His Family Is Visiting the Middle East. We sit here amongst some talk of the United States leading a war against Syria, we are 23 kms away from the Syrian border, with serious worries of a Syrian retaliation with chemical warfare against Jordan's border towns. I have read the following somewhere, try and understand what's going on, this is your guide to the Middle East. Iran is backing Syrian Assad. Gulf States are against Assad!Assad is against Muslim Brotherhood. Muslim Brotherhood and Obama are against General Sisi of Egypt. But Gulf states are pro Sisi! Which means they are against Muslim Brotherhood!Iran is pro Hamas, but Hamas is backing Muslim Brotherhood!Obama is backing Muslim Brotherhood, yet Hamas is against the United States!Gulf States are pro United States. But Turkey is with Gulf States against Assad; yet Turkey is pro Muslim Brotherhood against General Sisi. And General Sisi is being backed by the Gulf states!Welcome to the Middle East and have a nice day.

The dangers of sedentary lifestyles "Our bodies have evolved over millions of years to do one thing: move," After all, humans were hunters and gatherers and survival meant constantly being on the move. Thanks to technological advances resulting in an ever expanding number of labour-saving appliances, using elevators instead of stairs, riding in cars to school or work, the Internet, television and an increasingly longer work week, the human need for movement has largely disappeared and been replaced by a sedentary lifestyle. Electronic living has sapped almost every flicker of activity from our daily lives.

Public Health Organizations and various scientific associations have produced evidence based physical activity/exercise guidelines for the prevention and management of diabetes. These include accumulating a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise weekly, spread over at least 3 days, with no more than 2 consecutive days with no exercise and including resistance exercises 3 times per week.

Type 2 diabetes is a global public health crisis that threatens the economies of all nations, particularly developing countries. Fuelled by rapid urbanization, nutrition transition, and increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the epidemic has grown in parallel with the worldwide rise in obesity.

According to the Canadian Community Health Survey reported by Statistics Canada in 2007, 48% of Canadians aged 12 and over — or about 12.7 million people — were physically inactive, getting the equivalent of less than 30 minutes of walking each day. 25 per cent — 6.6 million Canadians — reported that they were sedentary most of the day.

The Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) conducted a study using at least four days of valid data collected from a total of 2,832 adult’s aged 20 to 79 and 1,608 children/adolescents aged 6 to 19. For scientific validity, the activity level of participants was measured directly using a small device akin to a sophisticated pedometer worn on the subject's hip for seven days.

Highlights from the survey included:

Just over half of all adults accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity one day a week, but only 5 per cent of adults manage to accumulate the recommended 150 minutes through the week.On average, adult men take about 9,500 steps a day, compared with 8,400 for women. Among older adults aged 60 to 79, men averaged 7,900 steps each day, while women averaged 7,000 steps.Over the years, the Harvard School of Public Health has conducted two large studies to quantify the risk of sedentary lifestyle on the development of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

The first major study (The Nurses ’Health Study) included 50,277 nurses who were aged 30 to 55 and had their health status followed for 6 years. 3757 (7.5%) of them who were not obese at the start of the study but became obese by the end. There were also 1,515 new cases of type 2 diabetes. Adjusting for age, smoking, exercise levels, dietary factors, and other variables, each 2 hour block of TV watching was associated with a 23% increase in obesity and a 14% increase in the risk of diabetes. Researchers estimated that 30% of new cases of obesity and 43% of new cases of diabetes could be prevented by adopting a more active lifestyle (<10 hours/week of TV watching and ≥30 minutes/day of brisk walking).

The second study (The Health Professional's Follow-up Study) included 37,918 health professional men aged 40 to 75 years whose health status was followed for 20 years. Each 2 hour block of watching TV independent of physical activity was associated with a 20% higher risk for Type 2 diabetes. The participants in the study who watched more TV also tended to have unhealthy eating habits (higher intake of processed meat, snacks and sugar-sweetened beverages, and fewer fruits, vegetables and whole grains). This eating pattern was directly related to advertisements and food cues appearing on TV.

