n UCSB Records Back-to-Back 20-Win Seasons for First Time in 29 Years The Gauchos’ win at CSUN on Thursday gave them a 20-9 record. Coupled with their 23-9 record last season, they have won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1988-89 and 1989-90 campaigns. The 23 wins in 2017-18 equaled a school record and the 43 wins over the last two seasons equals the most over a two-season span in school history, previously, set by the 1987-88 and 1988-89 teams that went 22-8 and 21-9 respectively.

n Sow Named to Lou Henson Award Watch ListUCSB sophomore forward Amadou Sow has been named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List. The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player. In 2018-19, 6-foot-9 Sow had one of the finest freshman seasons in Gauchos’ history and was named Second Team All-Big West. He is one of just eight underclassmen on the list of 50 players and is joined by Lamine Diane of CSUN as the only two Big West Conference players on the list.

n Pasternack Included Among “Ten Coaches on the Rise”Jon Rothstein, a college basketball writer for Sports Illustrated and a college basketball commentator for CBS Sports and WFAN in New York, has included Joe Pasternack on his list of “Ten Coaches on the Rise.” Among the others on the list are Travis DeCuire of Montana, Justin Hutson of Fresno State and Craig Smith of Utah State.

n Heidegger Takes Aim at Targets on Points ListLast season, guard Max Heidegger struggled with a concussion that limited him to 21 games, but he was still able to become the 29th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau. Heidegger scored 19 points in UCSB’s win over Jackson State and will enter the game at UCLA with 1,078 points, the 26th most in school history. He needs 39 points to pass Nick Jones and move into 25th-place.

n UCSB Post Players Have Efficient OpenerThere was a lot for UCSB to be pleased about its season opening win over Jackson State, but one of the things that really had to put a smile on the faces of the coaching staff were the performances of the team’s two primary post players, Amadou Sow (26:16) and Robinson Idehen (13:44). Combined, the duo played exactly 40 minutes. Sow was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, made his only three-pointer, while finishing with 20 points, nine rebounds and one steal. Idehen was 3-for-3 from the floor, tied his career-high with eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Combined, they made all 10 of their field goal attempts, 3-of-4 free throws and their only three-pointer. They finished with 26 points, 17 rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal.

n A Simple Recipe for Victory: Defense and ReboundsThroughout its offseason and since the beginning of practice, the UCSB coaching staff has stressed many things, but two stand out: defense and rebounding. Putting an emphasis on defense and rebounding, without question, separates the Gauchos from probably no other programs in the country, but if one game is any indication, the players are getting the message. Santa Barbara limited Jackson State to 36.1% shooting overall and 30.0% from three-point territory. On the rebound side of the ledger, UCSB had a 41-23 edge over the Tigers. In fact, if you include NCAA Division 1 games only, the Gauchos outshot and outrebounded JSU by a larger margin than it did any opponent in any game last season. They had a 59.6% to 36.1% differential in field goals, an advantage of 23.5%, and their 41-23 rebounding edge, was a margin of +18. In 2018-19, their big-gest margins over D-1 opponents in field goal percentage and rebounds were 14.9% and +17 respectively.

n The OpponentsUCSB and UCLA have played 21 times with the Bruins holding a decisive 21-1 advantage. The last time the teams played was on Dec. 14, 2016. Santa Barbara’s only win in the series was a 61-60 decision on Dec. 17, 2003. The Gauchos and Rice have played three times in a series that began in 1972 with Santa Barbara holding a 3-0 advantage. The teams last played in Houston on Dec. 15, 2018 with UCSB posting a 99-89 victory in overtime. n The Gauchos in Season OpenersWith the win in their season-opener against Jackson State, the Gauchos have gone 54-26 in season opening games under eight different coaches dating back to the 1937-38 season. They have won 14 of their last 17 season openers with the only losses over that span coming to Nebraska-Omaha (2016), at Kansas (2014) and at LSU (2012). Joe Pasternack is now 3-0 in season-openers at UCSB with an 85-66 hom win over North Dakota State in 2017, a 76-66 win at Wyoming in 2018 and then the victory on Wednesday night.

n The Gauchos on the RoadUCSB went 7-6 in true road games during the 2018-19 season, including 5-3 in Big West games. The Gauchos also went 3-1 in neutral site games for an overall record of 10-7 in games away from the Thunderdome. The true road wins came at Wyoming, Rice, UC Davis, Long Beach State, Hawai’i, Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly. The neutral site victories came over Portland State and Idaho in Boise, and over Cal State Northridge at the Big West Tournament in Anaheim. During Joe Pasternack’s two seasons, UCSB has gone 16-12 in true road games and 21-14 in all games away from home.

n They’re Free, But Also PricelessThe Gauchos got off to a good start in several areas on Wednesday night and included on that list was free throws as they made 18-of-22, 81.8%. Last season, UCSB shot 80% or better four times, but just once over the season’s final 21 games. The teams best effort at the line came in a 99-89 overtime win at Rice when it made 23-of-24, 95.8%,the program’s best mark ever when attempting 20 or more and the fifth best percentage overall.

