WASAGA BEACH - The town may be a summer-time playground, but local businesses want people to know the home of the world's longest freshwater beach is open year-round.

On Saturday, more than 100 people showed up at the main beach area for a giant group photo to prove it.

The event was the brainchild of Wasaga River Resort manager Elizabeth Rossi who, with the help of Hogan Courrier, took it from concept to reality within a week.

Rossi said it was the ongoing woes surrounding three of the four bars on the main beach area that spurred her into action.

"What really triggered it was last August when the bars closed down," she said. "We had a sold-out summer, [but] as soon as those bars closed down and it hit the media, we started getting phone calls, people wanting to cancel, [asking] if Wasaga Beach was open."

"We want to show community support and show that we're strong. Stand up and say, 'we're open,'" added Courrier. "We all stand together as business owners - even competitors."

Courrier had local professional photographer Alex Edward capture the moment, and a print will ultimately be presented to town council to hang in the municipal office. Edward took several shots, which will be posted to a local Facebook group to allow local members who are on social media select the best.

"We had great support from the [business] community, and there were people who were just average citizens who came down to listen to some music, see the energy and be part of the buzz," Courrier said.

"You couldn't put into words what was happening," added Rossi. "It was like one big community hug that lasted for an hour."

Courrier is a relatively recent arrival to the community, moving to Wasaga Beach last spring from Marmora, in Hastings County, where he was also heavily involved in the community.

"I come from a long past of community involvement and helping the community recognize themselves and realize that community is so important, that without community, there is no business," said Courrier, who owns Wasaga Beach Geeks and Rivershore Cottages.

"When I put the idea out there on social media, they really ran with it," Rossi said. "I didn't really need to ask anyone for assistance - it was like everyone jumped on board."

Rossi said the goal is to get the message out that Wasaga Beach is more than just those bars, adding the community has struggled with the public perception of the town being shut down since the 2007 fire that destroyed one of the buildings in the mall area.

"We're going to make a success out of this town, with or without those bars," said Rossi, adding she had 'kudos' for the management of the one bar, The Sandbar, which has remained open. "This year we're almost sold out again (at her resort), but we get the odd question, what about the bars.

“We're going to send a message back to those bars, 'we're moving on without you, regardless of whether we're getting any answers [on reopening] ... you see how successful you're going to be, because there's going to be success all around you'."

Rossi said she continues to support and promote The Sandbar.

"I'm going to support that bar this year, I'm going to bring them right up to the top so they have the best year ever," she said.

The organizers also collected food for the Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank, and raffled off a Brian Smith election sign for $50 - that money is also going to the food bank.

"My goal with this whole thing was to get Wasaga Beach to stand up and say, 'we're here, we're open, we're community, we're tight-knit, and we're four-season,'" Courrier said. "That's why we wanted to do so quick, so we could get it out there and show snow on the ground and that we are open in the wintertime, too.

“Sometimes it just takes a voice to step up, take control."

Point of View

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily, gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said “you have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one.” You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. Make sure you control your temper the next time you are tempted to say something you will regret later. Author Unknown

Wednesday's you can often find me, or one of my fellow chefs in the community room at the Superstore in Wasaga Beach preparing "what's for dinner" It’s one, fun filled hour from 11 AM until noon where you can ask questions and see a wide variety of foods being prepared and cooked. The $10 cost for lunch, recipes and demo is offset with a $10 gift certificate that can be used to shop anywhere in the store. One of the dishes we cooked and served up recently was a mustard crusted Georgian bay Pickerel with wilted greens. Pickerel is one of the many gems found in Georgian Bay renowned for its clean white flesh, mild sweet flavour and small flake. The mustard and lemon work well with the natural sweetness of the fish, and the wilted Spinach compliments the presentation and provides a bit of crunch.4 Fresh water Pickerel Fillets (about 6 oz each)1 tbsp dijon mustard4 tsp lemon juice2 tsp olive oil½ tsp fresh thyme1/2 tsp ground black pepper4 tsp finely chopped garlic

