WILL WE SEE A RUN FROM OUTSIDE THE TOP THREE?

THE FINALS MEN’S PREVIEW

W est Adelaide and Sturt will be hoping to repeat recent runs from an elimination

final to the grand final when they start their finals campaign on Saturday night.

The Bearcats and Sabres are the only sides in the past decade to have made the men’s decider from outside of the top-three.

West won three sudden-death finals in 2014 before falling to Woodville by two points in the grand final at Adelaide Arena, while Sturt made the 2015 grand final (where

they lost to Norwood) after finishing fifth in the regular season.

The Bearcats will be aiming to continue their recent good form in elimination finals, having won four of five over the past decade.

The Sabres have played in three cut-throat games in the opening round of the finals during the past 10 years, winning one and losing two.

Overall in the past 10 years both Sturt and West have played 19 finals.

Head-to-head in that time the Sabres have won three of five battles against the Bearcats

At Morphett Vale, the Southern Tigers can continue their recent success over Norwood and build on last season’s finals return.

The Tigers defeated the Flames in last season’s finals on their way to the premiership.

Norwood has played in more finals (26) than any other men’s side over the past decade.

THE SOUTHERN TIGERS START THEIR QUEST FOR BACK-TO-BACK TITLES AGAINST NORWOOD

MAVS BACK ON THE BIG STAGE AGAINST NORTH

THE FINALS WOMEN’S PREVIEW

T he Eastern Mavericks return to the finals stage for the first time since 2013 when

they host North Adelaide in a qualifying final.

Eastern will be featuring in just its third finals series since 2007 and its first qualifying final in that time.

The Mavericks’ two other finals campaigns finished in elimination final defeat, to Central Districts in 2012 and Forestville in 2013.

Both games were on the road, making Saturday night’s clash

against North the first home final for Eastern in at least a decade.

The Rockets have played more finals than any other side in the past 10 seasons, featuring in a total of 24 major round match-ups.

Five of them have been qualifying finals, with North winning three times.

Sturt is also returning to the finals after missing out the past two seasons.

The Sabres won their final six games of the season to confirm

their return to the major round and

edged this weekend’s opponent,

Norwood, by six points in the

penultimate round.

The Flames are aiming for their

third-straight title and fifth in six

seasons.

They will have to become the first

team since Forestville in 2011 to

win through to the women’s decider

from an elimination final.

EASTERN MAVERICKS NORTH ADELAIDE ROCKETS

PREVIEW WOMEN’S QUALIFYING FINAL

AT ADELAIDE HILLS | SATURDAY JULY 29 | TIP-OFF 6.30PM

E astern coach Nathon Jones cannot hide his pride in the way the Mavericks have

climbed the ladder to finish in the top three this season.

But ahead of a home qualifying final against North Adelaide he knows there is plenty of work to be done if Eastern is to be crowned Premier League champions.

“We’ve just aimed at consistent improvement,” Jones said.

“That’s been our motto all year that we want to improve at every training and game.”

After missing out on the minor premiership to Southern after losing to the Tigers in the final round a blockbuster clash with the Rockets looms for Eastern.

The sides split two contests during the minor round.

North won by 33 points in round four while the Mavericks prevailed by six points in the most recent meeting in the Hills.

“North has a lot of finals experience and regardless of the ladder I think we’ll go in as the underdogs,” Jones said.

“It’s going to come down to us having a good defensive game.

“They have a lot of firepower but what they were able to do to us the first time was change up their defence and we shot terribly.”

Jones has plenty of firepower at his disposal also.

Two-time WNBL Champion Alex

Wilson has helped take Eastern to new heights in 2017, averaging 26.2 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.

Rockets’ coach Brenton Johnston says his team is being careful not to lose focus of the other threats on the Mavericks’ roster.

“As a group we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Johnston said.

“We need to be aware Wilson is there but that we are not too focused on her.

“When you focus on her she is so clever she drags her other teammates in and they start to score.”

Johnston said his team is firing at the right time of season and with a full group to choose from after missing some players to holidays during the regular season.

“Some people had us rated as not making finals this season so finishing third we’re satisfied with that,” he said.

Jo Hill has starred for the Rockets, leading the team with 14.9 points per game.

While Opal Mader is averaging 16 points per game in her last five appearances, including a team-high 19 in North’s final round loss to West Adelaide.

Hill and Norrisha Victrum have both played key playmaking roles in the Rockets’ run to the top three.

NORWOOD FLAMES STURT SABRES

PREVIEW WOMEN’S ELIMINATION FINAL

AT THE ARC CAMPBELLTOWN | SATURDAY JULY 29 | TIP-OFF 6.30PM

N orwood will have to complete the tricky trek from fourth if it is to claim

its third-straight women’s Premier League crown.

The Flames will begin their title defence without a double chance and in a tough assignment against Sturt during the opening week of the finals.

Norwood captain Jess Good is not buying into the Flames being favourites against the Sabres but says their finals experience will be useful.

“A lot of the girls have had at least one season experience in finals, so they know what to expect,” Good said.

However, given Norwood’s strong

ladder positions in recent years, Good admitted many of the side had not faced a scenario where there was no second chance.

Having only met two weeks ago, where Sturt were six point winners in an away upset, Good said that the Flames need to be sharp early to avoid the Sabres taking control after raced out to 13-point quarter-time lead last time.

“We need to focus on our defensive stops and get the ball through hands early in offence,” she said.

