It’s not difficult to while away an hour or two in this lovely town with interesting shops and old buildings lining the narrow streets that rise up from the River Avon and its ancient bridge.
It can be a bit like a walk through time, for Saxons, Romans, Normans, Georgians and Victorians all have left their mark in the story of the town.
The small building on the bridge was originally a chapel, later used as a small prison or Blind House where
local Bradford-on-Avon drunks and troublemakers were left
overnight to cool off !
There are interesting independent shops to entice you and cafés and
restaurants to sustain you.
Warminster is a handsome Wiltshire country town well worth a stroll round.
Historic buildings include Warminster Maltings, Britain’s oldest working maltings, and Dents glove factory. Dents was founded in 1777 and has been supplying gloves for royalty since the reign of George III. It made the coronation gloves for Queen Elizabeth II.
There’s a Farmers’ Market on the first and third Friday of each month from 9am to 1.30pm in Central Car Park near the library, and a Friday Country Market at the library from 9.30 to 11.30am.

Just east of Westbury on the hillside below an Iron Age fort is the oldest of several Wiltshire white horses carved out of the landscape. This one is 180ft tall and 170ft wide.
It’s thought the restoration in 1778 may have obliterated another horse on the same slope that faced the other way.
The horse been adopted as a symbol for the town of Westbury, but is also considered a symbol for Wiltshire as a whole.

Seigfried Sassoon was one of the leading poets of the First World
War, his poetry describing the horrors of the trenches and satirising many patriotic pretensions of those days. He was decorated for bravery.
In 1933 Siegfried Sassoon bought the Georgian Heytesbury House, and lived there until he died in 1967, one week before his 81st birthday. The house was sold in 1986 and divided into flats.

Salisbury Cathedral is unusual among English cathedrals in that it was built all in one style, Early English Gothic, between 1220 and 1258, although the spire was added in the early 14th century. Piercing the Wiltshire sky at 404ft, it is the tallest in the land.
Another claim to fame is that the Cathedral Close is England’s largest and,
many will argue, loveliest, too.
Salisbury is a fine city to explore with interesting buildings of its own and excellent shops.

Take discover to Warminster for a most unusual trip.
Once a year, old London Routemaster buses climb up from Warminster Station to isolated spots on Salisbury Plain that are normally closed to the public.
Travel along lonely roads that usually only echo to the sound of rumbling tanks on army training duties, and see the abandoned village of Imber. Villagers were evicted in 1943 to provide an exercise area for American troops preparing for the invasion of Europe in the Second World War. Imber has been under the control of the Ministry of Defence ever since.
No need to book in advance - just turn up and pay the conductor on the bus. Buses run up to every 15 minutes - really. It’s great fun!
