That’s already where most of those container deliveries go,” Mr Davie said. The container lines will stop calling at Timaru in September. They had been delivering around 30,000 containers a year to Timaru and Lyttelton would probably get about 7000 to 10,000 of those containers, Mr Davie said. Even without that, business had been good for Lyttelton port over the last year, with container numbers “very strong”, he said. “They have been up by 16 to 17 percent in the last year. That’s a good signal for the wider market.” It was also a signal of what was happening in the rural sector, Mr Davie said. “The agricultural sector is the backbone of Christchurch and it’s the driver of the region’s economy. The economics of export are still what’s driving us.” Referring to the insurance issues the port was facing following the damage to its facilities sustained in the February 2011 earthquake, Mr Davie said resolving those was an “ongoing process”. The insurance claim was the largest ever made in the southern hemisphere. “We’re developing a plan on how we will rebuild the port and we’ll be putting it to the public.” Cruise ships would not be returning to the port in 2013, but making facilities available for them to berth at Lyttelton was also part of the development plans for the port, Mr Davie said. THE recent decision by container shipping companies Maersk and Hamburg Sud to stop using the port of Timaru is expected to bring some extra business to Lyttelton, Lyttelton Port Company CEO Peter Davie says.

“We don’t have accurate numbers but we expect we will get some additional cargo, though the majority will go to Port Chalmers.

That’s a good signal for the wider

market.” It was also a signal of what was happening in

the rural sector, Mr Davie said.“The agricultural sector is the backbone of

Christchurch and it’s the driver of the region’s economy. The economics of export are still what’s driving us.”

Referring to the insurance issues the port was facing following the damage to its facilities sustained in the February 2011 earthquake, Mr

Davie said resolving those was an “ongoing process”.

The insurance claim was the largest ever made in the southern hemisphere.

“We’re developing a plan on how we will rebuild the port and we’ll be putting it to the public.”

Getaway trip to Nelson relieves quake stress

Ready to hit the road: Students waiting to board the bus bound for Nelson.

Christine de Felice

FROSTY conditions didn’t dampen spirits on Monday last week when around 45 excited school students boarded a bus in Sumner to travel to Nelson.

The trip was organised by the Shoreline Youth Trust with the aim of giving the youngsters a chance to get away from earthquake-related stresses for a few days, trust administrator Ben Davis said.

The year 7, 8 and 9 students were from the Sumner, Redcliffs, Linwood and Woolston areas.

The travellers only had to pay for their bus

trip. Their five nights’ accommodation at the Bridge Valley camping ground in Wakefield, near Nelson, and other living expenses were funded through donations, totalling $20,000, from the Tindall Foundation and the Todd Foundation.

“Ritchies (the bus company) gave us a huge discount. I contacted several bus companies, but they were the only ones who agreed to help us out,” Mr Davis said.

On their holiday, the 32 boys and 13 girls took part in a range of activities including raft-building, go-karting, archery and shooting.

Applications for CressyTrust funds now openTHE Cressy Trust charitable trust is calling for applications for its latest round of funding.

The trust’s focus is on providing funds for assisting the elderly in the Lyttelton harbour basin. Since its establishment two years ago Cressy Trust has given approximately $17,500 towards the health and welfare needs of residents in the area.

The trust was established when Cressy House could no longer operate as a rest home under current building and health regulations.

After selling Cressy House and investing the proceeds, Cressy Trust made its first allocation of funds in September 2010.

Applications for the current round close on Monday, July 30. Application forms are available at the Lyttelton Medical Centre, Lyttelton Library, the Lyttelton Information Centre and from Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour.

Completed forms should be sent to Cressy Trust, PO Box 95, Lyttelton 8841.

If you’ve always dreamed of owning a property overlooking the water...now is a great time to make the move. Stunning homes and great building sites available - Talk to Joe.

Done and dusted: John and Jenny Turnbull with sons, Ben, left, and Matt, in front of the demolition site.

Fresh Start: Architect’s drawing of the new Casual & Country complex.

OWNERS of long-standing Ferrymead business Casual & Country, John and Jenny Turnbull, say they are “ready to go” with the building of their new premises, but there are a lot of “hoops and hurdles” to negotiate before construction can start.

“There are two lots of insurance – the rebuild and the building itself. And there’s the resource consent. That’s in with the council now,” Jenny Turnbull said.

Since May 2011, the business has been operating from a building adjacent to their former Ferry Road premises, which sustained some damage in the September 2010 earthquake and were significantly damaged in the February 2011 event.

“We were very lucky that this building was available,” Mrs Turnbull said.