“It comes from practice so we need to be switched on for our last week of training to then transfer it to the game.”

“With Sturt playing a very team-orientated style it is difficult to shut

down just one player, rather it’ll have to be a whole hearted defensive focus to get Norwood the win.”

“We need to respect each (Sturt) player, know the scout and adjust during the game.

Sturt, on the other hand, have not featured in the finals race since their 2014 championship win and will be eager to capitalise on their great recent form and make an impact at the pointy end of the season.

Sabres’ Coach Marcus Wong says his side makes little of their finals absence.

“It’s not something we’ve spoken about as a group, internally it doesn’t really worry us,” he said.

“We were pretty relaxed on Monday night (at training) and we’re treating it like any other week.”

Given their recent form and win over the Flames, Wong says the Sabres will be confident going into the clash.

“It will be a tough match, but we can certainly win if we play at our best.”

Stopping Chelsea Brook (30 points last round) and Good might prove the key for quelling Norwood’s offence.

“Goody is having a great season, she’s almost averaging a triple-double so we’ll have a plan to best limit her,” Wong said.

SOUTHERN TIGERS NORWOOD FLAMES

PREVIEW MEN’S QUALIFYING FINAL

AT MORPHETT VALE | SATURDAY JULY 29 | TIP-OFF 7.30PM

BY DAVID PENROSEt @David_Penrose

N orwood coach Kevin Brooks says his side is confident it can put an end to its recent

struggles against Southern when it faces the Tigers in a qualifying final.

The Flames have lost five of their past six meetings against Southern over the past two seasons, including the most recent by 26 points at Morphett Vale.

Brooks said Norwood had adjusted to playing without import Jerrell Sanders (knee) since the last meeting.

“At Morphett Vale that was the first time we didn’t have him (Sanders) and they jumped on us,” Brooks said.

“Everyone has stepped up now and we have a handful of guys who can

do some really good things ... we’re very balanced.”

The Flames started the season 3-5 but are 9-1 since.

Brooks said his side had improved its defensive game in the second half of the season.

“We’re pretty happy with making the finals and our second half of the season,” he said.

“With a new coach and a new system this season it took some time to adust but they (the players) did an outstanding job.”

Norwood’s only loss in the run home was to Southern.

“We didn’t shoot well (in that game) but defensively I thought we did a good job on them, we just didn’t

have the points on the board,” Brooks said.

“The first game (this season) we were very much in it but we put on the foul line too much down the stretch and they pulled away from us.

“They’ve got a whole lot of talent on that team so we’re going to have our work cut out for us.”

Southern coach Dean Nyberg said he was expecting a battle more like the round six fixture between the sides than the Tigers’ 26-point win later in the season.

“The first game was a real interesting chess battle,” he said.

“It was a bit back-and-forth and quite high-scoring.

“I think we can trouble them a little bit with our size which is a focus, but they’re a smart, savvy, group and they won’t beat themselves.

“We have to go out there and make sure they’re not getting their preferred options.”

Norwood has missed just one finals campaign the past decade, giving it a significant edge in major round experience over the Tigers.

“They are so experienced and have some veterans so you know come finals time they will put up a pretty good fight,” Nyberg said.

“If you allow them to hang around and get a sniff with a veteran group they will get a win.”

WEST ADELAIDE BEARCATS STURT SABRES

PREVIEW MEN’S ELIMINATION FINAL

AT PORT ADELAIDE | SATURDAY JULY 29 | TIP-OFF 8.00PM

W est Adelaide and Sturt will fight to keep their seasons alive in a sudden-death

final at Port Adelaide.

The fifth-seeded Sabres travel to West to face the fourth-ranked Bearcats, a side hell-bent on ending its 21-year men’s championship drought.

For both clubs, this is where it begins.

West and Sturt each failed to find winning form heading into the Premier League finals.

Despite a third quarter comeback, the Bearcats were soundly defeated by the first-seeded Rockets, while the Sabres were overrun in the second half by South Adelaide.

This, coupled with a 31-point belting handed to them by Norwood the week before, renders last year’s Grand Finalists a clear outsider in the championship battle, and as we dig deeper the statistics fail to improve.

The 1982 NBL Championship winners have a clear edge on travelling Sturt when it comes to this season’s matchups.

The absence of Issac White, who had a blinder in Port Adelaide earlier this season is also a huge loss, but finals is a different beast entirely where regular season results mean little.

In his maiden season, Corey Maclean has managed to create a Bearcats side with great balance

and chemistry, and the West Adelaide coach is confident his side has what it takes.

“If we play to our full potential and our workrate is high, we can compete with any team in the league,” he said.

“Our best is definitely good enough.

“It’s a one game battle ... you go into finals with a clean slate and anything can happen.”

The hosts of Saturday Night’s blockbuster have great strength and experience in their tall brigade, but also have firepower from the arc, with Patrick Thomas (38.46%) and Tristan Braithwaite (36.71%) ranked fourth & fifth in the league for three-point percentage.

Thomas (six assists per game) and Anthony Spadavecchia (four) are some of the league’s most elite passers, holding the side in great stead when in transition.

Sturt, the 2010 champions, have shown in recent seasons that they are no finals easy-beats, and that notion looks likely to prove correct again this season.

“We’re confident going in,” coach Paul Rigoni said.

“It’s a final, we just have to bring it this time of the year.”

And bring it they do.

The Sabres have reached five of the past eight grand finals.
