BATEMANS BAY HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S REPORT What Really Happens In Class I paid a visit to a Year 10 English class late last week to hear some performance poetry. To the uninitiated, performance poetry differs from other forms in that it is usually delivered as a dramatic monologue to an audience rather than published for appreciation at a later date. Extemporaneous performance poetry is particularly impressive and a quick detour to YouTube will show you some exciting and contemporary examples. Along with the rest of the class, I sat spellbound listening to Ms Koprivec’s students. Each individual read the anonymous work of another aloud, which seemed to make the poetry even more powerful. I resisted the temptation to hold the students back any further at the conclusion to make the most of another teachable moment, partly because I knew a Science lesson beckoned, but primarily because I realised that for the past twenty minutes I had been the student and not the teacher. I learned three valuable lessons. Our students, despite protestations to the contrary, had learned to use language in new and sophisticated ways. Even those who, through their own compositions, acknowledged their creative difficulties in using poetic devices, were employing anaphora, assonance and alliteration with relative ease (a special mention goes out to the student who made the Sisyphean reference). Our students have a social conscience. To my recollection, none of the themes were superficial or frivolous. They dealt with consequential matters of a personal, local and global nature. It was enlightening to discover how our students felt about themselves, their education and much greater issues like the pressures on young people in modern society. Our students are just like us. I remember participating in a public speaking activity when I was in Year 10. My fears and that of my peers were no different to those so eloquently expressed by this class. My desire for a more optimistic and tolerant world of opportunity is shared. It is easy for older generations to dismiss the attitudes of “Generation Z” for being perversely shaped by technology and social media, but such action would be misguided. Awards for Excellence in VET Emily Burggraaff has just received an Excellence in Vocational Education and Training award for her outstanding accomplishments in Hospitality. She was one of just a handful of students from across the shire to be presented with an award at a reception held at the Moruya Golf Club last week. Workplace Learning South Coast sponsored the inaugural event to raise the profile of student achievement in VET and role of VET in schools. VET, whether it be delivered by the school or accessed by students through external providers such as TAFE, is an important component of senior school for many students. It provides a wealth of practical knowledge and experience through competency-based coursework and work placement. In 2015, a third of Batemans Bay High School’s HSC graduates received a nationally recognised VET qualification in fields such as hospitality, construction and tourism. In a time where there is so much focus on university entrance and higher education, VET offers a genuine accelerated pathway for those wanting a head start in a select group of careers whilst remaining at school. What Really Happens In Class I paid a visit to a Year 10 English class late last week to hear some performance poetry. In Week six this term, students involved in Clyde Circus and Year 9 Drama travelled to Wollongong to perform in Southern Stars. The show was performed in WIN Entertainment Centre, and included acts from all over the state. The students performed in four shows, and had two full days of rehearsal. For many it was their first time performing to such a large audience. However, performing was not the highlight of the experience. Instead, students exercised skills such as independence and teamwork behind the scenes of the show. Over the four days they worked together to cook, clean and organise their way through their busy show business schedule. The bonds they formed while doing this will resonate with them for a long time to come. It is opportunities such as this that make students enthusiastic about their education. The students would like to thank Ms McCutcheon, Mr Perrem, and Mr Attwood for making this possible.

The students involved were: Emma Stammers, Alexa Warwick, Jessica Lomnicki, Stephanie

Wadley, Ashley Agnew, Kris Cetinic, Jasmin Chappell, Stella Cross, Alexander Graham,

Jessica Hughes, Harrison O’Keeffe, Ella Pearce, Lachlan Rickards, Katie Stammers,

Gabrielle Vandenbergh, Georgia Laverack, Lily Attwood, Jacomb Graham, Brody Johns,

Bradley Jones, Rhodes Lea, Rhys MacDonnell, Jaiden McCartney, Aisha Roman,

Lily Attwood

Fie Sorensen Wilson, Riley Wade.

Each square has exactly 14 of its perimeter as part of the line, and together these form the whole line. This means the total perimeter is 4×24cm=96cm .

Algebraically, the diagram on the left shows that the line has length a+b+c+d+e+f=24cm . The total of the perimeters is then:

4a+4b+4c+4d+4e+4f=4(a+b+c+d+e+f)=4×24cm=96cm