Joe Pasternack followed-up his amazing first season as head coach at UC Santa Bar-bara with an impressive second campaign.

In 2018-19, the Gauchos went 22-10 overall and 10-6 in the Big West Conference, good for second-place. They advanced to the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament for the second consecutive season.

Pasternack’s first season as the head basketball coach at UC Santa Barbara was nothing short of re-markable.

In his first campaign at the helm, Pasternack’s Gauchos tied a school record for wins with 23 and equaled the NCAA’s largest increase in regular season victories from one season to the next, going from six wins in 2016-17 to 23 in 2017-18, a leap of 17. In addition to their 23-9 overall record, they narrowly missed winning the Big West Confer-ence’s regular season title with an 11-5 league mark. UCSB also became just the third Big West school to go from single-digit wins one season to 20 or more the next. Finally, the program went 12-2 at home equaling the best Thunderdome record in school history and it won a school record 11-straight home games to open a season.

Overall, in his first two years at the helm of the UCSB program, Pasternack has recorded a 45-19 record for a winning percentage of .703, the best in school history.

Here are some additional program accomplishments in Pasternack’s first two seasons:

• Pasternack had easily the most successful first season in Santa Barbara history at 23-9. The previous best record by a first-year coach was 15-10 by Art Gallon in 1957-58.

• His two-year win total of 45 is not only the most by a coach in his first two years with the Gauchos, it is the most in back-to-back seasons period.

• This marks the first time the program has won 20 or more games in consecutive seasons since it posted three straight 20+ win campaigns from 1987-90.

• The 2018-19 Gauchos had five players average in double-figures for the first time in school history.

• In 2017-18, for just the second time in school history, and the first since 1970-71, UCSB placed two players – Max Heidegger and Leland King II – on the All-Big West First Team.

• Heidegger set school records for points by a sophomore (612) and three-point baskets in a single season (95).

• In 2018-19, Amadou Sow broke numerous UCSB freshman records, including points (391) and field goal percentage (56.4%). His 210 rebounds were the second most ever.

• In 2017-18, UCSB had winning streaks of seven in a row and eight in a row during the regular season, marking the first time ever that the program had two winning streak of seven games or more in the same season.

• In Pasternack’s first two years, his teams have had four winning streaks of five games or longer.

Pasternack was introduced as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at UCSB on April 4, 2017. He joined the Gauchos’ program after spending four years as the Associate Head Coach at the University of Arizona.

Pasternack joined Sean Miller’s Arizona staff for the 2011-12 season and was promoted to the Associate Head Coach position in June of 2013. In his six seasons on the Wildcat bench, the team recorded a 174-47 overall record, including 124-23 over the last four seasons, while advancing to five NCAA Tournaments, two Sweet 16s and a pair of Elite Eights.

Pasternack was a key part of Arizona recruiting efforts that resulted in six consecutive top-10 classes, including four top-five groups during that stretch. In 2013-14, he played an integral role in the development of Aaron Gordon from a top recruit to an All-America-caliber player who was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and was taken fourth overall by Orlando in the 2014 NBA Draft. Pasternack was also instrumental in the development of Stanley Johnson, the eighth overall selection in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons and the 2015 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

Prior to his six-year run at Arizona, the native of New Orleans spent four years as the head coach at the University of New Orleans from 2007-11. He led the Privateers to 19 wins in his first season and he was credited with the Sun Belt Conference’s top recruiting class. In his final season at UNO, Pasternack guided the program to 16 wins despite losing the majority of his roster to transfer in the wake of the school’s decision to transition out of NCAA Division 1 due to financial hardships in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Before his tenure at UNO, Pasternack was on the staff at Cal from 2000-07 where he oversaw the Bears’ scouting and game preparation efforts, worked with the team’s guards on a daily basis and was involved in coordinating recruiting efforts that landed several top-25 classes.

Pasternack got his start in college basketball as a four-year manager under Bob Knight at Indiana University, where he broke down film and assisted in scouting opponents. He graduated from IU in 1999 with a degree in marketing. He played four years of varsity basketball at Metairie Park Country Day School in New Orleans. He and his wife, Lindsay, have a son, Joe IV, and a daughter, Lilly.