In addition researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health performed an analysis of data from all the studies conducted from 1970 to March 2011 and published the results in the Journal of Medical Association. Here is a brief summary:

Four studies, involving 175,938 people, focused on type 2 diabetes. There were 6,428 new cases during an 8.5-year follow-up (average).Four studies focused on non fatal cardiovascular disease and involved 34,253 people. When they had been followed for 10.4 years, 1,052 of them developed non-fatal heart disease.Three studies looked at all-cause mortality, and involved 26,509 individuals - there were 1,879 deaths during a 6.8-year follow-up.In conclusion, findings from this composite data suggested that people who watched TV regularly for two hours a day had a 20% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a 15% higher risk of developing fatal or nonfatal cardiovascular disease, and a 13% greater risk of dying early from any cause.Further studies are needed to determine whether reducing prolonged TV viewing can prevent chronic disease morbidity and mortality. In summary: Cutting back on “sit” time is just as important as increasing “fit” time.

People adopt different ways to cut down on sedentary time. Here are some reported by people living with diabetes:

Doing resistance exercises while watching TVDoing stretches while watching TVIn commercial breaks, going up and down a flight of stairsScrubbing the stove tops and other kitchen counter tops is a great way to help flex your arm muscles.Like the TV anchors, get a standing desk instead of sitting at workCleaning one room of the house at a time for 15 minutes every day 20 minutes after dinner instead of sitting (Just watch the blunting effect on blood sugar too!)Take the grandchild in stroller for 15 minutes twice a dayLying in bed and doing abdominal crunches before sleeping and on waking up in the morning( a good way to get rid of that spare tire)In summer, frequent visits to the backyard to tend the plantsStanding rather than sitting on the bus/train commute and giving your seat to someone else who really needs to sit.

The Cuban Sandwich is said to have originated in Florida, and is a variation of the ham and cheese sandwich. While there is still some debate as to the contents of a "true" Cuban sandwich, they always contain two meats like Pork, Ham or Salami, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard. The traditional Cuban begins with the bread, a French baguette works quite nicely. The loaf is sliced into lengths of 6-12 inches, lightly buttered or brushed with olive oil on the crust, and cut in half horizontally. A coat of yellow mustard is spread on the bread. Then roast pork, glazed ham Swiss Cheese and thinly-sliced dill pickles are added in layers. Sometimes the pork is marinated and slow roasted. It is then cooked in a Panini press or weighted down between two frying pans until the outside is crispy and the inside is hot and moist.

Spread 1 tbsp of mayonnaise on the inside of one half of the sandwich and a tbsp of mustard on the other half. Fold each slice of the ham in four and put 3 slices on each of the buns Put 3 slices of cheese and 2 slices of pickle on top of the hamLay the chicken or Pork on the cheese and pickles and top with the other half of the bunPreheat the Panini press for about 15 minutes until it is hot Place the buns in the press and cook until the cheese is melted and the bun is crisp. About 3 to 5 minutesKeep warm in the oven until ready to serve.

From a sports observer: It seems to me that the Olympics were two great weeks of sport and television, the athletes were amazing, hat's off to all of them. Canada was great with 25 medals ..10 of them Gold and for unbelieveable excitement both the women's and men's curling and hockey teams won gold. But lets not forget just how closer the world came to parity, medals were won on a scale that most of us don't understand 1/100

th of a second or several 100's of a second determining winners in most sports. The difference between a women's hockey gold was a puck hitting our goalpost with our net empty and just over a minute left in the game (see photo on Page 1.) If that puck had gone in, the game would have been over and we would not have won the Gold Medal. Both the men's curling and men's hockey were close all the way through. The women curlers led by Jennifer Jones were just great. They didn't lose a game during the whole competition. With these two weeks over what have we learned, hard work, determination and understanding make winners and all athletes met and surpassed this with flying colours. Bring on the Paralympics Games ...Sochi 2014.

