LyondellBasell’s Bayport Underwood plant manufactures several products including ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol, glycol ethers and glycol ether acetates. These products are used by our customers to make anti-freeze, brake fluid, dyes, paints, solvents, commercial cleaners and waxes. The products are also used as intermediate chemicals to produce polyester fibers, films and bottles. The facility employs over 200 workers.

Economic Impact

Our site serves as a significant economic engine for the surrounding areas which include La Porte, Shoreacres, Taylor Lake Village, El Lago, Pasadena and Clear Lake. For decades, LyondellBasell has offered good paying, stable jobs. Our workers live and shop in the area which means they purchase millions of dollars in local goods and services. The property taxes paid by LyondellBasell help support the local schools and government services.

Community Outreach

Plant management meets monthly with the Bay Area Citizen’s Advisory Panel (BAYCAP) to discuss community expectations and concerns. The company also has long-standing relationships with the La Porte and Clear Creek Independent School Districts, as well as their Education Foundations. Site volunteers are active in numerous organizations including the La Porte Neighborhood Center, Armand Bayou Nature Center and Rebuilding Together. Workers coordinate school supply drives and adopt families during the holidays. The complex also hosts a Senior Citizen Dinner in the fall for more than 100 guests from nearby nursing homes. Workers take part in Study Buddy and Pen Pals mentoring programs at Jenny Reid Elementary in La Porte ISD, coaching Pasadena ISD robotics program and hosting Clear Creek students for job shadowing.

The Bayport Underwood facility received the Industry of the Year award from the La Porte and Pasadena Chambers of Commerce. The site has been honored as Community Partner of the Year by the Bay Area Turning Point and recognized by Clear Creek ISD, the University of Houston-Clear Lake, the Houston Mayor’s Proud Partner award along with community service awards from the Galveston Bay Foundation, Adopt-A-Beach and Harris County Precinct 2.
