A fuming Heathcote Valley con-tractor has been left with around $50,000 worth of damage after boy racers smashed up four of his cars in a street racing crash outside his house.

During a drag race along Port Hills Rd, a boy racer lost con-trol of his car, crashed through a neighbours fence, and careered into Steve Whites garage.

Two of his cars were written off in the subsequent pile up, while another two classic cars,

including a Porsche 924, were also damaged.

He awoke at around 11.30pm on Friday night to an almighty crash.

The car has come through my neighbours fence, hit my busi-ness truck, which was pushed

into my business car, which then smashed a hole in the garage and damaged a classic car an Audi its then bounced off that and smashed into my hedge and the back of my Porsche 924, he told the Bay Harbour News.

From page 1Mr White has estimated

the damage is worth between $40,000 and $50,000. Insur-ance will only cover $20,000 of that.

My truck is fully insured, but the other cars are third party so theres no payout because I wasnt using them on the road, he said.

Whats worse is because my house was structurally damaged in the earthquakes, my insur-ance company cancelled my in-surance on that too.

Im absolutely gutted. The emotional and financial loss Ive had to endure is massive, but having to start from scratch is the worst thing.

The battered boy racers BMW, lacking a warrant of fitness, was ditched and was still outside Mr Whites house yesterday. Police are investigating.

Mr White, who is a self-em-ployed contractor who main-tains hedges and gardens, said boy racers in the Heathcote Val-ley kept him awake most Friday nights.

Its been brewing for awhile, especially over the past few months . . . they congregate in the Christchurch Gondola car park then race down the hill at night, he said.

For Mr White, who has lived in his home for 15 years, Friday night was all too familiar.

Ten years ago, a car lost con-

trol on the roundabout and crashed into his garage.

Community Constable Dion Kitchin said boy racer troubles in the Heathcote Valley were no worse than other Christchurch suburbs.

It comes and goes, but its like anywhere . . . theyre transient

and go wheres best for them, he said.

Heathcote Valley resident Sara Templeton, who is also the chairwoman for the Hagley-Fer-rymead Community Board, said the area had often been a popu-lar spot for boy racers.

    Bridle Pass Rd especially has

always attracted boy racers. Its a downhill road that lends itself to a bit of speed. Its been an ongo-ing issue for locals, she said.

In the past, police used to monitor the area quite heav-ily . . . it may be that they have to look at doing that again, she said.

A motorist walked away from a spectacular crash in the Port Hills last week.

A red Honda Civic plunged off Dyers Pass Rd and landed upside down about 10m down the hill last Tuesday.

The young male driving the vehicle was left with only a cut on his arm and a bang on his head.

Ambulance officers assessed the man and treated him for his minor injuries but he was not taken to hospital.

IN BRIEFSharp fall in property asking pricesBY GABRIELLE STUART

Prices that homeowners in Sumner and Mt Pleasant are asking for their properties have fallen sharply since this time last year, new statistics from Trade Me show.

The statistics look at average asking prices for properties listed for sale on the site in each suburb.

The average listing price in Mt Pleasant was $785,000 (down 7.2 per cent) and Sumner was $625,000 (down 10 per cent) in the past calendar year from Sep-tember 2013.

Those are some of the biggest drops recorded in Canterbury.

    The average across Canterbury

is $441,600, which is up 12.6 per cent over last year.

But, real estate agent Mark Gardner from Ray White Prier Manson in Redcliffs said the fig-ures didnt paint an accurate pic-ture of what he was seeing.

He said a lot of properties in the area were sold by auction, so they did not have listing prices.

Only suburbs with more than 10 listings in the months recorded were included in the statistics.

He also said that there had been a shift away from the suburbs af-ter the earthquakes, but he be-lieved confidence in the area was returning.

It wouldnt really make sense from what Ive seen, as confi-dence seems to be quite high.

But he believed property prices in the area were improving.

From my experience and from talking to people here, I believe that with some properties on the hills people are still feeling fairly conservative, but generally people are a lot more confident.

You only need to take a drive through the hills and see all the houses going up to understand that.

The Trade Me statistics averaged the prices of properties listed in the suburbs from July to September, and compared them with the same period last year.

The statistics include apart-ments and units, but not bare sec-tions.

BARGAIN: A three-bedroom home in Mt Pleasant, listed at $650,000. The average in the suburb was $785,000.

So Marc, how did the prepara-tion go for the show?