12 oz spinach2 tsp roasted sunflower or pumpkin seeds1 tbsp finely chopped green onions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a bake sheet with tinfoil. Cut the pickerel into approximately 6 oz portions and pat dry with a paper towel. Place skin side down on the tinfoil.Stir together the mustard, 1 tsp of the lemon juice and 1/2 the oil, the thyme and 1/2 the pepper in a bowl. Spread misture over the surface of the fillets with a pastry brush, Bake in the center of the oven for about 10 minutes . Turn the oven to broil and cook until the fish is golden and flakes easily when prodded with a fork.Meanwhile, heat remaining tsp of oil in a frying pan over medium high heat and cook the garlic and remaining tsp of pepper 1 or 2 minutes, stirring constantly until garlic is tender. Stir in the Spinach and 1 tsp of the lemon juice and cook stirring until just barely wilted. Transfer to serving plates and top with the pickerel and sprinkle with sunflower seeds, onions and parsley.

The signs of post-holiday bulge are everywhere. There are all those shopping bags in bedrooms stuffed with holiday presents. Coat closets are jammed with puffer coats, muddy boots and vacuum cleaners. And in attics, hallways and garages, stacks of dusty plastic tubs hold many mystery items. It’s time for the home diet, an annual decluttering that can be even tougher to begin and sustain than going paleo or vegan. So strap on your fitness tracker and get moving. We consulted a few professional organizers for advice. Here are 10 great ways to jump-start your plan to declutter and get organized in the new year.1. Set goals. Be specific about what you want to accomplish and put the list in writing, says Laura Cambridge of Dynamic Organizing in London. Schedule dates on your calendar to tackle specific projects, whether the junk drawer or the toolbox.2. Identify tiny projects that will give you a lot of satisfaction. Pick a corner of a room, one shelf or one stack of papers to start. Work in small steps, doing what you can in about half an hour, says Leslie Nathan, a professional organizer whose company, Reclaim Your Life, is in Kitchener. Don’t try to tackle too much in one sitting.3. Compartmentalize as you go through your stuff. Take four boxes and label them “Trash,” “Storage,” “Donate” and “For Sale.” Use these for sorting as you declutter and then expedite bringing them to their final destinations, Nathan says.4. Get rid of things you know you don’t want or need — immediately. Since you won’t be sorry to let those things go, get them out of your house first. Diminishing visual clutter makes us feel less chaotic, says Janet Schiesl of Basic Organization in Markham.5. Use the one-in-one-out rule for books. For every book you bring into the house, let one book go. You can keep a box of books to donate to a library or another charity, Schiesl says.6. Share what you no longer need this winter. Many people could use a warm coat or hat. Now’s the time to go through your hall closet and give away kids’ coats that no longer fit and other unneeded outerwear, Cambridge says.7. Clear horizontal surfaces. Just seeing a cleared-off kitchen counter or dresser or desktop will motivate you to do more. Emptying surfaces makes a lasting impact you can see right away, Schiesl says.8. Schedule a home pickup date from a charity. Having a firm date will motivate you to move ahead quickly. And then you won’t have boxes and bags of donations clogging your closets or hallways, Cambridge says.9. Set up a 2015 memo box or file for each family member. Take action to control clutter in 2015. Use these boxes as a place to put things you want to save, such as concert tickets, birthday cards or cute notes from your kids, Cambridge says. This kind of stuff tends to stack up on a kitchen counter or bedside table. Now it can be part of a time capsule for the year.10. Invite people over. Having a party is a great motivator to clear items off tabletops, counters, floors, steps and coffee tables, Nathan says. If you make your space beautiful, you’ll see how satisfying it is to keep your home clutter-free and organized.

Mysterious Tunnel Found in Toronto

Now We Know Why It Was Built!

A man was dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there was a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He had been checking her out since he sat down, but lacked the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezed, and her glass eye came flying out of its socket towards the man. Reflexively, he reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back.'Oh my, I am so sorry,' the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. 'Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.' They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre followed by drinks... They talked, laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest. After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time. The next morning, she cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy was amazed. Everything had been so incredible! 'You know,' he said, 'you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?' 'No,' she replies ....You just happened to catch my eye.'