Snow Beach

Snowmobile Safety“Part 2”

Common sense is a big factor in safe Snowmobiling. Another big factor we see missing in many snowmobile riders is respect, not only for the rules on the trail but for private property. Sadly common sense must be learned and respect is hard to legislate. However there are still many snowmobile riders who do not know the laws that are there to make everyone's rides safe. Below are some sections from the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act (MSVA) all riders should be a where of:Section 13 of the MSVA states that every person in charge of a snowmobile who is directly or indirectly involved in a collision that causes an injury or apparently $400.00 worth of damage shall report it to the nearest Police Service and provide the required information. That information includes; the names and addresses of the persons involved the date and location of the collision and the circumstances on how the collision occurred.Section 17 (11) of the MSVA states that if your Drivers' Licence is suspended by that act or any other Act you are also suspended from operating a snowmobile. So for example if your Ontario Drivers' licence was suspended for a drinking and driving offence and you are prohibited from driving on the road you also cannot drive your snowmobile.Section 20 (1) of the MSVA states that everyone that rides on a motorized snow vehicle (snowmobile) or rides in an object that is towed by it must were helmet that is approved and is secured properly. The only exemption to this law is in Section 20 (2) of the MVSV where the operator of the snowmobile is not required to wear a helmet by law if it is driven of land occupied by the owner of the snowmobile, but all passengers do!Section 23 and 24 of the MSVA outlines that the owner of a snow vehicle can be held responsible for the action of the individual they allow to operate their snow vehicle and can also be charged under this act. Final thoughts, travelling across water on a snowmobile is dangerous at any time. Even when the water appears frozen solid there can be pressure cracks and weak spots in the ice which can give way because of the weight of a snow vehicle. If you must travel across frozen water wear a buoyancy snowmobile suit and carry ice picks and practice using them. Remember - your snow vehicle is made of metal and, like a rock, will sink if it breaks through the ice.Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Snowmobiling is a sport and like all sports there are rules and policies that govern and impact that sport. Three critical policies are; 1) the Criminal Code of Canada, 2) the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act of Ontario R.S.O. 1990 (MSVA) and 3) your local municipal bylaws. In the Town of Wasaga Beach it is By-Law #2000 – 06 & #2005 – 82. These pieces of legislations all apply to the safe operation of this motor vehicle. As with the operation of all motor and non-motor vehicles common sense should be present and generally when it is not riders get hurt and sometimes killed. Sadly to date in the Ontario Provincial Police patrol areas of the Province of Ontario 6 individuals have died as a result of being in collisions involving motorized snow vehicles. In most of these deaths the speed of the motorized snow vehicle was a contributing factor. The MSVA is Provincial Legislation that applies to the Province of Ontario and gives municipalities in Ontario approval to enact bylaws that impact the operation of motorized snow vehicles or more usually called snowmobiles in that jurisdiction. We find that the general knowledge of snowmobile enthusiasts in regards to laws that control their sport vary greatly and as such I would like to increase that knowledge with examples of laws that if not obeyed increases the danger of injury or death to either the operator or the public:· Snowmobile operators who drink and drive face the same penalties under the Criminal Code of Canada for Impaired Operation, Excess 80 mgs. and Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample as if they were driving their motor vehicle on a roadway.· Section 14(1) of the MSVA states a maximum speed limit for motorized snow vehicles travelling on highway property where automobile's maximum speed is 50 km/hr or any public park or exhibition grounds is 20 km/hr. This section also states a maximum speed limit for motorized snow vehicles travelling on highway property where automobile's maximum speed is greater than 50 km/hr or on trails is 50 km/hr.· Section 9 (1),(2)&(3) of the MSVA outlines the requirements that the operator of a motorized snow vehicle must have to operate this type of motor vehicle either along the highway, crossing it at 90 degrees or operating it on an OFSC Trail. For all 3 the operator has to be at least 16 years of age and possess a valid Drivers' Licence or a valid motorized snow vehicle operator's licence or be a resident of any other province, country or state and holds a licence issued by such province, country or state which authorizes the person to drive a motorized snow vehicle. The exception is on the OFSC Trails where the operator can be 12 years of age and must possess a valid motorized snow vehicle operator's licence.Remember to check out my next edition of “On Duty” on Beach Booster, where I continue my discussion on snowmobile safety.