Although the space is much smaller, and their café, which was part of the former shop, is now run from a portacom, the support of many of their regular customers has kept the business going, she said.

“We have customers who are living away from the area but have still kept coming.”

The Casual & Country building has since been demolished, and the Turnbulls will be rebuilding on the same site as they live locally and want to keep their business in Ferrymead. Their business has been operating for 21 years next month, and was the first retail business

in the Ferrymead area. It initially sold furniture only, but later extended its range into homewares. From initially operating out of one warehouse, the business expanded to take over the five warehouse spaces on the site.

The design of the new building has more of a residential than a commercial feel, Mrs Turnbull said.

“There were two reasons for that. One was that this area was settled early, so we wanted it to have more the feel of a home, not industrial. The second reason was we wanted a lightweight building that wouldn’t have a heavy footprint on the land. The building will have a steel frame,” Mrs Turnbull said.

The shop area is one and a half storeys, the café is one storey, and there is a two-storey, eight-unit office block behind.

“There has already been a lot of interest from people wanting to lease the office space. People want to be here (in Ferrymead),” Mrs Turnbull said.

The café would be separate from the shop area so it could be open outside retail hours and in the evening, she said.

The Turnbulls were unable to say when construction on the new building was expected to start.

“All the ducks have to be lined up first,” Mr Turnbull said.

Changes to bus routes will take effect later this year.

The draft Canterbury Regional Public Transport Plan is also currently open for public feedback. This plan sets out Environment Canterbury’s objectives and policies for delivering public transport in Canterbury, and provides the framework for the changes proposed in this document.

Feedback must be received by Friday 3 August 2012.

Feedback we receive about the proposals will be analysed, and we will make further changes if required.

Currently, to tra

vel from the city to Papanui, users have to look at m

any low frequency bus

timetables (ro

utes 8, 11, 12, 22) to see when the next bus departs. Between the city and Belfast

these will be replaced by one single high-frequency bus route. With buses every 10 or 15 minutes

during the day, travellin

Proposed ChangesEnvironment Canterbury is proposing to introduce a new, more efficient design of bus network. This will be a network that makes it easier to travel from anywhere-to-anywhere across the city as well as to the central city. High-frequency services will link major destinations across Christchurch, and these will be supported by local routes which connect at key suburban hubs.

These suburban hubs are places where bus routes will be timetabled to connect so passengers can change to other buses travelling to further destinations. Suburban hubs will be developed at major suburban centres (such as Papanui, Riccarton and Eastgate), and will be well lit, warm internal spaces. Initially these may be on-street but eventually some hubs will be upgraded to high quality off-street bus terminals.

The first stage proposes changes to services that currently operate to the north and south of the city.

Suburbs affected include (but are not limited to) Cashmere, Beckenham, Barrington, St Martins, Sydenham, Merivale, St Albans, Bryndwr, Papanui, Casebrook, Redwood, Belfast, and the Waimakariri District.

Bus routes 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 22, 46, 90, and 92, 912 and 913 will be replaced with new services. Routes 28 and 60, while not changing, are also included in this proposal as we will be extending these routes to additional destinations.

Central to the proposal is the introduction of a new high-frequency service, route 1 from Belfast to Princess Margaret Hospital, which makes full use of bus lanes to provide a high quality reliable service.

The map overleaf shows the proposed new bus routes to take effect in late 2012.

This is the first stage of implementation of this network design across Greater Christchurch. Following further public consultation, it is expected that the rest of the Christchurch bus network will be redeveloped in the future.

Peak times are approx 7am - 9am

and 3pm – 6pm weekdays

Where people travel in Christchurch has changed.More people are now working in the suburbs, and using their local facilities, so while retaining good transport links to the central city is important, we need to reflect this change.

Fewer passengers are now using the buses because our current services don’t meet their needs. We need to make changes to encourage more bus usage, increase our financial viability and better reflect the ‘new’ Christchurch.

New proposed routes will bring more buses to key suburban locations, such as Papanui and Barrington. Although not all services will continue to travel via the city centre, good connections will be provided between services.

Lyttelton prostitution issuesLetters to the editor

We want your letters

If you have a letter, email it to [email protected] limit: 250 words.

Please include your address and a daytime telephone contact number.

CITY Councillor Claudia Reid’s letter regarding the Council’s proposed legislation to restrict Lyttelton brothel sites to a certain area has me wondering whether the present port security fencing will limit associated prostitution activity that has long been a factor on some ships moored at the wharves.

