with a double tube core barrel is applied.The most common borehole diameter is146 mm with a core diameter of 101 mm.To perform core drilling with thesedimensions rotary power swivels areneeded that can achieve speeds of up to240 rpm.

They are excellent tools for theexploration industry. The capacity offorming holes with diameters up to 3 m and depth to 100 m even invery hard ground conditions makes themideal for bulk sampling. The holes caneither be cased or for greater depthsstabilized by drilling mud.

Exploration Bulk Sampling
“Bulk sampling” is a commonly usedindustry term to describe the practiceof the removal of relatively largequantities of a mineral bearingsubstance for the purpose of testingmineral content. Bulk samplinglocations are selected at random withthe necessity of using mobile butpowerful equipment which is capableof fast and easy self-travelling betweensampling locations and extracting up toseveral hundred tons of ore at onesampling position. Equipment, whichoriginates from the foundationbusiness, are excellent tools for thispurpose.

Sea floor bulk sampling
Bauer Maschinen offers sea floor bulksampling for diamonds with trench cuttertechnology.Over 4000 samples were extracted fromthe seabed to a depth of 5 m and 200 mbelow sea waterlevel off the coast ofNamibia by a sampling tool designed forBHPB.
MeBo
MeBo is a seafloor core drilling rig,working in water depth up to 4000 m. It isdeployed on the seabed, is electricallypowered and remotely controlled from thevessel via umbilical (survey by camerasand sensors). Four foldable legs providefor safe landing and verticality on theseafloor. The MeBo stores drilling rods, casingtubes and rotary barrels on two rotatingmagazines. Depending on the drillingsystem and coring diameter, the MeBohas a capacity to drill up to 200 m into theseafloor, to recover cores of 74 to 101 mmdiameter. Multiple cores can be stored inthe rod magazine to the total maximumcapacity. The preferred samplingmethods are push coring (soft sediments)and rotary drilling (wire line coring) forrock and sediments. Other methods likeCPT or vibro coring are optional. MeBo was originally developed in co-operation with the Marum Centre forMarine Environmental Sciences(University of Bremen).

Mining with trench cutter
technology
The well-proven trench cutter technologyof Bauer – which is normally used forconstructing underground walls – canalso be used for special mining activities.A good example is the introduction of thesystem in a diamond mine in SierraLeone. There are areas where kimberliteis present in narrow but long and deepveins within granitic base rock. With thetrench cutter technology it is possible toexcavate the kimberlite dykes without theneed of large scale rock excavation.

Inserted in a pre-drilled and fully casedborehole, the system uses a 3-phasewater jet with a pressure feed of up to600 bars to loosen the ore in the targetdepth of 150 to 180 m and the reversecirculation technology to feed into adewatering system.The system is a viable, special andcustomized solution whenever themineral deposits are too small to bemined with an open pit or withunderground operation.

For its Mclean Lake project, AREVAResources Canada Ltd. addressedBAUER Maschinen GmbH for thedevelopment and manufacture of analternative mining method for small,pocket-shaped high grade uraniumdeposits, embedded in sandstone.BAUER Maschinen GmbH designed andmanufactured a system to mine theuranium ore: the High Pressure ReverseCirculation (HPRC) system in closecooperation with AREVA ResourcesCanada Ltd. and BAUER Resources.

Blast hole rigs
Our daughter company HAUSHERR fromGermany is specialist for offering fullranges of blast hole drill rigs in varioussizes and versions for drilling diametersfrom 3 to approx. 9 inch. Machines of theHBM-Series can be used for rotary and /or DTH drilling, whereas machines of HSBseries are exclusively for DTH drilling. Awide range of options allow a high gradecustomizing of the rigs, which are used inblast hole and exploratory drilling in allkinds of open cast mining. Each rig hason-board compressor (high or lowpressure), a rod magazine and a safetycomfort operator cabin (ROPS / FOPS).All rigs are powered by CATERPILLARdiesel engines with sufficient powerreserves. If required some of the modelscan be installed on a wheeled chassisinstead of a crawler or / and with a 90°slew ring. The service free hydraulic rodhandling magazine operates withoutsensor technology. Depending on themachine type, the usable length of therods vary from 3 to 11 meters. All rigs aredistinguished by their excellentaccessibility, their long service life and bytheir simple and robust technology.
Perforation Cutter
In combination with floating clamshellmining e.g. for gravel, the PerforationCutter supports the clamshell operationin dense or hard layers, where even ahydraulic clamshell cannot penetrateeffectively. The BAUER cutter technologyis applied to perforate the hard layers toprovide access to the jaws of theclamshell, thus allowing excavation ofthese layers and further production.
Customized solutions
Many problems in mining can be solved when finding new and economicsolutions. Based on the world wide experience over many years in designing andconstructing of specialized foundation equipment, it is the strategy of BauerMaschinen to design new customized solutions and machinery for solvingproblems in a new way. Such an approach will always be made in closecooperation with the customer with incorporating their ideas and wishes.

Cut-off wall
Cut-off wall systems are ideally suited aswater barriers around excavation pits,mining pits or similar. A variety of cut-offsystems is available for almost each typeof soil and site condition, for temporary orfor permanent use. Cut-off walls areconstructed with techniques of thespecialist foundation industry like trenchcutters, slurry wall grabs or soil-mixingtechniques. Wall material ranges fromplastic concrete, standard concrete to in-situ mixed soil-cement material.

Mine Development Water Control in Open Mining
A huge cut-off wall on the DIAVIK Diamond
Mine in Canada serves as an impressiveexample for a complicated cut-off wall. The kimberlite pipes were sealed off with dikes and cut-off walls installed with BAUERequipment and technical support. More than40.000 m2 had to be sealed in water depths upto 25 m under extremely harsh conditions.
Continuous cut-off wall
For sealing off big lignite open pits inGermany, the energy company Vattenfallcreated a system of a continuous cut-offwall. The soil is excavated with a specialcutter – designed and supplied by BauerMaschinen. The excavated soil, mixed with clay slurryis pumped into the continuous trenchbehind the cutter. After sedimentation, animpervious clay crust is formed on bothsides of the trench.

Slurry mixers are essentialcomponents when constructingboreholes, wells or cut-off walls. MAT mixers are capable ofmixing bentonite slurries,cement slurries or bentonite-cement slurries. They can beprovided as fully automatic andelectronically controlled units, or as manually operated batchmixers, especially suitable inremote areas.

Well drilling
A standard method for groundwatercontrol is the installation of wells. Wellsare constructed around and inside openpits to allow for dry mining. Incombination with cut-off walls deep wellsare installed inside the pit for dewateringand to keep the water table below mininglevel at all time. Our daughter companies PRAKLABohrtechnik as well as BAUER-DEWETprovide drill rigs for drilling water wells upto 1000 mm diameter with a hook loadcapacity of up to 100 tons.

are required when working withreverse circulation methods (welldrilling, wall construction with BCcutters) to separate soil cuttings outof the slurry backflow.A variety of systems is availabledepending on the particle size of thecuttings and the volume stream to becleaned. Bauer BE desanders can treatvolume streams from 50 – 1000 m3/h.