Well the process started quite some time ago, when I started to put together a design concept of what I was going to put forward. How can I say it Im dyslexic but Ive got millions of ideas in my head. I end up just putting them all in a folder and looking back later, and I might think that idea has style and longevity, and the next thing I need to think about is can I make it? If its sophisticated you might have to make a new tool or machine. Ive learnt that a hollow chain is often better than a solid chain, but it is very compli-cated to make.

Did you always want to design jewellery?

No, aircraft. I breathed it and dreamed it and wanted to design aircraft, but jewellery was more practical because of all the reading and studying I would have to do you could shoot me [before I did that].

Did you have any previous experience with jewellery?

Yes, I came from a family busi-ness many years ago where we were exporting to America, Germany and Britain. They all had very high-

quality standards. So my back-ground is in design. I understand how to design machines, and I took jewellery because I could control the process more. To then under-stand how to get from design to the store is more complex.

So where do you sell your jew-ellery from?

We opened our own shop in Redcliffs seven years ago. Before then we were exporting to some of the best houses in Australia, mak-ing one-offs and limited edition pieces. There might be three in yellow gold, three in white gold . . . but not many. We were importing to places like the Hardy Broth-ers Jewellers which has stores in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. When we decided to stop deal-ing in Australia, some companies contacted us and asked to sell our jewellery, just without our brand name. So basically they would sell it as their own, and Im not really

sure about that. Im still thinking about that one.

Do you think you will go back to sending some of your pieces overseas?

We are looking at entry into the United States now, just isolating it to one or two states. Were in contact with an American woman who seems to have a good idea of the markets over there. But Im not one to count my chickens before they hatch and it will take patience.

You say we, who is your busi-ness partner?

I do it with my wife Catherine. She looks after the retail side of things and I do the production. We work together well, and we have been for about 23 to 24 years. Weve been married for 33 years.

Wow, congratulations. Could you tell me how you met?

She used to work for her uncle, who was a top fashion designer in Taumarunui of all places. His name was Michael Mattar, and he won a lot of awards for his work. I met Catherine when she came back to Christchurch in Sumner actually. I saw this young woman

one morning and I asked her if she needed a lift down the hill on the way from work. It all just went from there.

Tell me about your family? My eldest son is in Auckland

studying pharmacy, and my youngest is year 10 at school.

So have you always lived in Christchurch?

Yes, we actually spent most of our married life in Avonhead. We moved back to Sumner in the last 14 years. I really enjoy Sumners diversity, I think its a fabulous place.

Marc Bendall showcased his jewellery at the Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week summer collections and awards show last week. The Redcliffs jeweller spoke to Emma-Jane McLennan about the show, the principles of jewellery design and dyslexia.

A southerly storm roars over the dry parched land, with a clatter of hail and beating of rain.

The trickle of a stream becomes a torrent and hurtles in a rush to the sea.

Everything in its path shifts and adapts to the change of flow.

The storm abates and the sky, land and bush are washed clean.

Lush dripping tree ferns replenish the forest floor with moisture, that seeps into the fissures in the ground.

Water sings through the valley again, in streams that dance down to the coast, where they slip under the reflective mirror of the sea.

Water, the elixir of life, forever continues on in the Water Song Cycle.

Clare Reillys work has been described as Neo-Romantic. Her paintings are imbued with a poetic stillness and calm.

Born and educated in Wellington, she has lived and worked in Christchurch since 1976 and is now a full-time artist. Her career spans more than three decades of painting and exhibiting throughout New Zealand, with many works going overseas.

    with jewellery

You can see the sea, the mountains and the city from here as long as its not a foggy day.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Im always thinking of design and shape for jewel-lery. Occasionally I go to the Air Force Museum since planes are what I love. I also sometimes go shooting up in the mountains, for deer, I really enjoy the mountains and forests. It is a bit of an unusual combination, I know. I also enjoy the water when I can get at it.

Do you mind me asking how old you are?

Not at all, Im 61. But Id still say Im happy to climb mountains [laughing].

Whats your philosophy when it comes to jewellery?

Well for the show its all about trying to make jewel-lery the statement piece on a model as they go past. I know in Hong Kong I saw clients come into a jewel-lery store, and they might be dressed in jeans and a T-shirt but they would buy a $10,000 chain which would make the whole outfit look good.

Is your personal ap-proach the same as for the fashion show, when some-

one comes into your store? No, that is all about per-

sonality. Your personality shows through your jewel-lery so Ill have a chat with a client when they come into the store, just talking to them slowly for half an hour or so and trying to figure their personality out. It should then come through in their jewellery. Especially for dress rings, whereas with chains you are more looking for shapes that will suit their face shape. You can either go large or small, and that depends on the trend at the time. Jewellery is very much a part of the fashion industry.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Bendall displayed his jewellery at a fashion and beauty show last week.

