I Applied for 300 Jobs (Still Didn't Hear from McDonald's)

• I wasn't unqualified but rather not as qualified as other applicants —

the results speak for themselves: three hundred résumés sent, eight interviews, and two real prospects, both doing something I think I would hate.

David vs GoliathLooked at every war fought in the past 200 years between strong and weak combatants.

The Goliaths, he found, won in 71.5 per cent of the cases.

What happened when underdogs acknowledged their weakness and chose an unconventional strategy?

David’s winning percentage went from 28.5 to 63.6.

Page 32: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

• Spend all of your time and effort looking for the ‘wrong’ job and not only will you be unable to convince a potential employer of your motivation and enthusiasm, but you will also be leading yourself along the road to future unhappiness.

• Ranks 1st in consistent driving distance

How Most People look for Work

• Want Ads/ Sunday Papers

• Internet

• Employment Agencies

• Word of Mouth

• Direct Contact with Employers

How Employers Fill Jobs

• Internal Networks

• Job Postings

• External Networks (Professional Organizations)

• Placement Employment Agencies

• Civil Service Lists

Page 40: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

How do you look for job openings

• Job Boards percentage of job-seekers who actually get their jobs off the boards is relatively low about 5-10 percent

• Recruiters -- About 10-20 percent of people in search find their jobs through recruiters

Page 41: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

• Cold Calling -- Approximately 10-20 percent of people in search find their jobs by cold calling on potential decision makers in companies

• Networking -- Close to 70-80 percent of people in search get their jobs through networking

Page 42: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

Recruiters must build relationships

•The ability to find great people and build relationships with them should be the core competence of

every recruiter. This is what all great recruiters do. Recruiters within organizations need to get out of the organization and get to know people at all

levels and professions who might be useful to their firm. They need to use technology to help create the initial relationship, and then they need to leverage that by using social media including Twitter, blogs, websites, and anything else that will create authentic interaction with a potential candidate.

How are recruiters looking for applicants

• Demise of the major job boards • Increased focus on top performers vs. the

masses. A basic principle of consumer marketing is to identify an

ideal target customer and develop messages that meet their motivating needs

until the recent past, most recruitment advertising has been

targeted to attract average performers

SEO The adoption of consumer marketing

principles to recruiting. • Replacing individual postings will be search

engine optimized talent hubs, where candidates can search for jobs by class and company (e.g., all Flash developers at Google).

• These are company- and job-specific niche boards that will replace the need for aggregators and all public boards.  At these sites prospects can submit resumes, be funneled to specific openings, or just be followers.

the rise of Web 2.0, social media, blogs, Twitter, and LinkedIn,

• It's also obvious that your best employees have heard of, or personally know, the best people in your industry and in their field of expertise.

• Tapping into this network through a employee referral program will be a critical component of tomorrow's programs

Page 49: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

Time of possession will become the dominant recruiting metric

for hiring top people

• The sourcing sweet spot of the near future will be to get these people to call you on the first day they decide to get serious about considering a new career opportunity.

• It's pretty obvious that those candidates found on day one are of higher quality than those found after they've been looking 2-3 weeks. (Note: good recruiting agencies are already doing this.)

Personal Branding (Google Search)

• A friend advertised on Craigslist for a housekeeper.

Three interesting resumes came to the top.

She googled each person's name.

Page 53: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

• The first search turned up a MySpace page. There was a picture of the applicant, drinking beer from a funnel.

• Under hobbies, the first entry was, "binge drinking."

Page 54: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

• The second search turned up a personal blog. The most recent entry said,

• "I am applying for some menial jobs that are below me, and I'm annoyed by it. I'll certainly quit the minute I sell a few paintings."

• The 3rd? There were only six matches, and the sixth was from the local police department, indicating that the applicant had been arrested for shoplifting two years earlier.

• Three for three.• Google never forgets

Page 56: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

How is Social Media used by Hiring Managers

• A Poll completed by Digital Brand Expressions and InterBiznet, surveyed 100 hiring managers at various sized companies on how they use social media in the hiring process.

• Of the hiring managers surveyed, 75 percent said they use LinkedIn, 48 percent said they use Facebook and 26 percent said they use Twitter to research potential candidates before making a job offer.

• When it comes to sourcing candidates, 66 percent of hiring managers use LinkedIn, 23 percent use Facebook and 16 percent use Twitter.

Have You Developed a Networking plan?