Get ready to be wowed by the Community Arts Celebration scheduled for May 30, 2015! This is going to be an epic day where a downtown street in Collingwood will close to accommodate the many fine artists, vendors, crafters, jewelers, and more from across the region. Performers of all type and buskers will line up a street in Collingwood and the Historic Gayety Theatre will showcase live performances from local and out of town artists such as musicians, dancers, dramatic performers etc. Should this not be enough to satisfy your artistic palate the local restaurants will create new menu items or adapt their menus showcasing a flair for cuisine. There's even talk of having a Chef-off competition for the regions' most innovative restaurant venue. This event will draw great media exposure promoting artists in this region. The idea came from Damian where one night with Khaleel back in November after several open mic sessions and limited attendance paved the way for an innovative annual event for the entire community to enjoy. “The concept of the Community Arts Celebration is exactly that gets the entire community together make an epic celebration never been seen before, close the city street line them with arts and vendors. Invite Rogers TV, Rogers already signed up for six cameras and film the event for broadcast to the entire area”, states Damian. As far as genre of talent and artist Damian explains: “It is wide open. Any aspiring professional band or up and coming semi-professional young dancers from a

ballet group, to the best of music, the best of dance, the best of arts school.” The Historic Gayety Theatre will be used as a main stage for the celebration and will run in parallel with the Street Festival. Should you be interested in participating as a performer you can attend some of the open mic sessions dates to be announced or submit your videos. A jury will be selected for these sessions. Damian's wife, Lisa, is looking after all the logistic of the Street Festival and who will become a jury. The team is growing quickly up to 30 individuals so far. “If we can get 100 of volunteers so no one is overloaded. It shows how the community can get to know each other as well as the sponsors on how they are contributing”, says Khaleel. If you're interested in being a sponsor and be part of this event you can contact either Damian or Khaleel at

Chris Neil was born in 1979 in Markdale and was raised just outside Flesherton on the family farm. He first started out playing minor hockey in Flesherton. After this he played for the Grey Bruce Highlanders of the South-Central Triple A Hockey League. It was after this that he got his junior hockey start playing for the Orangeville Crushers. Chris made his way into the Ontario Hockey League where he played for three seasons with the North Bay Centennials. It was here that the scouts for Ottawa first spotted him. He then spent two seasons in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he soon came to the conclusion that the Ottawa Senators had enough skill, but what they needed was a little bit of grit to be winners. Chris figured that the quickest way into the NHL would be to come across as a two-way checker with some fortitude who was willing to take on anything that would come his way. It took him 133 games and 694 penalty minutes, but Chris’ dream was finally a reality when he took that leap into the NHL. Chris, at a height of 6’1” plays Right Wing and is known to play the role of enforcer, goon, and trash talker. Chris and his former teammate Mike Fisher were most certainly popular with the fans for playing rough and trying their hardest. Chris works hard, and he plays hard, and all of his effort is really paying off. In July of 2012 he signed a three year contract for $2,000,000 each of the first two years and $1.750,000 in the final year. While people Canada wide are cheering for the Ottawa Senators during the playoffs, everyone locally was cheering for Chris; the boy from Flesherton who made it into the NHL.

