Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column December 1/2 Dear Parish Family, One of the things I really love about teaching is that classes have a beginning, a middle,

and an end. After that, it all begins anew. If you and the students have had a wonderful year, then it’s time to celebrate and look to the new beginning. If the year has been

challenging, well, you bring it to a close and look forward to another chance. Either way, having a new beginning is always an opportunity for growth.

Advent, for the church, is a new beginning. The year of celebrations and feasts

begins again with the wonderful time of waiting for the great feast of Christmas. This year, Catholics throughout the world are celebrating a year of faith both to honor the anniversary

of the Second Vatican Council and to encourage each other to renew our faith and our belonging to this community. We are invited, as our bishop has so often encouraged us, to

belong more deeply. Here at Sacred Hearts I would like to see us take advantage of this beginning. There are many ways to do this and I would like to propose two for our parish.

First, this weekend you will find cards in our pews which ask you to promise to do something to deepen your own life of faith and also to pray for one other person. You might

promise to attend Mass more faithfully or prayerfully, take time for learning about your faith, set aside a time for prayer or reading, or join a ministry in our parish. It’s simply an

opportunity to make a new beginning. Second, I would like our parish to conduct a census of members this year. This will

give me and all who minister here a better knowledge of our community. We can update information so we can keep in touch. We can update our information to take advantage of

ways to communicate (like Email) that did not exist years ago. And we can learn about the

spiritual needs and problems of our members. I will be forming a committee soon to help with the details of this project.

I am glad that we have a good and practical project for this Advent season. It is a busy and stressful time for many and it is good to have something to keep our focus on the

purpose of this season. Most of all remember this simple truth: God always offers a new beginning.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Mike Vetrano

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS Parishioners and community members are invited to begin the Advent season with the OLH community at the annual Family Advent Service and tree Lighting on Wednesday evening, December 5 beginning at 7PM. Refreshments will follow this celebration of prayer and music. The annual Bucks for Books raffle to benefit the school programs at OLH is on now, with the drawing for the $15000 first prize scheduled for December 17. Tickets can be obtained at the school or by calling 283-9140. This is one of the year’s largest fund raisers that helps to supplement the operating budget for the school. The Christmas musical, “everywhere….JOY!” will be presented at OLH on Sunday, December 16 at 2PM and again on Monday, December 17 at 7PM at the school. This production features three hundred students in an original script with singing, dancing and the traditional Nativity. There is no admission charged for this event. The final steps toward completion of the gymnasium section of the new Wellness center are expected to be completed this week, with anticipated opening of the gym immediately after Christmas. Additional funding is still being sought to complete the classroom section of the new facility. Please call the school to arrange a tour and to see how you can become involved. We invite parishioners and friends to learn more about Our Lady of the Hamptons by visiting the website www.olh.org.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

HELP NEEDED: We are still in need of 2 teachers because of the large classes—one for 6th grade and one for 4th grade—both begin at

3:45 PM on Wednesday. Please contact Sr. Assunta if you can help.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.shjmbasilica.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. For more information please call the Religious Education office at 631-283-0508.

Keeping Our History As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite everyone

to take a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a history of

our parish through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even video.

If you have and memorable images or reminders from our history please share them

with us. You may dedicate them to our archive or simply have us copy and return the

item to you. Who knows! Maybe you have a old movie clip that will remind us all of

part of SHJM history. For information contact Fr. Mike or Gina Arresta at the rectory.

The Knights of Columbus would like to thank Father Mike for allowing us to sell our Christmas cards at Mass on Sunday and to thank all of the parishioners who purchased them. Keeping Christ in Christmas is the one of the goals of the Knights of Columbus. Your purchases help us not only with this but also benefit our parish through our donation.
