FOUR TECHNOLOGY PARKS. One of the most consolidated
networks in Europe, headquarters of excellence companies, Universities and Research and Technology Transfer Centres.
2 km from the airport, 15 from the report, 10 from Bilbao and 6 from the Central campus of the University of the Basque Country. Number of companies, 223, with 7,700 direct employees.
BIZKAIA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK

CONSORTIUM ESS – BILBAO: THE EUROPEAN SPALLATION NEUTRON SOURCE
The Consortium ESS Bilbao will be aimed to supply systems or subsystems designed, built and tested to deliver turnkey to the
project of the European Spallation Source to be constructed in Lund (Sweden).
Total investment of 80 million euros (financed 50-50% between MICINN and the Basque Government).
CREATION OF NEW LEADING INDUSTRIAL SECTORS: BIOBASQUE AND NANOBASQUE
BIOBASQUE Biosciences are growing strong in the Basque Country, with a new company created every 3 months since the launch of the
BioBasque 2010 strategy. BioBasque is home to more than 70 companies, the core being so-called biocompanies. These firms offer direct employment to around 1.780 people and represent a total turnover of over 305million €.
NANOBASQUE Aims to incorporate micro and nanotechnologies in order to increase the technological intensity of the Basque business fabric. Major investments in the scientific-technological offer materialized in two CICs, Nanogune and Microgune and a complete
network of scientific and technological infrastructures.

WAVE POWER: BISCAY MARINE ENERGY PLATFORM (BIMEP)
Infrastructure for the research and use of power generated by waves and off-shore wind power in the open sea. Located in
Armintza, Bizkaia. It will come into operation by the end of 2014.
Total investment: 20 million euros
ELECTRICAL VEHICLE
Agreement between the Basque Energy Board (EVE) and Repsol for the development of a basic network of EV charging points.
Creation of the company IBIL financed by both firms and development of a network of 270 recharge points in the Basque
Country.
Agreement between EVE and Mercedes Benz for the manufacture of electrical vans in Vitoria-Gasteiz. First E-VITO vans
delivered in 2011.
Put into operation the Electrical Mobility Center in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in order to bring this technology closer to both citizens and
companies.
MOBILITY WITH NATURAL GAS
Analysis of the use of compressed natural gas (GNC) in fleets of city buses, taxis,...
Assessment of the use of natural liquid gas (GNL) as a substitute fuel for diesel in transport vehicles used for long distance road
and sea transport.
INTELLIGENT ELECTRICITY NETWORKS
Protocol for collaboration between Iberdrola, EVE, BBK and Provincial Council of Bizkaia for the introduction of an intelligent
electricity distribution network in the town centres of Bilbao and Portugalete, with plans to extend the service to the rural zone
Lea-Artibai.
250,000 intelligent containers to be installed and 1,330 transformer centres to be automated.
60 million euros investment over the period 2012-2014.

IBERIAN GAS HUB
At present there is no organized gas market in the South West of Europe, despite the high number of existing agents and
transactions.
The Basque Country is promoting the creation of the Iberian Gas Hub, by means of a development company, with the
participation of the Basque Government though EVE, the technical management of the Enagas system and the financial
institution Kutxabank.
The goal is to promote market and finance services that facilitate natural gas transactions in the Iberian Gas Hub. This is the first
initiative of its kind in the State.
ALAVA: A TOP LEVEL LOGISTICS NODE IN SOUTH-WESTERN EUROPE
Around Vitoria there are 7 million square meters dedicated to logistics activities, with connections to the rest of the world by land, sea and air through the ports of Bilbao and Pasajes, Foronda airport and several high-speed connections by road.
VIAP: VITORIA INDUSTRIAL AIR PARK The expected investment amounts to 60.4 million euros in an area of 390,000 square metres. Following the agreement signed between the Basque Government, Vitoria City Hall and AENA, an industrial park with the
characteristics of a technology park linked to the aeronautic sector will be built.
VIT: VITORIA INTERMODAL TERMINAL This Intermodal station will channel all the traffic between continental Europe and the Iberian peninsula through the western
Pyrenees. A twin-gauge track infrastructure, Iberian and international, that will be 2.200 metres long x 220 m. wide, with 48 ha of surface
area. An expected total investment up to the year 2037 of 120 million euros. 62 million are planned for the first stage.