March Has Been Declared National PROBUS Month. With five PROBUS clubs currently operating in Wasaga Beach representing some 700 plus members in our community this is a very momentous celebration for Wasaga Beach. The PROBUS Canada website has a very engaging banner tagline on its front page:“OUR STRENGTH IS FELLOWSHIP, OUR SUCCESS IS PARTICIPATION”Attending a PROBUS meeting or watching PROBUS members volunteer as engaged citizens of Wasaga Beach it is apparent that this tagline is alive and well throughout the five PROBUS clubs we are fortunate enough to have in right here in Wasaga Beach. These clubs add vigor and purpose to our community and help make up the fabric of a vibrant, engaged fulfilled and contributing older adult population in our town.Recently, after consultation with its club representatives, PROBUS Centre-Canada declared this March as National PROBUS Month. This milestone is declared nationally to celebrate PROBUS for the purposes of enriching its meaning among members, and enhancing its visibility throughout each community across Canada. The idea is for each club across Canada to dedicate its regular meeting of the designated month, or part thereof, to celebrating PROBUS. Special events within a club, (luncheon, special speaker, awards, development of a new club, etc.), municipal designation, a special presentation from PROBUS Centre, are just a few of the options available to all these PROBUS clubs. It’s time all Canadians recognize the role PROBUS has in bringing richness to our society. Throughout PROBUS Clubs worldwide, PROBUS provides opportunity for regular gatherings for those who, in retirement or semi-retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar level of interest. For example, PROBUS provides options for members to maintain a path of fellowship and learning.Arising out of their membership activities there is a self-generating goodwill, a sense of belonging, a diverse background of interests, ensuring for PROBUS a highly successful future as a firmly established part of the community. I have found personally the five clubs in Wasaga Beach house a plethora of talented, accomplished and accredited people that have tremendous capabilities to lend a hand to our community when it’s needed. Talking with Gene Stephenson a past president of Wasaga Beach Beachcombers Mixed PROBUS club, Gene goes on to say: “The membership of our Wasaga Beach PROBUS clubs is so vast and varied that you will find expertise in virtually any field of endeavour you may be interested in such as marketing, engineering, sales, film, education, etc., you name it.” The presidents of our five PROBUS clubs in Wasaga Beach are as follows: Marie Jaques, all ladies, NEW WAVES PROBUS Club, Helen Lombardi, all ladies, WASAGA SUNBIRDS LADIES PROBUS Club, Sharon Mattews, all Ladies, PROBUS AT THE BEACH Club, Peter Willmott, all men, Wasaga MENS PROBUS Club and Ron Hanson, mixed, BEACHCOMBERS MIXED PROBUS Club.

Currently there are over 4,000 PROBUS clubs the world over, comprising more than 400,000 members. In Canada, there are 226 active clubs accounting for over 31,000 members. The word PROBUS is derived from the taking letters PRO from the word Professional and the letters BUS from the word business to get PROBUS. Our five PROBUS clubs of Wasaga Beach are part of a modern world concept to address the healthy longer life of our citizens keeping them engaged, fulfilled and to remain healthy with the energy to contribute to our community and mentor our people as we all strive to make Wasaga Beach the preferred town in which to live, work and play.

In 1925, Helen Keller attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. In Ontario, the Lions Home for the Deaf designed an award call the Helen Keller Award to honor outstanding Lions, Lioness and Leos. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club presented Helen Keller Awards to two of our members, Lion Martin Campbell and Lion Beverly Fowler. Lion Martin is our Past President and is currently the Zone Chair 8 North. Besides the endless hours that he has contributed to the club, during his time as president, our club brought in 13 new members! Lion Beverly is another one of our hard working Lions looking after the attendance for the dinner meetings and decorating and she excelled as our “tail twister” for the past two years bringing laughter to the club. Beverly is also our best Toonie Draw Ticket seller at our Home and Garden Show. Congratulations to both Martin and Beverly!

There’s still some snowy weeks left this winter and that’s good news for snowmobile enthusiasts. Simcoe and Grey counties boast some terrific terrain and awesome views of the Niagara Escarpment to Georgian Bay and more.

The local district (eight) of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs has put together a figure-eight loop that cuts through much of the district and offers a sample of the area’s best features. The loop — called Ride the 8 — is well-liked because of its connected trails and ride-up amenities.

The loop brings riders to Wasaga Beach, on the south shore of Georgian Bay.An extension of the trail along Beck Street allows riders easy access to the shops and restaurants in the east end of town. From there, you can access all of Wasaga Beach.