Little Rivers SiloStay has won a national architectural award, and is one of three Canterbury buildings to do so.

The collection of re-purposed grain silos, designed to function as serviced apartments, is a radical concept that was executed with fi-nesse according to judges of this years ADNZ/Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Pippin Wright-Stow of F3 De-sign was awarded the Commer-cial Interior Architectural Design Award sponsored by Gib for her work designing the complex.

It is made up of eight individual silo units, an accessible ground-level silo, high-tech energy gener-ating silo and an on-site wastewa-ter treatment facility.

All aspects of the SiloStay proj-ect are uniquely designed and cus-tom made.

It is one of three Canterbury architectural design across resi-dential and commercial sectors to scoop a win at the national awards.

Other Canterbury winners are Greg Young of Life Style Archi-tecture for his work on a fiji-based holiday home and Chris Wheeler

of Hierarchy Ltd for his work on a Soyo yoghurt bar on Riccarton Rd.

ADNZ general manager Astrid Andersen said the fact that Can-terbury is the only region in the country to receive more than two national awards is a real nod to the direction designers are taking in regards to the rebuild.

It is not often that three design-ers from the same region win na-tional awards. Canterbury is going from strength to strength and the number of awards won by the re-gion is a real reflection of this, Ms Andersen said.

UNIQUE: The designer of SiloStay complex in Little River has received a national architectural award for its innovation.

BY GARY MANCH, NAVIGATIONAL SAFETY OFFICER, LYTTELTON

Hi, from the harbour masters of-fice in Lyttelton.

Hopefully, the title of this article got your attention.

To put your mind at ease we are actually pirate-free in the bays, but as we know waterways, like pirates, can be dangerous and we need to be aware of what we can do to keep ourselves and our fami-lies safe.

Having recently started with En-vironment Canterbury as a navi-gational safety officer, my monthly columns will let you know whats happening on the recreational boating scene in and around the bays, provide some safety tips and generally keep you up-to-date through the summer months.

This month, I think it is timely to remind everyone of the boating

safety code we have in place here.Life jackets need to be worn

(not just carried) in vessels 6m and under.

The skipper is responsible for the vessel and everyone in it, so make sure you know who the skipper is and follow all instruc-tions.

Carry two types of emergency communications at all times- this could be a cellphone and an EPIRB (emergency position indi-cating radio beacon).

Check the weather before you go out, its no fun in a southerly squall.

And avoid alcohol while in or on the water, its not a great com-bination when you think about it.

So those are my tips for this month. Be safe out there. If you have any boating questions or in-formation you think should be mentioned, please feel free to email me at [email protected]

Couples cottage on the moveBY EMMA-JANE MCLENNAN

A Moncks Bay couples dedica-tion to an old cottage has seen it moved twice and bought back from CERA to avoid demolition when its site was red-zoned.

Dean Ross bought the old Rowley Avenue School tea room cottage as a wedding anniversary present for his wife about 10 years ago, after the couple spotted it at a King House Removals yard while out on a bicycle ride.

I thought oh it looks terrible but my wife said she loved it, Mr Ross said.

The cottage changed hands twice before he managed to buy it just in time to surprise his wife on their wedding anniversary. She cried when she saw the photo of the cot-tage, tucked inside an anniversary card.

The cottage was then gutted, spruced up by a builder, and moved to the back of the Ross home at 258d Main Rd, Moncks Bay. It was used as accommoda-tion for homestays, who abso-lutely loved it, Mr Ross said.

Its pretty cute. Its a real local icon now and everyone loves it.

The fully-furnished, self-contained cottage was closed to homestays after the February 22 earthquake.

The land it was on was sub-sequently red-zoned and the cottage doomed for demolition with it.

But Mr Ross struck up a deal

to buy back the old cottage from CERA.

They were kind enough to sell it to us. We were very lucky, he said.

As passionate Moncks Bay residents, the Rosses decided they wanted to build their new home and keep the cottage in the area.

Just two doors down from them,

at 254a, was an empty section that had been owned by the same fam-ily for 100 years.

A lot of people tried to buy it. We were very fortunate that they chose to sell part of it to us, said Mr Ross.

The cottage was recently relo-cated to the site by a crane the second time King House Remov-

als has moved the cottage for the Ross family.

Now they have turned their focus to building a home similar to their previous one on the site.

We love the bay and were so pleased we could stay here. Weve closed the cottage to homestays at the moment but we might start up again, Mr Ross said.

