Sir Arthur Wellesley Joseph Bonaparte Battle of Talavera de la Reina, July 28, 1809: After Action Report Lt.Gen. Arthur C. Wellesley defeats King Joseph Napoleon The engagement started in the vicinity of the redoubt of Pajar de Vergara. The German division picked their way through the olive groves towards the Spanish infantry to the south of the redoubt, and directly towards the redoubt itself. The supporting German and Dutch artillery rolled forward to engage the enemy both in the redoubt and to either side. Ten allied cannon, including four Spanish 12 pounders, and the 2/7th Royal Fusiliers, occupied the redoubt. GdB Chasse led the first assault with several Dutch and Nassau battalions. Chasse was lightly wounded in the assault, as the artillerists and British Fusiliers manfully threw the attack back. As the first German assault was waning, in the center GdD Lapisse advanced with his division. The advance was preceded by a heavy screen of open order troops, and was supported on either flank by heavy artillery fire from the batteries of IV Corps and I Corps, the latter situated on the Cerro de Cascajal. This advance caused an immediate reaction amongst the allied forces, as Wellesley repositioned both Mackenzie and Cotton to support more closely Lowe and Langwerth’s brigades. The French batteries targeted the allied artillery remorselessly throughout the day in an attempt to silence their fire. As the French struggled across the Portina brook, their open order screen advanced towards the brigades of the Kings German Legion, whose own protective skirmish screen responded with musket and rifle fire. As Stapleton Cotton redeployed his squadrons from within the protection of the olive groves, he saw and seized the opportunity to charge the exposed French open order troops. The I.8me Ligne, let loose a desultory fire and turned tail exposing the horse artillery battery that was advancing in support of Lapisse’s attack. The battery quickly deployed one section of guns in an attempt to halt the 14 th Light Dragoons. The resultant fire brought down a few horsemen, but insufficient to halt their progress, and they rode into the battery sabering crew and train personnel whilst scattering the remainder of the battery and seizing the two deployed cannon. The engagement started in the vicinity of the redoubt of Pajar de Vergara. The German division picked their way through the olive groves towards the Spanish infantry to the south of the redoubt, and directly towards the redoubt itself. The supporting German and Dutch artillery rolled forward to engage the enemy both in the redoubt and to either side. Ten allied cannon, including four Spanish 12 pounders, and the 2/7th Royal Fusiliers,

occupied the redoubt.

The battery quickly deployed one section of guns in an attempt to halt the 14th Light Dragoons. The resultant fire brought down a few horsemen, but insufficient to halt their progress, and they rode into the battery sabering crew and train personnel whilst scattering the remainder of the battery and seizing the two deployed cannon. The dragoons then followed through into the rear of the retiring I.8me Ligne, Jourdan witnessing the charge, ordered Carriere to advance with his light cavalry to counter the British horse, but in the confusion they were unaware of the immediacy of

the threat, and failed to charge to protect their infantry. In the resultant melee, the I.8me lost its eagle and several hundred men were either lost of threw down their arms. Only then, on blown horses, were the British dragoons countercharged by the 2me Hussards, who easily overthrew the exhausted but triumphant 14th Light Dragoons. Who retired across the Portina, against which the 2me Hussards reined in. On the far right of the French line, Cassagne’s brigade was ordered forward to assault Stewart’s brigade on the Cerro de Medellin. Two battalions of the 63me Ligne, targeted the 1/48th Foot. The 48th calmly awaited the battalion columns, and unleashed a devastating volley, wounding Cassagne in the process, and forcing the 63me to falter and attempt to deploy to line, but as the smoke cleared the 48th raised three hurrahs and charged down towards the French. The French immediately turned tail and ran back towards the Portina, uncovering the supporting battalions of the 27me Legere, who in their turn counterattacked the 48th Foot, forcing them to retire back towards the crest. To Cassagne’s left, GdB Puthod was launching his own attack, but Puthod was targeting the two German batteries that were arrayed in advance of the British foot. Two battalions of the 94me Ligne crashed into these batteries, braving the destructive canister fire, and forcing the men to abandon their guns. In the attack, Puthod was unfortunately mortally wounded, and was unable to celebrate the temporary capture of ten allied cannon. Action was again picking up at the redoubt, as Hessian and Frankfurt battalions slammed into the first line of Spanish infantry to the south of the redoubt. The Marques de Portago taking cue from the example of Sir Alexander Campbell rode into the midst of the 1o Badajoz and called upon them to counterattack the Germans. In a surprise example of Spanish combined arms action, Portago was ably supported on his left by the cavalry of Henestrosa. These troops surged towards the Dutch that were attempting to assault the exposed Spanish battery and the redoubt. In the confused melee, the Dutch overpowered the men of the Spanish battery, only to be ridden down themselves, moments later, by the troopers of the Rey regiment. In the struggle, the Dutch lost their standard. Meanwhile at the redoubt, Chasse was again leading an attack with the second Dutch battalion. Chasse’s aide was struck and mortally wounded, as the Royal Fusilier’s bundled the Dutch, once more, back over the wall of the redoubt. To the right of Leval’s division, Ligier-Bellair’s division finally moved off towards the British to engage the Guards and Cameron’s brigade. Sebastiani’s French artillery had been pounding this portion of the line, focusing on the British batteries of Elliott and Sillery, and as the French infantry crossed the Portina, the batteries bore the brunt of the assault, together with the two infantry brigades. The French, some deploying to