One incident I recall happened when I parked by a ship when stopping to look at the Spirit of Adventure sailing vessel nearby. An obviously foreign, middle-aged seaman (not an Asian) was seated alone on the ship by the top of the gangway boarding ramp when I left my car. Returning to the car about two minutes later to collect my camera, the scene had changed. The seaman had disappeared and a young, bedraggled-looking woman was stepping onto the wharf from the same gangway.

No doubt other readers of your newspaper could say much about what they have seen

over the years at Lyttelton. It appeared at times that some of the now demolished hotels were part of the “private entertainment” picture in Lyttelton also.

THE Richmond Hill Ferrymead Golf Club 2012 AGM will probably be the most important meet-ing in the club’s 102-year history, president Terry Thin says.

“We want as many members as possible to at-tend with an open invitation to intending mem-bers. We wish to elect a committee to organise playing for our many trophies, which date back to 1910,” Mr Thin said.

The earthquakes had obviously disrupted peo-ples’ lives and golf has suffered as a consequence,

he said.“Eventually things will get back to normal and

golfers back to their old routine playing when they can. Ferrymead is a very good complex with a driving range, miniature golf, putting area, pro shop, bar, and importantly a nine-hole golf course with two par four holes. This enables us to be handicapped and a member of Canterbury Golf.”

The AGM will be held in the conference room at Ferrymead Golf complex, on Saturday July 28, starting at 11am.

AGM most important in club’s history

SIXTY-THrEE businesses took part in the annual Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for Cholmondely, raising $19,326, which was a very good result, fundraising manager Sarah Barrer says.

“The funds will be used to pay to operate Cholmondeley, including food, power, children’s activities and transport costs.”

One of the organisations taking part, the care team Child, Youth and Family from the Ministry of Social Development’s Papanui office, raised $200.

“Cholmondeley is an important part of a rebuilt Christchurch and the level of support

staff have shown is exciting. Child, Youth and Family working in partnership with other services and the community are all in the business of the wellbeing of children,” manager of the care team Nicola Hastie said.

Cholmondeley general manager Shane Murdoch, above left, accepted the cheque from Foster Bear and Ms Hastie at the Cholmondeley site earlier this month. As well as the $200, three kowhai trees were donated to “represent new life and the rebuild of Cholmondeley” by Adele Sherry, social worker care team, and organiser of the morning tea.

Children show model-making skills

Spencer Hayes with his Christ Church Cathedral made model. Katie Highgate, Lucy Wehi and Alice Wehi

MORE than 150 people turned up on a wet Sunday morning, with some even travelling across town to make sure they didn’t miss the annual Rotary Lego contest at the Sumner Community Centre. Earthquake refugee families came from as far away as Belfast and Swannanoa.

Several families have attended all the contests over the four years Ferrymead Rotary has organised the event.

Children from 11 schools participated in the fun-filled, creative event, which took place on July 1.

They made models in the contest or brought models they had made at home. They made models as varied as rockets and animals in just 15 minutes, while the models they had made at home included whole villages, complicated trucks with working parts and one of the broken Christ Church Cathedral.

The children enjoyed playing with the Lego bricks and looked forward to the prize giving. The prizes were donated by Ferrymead Rotary.

“It is very encouraging to see so many children return year after year and the number of entries increasing,” Ferrymead Rotary president Jan Boustead said.

“The families have been so supportive that we hope to keep it as an annual event.”

Drivers still offending, but overall crime downI AM surprised at the number of residents who are not wearing seatbelts, still speeding through the restricted areas where there is severe damage to the roads and even talking on their cell phones while driving. With all the publicity, I was hoping we would see a reduction in this type of offending. At the end of the day, it’s the injuries/deaths caused by inattention or speed that clog up the hospitals, and the follow-on is that people who are sick go further back in the queue.

If you are stopped for committing a traffic offence and get a fine, remember this: there is only one person to blame. Yep, that’s right - you.

The good news is that as an area we have had a reduction in overall crime in the past year. This is great, and some of it can be attributed to you as residents reporting suspicious persons or crime happening at the time. My guys like nothing more than catching the lowlife thieves and burglars, and all the help we get from the community makes

our job easier.Remember, if a crime is happening, we want

to know about it. Call the Police on 111 if it’s happening at the time. The quicker we know about it the more chance we have of catching the criminals.

Our local crime watch is gathering more members and this has allowed them to patrol Lyttelton and the bays on a more regular basis. Great stuff. Keep up the good work.

It was great to see the community awards to various residents and our local volunteer fire and ambulance service recently. It shows how important our volunteers are, and the effort they put into our community is fantastic. Keep up the great work.

That’s it from me. Keep safe.

