WILLIAM OF HANOVER, AND SON,

EPHRAIM OF NJ, LINE HAS NOW COME

TO A CLOSE By Sandy Bates

Up to this point we have been discussing William of Hanover and his Family Line. What we are 100% sure of, is the DNA results belong to the William of Hanover NJ Line. We have established this line by using Billy Samuel Bates as the baseline person .

Now if we accept William of Hanover’s Father as Thomas of Wales, then we must now look at WILLIAM BATES who im-migrated from England to Ireland and then to NJ, settling at Newton Creek NJ, what is today known as the Cottonwood area. At this time I have no established DNA line for this William, and his descendants. Since I had felt that Billy Samuel Bates was my established line, I now find myself back to square one.

William lived in Ireland, and Philip Geoghegan and Wife Del-phine now own the land and buildings where William lived. Located in Kilbride Wicklow, County Wicklow, Ireland. Philip will be submitting an article and pictures for a future bulletin.

Along with that article I will do write ups on this William and his descendants. Since we have a missing generation it will be just trying to piece together what info we do have and submit it, and the Info from the area William settled.

RESULTS FROM ELECTION OF OFFICERS by Sandy Bates

Once again the same slate of officers were voted into Office. Many nice words were expressed, as to what a great job the Of-ficers are doing, as well as all Volunteers. I want to personally thank all members who voted. There was one write in vote for Terri Bates Black as Vice President.

THIS MAY BE A NEW BATES LINE by Sandy Bates

But at this time we have no DNA to see if any matches. So for now I am calling it THOMAS of ENGLAND, with Immigrants, to the US, in the line being; SAMUEL BATES 1796-1894 and his SONS.

BRICK WALL FOR Francis & Shirley

Bates Francis knows that his Great Grandfather was Frank A. Bates, born 1860 in Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York. He married Annette Woodward. They had a son, Hugh S. THE BATES ASSOCIATION FOUNDED IN 1907

Line, and also the 24 marker, but does not seem to match close in the 37 marker. So we will have to research this line for Stephen.

BILL & DORIS GAIL CAGLE of NJ - Gail can go back to Ephraim Madison Bates b 1824 d 1894, and buried in Gilmer, Co, GA. He marr Cynthia Hunter 20 Nov 1844 in Early Ruther-ford Co NC. We can go no farther. Would like to find when and where this line of Bates made it to US soil. Ephraim Madison Bates had son, Watsil Avery Bates b 1857 marr. 1877 Laura Emeline Sharp, b 1855 d 1924, Watsil d 1887. Next in line is William Pooley Bates b 1883 GA, d 1967, marr 1904 Lenora Miller, b 1885 d 1951. Next Roy Bates b 1925 GA d 1981 Dal-las TX, then Doris Gail.

WENDY MACDANIELS of ME - Wendy can go back in her line to a Francis S Bates, (goes by name Frank or Franklin) b 1855 in Rockland or Jefferson, Maine, d 1912-- His son Harvey A. Bates b 1880 Whitefield ME--then Frank Alden Bates b 1905 Bath ME, or Boothbay Harbor, ME--Marilyn Ann Bates b Bath ME then Wendy.

Wendy has been trying to piece together the Bates of Lincoln Co ME and has some guesses as to who Francis’s parents may be. In 1880 census Francis was living with a John Allen Bates b 1820 and Margaret Augusta Bates. John Allen Bates is listed as Francis’ stepfather. Wendy believes that John Allen Bates could have been a relatives of Francis’ father. John Allen Bates par-ents were Jared and Eunice Bates of Whitefield, ME. Also, a David b 1813 could be a possibility for Francis’s father. One other possibility is a Allen Bates of Waldoboro, ME b 1824, marr Catherine Acorn, in 1850 she d 1853. Allen Bates did marr Augusta Wallace 1854 in Rockland, ME and could be right time frame for Francis’ birth. The name Allen has been handed down, as Francis had a son Allen Francis b 1877. There are also Wal-laces on my grandfather’s side of the Family. Thanks for any help on my line.

BRICK WALL for William S Bates First off his DNA matches others that we know go back to the William of Hanover, NJ line. Also, the line of George Bates of Brimfield, MA, is only one mutation away. Sandy has not been able to establishment any kind of a connection with these folks. But with the matches she would say that there is definitely some kind of a connection within these two family lines. Now we have William S. Bates who matches William of Hanover and one away from George of Brimfield, with his line going back to a John Bates 1770 marr. Frances Burnett. Sandy cannot hook him up anywhere in the William of Hanover of NJ line, or the George of Brimfield line.

On the Internet you can find several Family Lines written up taking this John Bates of 1770 back through an Isaac--Isaac--Isaac--John--George--John--Isaac--John--William--William--Robert--Richard. This is incorrect information. It is not known who the parents of John Bates 1770 are.

The Bates of Old Virginia has three times engaged genealogists in England and failed to find information. Also, the DNA of John of 1770 does not match the DNA of the above incorrect line given.

We begin with William S. Bates’ Family line:

BRICK WALL for Barbara & Karen

Craley Researching for her brother-in-law, Tommy Bates and his brother Rick.

Sandy has spent numerous hours researching the information for Barb. She has searched in every place available to her, and finds no connections to this line. What she does know is that the DNA results are only one mutation away from the Edward of Wey-mouth, MA line.

We begin with 1. Daniel Bates. Barb says that a county history published in the late 1800’s of OH, (Pioneer Record and Remi-niscences of the Early Settlers and Settlement of Fayette Co., OH, by Rufus Putman) states Daniel immigrated from Virginia about 1808. This was written many years after Daniel’s death. Barb says she has found no actual records that place Daniel in VA, at any time. His wife, Jane, stated in her 80’s, that her hus-band, Daniel, came from VA.

According to pension records Daniel served in the war of 1812. Daniel was born 11 Sept 1786 in VA (an 1850 Census I found says born in PA). He marr. Jane Hankins 03 Oct 1805 in Ross Co., OH. Jane was born in VA, 5 Jan 1786. She died 27 Aug1874 in Fayette Co., OH. Daniel d 07 Oct 1844 in Fayette Co., OH. Daniel was a Farmer. In the 1810 Tax Rolls, Daniel paid 65 cents in tax for 100 acres land of most inferior quality. In 1811, John Blue found a horse and Daniel and another man appraised it. In 1822, Daniel was listed as appraiser for estate of Mark Morris. In 1827 Daniel served on two juries. In 1835, Real & Personal Property Tax list, Daniel had 3 horses 5 cattle and 0 carriages.

Both are buried in the Bates-Gamble Cemetery in Fayette Co., OH.
