The newly released Holden Cruze Series II is a car transformed and the 1.4 litre SRi-V turbo model tested

is its star performer.

A fair few years ago now my brother bought a Holden Gemini at auction. He proudly arrived home announcing he had got “a hell of a lot of car for my money.” Twenty years on and it’s obvious that some things haven’t changed in the Holden stable – at least when it comes to what your dollar will get you in motoring metal.

The 2011 Series II Cruze has technol-ogy, fi nish and ride, all wrapped up in a dynamic, value-for-money package – and it still offers the same sense of size and spa-ciousness the Gemini did for its time.

Indeed, at fi rst glance you could mis-take the Cruze for a larger car, not quite a Commodore, but certainly part of the Holden stable. The Series II sees it now as a serious contender in the mid-size sedan range as buyers become more sensitive to fuel consumption and running costs in this uncertain motoring age.

Loaded with “goodies”The latest model is manufactured in

Australia, perhaps this has helped inject the Holden DNA even further into its looks, making it a defi nitive “mini Commodore” in profi le and overall appearance. Kitted out in its top of the line SRi-V fi nish with a smart body kit, streamlined alloys and plenty of interior extras, this Cruze is one smart looking sedan. It also has a deceiv-ingly large presence for a car that is pitching itself at the sector of the market up against the Mazda 3, Ford Focus and Mitsubishi Lancer.

There is every chance it will give all those companies reason to pause, given its sharp pricing. The Cruze range kicks off in its base CD version at $29,000 and tops out at $39,990 for the tested SRi-V model…and it comes with more extras than can be found on almost any Euro model at twice the price. These include leather seats, heated no less, and a premium audio system with a

10GB hard drive to load up all your favour-ite sounds and do away with having to plug in every time.

The Cruze’s audio technology also gives the driver the ability to “live pause” the radio, should you not want to miss some-thing you’ve been listening to. This is something I have not seen on any vehicle until now. The “goodie” list continues with Sat Nav (a feature that is worth a couple of thousand alone as an option for some manufacturers), rear park sensors and sensor key entry.

The dash set up is centred around the 7” colour screen, sensibly positioned within easy reach of the driver. This has an easily navigated menu to control all the key func-tions of heating, music and navigation, while the trip computer is nicely separated in its own screen set up right in front of the driver. The heated leather seats up front are very supportive and fi t well with a ride quality that is slightly on the fi rmer side, without being disconcerting, but does help deliver the Cruze directly and pointedly through corners.

Power to enjoyWhile all of these enhancements are an

undeniable pleasure, it is the power source in the new Cruze that is the real surprise. This model gets the gutsy Austrian-built 1.4 litre petrol turbo engine which thrives when

coupled to the six speed transmission. You might expect the smaller engine choice of the three models in the range (the other two are a 2.0 L diesel and a 1.8 L petrol engine) to have to work hard, but the turbo charger provides good pep to make a lively, enjoy-able engine. This is a gutsy engine.

Acceleration is a perfectly conducted affair, with smooth shifts between ratios and that sixth gear dropping the revs well down to 1600rpm at 100kph. With its claimed combined cycle fuel economy of 6.5L/100km, the Cruze has the reassurance of being a frugal drive that is still capable of fi nding its legs on the open road quickly and effi ciently.

The rated boot space of 445 litres puts the Cruze close to that of the Corolla and it would be more than enough for the average family’s weekend away gear. Rear leg space is good, reinforcing the feeling that you could get away quite happily with having the Cruze as your main family car.

The interior is well fi nished and very, very, quiet…possibly one of the quietest tests ever in fact. Several hours motoring would not leave you with white road noise in your head, rather – thanks to the excellent six speaker stereo and a very easy to follow Sat Nav system – you will be exactly where you want to be…safely, unstressed and perhaps even with some petrol still in the tank.

At 11 years old, Dyson Delahunty may not be old enough to drive on New Zealand roads, but he is giving

his racing parents a run for their money in a new off-road

racing competition.Dyson is the fi rst winner of a round of the

Hawkeswood Mining Kiwitruck Challenge – a new endurance race aimed at rising stars aged 7-15 as part of the Denny Woodhill 100 off-road race.

The young racer was up against six other drivers in a half-hour endurance course on a mixture of dirt, sand and gravel tracks. It was

the fi rst time he has competed in an endur-ance off-road race.

Kiwitrucks is based on the American trophykart racer category. The new trucks in the junior class, designed for the 8-11 year old category, feature a 9hp industrial single cylinder engine and centrifugal clutch transmission. The older class, class M, feature a 200cc motorcycle engine and fi ve speed gearbox.

Dyson got his passion for racing from his parents – driver Jason Delahunty and co-driver Tania – who race off-road in their Toyota Landcruiser.

The couple were not as successful as their son in the Woodhall 100, after an unlucky bounce “that felt like slow motion” breaking

the steering in the Landcruiser on the fi nal lap says Tania.

The couple haven’t given up hope though and are racing in the National series at Napier next month. As for Dyson, his next race is at the Taupo 1000 where he is com-peting in three half-hour races. His parents are also taking to the track, racing the full Taupo 1000 – covering 500km each day.

“Off-road racing is great – sometimes it can be rough, but it can be really fun,” says Tania.

“I get to sit back and navigate. Endurance races are more about keeping a bit fi t and keeping your fl uids up because it can get quite tiring and dusty on the tracks.”

Tania says she is not worried about the

sport being a dangerous pursuit for her 11-year-old son.

“Dyson has already rolled it and he didn’t hurt himself. We were out the back of work and he turned the corner too sharp – and Dyson just climbed out. The trucks are very strong with so much steel in them.”

With a new found passion for racing, Dyson is already looking ahead to when he gets a bit older.

“He loves it. He is already quite antsy that the driving age has been put up. I know he is thinking of moving up to bigger trucks when he gets older and is already telling us he wants another truck when he gets his licence.” By Laura Weaser