Support always appreciatedPeter Dawson

THE St John Annual Appeal is always a busy time across New Zealand for our organisation. Banks Peninsula Area Committee was part of the appeal, with collectors present at the Lyttelton Festival of Lights, where they collected $1931. At the Farmers’ Market later that week, our team collected $1571.

The support of the public is always appreciated and we’d like to thank everyone who donated to us for their support. Your donations will go towards St John services in your community.

St John receives support from so many people and in a great variety of ways.

We’d especially like to acknowledge the support that St John in Banks Peninsula is receiving from Mike Shine of Ray White Real Estate Lyttelton.

Mike has pledged a percentage of his commissions from property sales in the Lyttelton Harbour basin to St John Banks Peninsula area committee. This is a significant

sponsorship offer and has already resulted in valuable donations to us.

St John is a unique part of the Kiwi way of life. The energy and generosity of our supporters allows us to provide health and community services to every corner of Banks Peninsula.

It is through the support of people like Mike, those who generously donated via our bucket collections, those who are members of the Supporter Scheme and everyone who donates to us that St John can continue to provide services like the Ambulance Service, which operates 24/7 and helps around 400,000 New Zealanders every year, and the Youth programme.

Thanks to all those who have supported us so far this year and to those who donated to St John during the Annual Appeal.

Peter Dawson is the chair of St John Banks Peninsula.

ALL going to plan, the Lyttelton branch of the BNZ will move into its new London Street premises on Monday July 30.

The ground floor of 56 London Street, the former home of an old Lyttelton bakery and until recently a private residence, has been fully renovated and will house the new Lyttelton BNZ Bank.

For over a year the team of Kelly Eathorne, Donna Shine and Trish Royds has been working out of a portacom, known as BNZ ’Lyttel’ Bank, or the BNZ Port-A-Com Bank.

“The move can’t come soon enough,” the team

members said. Banking hours will return to normal – 9am to

4.30pm, a part-time banking advisor will join the team and Lyttelton will get its long-awaited 24-hour automatic teller machine again, Ms Shine said.

The BNZ Port-A-Com bank will not disappear altogether. It was built as a purpose-built cabin for events for the BNZ in general. It was initially used for the rowing tournament at Lake Karapiro, before being moved to Lyttelton following the earthquakes, and it will now go back to supporting events and special occasions across the country.

Lyttelton bank to move to new premises

THE closures of key buildings and facilities in the Akaroa area post-earthquakes have caused frustration for the area’s residents.

Buildings owned by the Christchurch City Council, including the council’s Akaroa service centre, information centre and postal centre, whose operations were relocated in other buildings and portacoms, as well as the Gaiety and the Akaroa Museum, have been closed due to earthquake risks.

The Banks Peninsula War Memorial is fenced off and needs to be repaired, with fundraising underway.

Akaroa Wairewa Community Board chairwoman Pam Richardson said there was frustration about the closures and the community was asking about the lack of progress and wondering what would be closed next.

“The council has a huge number of buildings and issues and we have to work alongside the council to get the best outcomes. The important community facilities are listed as top priority in the repair process.”

However, she said they had to look at what had been achieved.

“The Medical Centre was a part of the hospital and with the closure of the hospital just prior to Christmas the Medical Centre was closed also. In a few days the Canterbury District Health Board relocated and everything was up and running a few days later.”

She said the Fisherman’s Rest, a historic covered seat, has been repaired and painted and the Pigeon Bay War Memorial has been repaired and continued to look out to the Kaikoura mountains.

Characters abound at the marketMOUNT Pleasant Farmers Market continues to thrive on McCormacks Bay Road just off the estuary. Architects are working on the plans for the new community centre and the new temporary centre is open and available for use and bookings. There is an air of excitement and hope as the rebuild and local repairs begin. The sun and warmth gives the feeling of spring in the air and brings smiles to people’s faces. Lorna is visiting family in Europe and Kevin and Glenda have taken their first week off in over a year.

Marty is ever-present with witty posters and T-shirts and is one of the true characters of Mount Pleasant, always happy to help and lend a hand. His new Poha range is spectacular. Apples and pears from Cam’s family farm in Motueka are very popular and Jen’s Goan fish cakes and curry sauces are great on the cold mornings. Volcano’s spectacular broccoli and blue cheese soup is always popular and a great winter warmer. Volcano’s dips and olives nearly always sell out. Try the giant blue

cheese stuffed olives or the Sicilian olives, great with wine or Raindog beer. Lillies are always popular and fragrant in the home. Janice’s beautiful homemade fudge is divine. Rick is planting thousands of lettuces.

Best buys:

Cabbage, silver beet, Motueka apple, pear and ginger juice. Lettuces available but in limited quantities, so get in quick.

