The giftof beadingDespite many efforts to shift attention to spiritual matters, the focus at this time of year is often on material goods — presents for all our loved ones, grocery lists for our holiday celebrations, and donations to favorite charities. All of that is important, of course, but amid all the shopping, organizing, and caring for others, we here at Bead&Button hope you will give the most important person in your life — yourself! — something really special: the gift of beading. It may not be scientifically proven, but from experi-ence we all know the therapeutic value of beading — how it can relax you and bring you a sense of joy and accomplishment. And you deserve the happy endor-phins beading generates! So enjoy these four projects: A quick pair of earrings (p. 11), two pendants (p. 7 and p. 15), and a component-based necklace-and-earrings set (p. 3), all of which underscore that even in short bursts, beading is a great way to spend your time. As 2017 comes to a close, we all want to thank you for reading Bead&Button magazine and spending your precious time with us. Happy beading and we’ll see you in 2018!

We here at

Bead&Button

hope you will

give the most

important person

in your life —

yourself! — the

gift of beading.

Create fl owers reminiscent of passion fruit blossoms by stitching twist and half moon beads together into fl oral medallions.

NECKLACETo pick up a half moon bead, place it on your work surface with the flat edge facing you and the curved edge facing away from you. Sew through the right-hand hole (RH) or the left-hand hole (LH), per the instructions.

Floral medallions1) On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, pick up a repeating pattern of a half moon bead (RH), a twist bead, an 110 seed bead, and a twist five times. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, sew through all of the beads again to form a ring (not shown in figure for clarity), and continue through the first half moon once more. Pull tight to make a snug ring of beads, and sew through the open hole of the same half moon (figure 1), changing direction. 2) Pick up a 4 mm pearl, and sew through the

open hole of the next half moon (figure 2, a–b). Repeat this stitch four times to complete the round (b–c). Retrace the thread path using tight tension (not shown in the figure for clarity). 3) Pick up three 110s, and sew through the 110 between the adjacent pair of twists (c–d). Pick up three 110s, and sew through the inner hole of the next half moon (d–e). Repeat these stitches four times, using tight tension so the beadwork domes, and sew through the other hole of the same half moon (e–f), changing direction. 4) Turn the beadwork over. Pick up five 110s, and sew through the outer hole of the next half moon (figure 3, a–b). Repeat this stitch four times (b–c), and retrace the thread path using tight tension. End the threads, and set the floral medallion aside. 5) Repeat steps 1–4 for a total of five medallions.

Connect the medallions1) On 2 yd. (1.8 m) of thread, sew through five 110s, a half moon, and five 110s on the back of a medallion (figure 4, a–b). Center the thread, and wrap the tail on a thread bobbin or piece of cardboard. 2) Pick up four 110s, skip the last three 110s you just sewed through, and sew back through the next 110 (b–c).3) Pick up five 110s, and sew back through the third bead picked up in step 2 (c–d). 4) Pick up five 110s, and sew back through the fourth bead picked up in step 3 (d–e). 5) Repeat step 4 (e–f) five times for a total of eight chevron stitches (f–g). 6) Pick up a 4 mm pearl and two 110s, and sew down through the last two beads you sewed through in the previous step and the pearl (g–h). 7) Pick up an 110, three twists, and an 110, and sew through the pearl and the next three 110s (h–i). 8) Pick up five 110s, and sew through the 110 that is closest to the pearl (i–j).9) Resume chevron stitch , repeating step 4 five times (j–k).10) Position a second floral medallion near the chevron band. Pick up three 110s, and sew down through the second 110 below a half moon on the back of the floral medallion. Pick up an 110, and sew down through the second bead below the one your thread exited at the start of this step (k–l). Pick up two 110s, and sew up through the adjacent five 110s on the medallion and the outer hole of the next half moon (l–m). Continue through the next five 110s, half moon, and five 110s.11) Repeat steps 2–10 to join a third medallion to the first two. Set the working thread aside.12) Unwind the tail thread from step 1, and work as in steps 2–10 twice to attach the remaining two medallions to the other side of the first medallion.

Neck straps1) With either thread, repeat steps 2–6 of “Connect the medallions” (figure 5, a–b).2) Work as in step 7 of “Connect the medal-lions,” but pick up two 110s, two twists, and two 110s (b–c).3) Work seven chevron chain stitches (c–d).4) Work as in steps 6–7 of “Connect the medal-

lions,” but pick up three 110s, one twist, and three 110s (d–e).5) Work seven chevron chain stitches (e–f).6) Work as in step 6 of “Connect the medal-lions” to add an unembellished pearl, and then sew up through the 110 above the pearl (f–g).7) Resume chevron stitch for 14 stitches or to the desired length.8) Repeat steps 1–7 on the other side of the centerpiece.

Clasp1) With either working thread, pick up four 110s, and sew down through the fourth bead in the previous stitch (figure 6, a–b). Pick up

an 110, skip the bead just picked up, and sew back through the last four beads along the thread path (b–c). Skipping the bead your thread is exiting , sew back through the next three beads along the thread path (c–d). 2) Pick up three 110s and eight 150 seed beads, and sew through the last 110 just added, forming a loop of 150s (figure 7, a–b). Pick up two 110s, and sew through the center three 110s as shown (b–c). Retrace the thread path through the loop, and end the thread.3) Open a jump ring, and attach it to the loop of 150s and half of the clasp.4) Repeat steps 1–3 on the other end.
