripping.
Furnace. Furnaces olderthan 15 years might be duefor a replacement. For newerfurnaces, make sure the filteris clean and the thermostat isworking properly.
Heating ducts. Ductsshould be cleaned onceevery two years. Homeown-ers should also consideradding insulation to anyexposed ductwork in orderto prevent losing heated air.
Emergency kit. When awinter storm strikes, anemergency kit should haveall essential materials in onehandy place. An emergencykit should include flashlights, candles and matches, a firstaid kit, bottled water, non-perishable food and a bat-tery-powered radio.
Smoke alarm and carbonmonoxide detectors. Testsmoke alarms and carbonmonoxide detectors andinstall fresh batteries. Home-owners should considerreplacing smoke alarms olderthan 10 years.
Gutters and ridge vents.Gutters should be cleaned toprevent any clogs that couldcause rainwater to back upand freeze, making the gut-ters expand and crack. Theridge vents need to becleaned as well in order tohelp prevent stagnate air.
Windows. Window screensshould be taken down andreplaced with storm win-dows; they provide an extralayer of protection and keepthe house warmer. Investingin a window insulator kit is aninexpensive option to keepout drafts as well.