Kale chipsTry this quick and easy recipe for low-cost

super-food chips that will keep the whole family happy.

Take a bunch of kale, remove the centre stalk and rip the curly kale into pieces about 3cm square, wash and pat dry. Place on a baking tray and lightly spray with olive or similar light vegetable oil. Place in a preheated oven 140 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes and voilà – chips that are delicious and extremely healthy. This is a great way to get the kids to eat their

greens. Experiment with chilli, pepper, smoked paprika, rosemary and thyme seasonings.

Trader of the week

Breads of Europe make quality artisan-style breads baked with love and passion. The bread is baked from scratch, fresh each day and free from all the nasties we prefer to avoid. They do not use pre-mixes, emulsifiers, preservatives or additives and consequently, their breads taste awesome. I recommend the bagels, the ciabatta, rye and multi-grain breads but they are all great. Try the Danish, too, with a hot latte. Look for Deb’s smiling face.

LyTTeLTON resident Wendy McKay has stepped up to become the community coordinator of Lyttelton Community House as a way of giving back to the community that gave her so much.

Growing up in the Waikato, Mrs McKay was surrounded by her extended family. When she moved to Christchurch, the family connection was what she missed most.

“I never really had any connection with anybody,” Mrs McKay said.

But in 1978, when she and her husband moved to Lyttelton, that all changed.

“All of a sudden I found in this little community that those connections had come back to me. It felt like I finally found the family I had missed.”

While it was the sea that brought them to Lyttelton, it is the people who have kept the McKays here.

“There was this wonderful sense of belonging. It kind of captures you really.”

Mrs McKay worked at the supermarket before having her children.

She then got involved with the Board of Trustees at Lyttelton West School in the 1980s and was an inaugural member of the first Banks Peninsula community board.

“Some of the first things I ever did was visiting the old people in the cottages.

“It became obvious to me that the cottages weren’t so good. You went in there and wallpaper was falling off the walls. I worked with the council to get it all upgraded,” Mrs McKay said.

She only served on the community board for one term.

“I didn’t want to be a politician. I enjoyed serving but I wasn’t politically motivated. I didn’t really enjoy being in the limelight.”

Since then, Mrs McKay has worked at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre where she helped organise the women’s suffrage centennial celebrations and been involved with organising Matariki celebrations among other things.

As the Lyttelton community coordinator, she is looking forward to what’s to come in the years ahead.

“We’re looking at a number of different options to offer the community like computer courses. There are also people sitting in houses that are damaged and I can see us getting into an advocacy role as things progress.

“We’re proactive in some ways but reactive in others. We just don’t know from day to day what’s going to come through that door.”

Estuary on the moveCommunity groups / residents’ groups

SINCE the earthquake sequence that started from September 2010 many of us have been concerned about the condition and the future of the Avon Heathcote Ihutai Estuary. We wonder what has happened to water quality, the bed, the channels and the bird life, and we ponder what it means for estuary health to have parts of it suddenly raised and others lowered by hundreds of millimetres. It is easy to forget that our estuary is in some respects a temporary phenomenon, seismic activity or not.

I’ve just finished reading about the history of Ihutai in a well-researched but out-of-print book called The

Estuary: where our rivers meet the sea, which was published by Christchurch City Council in 1992. Some 9000 years ago it would have required a hike of several kilometres east to find the coastline and the sea, whereas some 6500 years ago a morning walk along the beach might have taken you through areas now known as

Beckenham, Riccarton and Fendalton. One thousand years ago the current estuary area would have been more like a harbour and the

estuary would have been confined to a narrow, shallow bay to the north terminating at what is now Travis Swamp.

These variations are due to climate change and global warming that predate human influences.

The present estuary, which is about 450 years old, sits on top of older estuaries that have been sandwiched between other layers of floodplain, forest, swamp and marine sediments over the past two million years. Before the earthquakes, a number of us were thinking about the possible effects of a predicted sea level rise due to elevated carbon emissions. But if the geological record is anything to go by, the time will come when things will be high and dry around these parts once again.

Either way we should enjoy and look after Ihutai while it is here. Continuing changes: The Estuary has moved throughout the years.

Holiday time on the hillJocelyn Papprill

WITH the local school closed for the holidays, Mt Pleasant has been a relatively quiet suburb, with many families having taken the opportunity to head away either to the ski fields or to warmer climes. The weather has provided a varied ambience, with everything from the mystique of the all-encompassing mist to the bright crispness of a perfect winter’s day. The views from the hill on such days are sublime and do much to ease post-quake frustrations!

