Introduction

• Today I want to tell you about popular team sport in Russia-BASKETBALL.

Creation• It was created on 21st Dec.1891 by James

Naismith, the teacher of anatomy in the Youth Christian Association of Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.

First basketball• First of all, basketball was as two baskets out of

peaches, which it was necessary to throw the ball to score a goal, but it wasn’t very convenient because the throwed ball player had to climb up the stairs to get the ball back.

• Then students made holes at the bottoms of the baskets to get ball quicker.

Basketball now• Now basketball is a team sport with two rings with

baskets and a ball, which you need to throw in these baskets to score a goal.

Rules• But there are lots of basic rules in basketball that

must be followed. You must dribble, and do not to kick, roll or just carry it in hands. If you have broken a rule, the ball is given to the opposite team by the referee.

Basketball in Russia• In our country, basketball is very popular, and all

major cities have got their own basketball teams. For example, Novosibirsk has “BC Novosibirsk”.
