History

Education game Tomas Bata realized very early on the importance of not only looking after his employees, but also training and educating them, since educated, self-reliant and prospective employees serve as a guarantee for the future success of the company. They are its hope. Bata’s vision formed the basis for setting up Bata schools.

He himself lacked any higher education. He first started thinking about how to go about developing his employees back in 1909, when preparing a new vision for the future new Zlín. Even back then he counted on building an entire school district in Zlín providing the basis for a Bata education.

The Tomas Bata Shoe School was founded as the first business school in Europe.

Little by little the whole system of industrial education came into being. Over time, the Bata School of Work not only incorporated shoemakers, but also electricians, chemists, mechanists, builders and others.

Bata’s important “Education Game” got under-way on 15th September 1925. It was at this time that the Bata School of Work opened its doors to students. The school was for boys with 80 pupils entering the first grade. From the beginning, it focused on professional training and consistent social education. The boys at the Bata School of Work grew up as confident and skilled young men educated to the highest possible level, able to understand and find their way around the organi-zation, administration and management.

Four years later, the boys’ school was joined by the newly formed girls’ school. The girls were called “young women” and the boys “young men”. The number of those interested in studying at the Bata School of Work was constantly on the rise. In 1934, 19,000 applicants applied to be admitted, with the school accepting 1,000-1,500 students each year.

Students from Around the World Descend on the Bata School It wasn’t just citizens of Czechoslovakia who were interested in being educated at the Bata School. Leadership positions to work at Bata factories and stores abroad were for instance taken up by12 Indians, 14 Englishmen, 28 French, 36 Ger-mans and 136 Yugoslavs. The BSW also trained Americans, Dutch, Egyptians, Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians.

The BSW only admitted students who had com-pleted town schools, i.e. primary schools. The age ranged from 14-15 years. The study programme lasted three years. The education comprised of three parts: work in the plant, evening classes in the school and training in the boarding house.

New students gained their first experience in the induction workshop, the so-called shoemaker school. New employees under the supervision of experienced instructors acquired their first job skills.

The principle of your own earnings “You’re fifteen, earn your living!” This was the clear and logical principle in training new ap-prentices. Apprentices kept their yearbooks, in which they recorded the amounts of weekly wages, deductions for insurance, accommo-dation, tuition, meals and shopping for every-day needs, or travel expenses, allowances to parents and pocket money. Yearbooks were submitted each week to their educators to check. The apprentices deposited the result-ing surplus into their personal accounts. The Bata Company guaranteed interest of 10% on it.

Schools offered their education wherever they opened new plants, E.g. in Baťovo, in Třebíč, in Zruč nad Sázavou, in Sezimovo Ústí, in Baťovany and in Svit under Tatras.

The Bata School of Work became the basis for building industrial and commercial education in Zlín. Activities of the schools ended with the arrival of the communist regime in the Czech Republic in 1948.

The Bata Phenomenon

A MODERN, VISIONARY MANAGER, A MAN OF ALMOST GENIuS-LIkE STATuS: THESE CHARACTERISTICS MADE TOMAS BATA’S PERSONALITY EXCEPTIONAL. HE WAS A PIONEER IN MANY RESPECTS.

Page 5: BATA, Detail fall 2013 issue

ISSuE 1 – 2013 / 5

The Bata educational system was really ingen-ious. Thanks to this, the number of inhabitants in Zlín soon multiplied, which in turn led to growth in terms of the number of employees at Bata too. Graduates, young men and young women, found it easy to apply their skills. Not only at Bata com-pany, but also in other businesses. Not to mention in other countries and continents. And it wasn’t just skills and expertise that Bata School gradu-ates took with them when they left. Their biggest

advantage in the labour market was cohesion, patriotism, honour, assiduity, self-reliance and courage.

Wake up and warm-up! The magic of board-ing houses Students came to study at the Bata School of Work not only from all over the country, but also from different parts of the world. Logically, hostels - (school) boarding houses were built for students. Of course, they were divided into boys’ boarding houses and boarding houses for girls. The boarding houses had many other, quite meaningful rules. The alarm-clock started ring-ing every morning at five-thirty. This was imme-diately followed by heading out for morning exer-cise, performed both in summer and winter. Time was then allocated for personal hygiene, tidying rooms followed by breakfast. If you were thinking that this was followed by school classes and a bit of work experience in the afternoon, then you couldn’t get further from the truth. By seven eve-ryone had started their work in the factory. They continued their practice in the afternoon with only one longer break for lunch. Within two hours, they all managed to have lunch and had some free time for themselves.

From two to five o’clock in the afternoon they again worked and had to wait until dinner finished

before starting their education. The subjects included German and English language courses with some subjects which students could select for themselves. Days finished with a nine o’clock curfew. Saturdays included studies and sports. Sundays were free. In 1932 2,800 girls and 2,700 boys lived at the boarding houses.

Origin and history of the BSG Club (Bata School Graduates) Over time Bata School of Work graduates set up their own club. This was founded as a voluntary organization, and most certainly had no political ambitions. Only Bata School of Work graduates

were able to become members of the club whose mission was to offer activities relating to educa-tion, sports and entertainment. The club’s head-quarters were located on the third floor of the former Community House and its first president was Tomas Bata Jr. (son of Tomas Bata).

The BSG Club also published its own journal until 1938 called “The BSG Club Newsletter”. Start-ing in 1939 the publication went by the name “Forward” including the subtitle “The BSG Club Newsletter”.

Branches of the club burgeoned in the Czech Republic like mushrooms after rain. Finally, they went international - sprouting up in Berlin, Germany, konnagar, India and also in Borova, Yugoslavia.