line, others remaining in column for shock action, engaged in fire action at almost extreme musketry range. The British held their fire, but as the French came closer they unleashed a withering series of volley’s that forced the French to falter. To the right of Ligier-Bellair, Lapisse’s division was doing tremendous damage to the Brigades of Langwerth and Lowe. GdB Solignac and BG Lowe were both wounded, Lowe severely, and both brigades collapsed under a hail of lead. Donkin’s brigade was perfectly positioned to replace Lowe, but the French had no suitable reserves. The only immediate reserves available to them were the three brigades of Latour Maubourg’s Dragoons, but Joseph was reluctant to release these into the fray. Both Joseph and Jourdan preferred to reinforce success, hoping to release these squadrons against a defeated and fleeing enemy. With the Dutch and Hesse-Darmstadt battalions of Leval’s division broken and dispersed, Sebastiani was forced to release his last remaining reserve, the Poles of Oberst Potocki. These two battalions drove straight towards the redoubt; the irrepressible GdB Chasse joined one of the battalions whilst Potocki led the other. At the same time, Sebastiani whilst valiantly attempting to rally the Dutch Horse artillery was mortally wounded in sight of the advancing Poles. Chasse screaming ‘avenge Sebastiani’, drove into the Spanish 12 pounder battery defending the left of the redoubt. The battery broke and fled abandoning three cannon, but the remaining gun let loose one last round of canister, and Chasse fell severely wounded. BG Kemmis, immediately lead the 2nd Somersetshire against the triumphant Poles, but the Poles, with their blood up avenging both Sebastiani and Chasse, held and threw back the British infantry. Meanwhile the other Polish battalion crashed into the Royal Fusiliers. The Fusiliers had already seen off two Dutch assaults, and now heartily fatigued, the fresh Poles, drove mercilessly into their midst. Within moments, during a violent struggle around the Fusiliers Kings Color both it and an unhorsed Sir Alexander Campbell’s were captured. The redoubt was now firmly in Polish hands, both Sebastiani and Chasse had been avenged. At the same time, MG de Alos, leading the Infanta cavalry regiment, was mortally wounded, and Marques de Portago fell, severely wounded, alongside the 1o Badajoz from a volley from the Frankfort Rheinbund battalion. The capture of the redoubt was perhaps the high water mark of the Franco-German-Polish assault. The French troops engaged in the center and far right, on the Cerro de Medellin, were largely a spent force. The Anglo-Spanish, could still call upon the largely unengaged brigades of Mackenzie and Donkin, and four Spanish battalions remained in support having suffered only three casualties. It was clear to both Joseph and Jourdan that further effort was impractical, and the exhausted French troops retired back across the Portina, relinquishing all of the captured

allied artillery in the process. Even the three Spanish 12 pounders were left in the redoubt as the Poles reluctantly dressed their lines with the French to their right and retired to the protection of the olive groves in their rear. It had been a hard fight for both sides; the French had lost a total of 9,157 men, including 1,326 captured. Three stands of colors had been lost, including the eagle of the 8me Ligne. Six general officers had been killed or wounded, with the loss of IV Corps commander Sebastiani being the most significant. The Anglo-Spanish had lost a total of 4,744 men, including 867 captured. The Kings color of the Royal Fusiliers had been lost, and five officers had been either wounded or captured, the Spanish corps commander J.M. de Alos later dying of his wound. Wellesley was justifiably proud of the effort of his British and KGL contingents, in particular the 14th LD, which he mentioned in dispatches to Horse Guards. But he was equally appreciative of the efforts made by the Spanish, particularly the Badajoz regiment led by the Marques de Portago. Joseph had been defeated tactically, and the loss of fourteen guns from the German Division was a grave embarrassment, but strategically, Wellesley was defeated. Threatened by Marshal Soult to the north, Wellesley evacuated the field the next day and quietly retired towards the Portuguese border. The following orders of battle represent the combat strengths, formations and status at the beginning and end of the battle. Legend: Units and Officers that are grayed out indicate that they are off table in reserve. Units and Officers that are in red indicate that they have a compulsory movement restriction, or in the case of an officer, wounded or otherwise incapacitated [captured]. [W] denotes No Advance [R] denotes Halt or Retire [Y] denotes Routing [D] denotes Dispersed and removed from the field