A number of walking tracks on the hill are open and offer a good workout as well as an opportunity to catch up with other locals also out exercising. On one recent walk down the track off Craigieburn Lane I chanced upon a council worker doing weed control work to keep the track clear. This track offers pathways up to Law Lane or across to Avery Place or down to McCormacks Bay Rd and could tolerate more frequent use.

Just up from the school, the damaged shops on Major Hornbrook Road are now completely demolished and a tidy job the company has done, too. We look forward to learning what plans the owner of the property has on the drawing board as it would be great for our community to have new, purpose-built retail outlets or office facilities to bring activity to the area.

The previous cafe was popular with many residents, particularly for parents waiting for their children at the end a school day. Another of the shops that was there prior to the quakes

was a dairy, which struggled to attract the necessary customer base but, like the cafe, provided a service that was very useful for some. Whatever businesses are established in new premises there, they will need to be carefully designed and marketed to ensure they are profitable for the leasee as well as valuable to the community.

As a community organisation, the Mt Pleasant Residents’ Association is keen to see a range of facilities and services available across our hill suburb. We will soon be undertaking a survey of residents about what they would like to see in a new community facility and what other ideas they envisage for our suburb. The architects we have appointed will endeavour to incorporate many of the ideas into a design for our new centre. Residents will be able to participate in this survey either online or by completing a paper version; we hope everyone will take part over the next month or so.

Finally, our association, along with others in the coastal cluster network, has collated information about insurance issues and is working to support you in these often fraught processes. For more information please visit coastalhillscluster.org or pop into our temporary community centre on McCormack’s Bay Rd. Linda Rutland is based there Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am to 3pm.

Jocelyn Papprill is the chair of the Mt Pleasant Residents Association.

From the Lions’ Den: Good news timeMary Jamieson

GOOD news everyone. The shortest day has passed and now the days will start to get a bit longer.

Lyttelton Lions have been busy this month checking on some of the elderly in town and doing a few odd jobs here and there.

We prepared a detailed submission on the brothel by-laws and sent it to Council. We feel that as long as the businesses are discreet we can cope. We do not want brothels on ground-floor level in London Street as this is our main street and is a commercial and residential mix.

We are pleased that a joint venture between Christchurch Lions and the Christchurch City Council will see a transitional community facility built in Colombo Street, St Albans on the site of the now demolished St Albans Resource Centre. The near-new relocatable building will provide meeting space for local

community groups and some recreational activities. The funding has come from the Lions Earthquake Fund, which was set up with donations from New Zealand and other

countries. We are proud to be part of the Lions Christchurch family and

would love to see a similar facility in Lyttelton!

Congratulations to the staff and board of the Lyttelton Community

Centre on their successful fundraising. Thousands of dollars were raised from

ticket sales for the Celia Lashlie talk and the auction. The Youth Centre will be able to provide Lyttelton with more programmes and activities. We were pleased to be one of the sponsors of the night.

If you are interested in the work of Lions or know someone who needs some help please contact Dave Evans on 379 6675 or Mary Jamieson on 328 8523.

Keep warm.

SCOTTISH-born senior skipper for Black Cat Cruises in Akaroa, Hamish Crosbie’s first trip to New Zealand was in 2003.

When he was a child, he says, his mother had talked about two places in the world she would love to visit – Patagonia and New Zealand. A trip to the Antipodes was never an option for his family so when he finished university he booked a flight to Auckland on a quest for adventure.

Boats were his thing – he first took the helm at aged 10 for about two minutes under the supervision of the skipper, and while he can’t claim he was hooked on boats at this point it was an experience Hamish certainly remembers. Finding a crew job around Auckland was tough, however, but he found work in Paihia at a dolphin swimming company – and met the girl of his

dreams. He worked in Paihia for three months and then the two set off to travel the country, their holiday including a trip on the Black Cat in Lyttelton to see Hectors dolphins.

After returning to Scotland for a job Hamish had secured, the couple found New Zealand’s magnetism became too much for them and less than a year later they emigrated.

The Bay of Islands was their first home in New Zealand, but in September 2005 Hamish sent an email to Black Cat, introducing himself, outlining some of his achievements and including references. It was certainly not a conventional job application but next thing he received a phone call from Black Cat Cruises. The following month he started working for the company in Akaroa as a dolphin swim guide.

Seven years later, he is the senior skipper and there has been no looking back.

Hamish says a big part of his life has been about getting outside and enjoying what is around and that’s one reason he loves New Zealand. It is kind of like a country-sized adventure playground, he says. Danielle and Hamish travel quite a lot and often play tour guide for friends and family who come to visit.