First and foremost be honest with yourself and your driving skills and second be realistic in judging the condition of your vehicle. Both are tested when you drive in the winter, especially this one. Below I have provided some safe driving tips many you may have seen before, but being reminded on how to be safe or safe practices is never a bad thing. 1)Never drink and drive (this includes any illegal drug you may be using) 2)If you take medication check to ensure it does not affect your driving ability3)Always wear your seat belt4)Know the road and weather conditions before you start your journey5)Slow down6)Leave more space between you and vehicle in front of you7)Don't “text” or use your cellular device while driving8)If using a GPS, remember it is only a driving aid, it should not replace common sense9)Ensure your motor vehicle is winter ready;a.Are all fluids topped up?b.Are windshield wipers in good shape or do you need new winter ones?c.Are your tires fit for winter driving? The Wasaga Community Theatre is presenting their Spring musical “The Wizard of Oz” scheduled from April 23rd to 26th at the RecPlex under the direction of Laura LaChapelle.Audition took place in January where a total of forty children came forward hoping to be part of this production. “Set up in groups of six kids I worked with them for half hour doing some improv, played a song such as 'Gangnam Style' and looking at who can dance, who can use their voice and who is listening to me,” said Laura LacChapelle, Director of The Wizard of Oz. Laura was looking for enthusiasm. “Whether a kid is shy or out going there is an inner part of them that is enthusiastic about performing. Sometime it's nice to cast the quiet ones where they come out of their shell.” A total cast of 10 adults and 25 kids from Elmvale, Collingwood, Creemore, Wasaga Beach and other areas will be participating. Age group for kids are 13 and under with the youngest being 4 years old.Rehearsals are well under way with the children working on Sundays and the main characters including Dorothy on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The story is about a young girl named “Dorothy” and her dog “Toto” in the Land of Oz after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a tornado. The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated.Laura recalls when she was younger how she loved the songs as well as playing all the characters. “This play it's about escaping another world all the colours and the sound, it's a story that all kids can relate to,” said Laura. The Wizard of Oz holds fond memories as it was the last play her entire family collaborated together. Her mother was the Stage Manager at the time and her Dad, Tony LaChapelle, was cast as Oz before his untimely passing 16 years ago. Laura was in University and was called upon to help with makeup for the leads. She even recalls opening night how the Producer brought “live” chicken. No stranger to theatre Laura is a backstage baby. “I adored watching my Dad on stage when I was a little girl and fell in love with acting.” She has over 30 years of experience working in Community Theatre as an Actress and Director both in Georgian Triangle Area and Toronto. She's a mother of five children who works as a Youth Drama Instructor for the town and directed eight youth productions over the last 20 years. So far she's enjoying her role as a Director. “I love having this leadership role enjoying how my artistic vision is coming through the actors and the collaboration because it really is a creation between how a cast member sees their role and my vision for the role. So far it's been a wonderful experience working with this cast,” exclaimed Laura. For information visit www.wasagacommunitytheatre.com.

PalmerstonApprox. 2,600. In Minto Township, Wellington County, and Wallace Township, Perth County, on the Maitland River and Hwy. 9 and County Roads 2 & 5, 70 km NW of Guelph. The first settler was Thomas McDowell, a native of Ireland, who arrived in 1854. The place was called Dryden when the post office opened in 1866. In 1872, at the suggestion of Township Reeve John McDermott, the community was renamed Palmerston to honour Lord Palmerston, prime minster of Great Britain. In 1855 the Ontario Vaccine Farm was established by local physician Dr. Alexander Stewart and was the first institution in Ontario to produce smallpox vaccine. In 1916 the operation was transferred to the University of Toronto.

Nick Spaling (born September 19, 1988 in Palmerston, Ontario) is a Canadian ice hockey player, currently playing for the

Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League. He previously played six

seasons with the Nashville Predators organization. A centre, he played his

three-year junior career with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey

League. His favourite players are Joe Sakic and Doug Gilmour, and he was a

fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs growing up.