HEAVY LIFTING: The old Rowley Avenue School tea room cottage is lifted over the fence to its new home at 254a Main Rd, two doors along from its previous site.

A property at 67 Beachville Rd in Redcliffs was advertised for sale as is where is because it had no insurance and no claims passed over. The 2 bedroom bungalow on approximately 690m2 was damaged by the earthquakes but its location on the most amazing waterfront site with views over the ocean and city made the regular shaped section on the flat extremely sought after. There was huge interest in the property and a good marketing campaign drew over 50 groups to the auction, 10 of whom were bidders on the day. The property sold under the hammer and both vendor and buyer were very happy. Credit goes to the overseas seller who had absolute faith in their agents experience and who listened carefully to the market feedback. It was an excellent result due to a team effort including the auctioneer who ran an exciting auction. There are 9 parties that missed out that are now looking for a similar home in this area.

    BY GABRIELLE STUART

When Little River couple Pat and Nicola Martin started their business Solar Bright, they had no qualifications, no experience, and limited funds.

But they did have ideas and determination.

Seven years later, they are final-ists for a New Zealand Innovators Award for a potentially life-saving invention.

Their PATeye sits on the road like a normal cateye reflector, but flashes with a blue light when there is ice on the road.

It is already in use in car parks at The Hub Hornby and Westfield Riccarton, and is being tested by the New Zealand Transport Agency for use on the roads.

It is also being tested for use in Europe, Asia and the United States.

It is pretty exciting to be sitting in an office in Sydenham and hav-ing all this happening around us, Mrs Martin said.

The couple moved to New Zea-land from the United Kingdom 13 years ago, with their one-year-old daughter.

At the time we said well just travel New Zealand for a year, be-fore she gets older. And we ended up staying here, to the disgust of our parents.

At the time Mrs Martin was working as a personal assistant, and her husband was working as on shop fit outs.

Neither of us have been to

university or have any formal qualifications, but Pat has owned his own business since the age of 17 and Ive always been entrepre-neurial.

She said they wanted to put some of their ideas into action.

Weve always been people who jump in with both feet and worry about the consequences later.

She said they made a good team.

But she said that Christchurch was a great place to run a business.

Everything is within reach, and in Christchurch there are so many different industries on your doorstep that you can tap into.

Although their inventions are gaining traction, they have no plans to sit back and relax any time soon.

Children in Vanuatu will benefit from the generosity of Our Lady Star of the Sea School after it decided to donate old school desks.

When Modern Learning Environment furniture and technology was invested in by the school, pupils asked if their old furniture could be donated to children in need.

It says a lot about our kids that they are always mindful of others less fortunate than them-selves and always looking for ways that they can be of service to others, principal John Kane said.

So he contacted Pacific Path-ways, an organisation that will disassemble the furniture, store them in sea containers and sail them to Vanuatu where they will be reassembled and put into classrooms.

Meanwhile the Sumner pupils are enjoying their new colour-ful multi-purpose furniture, Google Chromebooks and iPads.

One of our kids said it was like working at the Google of-fice, Mr Kane said.

Canterbury Metro under-65kg halfback Oliver Lewis from Heathcote Valley Primary School was in action at the South Island primary schools representative rugby tournament at Burnside Park last week. Photographer Geoff Sloan was there when he made a neat offload out of a tackle during his sides 48-7 win over Southland.

Former Crusader Nathan Mauger has taken up the role of rugby manager at Lyttelton Rugby Club, where he will help to drive the expansion of the club at both junior and senior level, with the creation of a colts (under-21) team a priority.

He will also help to assist Lytteltons division two and colts coaches with their teams and development, as the club moves towards its goal of having a team in the metro

    division one competition by 2020.

Mauger said he was look-ing forward to getting back involved with his boyhood club: Im born and bred from Lyttelton, its where I first started playing rugby as a junior. Obviously Ive got history with the club, and my family has a strong history with the club, so Im really ex-cited about the opportunity.

Money is your best friend so treat it well

The key to having more money in your life is to love and respect the money you have already. Treat your money as if it is your best friend. If you respect your money, value it, and take care of it, you will attract more of it into your life. Having respect for your money means being responsible with it, keeping track of it, not wasting it or los-ing it unnecessarily and thinking about it in a positive way.

Are you guilty of being disrespectful to yourself and to your money? Do you:

Spend more money on birthday and Christmas presents than you can afford to?

Spend more money on friends than you can afford to?

Often buy takeaway food or eat out because you cant be bothered cooking?

Pay your bills late and therefore miss out on discounts or incur extra charges?