For Hamish one of the striking things about New Zealand is that it has so many different environments in quite a compact space. From the beaches of the Coramandel to the rugged peaks of the Southern Alps, there are places here for everyone to enjoy, he says. You never have to travel too far for a change of scene!

While Akaroa is quite a remote spot he loves it. A big part of that is his ‘office’ – one of the most stunning pieces of coast in the country

where he gets to play with boats and watch amazing wildlife.

He says it is impossible to compare Scotland and the UK to New Zealand and both places are special to him for different reasons. Both are beautiful countries with friendly locals. Scotland was where he grew up. Family and friends remain and he misses them. He misses some familiar sights and sounds – his ears always prick up at the sound of a Scottish accent.

New Zealand is where he has felt most settled and has spent more time honing who he is.

As for rugby loyalty, that’s easy he says – it’s All Blacks all the way.

Hamish is also a qualified fire fighter with the local volunteer fire brigade as well as a volunteer on the St John Ambulance.

Danielle works at the Akaroa BNZ.

Settled in Akaroa: Hamish Crosbie and Danielle on board the Black Cat.

L ITTLE R IVER GALLERY

Josh Bashford BioBorn in 1989, of Pakeha and Samoan decent, Little River local Joshua Bashford is a keen artist and sportsman. He gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Canterbury in 2011, and is currently enrolled in postgraduate study. In 2008 he was awarded a College of Arts Pacific Scholarship to study Fine Arts and as a consequence of his achievements to date, Bashford has recently been awarded a College of Arts Pacific Honours Scholarship to pursue his formal art training further. It was during Fatu Feu’u recent stint as the Artist in Residence at the Macmillian Brown Centre for Pacific Studies that Feu’u has become a good friend and mentor to Bashford hence the title of the show, Island Brothers.

“My work explores mark making and its ability to portray themes such as faith, family and landscape. Printmaking techniques such as lithography and woodcut allow me to express myself through these marks. I work from a variety of sources including family photographs, internet images and pictures found in art books and magazines. These images are then taken and manipulated resulting in abstracted imagery which emerges and disappears into the canvas creating a pushing and pulling of symbols, figures and faces.

These recent works have been made in a much more meditative way than earlier works

An exhibition by Josh Bashford & Fatu Feu’u

of mine. They are heavily inspired by the landscape that I pass through on the drive to and from Little River and Christchurch. As I round the many bends in the road I am often in awe of the changes of light and movement especially around the waters of lakes Forsyth and Ellesmere. I have grown up by these lakes, fishing in the local river and I have spent hours waiting, watching, miles away in thought”

Fatu Feu’u BioBorn in Samoa in 1946, Fatu Feu’u settled in New Zealand in 1966. A senior contemporary artist, Feu’u is an adept painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer and poet. He is also considered as both a leader and mentor within the Pacific arts community in New Zealand, Feu’u is the only Pacific Island artist to receive an ONZM for his services to Pacific art in New Zealand.

Feu’u has exhibited regularly both nationally and internationally. His work is held in major collections such as the National Gallery, Brisbane: Auckland City Art Gallery; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington; and Waikato Museum of Art and History, Hamilton.

Island Brothers runs from 14 July to 8 August 2012 at the Little River Gallery.

AUCTION

TWO Christchurch graffiti artists have transformed the exterior of a law office that has relocated to the Addington area.

Anderson Lloyd Lawyers relocated to the area after they were evacuated from their offices in the Clarendon Towers following last February’s earthquake.

In collaboration with Art & Industry Biennial Trust, artists Rene Bell and Tobin Hogg spent three days completing the artwork that reflected the central city many people remember including the ChristChurch Cathedral, the Avon River, the trams and Caffé Roma.

Anderson Lloyd Lawyers partner Jen Crawford said the mural had attracted a lot of interest from locals.

“The earthquakes have led to fresh thinking about how you go about your business in Christchurch. Our mural has become something of a talking point – who would have thought a law firm would depict their brand using graffiti?”

“The fantastic mural has removed the starkness of our building, but kept the edginess.”

Ms Crawford said while Anderson Lloyd was committed to returning to the central city in the future the firm wanted to create an inspiring space in the meantime.

“We also wanted to express the new way of doing business in Christchurch.”

The artwork also recognised some of the key client projects that Anderson Lloyd had been involved with in Canterbury, such as the permanent public artworks Art & Industry Biennial Trust has produced for the CBD, Clearwater Resort, developments in the Waipara winegrowing region and several freshwater resource management projects.

“The mural is an opportunity to reflect on our company’s history and future in Canterbury, and through our relationship with Art & Industry Biennial Trust we have also been able to support local artists and give something back,” said Ms Crawford.