Page 91: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

Every deal has three parts

• Courtship, negotiation and marriage.,..

Page 92: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

CourtshipYou win when you are respectful,

diligent, enthusiastic, engaging, outgoing, and relentless in your search to make a

connection

Page 93: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

CourtshipDo your homework, research people's

backgrounds

Learn about their kids

Visit them--don't make them visit you.

Look people in the eye, ask hard but engaging questions

Page 94: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

Hint: if you skip the courtship part,

the other two stages probably won't come up.

Networking

Don’t Make Cold Calls MAKE WARM CALLS

Use these 4 rules :

1. Convey credibility: mention a familiar person or institution.

2. GET FACE TIME

3. State your value proposition: what can you do for them?

4. Be prepared to offer a compromise: go big at the outset, leaving room for compromise.

• Publish a monthly newsletter. Interview people from your network and feature them as experts. They will take ownership of their inclusion and spread that publication to everyone they know.

FOLLOW UP or FAIL

•Ping all the time 80 percent of building and maintaining relationships is just staying in touch (or “pinging”). Pinging takes effort. You have to keep pinging and pinging and pinging and never stop.

•Repeat and repeat again Becoming front and center in someone’s mental Rolodex is contingent on one invaluable little concept: repetition.

How do I use twitter for the Job search

• Step 1: Identify Your Brand’s Keywords• Do a search on yourself and see what comes up. You may find someone

with your name has coveted the top fold. From there, identify what keywords you can use to differentiate yourself from this person. Should you be using your full name? Your middle initial? Your affiliation with an organization or a type of work? Figure out how you want people to find you so you can build your brand around these keywords.

• Step 2: Become a Blog Reader & Commenter• Begin reading career-related content on blogs for 10 minutes daily. This will

help you stay-up-to date and in-the-know. Then, start posting thoughtful, well-written, professional comments on these blogs related to your field of interest. Don’t know where to find these blogs? Go to www.AllTop.com – they are like a magazine rack of online blogs. There, you’ll be able to find dozens of blogs related to your career aspirations so that you can post comments to enhance your credibility as a knowledgeable member of your field/industry. Better still, if you are reading this, you are on a blog RIGHT NOW. So, take 2 extra minutes to post a comment and you’ll be on your way.

Page 127: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

• To keep the process simple, batch your tips and advice. I use www.TweetLater.com to schedule my timeless tweets, and space them out evenly throughout the day. HINT: The most active Twitter days are Monday through Wednesday and the peak Twitter times are early afternoon (noon, specifically). You could spend 25-35 minutes a week writing advice or 5 minutes a day to take advantage of this form of engagement.

• Answer questions (time spent per day: 5 minutes)

• I use Twitter’s search engine to find questions in my area of expertise. Let’s say I wanted to brand myself as an MBA Application Consultant. I would use the search term “GMAT ?”

• You can subscribe to any search terms you want via RSS by using “Feed for this Query” on the right sidebar. It’s really important to choose your queries wisely. The trick is to a) pick a search term that is very specific and b) include the question mark – this particular query only produces two to three items per day.

RT or Retweet

• One of the greatest aspects of Twitter is how quickly word of mouth spreads globally. If a user thinks another users tweet is interesting, they may choose to retweet what they say. In this instance, the member will repeat what the twitter user said. Example: “Did Jeremiah got a doctorate in Twitter?” if a second user sees this and agrees, they will echo it back in the following way: “Retweet: @Jowyang Did Jeremiah got a doctorate in Twitter?”. In a shortened version, they may also use RT, an abbreviated version of Retweet, it would go like this: “RT: Did Jeremiah got a doctorate in Twitter?”. And in case you’re wondering, no I didn’t get a doctorate in Twitter, but I did get my undergrad in Twitter. BT a Bachelors of Twittering.

Don't Give Up on Change

• 1. Ownership "This will work if, and only if, I make it work. I

am going to make this work." 2. Time Habits that have taken years to develop

won't go away in a week. Set time expectations that are 50% to 100% longer than you think you will need to see results — then add a little more.

Page 149: Batavia Social Networking and the Job Search

3. Difficulty In setting goals, it's important to accept the

fact that real change requires real work. 4. Distractions Plan for distractions in advance. Assume

that crazy is the new normal. You will probably be close to the reality that awaits

5. Maintenance Real change requires real effort. The "quick

fix" is seldom a meaningful one. Distractions and things that compete for your attention are going to crop up — frequently.