Buy on impulse rather than shopping around for lower prices on things that you need?

Often withdraw extra cash when you make an eftpos purchase?

Spend any money in your wallet just because it is there?

People who respect their money are generally more aware of how much they have, how much they can afford to spend, and how to get the most value out of it. Heres a test for you. Take out your wallet or purse. Before you open it, try and guess how much money is in there in notes and coins. Now see if you were right. Have a

look at how your money is organised. Are the notes neatly arranged or folded crook-edly? Are the coins kept tidily or are they perhaps scattered through your handbag, your clothing or even your house? How you store your money is often a sign of how much you respect it.

    TRAVEL

No adjectives can do Rocky Mountain National Park justice. The jagged snow-draped peaks, rocky tundra, green valleys and roaring waterfalls render exclama-tion marks inadequate.

The beauty is almost unearthly, and autumn is one of the best times to experience it. Aspen trees turn brilliant yellow; the bugle-like mating calls of elk echo in the mountains.

And starting this month, Rocky Mountain National Park launches a year of festivities to celebrate its centennial, including hikes, wild-life seminars, art shows and a wild game culinary festival.

THE EASTERN SIDEThe Continental Divide runs

through Rocky Mountain Na-tional Park, and the western side is greener and rainier, known as the wetter, better side, with more moose and bears though a ranger told us only two dozen bears live in the park.

The eastern side, although more crowded, is just a 90min drive from Denvers airport, and my pal and I decided to spend three days hiking here.

The gateway to the eastern side is the town of Estes Park, a tacky tourist Mecca full of hotels, motels, souvenir shops and a few good restaurants. The park entrance is 8km up the mountain, but feels worlds away. The park has five campgrounds, with two open year-round, but we stayed in a low-key motel-lodge at the towns edge, with an indoor pool and hot

tub to soak tired feet after a day on the trail.

It was a short drive from there to several trailheads, some best accessed by free park shuttle buses since parking lots soon get full.

PLANNING THE HIKESStart at a park visitor centre to

get maps and rangers advice on terrain, difficulty and distance. Some trails are even accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.

But remember, its not the dis-tance, its the altitude. Many hikes climb above timber line, which is at roughly 3350m. Altitude sick-ness, which can include dizziness, headaches, fatigue and disorien-tation, can occur about 1000m below that.

So although a 20km hike might be a breeze at sea level, be pre-pared to cut your usual mileage and pace. Water is essential bring plenty and drink often.

Out of dozens to choose from there are three memorable hikes, roughly 6km to 10km each and only moderately difficult at the toughest points perfect for rea-sonably fit hikers.

    BEAR LAKE CORRIDOR TRAILS

This system of trails south of Highway 36 is about 90min from Estes Park. A park-and-ride shuttle lot is near the Bear Lake trailhead. We chose a roughly 10km route, steep and gravelly in spots, past serene Nymph Lake,

covered in lily pads, and up past Lake Haiyaha a must-see climb over huge boulders to glimpse a gorgeous blue-green alpine lake surrounded by jagged snow-capped peaks.

We circled round past the turnoff to Mills Lake, with views of more peaks through forests of spruce, fir and quaking aspens, and along the dramatic Alberta Falls waterfall, back to the trail-head.

UPPER UTE TRAIL Even if you dont make the entire

13km round-trip on the Upper Ute Trail, from the Alpine Visitor Cen-tre to Milner Pass and back, youll still see awe-inspiring dramatic scenery, from barren tundra to alpine meadows and ponds, with

views of 4335m Longs Peak. This is fairly easy terrain, but be-

ware of weather and high altitude. The trail starts at about 3590m and youll be the tallest thing around on the barren first portion. Know the forecast especially where youre so exposed.

The parks first lightning deaths in more than a decade happened on or near this trail this summer.

Darkening clouds and my hiking partners altitude sickness, includ-ing extreme fatigue, made us turn back before the pass.

DEER MOUNTAIN HIKE The trail to the 3050m summit,

about a 10km round-trip, wraps around the mountain, offering sumptuous views. In spite of a steady climb, only the last portion near the top is noticeably steep.

The lower altitude made it easier for my friend. A panorama of the park awaits at the top.

TRAIL RIDGE RD The twisty drive along the sec-

tion of Highway 34 known as Trail Ridge Rd is also a must-do.

It runs about 80km from near Estes Park to Grand Lake on the parks west side, but even if you only make it to the Alpine Visitors Centre, roughly half way, it feels like youre on top of the world.

Its a seasonal road, open late May through mid-October.