Local hospitality, well-groomed trails, great scenery and plenty of places to get food and fuel make Wasaga Beach a popular destination for snowmobilers..There’s 110 km of trails in Wasaga Beach, a portion of which are on land owned by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The highlight is the dune area (OFSC trail 603) with an elevated lookout of the Nottawasaga River. You’re up about 150 feet and it overlooks the river and you’re always seeing deer down on the far side at any time of the day.

People come from far and wide to ride the local trails.

Because of the lake, we get great lake effect snow, so we are generally promised good, early snow.Wasaga Beach is less of a destination and more of a throughway, meaning people use the area as a base, going out on day trips. The best places to stay overnight are Saga Resort and Luau Resort.Boston Pizza, Studs Lonigans Pub and anywhere in the Stonebridge Town Centre plaza are easily accessible by snowmobile and popular gathering places for sledders.

Still More Good Snowmobiling This Winter

The Royal Distributing Cup, presented by St. Onge Recreation, took place at the Georgian Downs in Barrie, Ontario this past weekend. The heated grandstands were filled to capacity both Saturday and Sunday for the 6th round of the Rockstar Energy Canadian National Series and a lengthy track created thanks to the abundance of snow we've been fortunate enough to have this winter.

In the Sport 600 class we had some new faces on the podium Saturday afternoon. One racer who is definitely not a stranger to the podium this season though, #102 YanickBoucher of Heart, Ontario took the win on Saturday and is gaining points in the National series Championship. #507 Justin Gaudet took second place and put himself on the podium for the first time, ahead of #190 Dave Munshaw of Bradford, Ontario. This was also Munshaw's first time putting his Polaris on the podium but we wouldn't be surprised to see both Gaudet and Munshaw make another appearance up front. On Sunday, it was a more familiar podium with #601 Zacharie Holmes taking the win on his Country Corners Arctic Cat. In second place was #259 Jared Heshka of Bracebridge, Ontario on his Ski-Doo. #168 Ryan McIver took third place thanking Barnett Motorsports for all of their help with his Ski-Doo. After the sixth round of the Rockstar Energy National Series, it's #601 Zacharie Holmes with a comfortable lead ahead of #102 Yanick Boucher. If Holmes can race consistently for the rest of the season and hold off Boucher, he'll win himself a brand new 800cc Viper ATV Sponsored by CPI Recreation Products and Phantom Snowmobiles!

