Even though I took on this task as a temporary assignment, I have enjoyed doing it and look forward to continuing into the future. Especially since I have some excellent assistance with 2 proof readers, and plenty of input from both volunteers and staff. Hint, hint; input appreciated from all. It is, and should be, your newsletter, one of the methods of communication that most everyone reads. Phone trees are long gone, emails are becoming passé, not everyone will text or subscribe to Facebook. For those few “hold-outs” not into electronic media, the printed version works just fine. Ideas for future publications are welcome. Whenever you have a brainstorm, please feel free to contact us.
FROM THE EDITOR
HEADS UP NOTICE:
Wednesday June 3 to Friday June 5 from 7 am to 5 pm
The Farm Area will be busy – Shell has scheduled to be on site for 3 work days, as part of their 5 year commitment. Please be safe and don’t walk into their activities.

Fellow Volunteers, I accepted the non-elected position of Interim Chair with the support of the volunteer board. I will not run for election of that position for 2016. I am not as well equipped for that role as Liz. I do not expect to do as good a job as Liz has done for the past 2 ½ years. I believe Liz’s part time role as Volunteer Coordinator as an ABNC employee will benefit the Nature Center more than her role as volunteer President. I will accept a role as the Vice Chair again for 2016 and continue to search for speakers for our volunteer meetings. Please think of good candidates for Chair for 2016 and share their names with the volunteer board. With the assistance of the experienced volunteer board members, including past chairs, I expect we will complete this year successfully. As a new retiree, I may have even assumed too many volunteer commitments since February, but sea turtle patrol ends in mid-July. I will move to seeking a speaker for our October meeting. A Clear Springs High School astronomy teacher, Ivanell George will speak on Astronomy at our August meeting. Our own Ed Craven will speak on the wolves of La Porte at our September meeting. Joe Bryan

VOLUNTEER MEETING MINUTES
May 14, 2015
Joe Bryan , acting Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:12 PM. A request for cardboard tubes from paper towel rolls for Ecocamp was made. Contact Heather or Kathy for more details if you have any to contribute. National Trails Day is June 6 and the ABNC has a full schedule. Hikes all day and the booked night hikes are full and volunteer help would be appreciated everywhere. Tom Kartrude said that the Rookery and gator watch tours are also sold out for the sixth and the coming weeks in general. Tom said that Mark Kramer had received the Terry Hershey Bayou Stewardship award on Tuesday for his life’s work on the Armand Bayou waterway. Previous winners include George H. W. Bush and George Mitchell. Tom said that the Armand Bayou is the best protected and best preserved bayou in the region and Mark should be justly proud of it. The State of the Lake was held in the Ginzbarg Educational Building by the Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce this evening and went well. Commissioner Morman, local mayors, Pasadena councilmen, other local leaders who are ABNC stakeholders were present and preservationists were present. We adjourned at 7:29 PM. Tom Scarsella Secretary

Did you know? From Wikipedia about our popular critter on site: The red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), also known as red-eared terrapin, is a semiaquatic turtle belonging to the family Emydidae. It is a subspecies of the pond slider. It is the most popular pet turtle in the United States and is also popular as a pet in the rest of the world, as, among other factors, it is easy to maintain. It has, therefore, become the most commonly traded turtle in the world. It is native to the southern United States and northern Mexico, but has become established in other places because of pet releases and has become an invasive species in many areas, where it outcompetes native species. The red-eared slider is included in the List of the world’s 100 most invasive species published by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

May Volunteer Picnic held inside again (since it was a rainy day)
Lew Hornung would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of condolences he received when Betty passed away. His family will be gathering for a memorial June 21 in Armand Bayou Nature Center’s auditorium from 12 noon to 5 pm. He would be most grateful to see old friends gather around.