Among North American skaters (non-goalie players) he was ranked 24th in the NHL Central Scouting final report for 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Spaling was selected in the second round 58th overall, by the Nashville Predators.Spaling signed an entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators in the summer of 2008. The contract is reported to be a 3-year, $1.95 million contract. He attended the Predators' training camp and was later reassigned to the team's AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. He began the 2008–09 AHL season playing for the Admirals wearing #13. After beginning the 2009–10 AHL season with Milwaukee, Spaling was recalled by Nashville. He played his first NHL game on December 15, 2009, and assisted on a goal by Ryan Jones in Nashville's 7–4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. On December 13, 2010, he scored his first NHL goal in a 5 - 0 win against the New York Islanders. On July 7, 2011, Spaling signed a two-year contract with the Nashville Predators. On June 27, 2014, as a restricted free agent, and at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft he was traded by the Predators along with Patric Hornqvist to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for James Neal. The Penguins avoided arbitration with Spaling on July 31, 2014 when they agreed on a 2-year contract worth $4.4 Million or $2.2 Million AAV. He scored his first goal with the Penguins on October 22, 2014 in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

We are knocking ourselves out these days trying find ways to crank up the heat on tourism and get our local businesses to grow and provide higher levels of service and additional services that all progressive communities enjoy. All of this while our local businesses today must shoulder levels of sales that require additional visitor dollars just to be able to stay in business and operate year round. It’s time to shift gears in our thinking and consider ourselves in the entertainment business rather than in the tourism business. This would result in including a lot more people in helping solve our economic sustainability puzzle for Wasaga Beach.Consider for a minute if we just took one slice out of the entertainment category and called it event tourism. Think of all the economic activity that goes into events, not alone the economic spinoffs. Think of all the dollars we could keep in our community and the jobs we could create if we got into the event business in a very local way. Take it one step further and think of expanding this event business to service other customers across South Georgian Bay if they knew they could one-stop-shop in Wasaga Beach to get everything they needed to run an event. What I am suggesting is that we look at the end to end process an event promoter has to manage to get a successful event off the ground. Being ingenious enough, we could launch and support a group of local Wasaga Beach businesses to service every requirement for an event and make it promoter friendly so that promoters would be lining up at our Town door to run events in Wasaga Beach. Our event support would get known for low costs, superior, full, local, fast and effective servicing and short turnarounds from application to launch date. We could take this one step further to offer most of these services to neighbouring communities to support additional events adding to the creation of employment and bringing more dollars to our town. The big benefits I see would be the rebranding of Wasaga Beach as the “event town” of Ontario featuring expert managed and run entertainment events to larger and repeat audiences while creating the conditions for re-investment in entertainment infrastructure and facilities that could truly support entertainment events during all four seasons. I’m talking a 20 year plan to building a sustainable economy for Wasaga Beach based on entertainment which means a broad range of experiences for our visitors and residents alike. We start small by creating this event machine across an array of local businesses to support our events and work towards selling our services outside of the Beach. This includes, entertainer agencies, rentals, large scale catering, innovative insurance solutions, policing and security solutions, marketing promotions and accommodation/meals/experience bundle packages, event project management, etc. As we create scale and scope by developing systems support and processes we will be able to do this better than any other community and then look at exporting this technology to other clients. We can build from this part of our economy and then look at more ways to support other entertainment ventures in our town. We could explore developing more venues like outdoor entertainment shows, recitals, large scale art exhibits, boat shows, assorted concerts, festivals, you name it, all in the name of providing a continuum of entertainment experiences for our visitors and our residents. If you want to hear more about this idea I can present to your organization or business group and tell you more about this approach.“Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at [email protected]. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, work and play.Gary is president of Critel Professional Services, chairs the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival and lives and works in Wasaga Beach.

Prime Minister Enjoying the Outdoors

At one time, the Town of Wasaga Beach was known as The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario. The young and exciting town had been known since the early 1900s as Canada’s Premier Beach Resort and welcomed millions of visitors throughout the summer months with its beautiful beach, meandering river and hotels, restaurants and bars to keep all happy. In the late 1960’s, the new found sport of snowmobiling was catching on and enthusiasts recognized that Wasaga Beach had it all to compliment the great new sport and was just a short and easy drive from the Toronto area.Wasaga Beach became famous for its year round hospitality and snowmobile dealers and related services sprung up all over town. The motels and other businesses embraced the new winter tourism opportunity. The Annual Winter Jamboree brought people into Wasaga Beach to watch exciting events that included Thrill Drivers jumping snowmobiles from ramp to ramp and torch light parades held on the frozen river.