Tomasov’s Elite StudentsTomasov was the school for the best selected students from Bata schools. The Tomasov house was built in 1938 and its designer was the famous Czech architect, F. L. Gahura. Bata went by the motto “To have skilled co-workers, we need to educate them,“ and this was even more applicable in the case of managerial cadres.

People from Tomasov (“Tomasovci“) were prepared for leadership positions in modern enterprises worldwide. This corresponded with the top quality of teaching. At school among other things they were taught foreign languages, etiquette and communication, while during the day they worked. On the walls of the factories and Tomasov you could read mottos that may sound funny today, but which at that time took on enormous importance: “Be the first, be winners“, “Fight is the father of all“, “Each day has 86,400 seconds“, “Don‘t be afraid of wounds“, “Don‘t be made of glass, Be made of steel“, “Let‘s help ourselves“, “Strong love life“, “Speed is power“.

Interview

Is fashion your passion? To me, fashion means keeping true to who you are. But due to heavy commer-cialization and pressure to fit in, I think the word “fashion” has lost its meaning. Fashion should be about wearing the clothes that make you feel happy, because when you feel happy you become more productive and spread positive energy around you. I think as soon as something becomes a trend, it tends to lose its power to do this.

Do you have a signature style, and do you follow fashion trends? I love minimalism, and my designs reflect it. I am attracted to monochromatic colors and believe that timeless pieces offer ex-ceptional value. Although I stay informed about fashion trends, they feel superficial to me.

When did you fall in love with Bata shoes?

I’ve grown up with the Bata brand; I’ve been wearing Bata since I was a little girl. For casual and dressy affairs, Bata was the brand my family turned to. As I’ve got-ten older, I’ve fallen in love with the diver-sity of Bata’s collections and know I can count on Bata to have the perfect shoe for nearly any occasion.

As a fashion designer, we’re beg-ging you to tell us what’s hot!

I think personality is always hot; and clothes and accessories are the best way to express your personality. Too often we think of clothes as simple garments that cover our bodies. I want to encourage people to think of clothing in a new way: as an expression of themselves. And find-ing just the right pair of shoes is essential to creating your individual style.

Why did you start blogging, and how do you keep in-spired?

I’m creative to the core and al-though I have a passion for design, I also need a place where I can write about the industry and share my design projects. My inspira-tion comes from everywhere. life, nature, philosophy, psychology, and graphics get my creative juices flowing. honesty and intuition guide me. I also love browsing pinterest. I find a lot of inspiration there.

Do you have a favourite fashion designer or brand?

I love the simplicity of Jil sander, his dominant form amazes me every time. I also admire the work of Maison Martin Margiela, Acne studio, along with the young de-signer Mary katrantzou. her prints often inspire me.

We love shoes! What tips do you have for choosing the right pair?

II often see people wearing stun-ning clothing with a cheap or un-suited pair of shoes. I’d love your readers to remember that if you do not have the right shoes, even the most expensive dress in the world loses its value. The “right” shoe is one that enhances your outfit instead of detracting from it. lots of times I choose my shoes first, and then decide what outfit to wear- that’s how important shoes are! .

If we opened your closet, what kind of shoes would we find?

I’m crazy for boots and sandals that have interesting heels. you wouldn’t find many ordinary shoes in my closet. Again, shoes are an expression of oneself- so mine reflect my unique style. I encour-age your readers to break away from ordinary shoes and instead select shoes that they are genuinely attracted to and mirror their per-sonality.

IrmA IBrIc was born creative! Blend style and elegance, a hint of some-thing classic, a touch of something new, and then spice it up with daring spirit and you have this season’s fashion trend.A major focus this season embraces femi-nine elegance and style. This can be seen in the frequent use of patent and other chic finishes and colour schemes that reflect popular autumnal hues such as black, grey, and natural shades of brown Eternally feminime violet and striking petrol emerge as the season’s two domi-nant colours. Fans of the ever-popular army style will most certainly come into their own this season and the spring sea-son’s neo-punk trend continues- as does the western style adornedwith studs and other metal decorations. Rest assured, the current fashion trends don’t dictate just one style- everyone can feel comfortable with his or her own fash-ion statement. No matter what your style, you can count on Bata to ensure fashion goes hand in hand with perfect work-manship and tried and tested comfort. Suede ankle boot wedges and ankle boot high heels are at the core of the collection, and dynamic colour combinations abound. Selecting the Perfect Boot

1. Material matters.synthetic or cloth fabrics are fine for autumn, however for winter you are definitely better off going for leather which is more resistant.

2. size is important. If you normally wearsize 38, moving up to size 39. If you’re buying shoes with apointy toe, it’s especially a good idea to buy a slightly bigger size.

3. Consider your shape.Choose boots according to your figure. Tall slim women can get away with any type of boot. Women with fuller figures will find high and narrowly shaped boots most flattering. If you’re slightly shorter, go for boots with high heels which optically lengthen your figure.

A Bata bestseller every woman will appreciate… comfort guaranteed even in high heels! Thesuccess of Insolia shoes can be easily explained: they make your feet feel good! That’s be-cause Insolia shoes are designed to transfer weight from the front part of your foot to the heel, thus reducing excess strain on the front of your foot. On top of that, when you slip on a pair of Insolia shoes, your feet are placed in an anatomically more natural position than with traditional shoes. Less strain is placed on the knees, calves and feet- reducing tension and pain in the foot. Walking in high heel shoes with Insolia is an experience your feet deserve.

FLEXIBLEshoes featuring Flexible technology are ideal for wearing all day long. The secret behind the success of this shoe is the special insole that absorbs shock, and its anti-slip rubber soles.