Indian Sumner in the heart of Sumner village is delighted to have expanded their premises by taking over the

building next door, which was previously Red Fish Blue Fish.

“We have had our eye on it for 13 years,” says owner Vanta.

“I am very happy we have had this opportunity to change the interior between the two rooms. We can now seat about 50 people comfortably in our new space.”

With Vanta’s flair for Indian art and decoration, the rooms are very inviting, warm and cosy. They also have a banquet room at the back of the restaurant which can accommodate large functions and

celebrations.Host and manager Aminder Pal (AP) is

delighted to be able to serve you deliciously authentic Indian dishes. AP comes from Punjab and has had many years’ experience working with top-notch hotels like the Shangri-La, Oberoi Hotels and Radisson Hotel in Delhi.

“Masala” is the Hindi and Punjabi word for spices deliciously blended in their exotic dishes at Indian Sumner and Indian Ocean.

The ambience, incense, charm and welcoming atmosphere set these restaurants apart, along with their succulent and tender morsels of lamb, chicken and seafood cuisine, marinated in various Indian spices and served for your enjoyment.

It was 13 years ago, with the increasing demand for authentic ethnic foods, which prompted owners Vanta and Dilip to create the first of these boutique-type venues, Indian Sumner, with the vision of keeping it small and inviting.

“We wanted to give people the opportunity to savour our wide range of decadent meals and enjoy a delightful experience,” says Vanta.

“We congratulate Indian Ocean’s sixth year anniversary and are delighted to offer a special deal of dining in at takeaway prices on Mondays and Tuesdays (for a limited time only). This is an excellent treat for families.

You will find fast, friendly service with the best Indian curries and naans with classic Indian flavours at Indian Sumner, 11 Wakefield Ave, Sumner. Phone: (03)326 4777. Also at Indian Ocean, The Estuary, 23 Humphreys Drive, Ferrymead. Phone: (03) 384-7000.

Putting your feet firstTreating painful feet and restoring them

to healthy condition is the role of the podiatrist, the health specialist whose

total focus is feet, as is aptly conveyed by Feet First Podiatry.

Feet First Podiatry, established in 2002 by Charlotte Russell, who set up her original practice Charlotte Russell Podiatry in 1985, has been helping people in the Christchurch area with a wide range of foot problems for over 25 years. The main Feet First clinic is located at 37 Main South Road, Upper Riccarton, with branches operating out of health premises at Darfield, Dallington, Waltham and Redcliffs.

Charlotte and her colleagues Laura Pritchard and Andrew Hawkey provide professional friendly services for diabetic foot care, children’s foot problems, sports injuries, minor surgical procedures for ingrown toenails, prescription orthoses, as well as all routine foot care requirements. They are all NZ-registered and members of their professional representative group, Podiatry NZ.

Charlotte has a particular interest in working with people with diabetes as they often develop complications associated with diabetes such as poor circulation and loss of feeling in the feet and legs, which can unfortunately result in ulcers or even amputation.

As well as carrying the weight of our body, our feet must also absorb increased impact and strain as we carry out our daily activities. Foot problems can occur if people are required to stand for long periods of time with their work, such as hairdressers and retail assistants, or subjected to extra

stress associated with sporting activities, and they may benefit from wearing an orthotic.

Feet First Podiatry provides a selection of orthotics and can recommend and advise for every situation. Older people who are active may also need good footwear and orthotic support to ensure they can remain active and healthy without experiencing foot pain. Feet First Podiatry carries the Propet brand of footwear for people who require extra depth, width or velcro fastening options, ideal for those with arthritis or diabetes, and a new range of stylish shoes from Kubo will be in stock at the beginning of August, providing an alternative choice for those who struggle to find a shoe that can fit an orthotic and still look good. They also carry a small range of foot care products for ongoing management at home.

For all your foot care requirements and footwear advice, give Feet First Podiatry a call any day Monday to Friday on 03 348 7910 to make an appointment or for information about any other Feet First Podiatry clinics, or visit our website www.feetfirst.co.nz. Our friendly staff are always more than willing to help with any enquiries.

GIVE yourself a gift by taking time to walk in nature – a gift of space, calm and love.

Focus on each thing that pops into your vision before shifting to the next.

Wonder at the shape of things, the colours, the magic of how nature is. Stop and look at the detail of the tree, or the flower, or the leaf, or the ground, or the river, or the beach.

Look at the sky. Watch the clouds and look at the changing shapes. Listen to the birds, and wonder. How do such small things make those sounds? How does the sound make you feel?

Listen to the sound of the river or the sea. Does it drown out the thoughts in your head?

Does it make your worries seem insignificant?