have been seen eyeing up the grandprize of a 2014 Kawasaki 250F Motocross bike sponsored by Canadian Kawasaki and Factory Recreation!Exclusive to the Canadian Snowcross Series and thanks to the support of Arctic Cat and Polaris, the Junior F1 Challenge is back again for another season! Each weekend, the Junior F1 Challenge provides three local youths with the unique oppourtunity to try Snowcross racing for their first time. Outfitted with all of the required safety gear and on-the-track instruction from Pro-Lite racer, #779 Tyler Billings, the new competitors took to the track in the Junior F1 division on Sunday. From Orillia, Ryan Ball had the chance to try out the new Polaris Shift 550 and was able to finish an impressive second place overall. Specer Ough, from Barrie, finished in third place on the new ArcticCat SP500 and Tyler Desroches of Innisfil, who represented Central Ontario Powersports on a Polaris Shift 550, finished in fourth place. All participants had a great time and we've been told one is already trying to talk his parents into a full race season next year!Racers head North this weekend to Timmins, Ontario for the Eclipse Financial Pro Challenge. The City of Timmins snow dump will be transformed into a race venue for the third and final round of the Triple Crown on March 1 & 2. In the Pro-Lite division we saw six different racers on the podium over two days of racing, a true testament to the level of competition in the Pro-Lite division. On Saturday #22 Brandon Bradbury was out front in the lead where he appears to be most comfortable, until he went down in the back section and had difficulty re-starting his machine, falling to the back of the pack yet still managing to make it back up to twelve place with limited time left in the race. Capitalizing on Bradbury's accident was #59 Billy Turner of Master Link Fence/139 Designs who had been Bradbury's shadow for thefirst half of the race. Turner held onto take the checkered flag for the win. #151 Jacob Gervais put his G-Force Racing Polaris in second place at the finish line ahead of #211 Blake Taylor. Taylor has been having an exceptional season for such a young racer, the London Recreation/Wilson Ponds racer has natural talent that is really start to shine. On Sunday, it was #107 Tom Adams out front from the start shocking the crowd. After nearly a year off from racing, Adams was racing this weekend for Byers Motorsports after their Pro racer, #219 Jamie Byers was sidelined with an injury. Although he was riding great out front for the first three laps, Adams strength wore off quickly and he began to fall back slowly through the field. A hard charging pack of five racers, all vying for the lead, kept the crowd on their feet. #18 Mitchell King was out front with #637 Mitch McNair, #603 Ben Holmes, #22 Brandon Bradbury, and #151 Jacob Gervais all fighting to knock each other out of their way. At the finish line it would be #18 Mitchell King holding on for the win, with #603 Ben Holmes (Country Corners Arctic Cat) in second place and #637 Mitch McNair in third. On the podium, Holmes in true Canadian fashion wore a Canadian Hockey toque celebrating the Canadian men's Olympic Hockey team who had won Gold just hours earlier. King thanked Barnett Motorsports for all of their help fine-tuning his sled. Although they had a rough day with tuning on Saturday, he said they definitely have it figured out now and won't be making any changes before the next race “If it ain't broke, don't fix it”. Although a rough weekend left him off the podium both days, #22 Brandon Bradbury had a big enough points lead going into the Royal Distributing Cup that he continues to hold onto the Rockstar Energy National Series points lead! Starting to creep up on Bradbury now are Jacob Gervais and Ben Holmes, both who

Mixers Lion Basil Boyd and Lion John Nolasco headed up the Snowman Mania Pancake Team at the Lions Den on Sunday of the Family Day Weekend. Lions served almost 300 plates of Pancakes.Wasaga Beach Lions thanks all those who came out to enjoy the food and socializing. Wasaga Beach is a unique place that is full of amazingly talented people, from all walks of life! We are blessed with being able to stay close to home here in The Beach and enjoy some of this talent, often providing us with great entertainment!

Wayne Buttery is an area musician who continues to entertain audiences in Wasaga Beach and beyond. I personally remember being introduced to Wayne and his amazing talent at

The Dyconia Resort and later at special events and/or meals at Wasaga Sands Golf Club. Wayne moved to the Wasaga Beach area in 1993 and eventually formed the band Wayne Buttery & The Groove Project in 1998. Wayne is the first one to admit, “since moving to the area... I have met so many amazing talented musicians... and I

have enjoyed working with so many of them”.There have been many talented and well known musicians performing as part of the Wayne Buttery & The Groove Project over the years and they have entertained fans far and wide, but the band has always called the Wasaga Beach and area home. Currently, all of but one of the members of Wayne Buttery & The Groove Project

are from the Georgian Triangle! Dennis King, drummer is from Victoria Harbour, Charlie Hinkel, Bassist is from Penetanguishene, Russ Strathdee from Barrie, Paul Robillard from Penetanguishene and Organist Gabor Szepesi is from Mississauga. In 2008, many beach folks may remember the Wednesday Night Jam held weekly at Cheerleaders, when Wayne Buttery & The Groove Project provided great entertainment. The demise of Cheerleaders, left folks wanting their regular Wednesday night entertainment... and the famous Wasaga Beach landmark, The Beacon Restaurant welcomed Wednesday Night Jam to their establishment! Wednesday Night Jam at The Beacon continues to be a popular midweek event and brings some very famous names to Wasaga Beach! Special guests to this weekly event include the likes of Chuck Jackson, Gene Hardy, Mark “Bird” Staford, Lisa Hutchinson, Vic Cassis, Ronnie Douglas and so many more!Wayne is currently working with the annual Wasaga Beach Blues Festival at Stonebridge Town Centre, in bringing his truly local talent to this great event.
